NIGERIA: Two ”Yoruba’s” arraigned over possession of human head

Read Time:1 Minute, 55 Second

A 49-year-old man, Samson Adeneye, and a woman, Oyerinde Olawunmi, 48, have been arraigned before the Surulere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly being in possession of human head.

The two accused were said to be former members of St. Peter Cherubim and Seraphim band at Moses Adebisi Street, Ketu.

The head was said to have been recovered from the ceiling of the church and traced to the duo, who had allegedly been sending threat text messages to some pastors of the church.

The police said there were fingerprints evidence against the accused.

The charge sheet, read in part, “That you, Samson Jolu Adeneye, ‘m’, Oyerinde Olawunmi, ‘f’and others now at large on the 19th day of January, 2013, at about 1530hrs at St Peter Cherubim and Seraphim band at No. 8 Moses Adebisi Street, Alapere Street, Alapere Ketu, Lagos within the Lagos Magisterial district did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit: unlawful possession of human skull and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 409 criminal laws of Lagos State 2011”

However, only Adeneye was in court on Friday, as the magistrate, Mrs. A.O Adedayo, obliged that the second accused be arraigned on Monday.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. A.A Animashaun, moved the motion that the defendant be remanded in prison custody pending the advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The allegation and application were read to the defendant, but his plea was not taken.

The defence counsel, A.D Abass, however objected to the application, insisting that Adeneye was not found with human head as the charge stated.

Abass said, “My, Lord, the prosecution is out to mislead this honourable court as no human head was found with the accused.”

Adedayo, however, said, “If you have any evidence, you should submit it before this court. And I am yet to see that.”

The magistrate said she would give the defence counsel time to properly file his application.

The accused was remanded, pending when the matter would be reopened on July 17.

PS: Later the Ofe Mmanus will accuse the Igbos for rituals. What then do we call this? This people are ready to spoil our name but hide theirs.

Extradition: PDP chieftain urges court to quash judgment

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 27 Second

A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain in Ogun State, Prince Buruji Kashamu, has urged the Court of Appeal, Lagos, to set aside its judgment delivered on July 2 regarding the purported attempt to extradite him to the United States by the Federal Government.

He said the judgment was “delivered without jurisdiction” because the panel’s integrity was questioned.

Kashamu is contending that while the appeal was pending, a petition was written accusing the panel of justices of alleged compromise in another appeal. He (Kashamu) was accused of being behind the petition.

Following the development, Kashamu said he wrote a separate petition urging the court to constitute an independent panel to hear pending appeals involving him.

He averred in an affidavit in support of the appeal, that “In spite of the aforestated petition of the respondent/applicant alleging likelihood of bias against the Lagos Division of this court, and without awaiting the outcome of the said petition written to the President of the Court of Appeal, a hearing notice was sent out fixing hearing for April 18.

“The judgment was not read in open court and typed copies thereof were not available to parties until July 8, 2013. A reasonable onlooker would come to the conclusion that there were other considerations than the end of justice involved in the manner the case was determined and the result.

“The panel of the Court of Appeal, Lagos constituted by its presiding justice lacked jurisdiction in any event to determine the appeal in the circumstances of the unresolved allegation of bias made against it by the respondent/applicant in his petition.

“The judgment of this court delivered on July 2, 2013 is, therefore, a nullity having been delivered without jurisdiction.”

This court has the power to set aside any of its orders or judgment which is a nullity.

“I verily believe that it is in the interest of justice to grant the reliefs sought in this application,” Kashamu averred.

The Attorney-General of the Federation had appealed a judgment delivered by a former judge of the Federal High Court, Lagos, Justice Okechukwu Okeke, who had restrained the government from entertaining or making any order whatsoever in respect of any request by the United States Government for the surrender of the applicant (Kashamu) in respect of alleged importation of prohibited narcotic into the USA between 1993 and 1995.

The appellant raised three is issues for determination: whether the suit disclosed a reasonable cause of action, whether the suit should have been commenced by way of an originating summons, and whether there was merit in the suit to warrant the grant of Kashamu’s prayers by Justice Okeke.

In the judgment delivered by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, the Appeal Court resolved the issues in favour of the appellant.

Two other Justices, Chinwe Iyizoba and Joseph Ikyegh also found merit in the appeal and concurred.

Obama won’t get involved in federal charges against Zimmerman

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 39 Second

(Codewit) – President Barack Obama, who on Sunday called the killing of Trayvon Martin a tragedy, will not involve himself personally in deciding whether to bring federal civil rights charges against Martin's killer George Zimmerman.

"That is not something the president involves himself in," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters Monday when asked about potential federal charges against Zimmerman, who was found not guilty of murdering Martin by a jury on Saturday.

"He has no opinion to express about the disposition about how the Justice Department will look at this," Carney continued.

Civil rights groups, including the NAACP, have called on Attorney General Eric Holder to pursue federal charges against Zimmerman. Petitions sponsored by the NAACP had already garnered almost 800,000 signatures as of Monday afternoon, while separate petitions on the White House's own website had gained nearly 15,000 supporters.

Speaking at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority in Washington Monday, Holder said the Justice Department is investigating possible federal charges in Martin's killing, adding in prepared comments it will "continue to act in a manner that is consistent with the facts and the law." Holder has previously cited a tough standard for bringing federal charges against Zimmerman.

"Independent of the legal determination that will be made, I believe that this tragedy provides yet another opportunity for our nation to speak honestly about the complicated and emotionally-charged issues that this case has raised," Holder said. "We must not – as we have too often in the past – let this opportunity pass."

Carney, responding to a question from CNN chief White House correspondent Jessica Yellin about increased pressure on Obama's administration to act quickly on bringing federal charges, asserted that established procedures would continue to be followed, despite the swelling outrage.

"Cases are brought on their merits, and the merits are evaluated by professionals at the Department of Justice, and the president expects as in every case that the process will be handled at the Department of Justice and not here," Carney said.

On Sunday, less than 24 hours after the verdict came down, Obama released a statement urging Americans to respect calls for calm in the aftermath of the jury's decision.

The president, in the written statement, acknowledged an emotionally charged climate but concluded that "we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken."

Obama's first comments on the Zimmerman trial came in March 2012, when the president said the fatal shooting of an unarmed African-American teen required national "soul searching."

The president also personalized the shooting in those remarks. He told reporters he thought about his own children when he thought about Martin.

"I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this and that everybody pulls together – federal, state and local – to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened," Obama said at that time.

CNN's Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

Race Reversal: A Hypothetical Scenario Of What Would Happen If Trayvon Martin Were White And George Zimmerman Were Black

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 59 Second

Race Reversal: A Hypothetical Scenario Of What Would Happen If Trayvon Martin Were White And George Zimmerman Were Black, And Why Race Has Everything To Do With The Case

If you don’t understand how deeply and viciously racist has been the official and right-wing reaction to the murder of Trayvon Martin, all you have to do is consider what would have been the official and right-wing reaction had the races of Martin and his killer been reversed.

Imagine a lanky white teenager was walking in a strange neighborhood at night. He’s a good kid—according to one of his teachers "an A and B student who majored in cheerfulness"—although he’s not above making the foolish teenaged mistake of getting caught with an empty baggie with marijuana residue inside it. But he has no criminal record. The worst anyone can say about him is that he smokes some pot, which puts him in the company of nearly half of all American high school students, something more than half of all American adults would legalize. But he’s a good student and has no criminal record. In other words, he’s a pretty typical teenager. A good kid.

Then one night this typical teenager is walking alone in a strange neighborhood, munching on some junk food and talking on his cell phone. And remember that we’re reversing the races here, so now he’s a white kid walking alone in a strange neighborhood, and it’s a black man who steps out of an SUV and starts following him. A black man who outweighs the teen by nearly a hundred pounds. A black man who steps out of an SUV, pulls up a hoodie, and starts following the teen. The kid tells his friend on the cell phone that someone is following him. He tells her because he doesn’t understand why someone is following him. He’s nervous. He’s just walking along, munching on junk food, and someone has started following him.

Finally, he decides to confront the guy. Even though he is nervous, he probably can’t imagine that simply walking in a strange neighborhood would lead to someone shooting him dead. He’s standing up for himself, but the thought of violence, the thought of gunfire, doesn’t even enter his head. But when he confronts the big guy who had been following him, and asks why he has been following him, the big guy pulls a gun. It happens so suddenly, the teen probably barely has time to realize that something serious is now happening. This was just an innocent evening stroll, a big guy had started following him for no reason, and now his life is being threatened. This was just an innocent evening stroll, and now he’s looking at a gun. Pointed at him. By a big guy who had been following him for no reason. A big guy who now shoots him dead.

Three witnesses later report having heard the boy’s desperate cry for help. The police report (pdf) says he was found face down, with his hands under him. He was carrying no weapon. He was carrying no drugs. He was carrying the type of junk food typical teenagers carry. In our reversal of races scenario, the story then is that a lanky white teen was walking in a strange neighborhood, snacking on junk food, talking to a friend on his cell phone, when a large black man stepped out of an SUV, started following him, frightened him, and shot him dead. Imagine the reaction.

Now suppose we find out that the teen’s killer had a history of race-based paranoia. Suppose we find out that the teen’s killer’s neighbors had complained of his aggressive behavior. Suppose we find out that the teen’s killer had once been arrested for “resisting arrest with violence and battery on an officer." Suppose we find out that the teen’s killer that night had ignored a police dispatcher who had told him to stop following the teen. And suppose that after all that, the much larger black man who had stepped out of an SUV, pulled up a hoodie, and started following the white teen had ended up shooting the white teen dead. What would have been the official response? What would have been the right-wing reaction?

Would a police officer have tried to coach a witness to change her story? Would the local state attorney and police chief have overruled even the lead homicide investigator, who recommended that the killer be charged with manslaughter? Would the police have neglected even to give the killer a routine drug and alcohol test? Would the police have neglected to contact whomever the kid was talking to on the phone just moments before he was shot, ignored the witnesses who contradicted the killer’s story, and later reported that the killer had been bloodied in a confrontation with the dead teen, even though the real time reports suggested no such thing, and even though the police surveillance video shows the killer had no discernible wounds or discomfort, and even though the funeral director who prepared the dead teen’s body for burial says there was no evidence he had been in a fight?

If Trayvon Martin had been white and George Zimmerman black, this would not have become a national story. If they had reported it at all, the right-wing media would have praised Martin for trying to stand his ground before a dangerous violent thug. It defies credulity to think they would be dismissing the killer’s behavior, making despicable excuses such as blaming the kid’s clothing, or if— unthinkable in this reversing-the-races scenario—there had been no criminal charges filed against the killer, dismissing the story altogether. The questions here don’t even need answers. The questions answer themselves.

Had Trayvon Martin been white and George Zimmerman black, Zimmerman would be headed for death row. Right-wing media would be hailing Martin as a hero. A martyr who had stood his ground against a dangerous predator. They would be saying that it’s too bad Martin hadn’t somehow fought back against Zimmerman, and that if he had somehow succeeded in fighting a man so much larger than him, it would have been justifiable if he had left Zimmerman dead.

There is no polite way to explain what has happened. There is no polite way to explain the reflexive defensive rationalizations by the right-wing media and their right-wing fans. This was a racist killing with a racist cover-up and the right wing’s reaction has been virulently and viciously racist. To understand the depth of the right wing’s racist depravity, all it takes is to consider the very different reaction to this horror had the races of the victim and his killer been reversed.

Didier Drogba has to escort hugging pitch invader back to sideline (video)

Read Time:50 Second

"Don’t let go! Don’t you ever let go!"

There are times when supporters take their love for a club or player a just little bit too far. Case in point: this heavily tattooed Chelsea fan — one of which is an image of Didier Drogba — who invaded the pitch during Galatasaray’s 3-0 victory against tiny Shrewsbury this weekend.

The fan “attacked" Drogba with a big bear hug and some kisses on the cheek, clearly with no intention of letting go of his favorite player. After a few seconds, Drogba tried to detach himself, but the man had other ideas — mainly, continuing to sweet-talk and cuddle up to his idol. We can only imagine what the fan was babbling in Drogba’s ear as the former Chelsea player actually had to escort him to the sideline himself.

Now that’s what we call a Stage-5 clinger!

Akon suggests that blacks move to Africa following George Zimmerman acquittal

Akon says we should move back to Africa

While Lupe Fiasco was busy sounding off on black America and shaming us for not “valuing ourselves,” a popular African artist was offering a different perspective. Akon took to Instagram immediately after the “not guilty” verdict was read in the George Zimmerman trial and suggested that blacks move back to Africa. According to the Konvict Muzik head, who is of Senegalese descent, we would receive much better treatment on the African continent.

“Every African American in the United States need to move their money, family, knowledge back to Africa were u will be treated like the royalty you are,” Akon captioned the below photo. “You don’t deserve this treatment. This is not your country!!”

NIGERIA: $300 dollars to beat Eagles, Oduduru, COSAFA, probes and other stories

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 25 Second

The headline carried by Complete Sports newspaper yesterday was very appealing. Cash rain for Malawi to beat Eagles.

The story said the Malawi Flames welfare package will be improved by “hundred percent “ before their all important 2014 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria in September.

The story quoted Suzgo Nyirenda the General Secretary of the Football Association of Malawi ( FAM ) as saying further that a proposal has been sent to the National Sports Council to up the winning bonus from K 30,000 to K100,000 while the daily camp allowance will be moved from $50 dollars a day to $75 dollars a day.

From investigation, Malawi Kwasha 330, equals one dollar, so by simple arithmetic, efforts are on to pay the Malawians $300 dollars (Yes three hundred dollars) as winning bonus for them to beat the Super Eagles! Don’t laugh. I wonder whether the Eagles are reading this.

Let us move from there to Zambia, host of the ongoing Council of South African Football Associations (COSAFA) Senior Challenge competition. As you are reading this, I am not sure Coach Keshi has left for Zambia, but that is where he should be.

COSAFA embraces Zambia, South Africa, Angola, Malawi, Namibia, Lesotho etc. In Zambia, Coach Keshi with or any of his assistants will not only have the opportunity of watching Malawi at close quarters but will also benefit a sneak preview of South Africa and Zambia, two countries we are likely to face in the decisive round of the World Cup if they make it out of their groups.

Before we get back to Football, let us punctuate the stories with that of a young man called Divine Ejowokoghene Oduduru. “ Africa’s fastest youth” I repeat that one of the best things to happen to our sports was the African Junior Athletics Championship hosted by AFN in Delta State and won by Nigeria, dusting all the Kenyans, Ethiopians and South Africans of the of world track and field. I gave the Federation Kudos for it and prayed others to emulate same.

After that championship,   I got to read a lot of rave reviews about the champions of that event. A particular coach could have taken a full page advert in a newspaper to gloat over his discovery of Oduduru, who he swore was Usain Bolt personified.

Off we went to the IAAF World Youth Championship in Donetsk and stories filtered out that did no credit to my great expectations of a medals haul. What of the “great” Oduduru ? That he failed to even qualify for the 100m final but was ready   to make amends in the 200m by blowing the opposition to smithereens.

Sunday afternoon, I had the privilege of watching Oduduru in the 200m final. What a disappointment, coming in 6th with a time of 21.37 seconds in the race won by Jamaica’s Michael Ohara in 20.63 seconds. In the words of my wife, “ Why is he so thick and stiff?” Was Warri a fluke? How come other Africa countries we dusted were winning medals with ease? (Including Nigerian born Ketira Orji of the US who leapt 6.39 in the Long Jump girls). In the Boys medley relay final we blundered to 7th position.

Felt so bad on Sunday listening to the Kenyan and Ethiopian anthems again and again, watching their athletes mounting the victory rostrum so often (In the 3000m steeplechase girls, it was all African affair) Kenya placed second on the overall medals tables with eleven medals including four gold. Ethiopia had eight medals, South Africa two, while Egypt and Morocco also appeared on the medals table. No Nigeria.

Pray, do we need a probe to find out what happened in Warri and   Donetsk?

Talking about probes, after reading Adokiye, Odegbami, Christian Okpara, Pius Ayinor……..I have nothing to add concerning the scandalous 145-0 scoreline that has made us the laughing stock of world football. I have also called on the NFF to probe the strange ouster of Rangers from the CAF Confederation Cup.

Tomorrow, a panel will sit to probe allegations of sell out in the National League, while a panel set up by the NSC to look at the Bonus issue and the Super Eagles embarrassing posture in Namibia is to conclude its sitting by next week.

The NFF reacted swiftly by stepping into the scandalous Nationwide row, but Christian Okpara of the Guardian says “ …..But followers of Nigerian football believe the NFF action could be the prelude to sweeping the matter under the carpet. Their argument is hinged on the Federation’s treatment of previous cases of match fixing including the Lobi Stars versus Sunshine Stars case of last season “ Weighty, very weighty. The NFF must therefore act with dispatch. The current case is without mincing words a national disgrace and we must get to the bottom of it and fast too. NFF is the sole football controlling body in the land. They are to conduct the preliminary investigation and decide to transfer same to either the police or the EFCC as the case may be.   Any thing to the contrary will be viewed differently. Ask FIFA.

Martin Luther King Jr. Hoodie Image Honoring Trayvon Martin Takes Internet By Storm (PHOTO)

Read Time:1 Minute, 10 Second

As the country reacts to the George Zimmerman trial verdict, those unhappy with the jury's decision have displayed an overwhelming response. While some have taken to the streets, others have taken to social media to express their feelings and show support for Trayvon Martin's family.

One image has taken the Internet by storm, capturing the link between the case, the Civil Rights Movement and the fight for racial equality in the United States, showing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wearing a hoodie.

Former Obama advisor Van Jones tweeted the image, sparking hundreds of retweets from users including Roland Martin.

The image appears to be the work of artist Nikkolas Smith.

The hoodie 17-year-old Martin was wearing the night he was killed became a symbol of the movement to see justice done early on in the case, with celebrities, pastors, politicians and even sports teams tweeting and Instagramming powerful images of themselves donning hooded sweatshirts.

The hoodie remained an enduring symbol of support for Trayvon throughout the trial and in the wake of the verdict. On the Sunday morning after Zimmerman's acquittal, black pastors honored the teen with "Hoodie Sunday," wearing hooded sweatshirts and spreading an uplifting message to their congregants.

Zimmerman, 29, was charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting the teen in February 2012. He was found not guilty on Saturday evening.

Italian senator says black minister Cécile Kyenge has ‘features of orangutan’

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 19 Second

Roberto Calderoli is condemned after speech in which he also said Cécile Kyenge should work as minister 'in her country'

The Italian prime minister, Enrico Letta, has condemned as unacceptable comments made by a senior rightwing senator in which he suggested the country's first black government minister had "the features of an orangutan".

Cécile Kyenge, an eye surgeon who was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo but has Italian citizenship, has faced repeated racial slurs and threats since being appointed minister for integration by Letta in April.

She was once again on the receiving end of grossly offensive comments on Saturday when Roberto Calderoli, a former minister under Silvio Berlusconi and senate vice-president of the Northern League, told a rally in the northern town of Treviglio that Kyenge would be better off working as a minister "in her country".

According to the Corriere della Sera, which reported the event, he added: "I love animals – bears and wolves, as is known – but when I see the pictures of Kyenge I cannot but think of the features of an orangutan, even if I'm not saying she is one."

The remark provoked horror from the rest of the Italian political class, especially in Kyenge's centre-left Democratic party. In a statement, Letta said the remarks were unacceptable. "Full solidarity and support to Cécile," he added.

Asked about the comments, Kyenge said it was not up to her to call on Calderoli to resign, but hoped all politicians would "reflect on their use of communication". "I do not take Calderoli's words as a personal insult but they sadden me because of the image they give of Italy," she told the Ansa news agency.

Ever since she was made minister in Letta's fractious grand coalition government, Kyenge, 48, has been the target of much criticism from the League. Some of it has been directed at her policies, particularly her desire to change a harsh citizenship law to make it easier for Italian-born children of foreigners to gain full nationality before they are 18.

But some of it has been very personal and vitriolic. Mario Borghezio, a member of the European parliament for the League, said in April that Kyenge wanted to "impose her tribal traditions from the Congo" and branded Letta's coalition a "bongo bongo" government. "She seems like a great housekeeper but not a government minister."

In June a local councillor for the League was ejected from the party after she posted a message on Facebook suggesting Kyenge should be raped. Referring to an alleged attempted rape in Genoa, Dolores Valandro wrote: "Why does no one rape her, so she can understand what the victim of this atrocious crime felt?"

Asked on Sunday to explain the latest slur, Calderoli insisted he had been joking. "I was speaking at a rally and I made a joke, an unfortunate one perhaps," he told Ansa. "I did not want to cause offence and if Minister Kyenge has been offended I apologise but my joke came in the context of a much broader political speech that criticised the minister and her politics."

This is not the first time that the 57-year-old has caused controversy. In 2006 he quit the government after going on television in a T-shirt emblazoned with cartoons of the prophet Muhammad – a move credited with inspiring deadly riots outside the Italian consulate in Libya.

Later that year, after Italy's football team beat France in the World Cup, he said the opposing side had been made up of "niggers, Muslims and communists". In 2007, he called for a "Pig Day" protest against the construction of a mosque in Bologna.
