Singer Eddie Kenzo of the "Sitya loss" fame has been involved in a physical scuffle climaxed by serious exchange of fists with a journalist attached to Dembe FM-Isaac Katende alias Kasuku Kuku Wazabanga.
It all started when Kasuku made some allegations that were not taken in good faith by the singer who yanked him to his feet and sent him a couple of jabs before he fumed out of the venue.

This all happened at a press conference that was organised by Kenzo at centenary park (Laftaz comedy lounge) on Thursday morning.
Eddie Kenzo who had called the press to announce preparations for his Sitya Loss Nice and Lovely concert that is slated for 19th September at Kati Kati grounds, started by scolding the media and journalists for writing negative news about artistes hence suffocating their chances to shine on the international stage.
“If you want us to represent you worldwide, why don’t you stop the negativity?” Kenzo said, adding:” The press people have always written about me not knowing English but have moved to over 20 countries overseas representing Uganda, where are the artistes who know English? They have also reported about me being gay which is not true.”

“I never went to school but have learnt English from the people that I associate with, you should at least be thankful that I can express myself in English." Kenzo scoffed.
Events would have gone as planned had Dembe Fm presenter desisted from taking the floor to hurl a number of observations as well as questions.
“I will say this on behalf of my fellow journalists; you musicians will not criticize our work. For the past one year, Ugandan media has been writing good stuff about you (Kenzo) but you can’t accept. When I go to the club and find Dr Jose Chameleon drunk and helplessly down on the floor, why would I go back and write that I found chameleon standing.
Kasuku went ahead and said that: "The press conference was announced to start at 10:30, when we reached here, the place was empty; Kenzo came at midday and still sat aside. He then expects us to write what we didn’t observe?"

Kasuku then swtiched Eddy Kenzo's "anger lights" on by stating that in 2011 when he was still working for Star TV on the Kasuku live show, Eddie Kenzo paid him (Kasuku) not to play songs of another artist- Big Eye.
The statement by Kasuku was not taken in good faith by the singer who yanked him to his feet and pummelled him before he fumed out of the venue.
His manager only identified as cox came back and addressed the journalists saying Kenzo was insulted by being called gay to the extent that he lost his cool. “I on behalf of Eddy Kenzo apologise to the public on behalf of him.” Cox said.

This is not the first time that Kasuku is being beaten by artistes, or even their relatives, it specifically comes after Jose Chameleon's wife Daniella Mayanja sneaked in his office and slapped him across the face in December 2012 for allegedly spreading false and malicious rumours about her husband's pecuniary matters.

A lewd statue of Satan that seemingly popped up overnight in East Vancouver in Canada has been taken down by city officials after raising eyebrows — among other things.
The 9-foot-tall statue was a representation of the devil, complete with red skin, a pointed tail and horns atop his head. The statue also holds one hand up in a devil-horn salute familiar to heavy metal fans the world over.
But what has aroused controversy is the statue's prominent, erect phallus, CTV News reports.
The statue stood about eight to nine feet tall on a pedestal near the intersection of 4th Avenue and Clark Drive for several hours Tuesday.
It was removed by city crews at around 3:15 p.m.
The statue also appeared to sport a full erection, a detail that likely raised hell with some of the commuters who use the station.
The satanic statue was erected on Tuesday on a pedestal that previously was home to a bronzed — and clothed — Christopher Columbus commemorative statue installed in 1986, according to Straight.com. The statue was moved to the Italian Garden in Hastings Park 10 years ago.
No one has claimed responsibility for the naked Satan, according to CTV News. But the bulging Beelzebub was quickly removed because city officials weren't exactly nuts about it.
“The statue was not a piece of city commissioned artwork and consequently it has been removed,” Sara Couper, a City of Vancouver spokeswoman, told GlobalNews.ca.
City officials haven't said what they plan to do, but a man named Mike Granger has started a petition on Change.org asking it be given to him for inclusion in an "Odditorium" he runs, according to the Winnipeg Sun.
One of the lines in the petition warns the city: “By removing the statue of Penis Satan, you are taking from us our freedom of expression, restricting our sexuality, and stigmatizing our religious beliefs. Please return him immediately."

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Believers' Love World Inc. (Christ Embassy Church) has described as “stupid” media publications on his alleged marital crises.
There were reports that after months of a cover up, the matrimonial crisis of charismatic Pastor Chris and his wife Rev. Anita had become public. Reports suggested, Rev. Anita had served Pastor Chris with divorce papers after initiating divorce proceedings in a London court.
Pastor Chris did not deny the divorce rumours but threatened to take legal action against some journalists for publishing stories about the divorce.
The pastor, who spoke through his lawyer, Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), called the accusations of adultery as "false and malicious."
The founder of the Christ Embassy Church speaking publicly for the first time on the alleged divorce, chastised media houses for “writing some real stupid things, frivolous charges,” about him.
"I understand that some media houses particularly in Nigeria and maybe in South Africa, I don't know but there're some of them who've been writing some real stupid things, frivolous charges, that's crazy.”
According to him, “You have to understand something about a Man of God. A man of God is not just someone who worships God or who preaches God. A man of God is handpicked by God, set on course by God. If you study the scriptures you will not find one Man of God going against God, sinning against God. No Man of God does something against the Lord… A Man of God is set on course, there is a type of life that he's been given, alright?
“But a Man of God setting himself in defiance against the word and living like they are writing those stupid things about me that I did this and I did that, you don't know who a Man of God is. I don't go in that direction. That seems crazy,” he lamented.
Pastor Chris said even "Jesus Christ was accused by many, with lots of frivolous charges. There would always be those who would like for it to be true, but you know, in spite of the accusations against Jesus, it didn't change who he was…”
“There are preachers and there are Men of God. I'm not a preacher, I'm a Man of God. Understand the difference and I go in the way I'm asked to go, it may cause some troubles with individuals, but that's not because I've done something wrong,” he said rather vaguely.
He urged his followers to pray for his 'wife', Rev. Anita and explained that if a woman is married to a Man of God it does not make her a Woman of God.
“And when it comes to Rev. Anita, what I would say to you is, pray for her… If you're married to a Man of God it doesn't make you automatically mature. You can make mistakes… but you know, people expect the wife of a Minister to definitely be at the level of the Minister.
“If a Man of God is married, it doesn't automatically mean that the wife of the Man of God is therefore a Woman of God! That's not the way it is in the Bible. That's why you don't really find the wives of Men of God mentioned in the bible. How many of them? Who was Peter's wife? Did you ever know her name? You never found out. Who was John's wife? Did you ever read the name? What about all the other apostles? How many of their names are written in the bible? You never find their names, why? Ask God when you find Him,” he rambled on.
Pastor Chris counseled that “Christians should not have a divorce. It shouldn't be but that doesn't mean a Christian may not take the step. They may do it, but that doesn't make it right. And we shouldn't take one another to court, but when it happens, not because we want to go there, someone is taking us there. That's a problem.”
“But be wise and stay focused in the Word of God, and don't let those who want to feast on things like this including Christians. The Christians who like things like this, they want to make something big out it and say yeah we said it. You said what? You should only say those things that are from God, and become honorable in your speech. And judge nothing before the time. Be wise, Glory to God,” the Man of God concluded.

A police source at the Homicide unit of the Criminal Investigation Department, Niger State Police Command headquarters, Minna, disclosed that Fatima, who happens to be the first suspect, gave the boy to the second suspect, Tetengi with an understanding to slaughter the boy and share his body among the three of them which included Aminatu.Investigations by the police revealed the victim was slaughtered by Tetengi, who roasted the boy and shared his body with Fatima and Aminatu as planned.Upon his return from his trip with no trace of his son, the victim’s father reported the case at the Bida Divisional Police Headquarters, to unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of the nine-year-old boy.The Police commenced preliminary investigation into the matter after which the arrests of the three suspects were made and the case was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department of the state police command.The suspects confessed to the crime during interrogation by the homicide detectives adding that human flesh was tastier than those of animals.The Police Public Relations Officer, Niger State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ibrahim Abiodun Gambari, confirmed the incident saying “the three suspects confessed to the crime upon interrogation and were charged to court on first information report for the offence of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, cannibalism and killing of an innocent citizen, an offence punishable under the law.”

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced it will be donating $50million (N8billion) to support the efforts of Nigeria and other West African countries hit by the Ebola Virus outbreak in containing the spread of the deadly virus. Announcing this in a statement issued today September 10th, the foundation said the money will be immediately released to the United Nations agencies and international organizations that are involved in the Ebola fight to enable them and national governments purchase needed supplies and scale up emergency operations.
Th foundation also announced the immediate release of an additional $2million to the various Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to support incident management, treatment, and health care system strengthening during this epidemic.
The foundation also pledged to work with private and public organizations to facilitate the speedy development of therapies, vaccines, and diagnostics that could be effective in treating patients and preventing further transmission of the disease.

Cardinal Francis George, head of the Catholic archdiocese of Chicago, said the levers of power in government, education, entertainment, and media are enforcing a “public creed,” a “fake church” that requires all citizens to approve of gay marriage and related sexual anomalies or be punished by the State, just “as Christians and Jews are fined for their religion in countries governed by Sharia law.”
Cardinal George, who was president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in 2007-10, made his remarks in his Sept. 7 column for the archdiocesean newspaper. In his commentary, the cardinal explains that America, despite social frictions at certain times, had always strived to ensure religious freedom and respect for different religions.
The State, in the past, had “kept its promise to protect all religions and not become a rival to them, a fake church,” said the cardinal.
But that has now changed, he said. “In recent years, society has brought social and legislative approval to all types of sexual relationships that used to be considered ‘sinful,’” he continued. “Since the biblical vision of what it means to be human tells us that not every friendship or love can be expressed in sexual relations, the church’s teaching on these issues is now evidence of intolerance for what the civil law upholds and even imposes.”
“What was once a request to live and let live has now become a demand for approval,” said Cardinal George, whose archdiocese includes about 2.2 million Catholics. “The ‘ruling class,’ those who shape public opinion in politics, in education, in communications, in entertainment, is using the civil law to impose its own form of morality on everyone.”
“We are told that, even in marriage itself, there is no difference between men and women, although nature and our very bodies clearly evidence that men and women are not interchangeable at will in forming a family,” he said. “Nevertheless, those who do not conform to the official religion, we are warned, place their citizenship in danger.”
The cardinal then noted that Americans who objected on religious grounds to the Obamacare mandate on contraceptives, sterilizations, and abortion-inducing drugs, were chastised by many in the media, including the liberal Huffington Post, which claimed the opposition, and the six Catholic judges on the Supreme Court, raised “concerns about the compatibility between being a Catholic and being a good citizen.”
This was not the anti-Catholic voice of nativists, or the Know-Nothing Party, or the Ku Klux Klan, said the cardinal, but, “rather, the self-righteous voice of some members of the American establishment today who regard themselves as ‘progressive’ and ‘enlightened.’”
“The inevitable result is a crisis of belief for many Catholics,” said Cardinal George. “Throughout history, when Catholics and other believers in revealed religion have been forced to choose between being taught by God or instructed by politicians, professors, editors of major newspapers and entertainers, many have opted to go along with the powers that be.”
“This reduces a great tension in their lives, although it also brings with it the worship of a false god,” he said. “It takes no moral courage to conform to government and social pressure. It takes a deep faith to ‘swim against the tide,’ as Pope Francis recently encouraged young people to do at last summer’s World Youth Day.”
The cardinal continued, “Swimming against the tide means limiting one’s access to positions of prestige and power in society. It means that those who choose to live by the Catholic faith will not be welcomed as political candidates to national office, will not sit on editorial boards of major newspapers, will not be at home on most university faculties, will not have successful careers as actors and entertainers.”
“Nor will their children, who will also be suspect,” he said.
“Since all public institutions, no matter who owns or operates them, will be agents of the government and conform their activities to the demands of the official religion, the practice of medicine and law will become more difficult for faithful Catholics,” said Cardinal George. “It already means in some States that those who run businesses must conform their activities to the official religion or be fined, as Christians and Jews are fined for their religion in countries governed by Sharia law.”
Cardinal George went on to argue that U.S. civil law has done much to weaken and destroy the family, which in turn has forced the State to impose more and more restrictions on people and their activities that are unloosed from the “internal restraints that healthy family life teaches.”
He also says that many of the “tenets of the official State religion” are largely dictated by elements of a certain social class, noting that “’same-sex marriage,’ as a case in point, is not an issue for the poor or those on the margins of society.”
How the situation may end, said the cardinal, is unclear because there are many Americans, “even among the ruling class, who do not want their beloved country to transform itself into a fake church.”
Catholics and traditional Christians know by faith, said Cardinal George, that Christ will return to judge the living and the dead and the church “will be there to meet Him.”
However, “[t]here is no such divine guarantee for any country, culture or society of this age or any age,” concluded Cardinal George.
The archdiocese of Chicago, established in 1843, serves about 2.2 million Catholics through 356 parishes, and with more than 1,400 priests and 1,600 women religious. The archdiocese operates 44 schools and 5 colleges, the latter educating 49,000 students. The archdiocese also oversees 17 Catholic hospitals, assisting 2.6 million people a year, and helps another 1.2 million people through 150-plus different charities.

While science arrives at final answers that it is willing to revise and upend as knowledge expands, religion starts with the final answers and spends its lifetime protecting the answers against the increasing wave of new knowledge and understanding. Maybe by opening our minds a little wider than the restrictions of our religions allow, we may tone down the feeling that our religion is better than theirs and that they must accept our own religion to be humans. I strongly believe that those who see the world as wide as it is will be very reluctant to assign their religion as the final answer for which they are willing to kill others for not believing.
In this part two, I have gathered more of the scientific thinking of this day around the question: is there life beyond this one? Religions as we have them today must dismiss that question because the day another being, call it an alien or something extraterrestrial, walks into our world, that day, all religions we know today will die. The impact will be ten folds of what happened when the Europeans walked into Africa holding the Bible on one hand and guns on the other. )
Correct Me If I am Right In 1977, NASA launched voyager 1 and 2. Their mission was to go where no man-made object had ever gone and find things man could only imagine. More than 30 years after, Voyager 1 is more than 18.8 billion miles from earth while Voyager 2 is about 15.3 billion miles away from our planet. Voyager 1 has since crossed the heliosphere – that is the magnetic boundary that separates the solar system’s sun and planets from the rest of the galaxy. It was the first man-made object to cross that line. It’s now floating in the cosmic seas of interstellar space. In another 40,000 years, it will fly near stars that used to be beyond our reach. The Voyager 1 carries time capsules in the form of a golden disc of images and sounds that will tell extraterrestrials about us. Though they each have storage space of 68KB memory scientists hope to learn from them what else is out there. But is telling extraterrestrials about us a good thing?
We cannot really know what really happens when we die if we don’t really know where we are, who shares this universe with us, where this ever expanding universe is heading to and those black holes left behind when a star dies, are they telling us something about what happens when we die?
On any given bright night, when you look up in the sky, you see about 2000 stars. That number is about one out of every 100,000 stars that we have in our galaxy. Scientists estimate that there are about 100 -400 billion stars in our galaxy. Out of these stars, they believe that one billon of them have earth-like planets. If life developed in only 1% of these earth-like planets there will be 100,000 intelligent civilizations in our galaxy.
In the observable universe, it is believed that there are roughly 500 quintillion or 500 billion billion stars like our own sun. Conservative estimates put the number of these sun-like stars with earth–like planets to be 100 billion billion. To get a good picture of it, Tim Urban, writing in the blog, Wait But Why, says that for every grain of sand on earth, there are 100 Earth-like planets. Scientists postulate that if life developed in just 1% of these earth-like planets, there may be 10 million billion intelligent civilizations in the universe that we can observe.
Yet, an organization dedicated to the quest to discover other intelligent life called SETI( Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) has not picked up any signal from anywhere. Project Ozma, Project Cyclops, SERENPID have all failed to find any other form of life. Why?
This high estimate of the probability of extraterrestrial life and the lack of evidence that they exist is what is called The Fermi Paradox. It is named after physicist, Enrico Fermi who studied these possibilities and asked the question, “Where is everybody?”
Here are some of the arguments made by Enrico Fermi and Michael H. Hart.
Considering the age of the universe, our sun is young. The earth is only 4.54 billion years old. Older earth-like planets that are billions of years ahead of us will most probably have more advanced civilizations. If you imagine the advancement we made in the last 2000 years, then imagine what difference there will be in a civilization that is millions of years ahead of ours.
Using Freedman Dyson’s theory of the Dyson’s sphere, scientists broke down civilization into three types: Type I are those civilization that can harness all the energy in their planets. Type II are those that can utilize all the energy in their host star. Type III are those that can tap all the energy in their galaxy. We are still struggling to accomplish the first. A civilization that can do the third must be one that can travel from one star to another. Scientists estimate that if 1% of intelligent life survives to reach Type III civilization then we should have at least 1,000 Type III Civilization in our galaxy alone.
Such civilization will be so powerful that we cannot miss them. So why is it that we have not seen them or heard from them? There are several arguments. One is that the reason we don’t see them is because there are no Type II and Type III Civilizations out there. The other explanation is that they are out there but we are not seeing them for other reasons.
If there are no Type I and Type II civilizations out there despite what scientific calculations suggest, then it follows that there must be a Great Filter that stops all life from advancing beyond a certain point. If the argument of The Great Filter as proposed by Robin Hanson is true, the question for us is where are we on that journey? Are we approaching the Great Filter or have we passed it? If we are approaching it, then, we are doomed. If we have passed it, then we are the first.
If the European spacecraft, Rosetta, finds life on comet 67P in December, or we find life anywhere else, it may mean that we are not special and we are not rare and the Great Filter is definitely behind us.
Now, if there is intelligent life out there, and we have not seen or heard from them, it could be for many reasons. Maybe they were here some 60,000 years ago before humans, in the form we are today, emerged. And since the universe is so vast, maybe their return journey is 100,000 years ahead. Or maybe they came when man had not started recording his story, as in any time before 6,000 years ago. It could also be that they are already in our galaxy but we just live in a part they have not yet visited, like new tribes just discovered in the Amazon rainforest who did not know they are in a country called Brazil long colonized by the Portuguese. It could also be that they have created a perfect world for themselves and do not want to be bothered with us in our ghetto.
Another option is that maybe there is a dreadful predator out there and other intelligent lives do not want to attract its attention by sending out signals – which Tim Urban thinks makes our idea of reaching out to them via the Messaging to Extraterrestrial Intelligence) METI stupid. Again, there is the option that a higher intelligent life that lives in a civilization that is very advanced exists but exterminates other intelligent life that gets to a level that threatens their domination. So they are watching us the way we watch ants and once we get any close to being a threat to them, like when we jump from one solar system’s sun to another, like NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 are doing, they will strike. There is the possibility that other intelligent lives are out there but we cannot hear them because our technology is very poor. Maybe in 2,000 years from now we will have the kind of technology to hear their voices and capture their energy. Also, it could be that we live in their zoo, a reservation, a kind of National Park, which they observe and do not touch. This argument is called the zoo hypothesis.
These arguments are not slowing scientists down. With proposals to launch the Von Neumann probe, a series of self-replicating devices that could go beyond where our imagination can reach now, the search for answers is just at the early age.
It was only 500 years ago that Nicolaus Copernicus showed us how wrongly we had understood where we are when he proved that the earth is not the center of the universe. Before him, every man and woman who ever lived got the wrong interpretation of the place of the sun in the universe. Imagine other million things we have been, and still are, all getting wrong. And it was only in 1600 that Antonie van Leeuwenhoek used a handmade microscope to see bacteria. Before him the church had believed that small organisms do not procreate but generate spontaneously and mankind attributed the activities of bacteria to spirits and other bizarre phenomenon.
As we explore space and time we widen our horizon, contemplating the possibility that we are living in a simulated reality. But without consciousness, will space and time still exist as we imagined it? Without spacecraft and telescopes, does the new space and time that we behold exist? The truth is that we don’t know what is really out there. The answers that we have today are simply the answers of today. The realities of tomorrow are definitely going to change them. From the look of things, the answers of today are not the final answers. The same way, we don’t know what really happens when we die. Only the dead, like Prophet Elijah Ireti Ajanaku, are truly educated.

Operatives of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) who invaded shrines in some communities in Delta and Bayelsa States found out that the people were ‘worshipping’ the stolen crude oil.
The stolen crude oil were found buried inside traditional grounds, fetish shrines, sitting rooms in some houses and septic tanks to avoid detections by security agencies.
The task force, which was confounded by the desperation of the oil thieves, said in a statement signed by the Coordinator of the Joint Media Campaign Centre of the Task Force, Lt.Col. Mustapha Anka, that the illegal oil bunkering squad of the JTF Operation Pulo Shield uncovered the new tactics applied by oil thieves operating in the Niger Delta region following the seizure of a 12,000 litres capacity sewage truck loaded with stolen crude oil.
The sewage truck was intercepted in Ibada Amukpe community in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.
“The sewage truck was later declared to be carrying waste and heading to a disposal, but was discovered to be carrying stolen crude oil.
Both the suspects and the product are now in the custody of the JTF for preliminary investigation before handing them over to prosecuting agency. Meanwhile, the troops attached to the JTF launched a security operation against suspected criminals in Bayelsa State and discovered one AK 47 assault rifle with registration number CK28817.
According to the JTF, “One foreign made double-barrel shot gun and a locally made single-barrel shot gun with 12 live cartridges were also recovered. No arrest was made as the criminals had escaped before the arrival of the troops. The weapons and the cartridges are in the JTF custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the criminals.
“Also, the troops of the JTF raided eight illegal bunkering sites at Opumani creek and Adudu in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, where oil thieves operated with 10 pumping machines, 17 cooking points, three illegal storage tanks and eight metal tanks.
Other items discovered at the sites included 13 Cotonou boats and illegal bunkering hoses. “The sites and equipment were destroyed on the spot, in line with the task force mandate in the Niger Delta. A surveillance supervisor with a private security guard were also arrested in connection with the illegal oil bunkering.
In a related development, the JTF squad operating along Bayelsa and River States general area has arrested a 33,000 litres capacity truck with Lagos registration number RRP 132 XA containing substance suspected to be illegally acquired diesel “The suspects abandoned the trucks and fled on sighting the troops. Both the trucks and its contents have been destroyed. The task force also destroyed 17 illegal oil bunkering camps along freedom creek where oil thieves operates with six Cotonou boats,13 crude oil reservoir and a boat filled with suspected stolen oil.”
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Police Command yesterday confirmed the arrest of six suspected pirates and armed robbery suspects following a security operation launched in some parts of the state capital and the coastal communities in the state.
While three suspected pirates were arrested by the Marine Police formation along Akassa waterways of Brass Local Government Area, another three suspected armed robbers were arrested by security operatives attached to the Akenfa Police Divisonal Command and the Ijaw House building.
The spokesman of the state Police Command, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, identified the arrested pirates to include Akosi Godlaw,Aboy Isou and Femi Odigiri. The arrested armed robbers are Ebi Vincent (20), Victor Elvis (20) and Henry Dogo (22).
According to Akhigbe, “The suspected pirates were arrested after they had successfully attacked a passenger boat along the Akassa waterways at about 11.15a.m. and dispossessed them of their valuables. Our marine police personnel chased them and arrested the three suspects. “Policemen attached to the Ijaw House building along the Sani Abacha expressway on August 5 at about 4p.m. sighted a commercial tricycle popularly known as ‘Keke Napep’ and became suspicious of the passengers. They chased and caught the Keke Napep and searched the passengers, a locally made pistol was found on a passenger with two cartridges. The case has been transferred to the state CID.”
“Another case of suspected armed robbery was also recorded at about 11.30p.m. on August 3 when three suspected armed with a pistol went to attack one Roland Simon’s shop along the Winners Church road in Etegwe area. They dispossessed their victim of recharge cards worth N42,000 and a cash worth N8,000. They were chased by the patrol team of the police and arrested.”

A Nigerian actor, Chris Bassey, was arrested recently when he disrupted an Arik Air flight from Enugu to Lagos with a hoax call, that a female passenger who was travelling on the flight was infected with the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
When the female passenger was tested on arrival at the Lagos airport, she tested negative, prompting the airline to order for Bassey’s arrest.
He would be charged to court next Monday for raising a false alarm which disrupted the operations of the airline.
THISDAY learnt that at about 1.05p.m. on August 29, a “certain man from Enugu” called the airline’s customer call centre to alert the airline that his girlfriend who was under quarantine for the EVD had escaped and was on board flight W3 611 from Enugu to Lagos.
“Immediately the flight landed at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) in Ikeja, Lagos, Arik Air’s ground staff who had been placed on alert approached the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) medical personnel, but the FAAN officials at GAT said they didn’t have the requisite equipment to screen passengers for the Ebola virus symptoms.
“The aircraft was therefore taxied to the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport. There, the Port Heath officials supervised the disembarking of the passengers and therefore directed the female passenger to be transferred to the clinic for checks. “The lady was later discovered to be free of Ebola symptoms after thorough examination. She then told Arik Air personnel that her boyfriend who made the malicious call from Enugu did that to smear her name because they had a misunderstanding.
“She further disclosed that she reported the boyfriend to the Police in Enugu on August 28.” THISDAY has confirmed that Bassey was arrested in Enugu and may be charged to court on Monday because the incident distrupted Arik’s operations on day. It was alleged that the Port Health officials’ response at MMIA was slow and it took them more than one hour to come out to screen the passenger.
A senior official of the airline linked the incident to hoax bomb calls made by terror organisations to disrupt flights.
“We are on that case. A man reported that a female passenger had Ebola because he didn’t want to her to travel. We have taken it to the police. This is not good for us because it frightens the passengers. It is the same thing they do with bomb threats which force airlines to evacuate passengers. We lose passengers because it makes people to become afraid to travel,” the official said.
