The United Nations’ 2022 World Mental Health Day: A Call for Proactive Action

As the world marks the World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2022, the National Association of Seadogs – Pyrates Confraternity has expressed concern that this year’s event does not end up as “mere ritual for speech making and grand declarations that fail to speak to the issues. We therefore use this to call on the relevant stakeholders to ensure that concrete steps that will frontally address the issue are taken.”

The association said as a country presented with another opportunity to focus on and address an issue that has continued to be a source of concern, noted that mental illness has evolved into what behavioural scientists call a phenomenon and the data is such that if we continue to ignore it, we do so at our collective peril.

This year’s event, according to the group, has the theme: Make Mental Health and Wellbeing for All A Global Priority is important as it seeks to draw attention to the issues relating to mental health.

Mental wellness according to the WHO is “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

Mental ill-health has grown into a global menace; a report from The Adracare Team states that 1 out of 5 Americans, aged 18 and above, live with mental illness. However, more alarming is the statistics released in a 2019 report of the World Health Organization, (WHO) which reveals that one in four Nigerians – some 50 million people are suffering from some sort of mental illness. Even more worrisome is the fact that the same report states that the country is nowhere near equipped to tackle the problem. Instances of suicide which most often is precipitated by mental illness have been burgeoning of late. There have been several cases of individuals that jumped to their death on the 3rd Mainland Bridge in what we may preliminarily categorize as anomic suicide.

A statement by Olamide Oni Capoon, Sahara Deck, National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates’ Confraternity), Abuja City Centre said, “while we recognize that there is a multiplicity of factors that may predispose to mental illness, some of the most common in our shores are: use of recreational drugs, poverty, traumatic experience – especially common among those unfortunate enough to have been at the receiving end of the horrors of boko-haram insurgency, kidnap victims and genetic factors, poor medical and professional care, cultural practices, superstition, and social stigma. Poor medical and professional care, certain cultural practices, superstition, and social stigma are also among the factors that tend to exacerbate mental ill-health. Families of mentally ill persons keep them in hiding, more concerned about the social standing that seeks medical care for them. There is also a dearth of specialized medical institutions and certified psychiatrists in the country. Some communities and cultures see mental illness as a curse, and therefore believe the cure is in exorcisms and other spiritual means.”

Text of the statement further read: “As members of the National Association of Seadogs – Pyrates Confraternity, we believe firmly in a just and equitable society where everyone is as much as possible, exposed to equal life’s chances. We, therefore, use this to call on the relevant agencies of government and other stakeholders to use this opportunity to formulate policies that speak to the very heart of the issues, repeal the old legislations on the subject while passing new laws with input from the critical stakeholders. When there is a well formulated policy in place, then there can be appropriations at new budget cycles wherein the government can fund the establishment of institutional structures that address the peculiar problem. Specialized hospitals can be sited at the various urban centers and certified mental health personnel trained. Preventive measures such as fighting the menace of drug abuse especially among the youths, improving the general quality of life through a robust and growing economy are some of the preventive measures that can also be applied.”

In commemoration of this year’s “World Mental Health Day”; the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity), Sahara Deck – Abuja City Centre, has concluded plans to donate drugs to patients at the Behavioral Home in Karu, Abuja. The group will also embark on a 7-kilometer morning walk to sensitize members of the public on the need to take mental health seriously, in line with this year’s theme: “Make mental health and wellbeing for all; a global priority”.

“According to the latest United Nations data, nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from some form of mental disorder, and one in seven teenagers are affected. In Nigeria, over 60 million people suffer from mental illnesses, according to the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN). Despite the huge number of people affected globally, mental disorders are widely under-reported in the media, a situation that forces the issue to the background, in global health discourse.

“Therefore, to draw more attention to this global menace, NAS Sahara Deck invites members of the public to participate in its health walk, slated for Monday, October 10. The Capoon of National Association of Seadogs, Sahara Deck, Olamide Oni, called on governments at all levels to prioritize reducing the factors that predispose people to mental illness and improving conditions that people need to thrive. Later in the month, the deck will also be having a public lecture on mental health; where experts in the field will be invited to x-ray issues as it concerns mental health.”

If you have the opportunity to leave Nigeria, please do so as quickly as possible – Azuka Onwuka

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 9 Second

When I graduated from the university in 1994, the American visa lottery program (Diversity Visa) was on and new, having been established by the US Immigration Act of 1990.
Some friends applied and got it, but somehow I was not passionate about it.
Why?
Even with all the military misrule and instability caused by the June 12, 1993, presidential election annulment, somewhere in my subconscious, I believed that Nigeria would turn around. I felt it was not patriotic to leave Nigeria.

I searched for a job and got one and focused on my career.
When I got my first visa to the US, some friends and kinsmen asked me if I would return to Nigeria. I said with certainty that I would return within a week. And I did.
The same thing happened when I went to the UK some years earlier. I was eager to return home.

Note that all this while, I was not working in any big company or holding any political or government post. My salary was so-so – just enough to take care of my basic needs.
When the Canadian permanent resident program started in 2002, after the 2001 passage of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, I was also not interested because somewhere in my subconscious, I didn’t want to give up on Nigeria. Close friends and family members left, but I refused to apply.
I don’t like regretting my actions, because I usually don’t act based on impulse. I act with deep conviction. But looking back, it was a bad decision not to leave Nigeria.
Leaving Nigeria is not a lack of patriotism. It is a matter of finding personal peace and happiness. Nigeria is a killer of dreams. Also, life means very little in Nigeria. When someone is killed, people exclaim for a few minutes and then face other issues. Life continues.

Forget how much you earn or how comfortable you are in Nigeria; if you have the opportunity to leave Nigeria, please do so as quickly as possible.
You alone cannot salvage Nigeria. There is no sign that Nigeria even wants to be salvaged.
When and if Nigerians are ready to salvage Nigeria, they will do so, if it is still possible to do so.
But if you are still in Nigeria, make sure you obtain your voter’s card and vote for your conscience during any election, without listening to what naysayers and those who love to maintain the status quo say.

When the situation of things is bad, all options can be explored.
May God continue to protect us all.

Video: The downfall of politicians is revealed in TB Joshua’s prophecy

Read Time:55 Second

TB Joshua’s prophecy about the APC’s several presidential aspirants surfaces online. In the prophecy, he also revealed the downfall of popular politicians.

This is a message for the people of Nigeria. There will be a leadership struggle in the APC about who will lead and run for President, and this will have an impact on the party as a whole.

“They must be cautious. Many are not members of the group, although they are present. I’ll say it again. They must be cautious. Many are not members of the group, although they are present. That is, many people are with them in body but not in spirit. They must be cautious.

“It’s a culture, When they hear this, work on it and pray about it. At last, the PDP will pay any price to unite. They will pay any price to unite. I don’t know the price that they will pay but this is what God showed me. That is about PDP.

Nigeria Govt no dey work again.

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 5 Second
All these senseless deaths and killings, and the fact that practically nothing is working in this country, are symptoms of the FAILURE OF STATE-CRAFT. In simple pidgin English, Govt no dey work again.
And the only practical solution is for all of us to convert all this righteous anger toward voting in a responsible Govt at the federal, state and local levels.
WITH THE NEW ELECTORAL ACT, THIS IS DOABLE.
Anyone offering you any other solution aside from this is simply taking you on a long emotional voyage to nowhere. That Buhari has been able to mess up our lives the way he likes for the past 7 years is because he has the power of Govt.
After the power of God, Political Power is the second most powerful power anywhere in the world.
Every nation, every group, and every organization rises and falls on LEADERSHIP. To this end, I appeal to you, in the name of all that you hold dear,
GO OUT TOMORROW AND GET YOUR PVC (Permanent Voters Card). Your lives for the next 8 years actually depend on that PVC and the choice you make with it.
If you are a social media person reading me right about now, I urge you to volunteer at an INEC centre near you to help make the process go smooth as well as protect people from greedy and unscrupulous INEC staff members who might want to frustrate them.
I will be at Okpara Square, Enugwu tomorrow morning from 9 am with other volunteers from Enugwu to ensure the exercise goes smooth. If you encounter any MAN-MADE challenges while trying to register for your PVC tomorrow at Okpara Square, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. We have other sensitization programs which we will be unveiling soon towards getting people to go get their PVC. We intend to get all the major markets, supermarkets and restaurants on how to put a big notice sensitizing people about the need to go get the PVC. This is purely our voluntary contribution towards saving ourselves from the ugly situation in which we found ourselves.
YOU, too, SHOULD GET INVOLVED IN YOUR AREA AND START USING WHATEVER MEANS TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO GO GET THEIR PVC.
The low number of registered voters in the southeast is quite troubling. But we can change this ugly story.
Aside from voting in a credible Govt at the centre, we also owe it to ourselves to pay more attention to the calibre of people we vote in to manage our home front (state and local Govt plus the national and local houses of parliament).
The 2023 election is one election that will determine whether we l!ve or we die, and I mean this literally. If we get it wrong, we are doomed. If we get it right, we may yet be redeemed from this impending army of the dead.
Many of you may not realize it, but the root cause of MOST of the problems we’ve been battling with stems from having absolute idiots manage our destinies at the state level, which gives them the power to influence who manages the local Govt offices which are closest to the people.
Let me take my own Southeast for example; so many Igbo youths have complained that our governors do not have our interests at heart. They failed to create a regional security outfit when we all wailed and cried for one. Ironically, we take no action in changing these governors when opportunities present themselves. Not only are they about finishing their tenures, but they are also about installing their successors BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO INTEREST IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS. With the new electoral Act which drastically reduces the chances of rigging, the chances of our votes counting have gone higher.
And let me touch on the big elephant in the room; some Biafra agitators say they want no part in anything election. Good! The problem is, you stand absolutely no chance at getting an independent Biafra Nation without participating in the political process because all through history, no people have ever extricated a new Nation from an existing one without following either the POLITICAL PROCESS or WAR. There is actually no 3rd option. You must have some form of political control over the region you are seeking secession for. And the fact that you don’t control even an ordinary councillorship seat anywhere in “BiafraLand” is a FUNDAMENTAL problem.
It’s not just enough to shout that you want Biafra, you must have a practical plan as to HOW you intend to get Biafra. You must be willing to go through the Political Process unless you have the means to subdue the Nigerian state MILITARILY, which remains doubtful as of today.
So in the end, you actually need to go get your PVC. Even your referendum is a Political Process that may require the PVC.

Kalu Ikeagwu tells Court Wife Denied Him Sex

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 59 Second

Nollywood star actor, Kalu Ikeagwu, has prayed the Ikeja high court to dissolve his six-year marriage to his estranged wife, Ijeoma.

Ikeagwu alleged during the court session that his wife deserted their matrimonial home and prevented him from gaining access to their two children.

Under cross-examination by S.I. Amedu, his wife’s counsel, the film star said Ijeoma packed out of their matrimonial and sent him a mail that she was on her way to her father’s house in Enugu.

He, however, said contrary to her claim, he saw her at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport with the children after some days.

“I got back home from a trip on Aug. 4, 2021 to find out that my wife had left our matrimonial home with the children to an undisclosed location.”

“I tried to contact her when I got to the house and found it empty. I sent her an email on that same day and she replied that she had gone to her father’s house in Enugu.”

“She told me she was at her father’s place in Enugu and four days later, I saw her at the airport in Lagos, heading to God knows where. In the mail she sent, she said she was In Enugu.”

The actor also dismissed claims that he sent his wife and kids out of the house and failed to provide for their upkeep.

“I did not send her out of the house. Someone has to tell me why it takes four days to get to Enugu from Lagos,” he added.

“If your say ‘you are on your way’ it means it is a continuous sentence. It was a stated fact that she was on her way.”

He  further told the court that his wife denied him sex and also poured water on him while he was asleep.

The petitioner added that he was not aware that his wife lost a pregnancy due to a sexually transmitted infection while they were together.

“After the birth of our son, she has refused to have sex with me. I was not aware she lost the pregnancy due to an infection as I did not give her any infection.”

“Till date, I have not seen any report attached to a document that she lost a baby through STD. Though I did not ask her why she lost the baby.”

Requesting for custody of his kids, he said:

“I want custody of the two children. The reason I sought revocation was that my wife had turned my step-daughter against me and at that point, I got a hint that she wanted to fly the children abroad.”

“I have never been married to any woman before I got married to my wife. I married her after she had her daughter.”

“I earlier said the issue of revocation was because I felt she wanted to use me. My Lord, look at the precedence of how I have treated the girl from the very beginning.”

“I am an actor by profession and I travel to location within and outside Nigeria in which I can spend five days to one month.”

“At the moment it may be difficult but I am thinking about the future when I remarry and get a stable wife.”

The Judge, Christopher Balogun, had earlier ordered the children to play with their father in court. He also directed the respondent to present the receipts of the tuition fees paid for the children in court.

Balogun then adjourned the case to June 23 for the continuation of the hearing.

Lagos Teacher Flogs Pupil Over Homework, Victim Vomits, Dies

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 56 Second

A student of Simple Faith Schools, Agbara, Lagos, has died after he was allegedly flogged by his teacher. Emmanuel Amidu died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Surulere.
The victim’s father, Akinola Amidu, claimed that the 12-year-old JSS2 student was flogged by a teacher at school for not completing his assignment on Thursday, May 12, 2022.

He said his son started vomiting shortly after the beating and was rushed to a hospital, where he gave up the ghost on Friday, May 13, 2022.
The father alleged that the school management was covering up his son’s death and protecting the mathematics teacher, one Steven, who flogged Emmanuel and the rest of the class for failing to do their homework, Punch reports.

He said: “I was at home that Thursday because I was on leave. I recall that Emmanuel asked me for money to buy a new exercise book and I gave him N500 to buy the book and give the remaining change to his sister.
“Later that day, I was called by the management of the school that Emmanuel was vomiting. Meanwhile, this was a boy who left home without any health issues. I had to go to the school, and we moved him to a hospital.
“I later learnt that the whole thing started after their class teacher, Mr Steven, beat the whole of his class for not completing their mathematics assignment.
“Emmanuel was actually using my phone torchlight to do his assignment a day before, but I had to collect the phone from him and his sister because I needed to be in contact with the office. We had issues with our electricity at home.

“It was at LUTH that I lost my son. Meanwhile, the management of the school quickly ran to the Morogbo Police Station at Agbara to report that my son died from vomiting.
“How can somebody just die from vomiting if nothing triggers it? The management of the school is trying to protect the teacher.”
Akinola, 45, demanded the arrest and prosecution of the teacher.

The school Principal, Adetayo Akanji, told Punch: “I was there when Emannuel died on Friday and it was unfortunate that it happened this way. Yes, Steven flogged the whole class for not doing their sums, but not with the intention to hurt them.’

Stop helping poor people – Activist, Reno Omokri advises

Read Time:54 Second

Activist, Reno Omokri

Activist, Reno Omokri has warned destiny helpers of poor people. According to him, helping a poor man who has no means of livelihood will cause a population explosion.

‘’Stop justifying giving help to a poor man because he has a wife and many kids.
Let him suffer! Such a man needs to suffer! Such a man needs to suffer so that other people see him suffer and learn not to have kids they can’t cater for. Or we will have more of such in the society if you help them.
If you keep helping men for the sole reason that they are poor and have many kids, their mentality will be: born as you like, God will use mumu people to help you train them. in case you don’t know, that is already the mentality of many low, or no wage earners, who have many children.
Your kindness is feeding that mentality and creating a population explosion, resulting in insecurity!”
