An Open Letter to The President Alhaji Umar Yar’Adua

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 18 Second

Your Excellency, President Yar ‘Adua,

It is most unfortunate that bureaucratic bottleneck has not allowed my many letters to reach your Office. The subject of my letter is the ‘Inga Dam Power (Electricity) Generation Project – on the River Congo – in the Democratic Republic of Congo. My submission is that with a leasehold agreement of the area for a period of about 1,000 years, and an investment of US $100 Billion, the future of Nigeria is guaranteed. There would also be electricity supply to all African countries

I am confident that Your Excellency did not receive any of my letters on the above subject, since I am fully aware that Your Excellency takes issues affecting Nigerians seriously. I bare no grudge whatsoever, as I am very sure that the People’s Forum – The Press would surely get it across to you if only as you read through the dailies.

The subject of this letter is how best to ameliorate the suffering of the Nigerian masses in the light of the power shortage and our seeming helplessness. I have come across a unique solution that I have tried desperately to bring to your attention. There can surely be no better time than now for Your Excellency to act on such a crucial national issue. The benefits are very numerous and obvious. It is the strategic positioning of Nigeria in Africa that makes the project very relevant and significant. We cannot afford to let the present and future generations of Nigerians down. The Project Outline below summarises the strategy to be adopted. Some of the issues highlighted in the Project Outline include but are not limited to:

    * The value of the Nigerian Naira – which would rank the same as that of American (US) Dollars and the Euro;
    * Creating immediate employment for Nigerian school-leavers of all ages, thus reducing crime and associated social vices;
    * Reducing dependence on Oil and therefore providing immediate reduction in the pressure of the Niger-Delta Crises;
    * Presently, there are estimated over 2 million generating sets in Nigerian homes. These are more than enough to kick-start an aggressive drive towards development of cottage industry based on local and indigenous needs of Nigeria and the region.

These, alongside other points in the document below are my reasons for requesting Your Excellency’s administration to please, invest in Nigeria and indeed her future.

May Your Excellency’s tenure be more successful than you have ever imagined.

Don’t wish Eagles bad because of Keshi — coach Fanny Amun

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 28 Second

Former Golden Eaglets coach Fanny Amun has come out from the trenches to hit back at those trying to cause trouble in the house of Nigerian football. A former scribe of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amun, who hails from Edo State remains an unrepentant apostle of the Federal Ministry of Sports. As Nigeria battle Congo today in Point Noire, Amun tells JOHN EGBOKHAN that Nigerians should not wish Eagles bad because of their disposition towards out-of-favour coach Stephen Keshi.

So much has happened to our football since the exit of Aminu Maigari as President of the Nigeria Football Federation. Is the change of guard good for our football development.

I want to put in on record that despite all the political troubles we had during his time in office that Maigari remains the most successful NFF leader that we have had. His record are there to see that under such an hostile environment he was still able to win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, as well as the Golden Eaglets triumph at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2013 as well as numerous other international and continental tournaments.

Maigari was a product of the crisis that took out Sani Lulu, who was also a product of crisis that swallowed Ibrahim Galadima, whose fall was orchestrated by some persons in the Sports Ministry.

s change in the leadership of the NFF as being allegedly masterminded by the Sports Ministry doing our football any good?

In the past, government’s interference was deemed not good for our nation’s football development, by those against government. It is curious to however note people are always quick to point at government’s interference when things don’t go their way, while those who benefit from the system say that it is not government’s interference. So the answer is always going to tilt to the divide to which you belong. The government is a stakeholder in football, so they have a right to jump into the fray.

At the last Elective Congress of the NFF in Warri on September 30, a credible Executive Committee was elected by the delegates and government has endorsed the board as being credible enough to take our football to the next level. This board led by Amaju Pinnick has come to stay. Age and wisdom are on the side of this board. In Pinnick, we have a king, who is young and has a longer lifespan to do well . Nobody can rubbish the tremendous works he has done in Delta State and what he will do in his new capacity in NFF.

Pinnick understudied great minds of Nigerian sports, like the late Patrick Okpomo and Solomon Ogba. He has the wealth of experience to transform our football and I see our football rising again to international prominence under this dispensation.

What is your disposition towards the Appeals Committee sitting on the NFF Elections?

It will be suicidal if anyone, knowingly or unknowingly will try to run back the hand of the clock. In any elections, people will always be angry. They will always cry wolf, blue murder but the thing is that there must be winners and losers in any election process.

It is instructive to note that the Appeals Committee is not bigger than the Executive Committee and that the only organ that can nullify the election in the Congress.

So let reason prevail and let us allow sleeping dogs to live in peace.

Today in Point Noire, Nigeria face the prospects of kissing bye to next year’s Nations Cup. The blame for this ugly scenario is being heaped on Coach Stephen Keshi, who somehow is still in charge of the team, despite massive outcry for his dismissal. Will Keshi not further jeopardize how AFCON chances?

All hell would not break out if we don’t qualify. Keshi is a human being, who has been successful during his time as Eagles coach. People should not wish the team bad because of Keshi. When you go into a match, you either lose, draw or win. Someone is supposed to win today’s match in Congo and my wish is for the Super Eagles to win.

How about the poor results that we have suffered in the last matches, which have made our chances bleak?

Keshi is in charge and part of his duties is to invite players who he feels can do well for Nigeria.

But that has been the issue all through this campaign

It is fair to say he should invite players who are doing well for now. But he will be judged by the results.

And the results have not been exactly favourable for us as we have wobbled and fumbled this far?

I don’t know what you are talking about because the process is not yet over.

As a grassroots coach, are you comfortable with Samson Siasia’s choice to coach the Olympic Eagles team?

He has always been in charge of our youth teams and it is only appropriate that he is in charge. The challenge for him is to produce stars who will form the bulk of the Super Eagles team to the 2018 World Cup in Russis. And he should also win the gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Andy Murray knocked out of World Tour Finals by Roger Federer

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 38 Second

Roger Federer thrashed Andy Murray 6-0 6-1 to end the Briton’s ATP World Tour Finals hopes in humiliating fashion.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion needed just 56 minutes to win his third Group B match and reach the semi-finals.

Murray required a straight-sets win to qualify but won only eight points in the first set and did not win a game until 6-0 5-0 down.

The result is Murray’s worst since he lost 6-1 6-0 to Novak Djokovic in Miami seven years ago.

Japanese world number five Kei Nishikori qualifies behind Federer after his earlier 4-6 6-4 6-1 victory over Spaniard David Ferrer – a replacement for the injured Milos Raonic.

“Clearly, I’m very happy to play a good match today,” Federer said. “I knew I was qualified so maybe I went in a bit more relaxed.

“It’s not the way I thought it was going to go, but there’s always next year for Andy and hopefully he can have a good season.

“At the end I was happy I didn’t win the second to last game to be quite honest.”

Jeremy Bates, former British number one

“Everyone who watches a lot of matches knows that is as close to perfection as you can possibly get. Everyone is in shock at that scoreline.”

After 24 minutes, Murray’s progress in the tournament was over as he suffered his first 6-0 set loss in four years.

“It was a tough night,” Murray said.

“I’ve lost Grand Slam finals, which have been very tough, but in terms of the way the match went it was not ideal from my side of the court – far from it.

“He played exceptionally well, that’s for sure. I can say I’m disappointed with my level tonight but if I played well, he probably still would have won anyway.”

A tight, tense encounter had been anticipated with the Scot needing a fast start, and Federer keen to win the group and so probably avoid top seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

In the event, only one player brought anything like his best game.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, courtside, on Murray: “There are some matches when we feel it’s not our day. Sometimes a big defeat is the start of many, many victories.”

The 17,000 spectators packed into the O2 must have thought they were in a for classic when Murray won the opening two points on Federer’s serve, before the Swiss won an epic 34-stroke rally on the third.

From that moment on it was one-way traffic as Murray struggled to find first serves and Federer produced some sublime tennis.

As the games rolled by, he even threatened to inflict the dreaded ‘double bagel’ on Murray, whose ambition became drastically reduced.

BBC Tennis correspondent Russell Fuller

Murray spoke of cutting short his holiday and making technical changes to his game in the immediate aftermath of a defeat that will come as a major shock to his system. Even in the face of what coach Stefan Edberg described as the best tennis Federer has played all year, Murray was simply steamrollered. He has lost all nine of this year’s matches against Djokovic, Nadal and Federer: a gulf in form and belief has opened up between Murray and the players he’s used to rubbing shoulders with in Grand Slam finals.

“Just try and win the point,” he said. “Try and set a target of winning points. Try and win two points in a row rather than trying to focus on, ‘OK, I want to get this game.’

“You just try and set smaller goals than that. That’s basically it.”

Federer moves on to the semi-finals and keeps his outside hopes of ending the year as world number one alive, although Djokovic can end that race should he beat Tomas Berdych on Friday.

Murray has won two Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold

Federer has won the World Tour Finals six times

Zimbabwe have more than just a fair distance to cover after trailing Bangladesh 503

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 21 Second

Zimbabwe 113 for 1 (Raza 54*, Masakadza 51*) trail Bangladesh 503 (Imrul 130, Tamim 109, Raza 3-123) by 390 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

A final onslaught bookended a great opening stand to power Bangladesh to 503 all out on the second day of the third Test. But Zimbabwe began their reply firmly too, ending up on113 for one at stumps with Sikandar Raza and Hamilton Masakadza on unbeaten fifties.

Zimbabwe have more than just a fair distance to cover to remain competitive in the game but that didn't stop Raza and Masakadza, who said before the game that they would go all out for the win, to go after the Bangladesh bowling and pick up easy boundaries.

Raza was unbeaten on 54 off 65 balls, having struck nine boundaries. He was severe against anything pitched in his half by Shafiul Islam and Taijul Islam, and used his feet very well against the spin. He drove the ball with confidence though there were moments when he looked slightly like losing control while attacking the spinners. This was Raza's third Test fifty, and it complemented the surprising role he had played with the ball in picking up three wickets.

Masakadza also reached his sixth half-century, off 71 balls. He played a relatively subdued role, but still struck seven fours and one six, a big hit over midwicket off Shakib Al Hasan.

Rubel picked up the only wicket of the day for Bangladesh, getting Brian Chari to thinly edge one to the keeper in the second over. The decision, initially given not out, had to be reviewed by Mushfiqur Rahim and he was proved right as the third umpire heard or saw something that amounted to an edge. This continued Rubel's great day after he had hammered four sixes towards the end of the Bangladesh innings.

Rubel's unbeaten career-best 45, coming off 44 balls with four sixes through midwicket and two fours, took the score past the 500-run mark. He shared a 51-run tenth wicket stand with Jubair Hossain, who was the final wicket to fall, in the 154th over.

Bangladesh scored exactly 200 runs on day two but their scoring rate wasn't as impressive as it had been on the first day. Shakib Al Hasan's 17th Test fifty, 71 off 110 balls, helped them consolidate losses in the middle-order. He struck seven boundaries, a couple of drives through cover and mid-off and two dinks through and over midwicket among them.

But he was dismissed to a superb catch by Craig Ervine, who dived full-length to his right in the covers to snap up a top-edge off Sikandar Raza. It was one of the bright spots in the day for the visitors who had to field for two-thirds of the day.

The day began well for Zimbabwe when Tinashe Panyangara removed Mominul with a delivery that moved slightly in the air, squaring up Bangladesh's No 4. Mominul made 48 off 100 balls with three fours.

Shakib started with the two glorious drives off Panyangara before seeing Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim fall after short partnerships. Mahmudullah made a lengthy 16, and never looked comfortable. Mushfiqur chopped on a Hamilton Masakadza delivery after making 15.

Shakib reached his fifty after the lunch break and was looking primed for the third century of the match when Ervine intervened with his long arms. Zimbabwe took three more wickets and got close to bowling out Bangladesh well before the tea break. But Rubel took a liking to Raza and Panyangara, smashing four sixes and even posing for the cameras with his final hit, which finished on one knee.

Raza finished with the best bowling figures, taking three for 123 from 36 overs. Panyangara, Shingirai Masakadza and Hamilton Masakadza took two wickets apiece but Natsai M'shangwe went wicketless through 47 overs.

Amadu writes FIFA on NFA crisis

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 20 Second

Abuja – The Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Musa Amadu, has written the world football governing body (FIFA) intimating it of the latest development in the country’s football house.

Amadu told newsmen in Abuja after close of work on Monday that the letter was to inform FIFA that he and few others returned to office and worked in the football secretariat unhindered.

Musa Amadu

FIFA had on Sept. 3 threatened to suspend Nigeria from football after it declared as illegal the Aug. 26 election that produced, Chris Giwa, as NFA Chairman.

FIFA had subsequently directed that the Aminu Maigari-led NFA board be returned to office to supervise a fresh election into the NFA board.

It also directed that the Maigari-led group return to office on Monday to perform their duties unhindered.

“I can confirm to you that I did write a letter just now to FIFA which I copied CAF informing them about the event of today.

“The development is in line with FIFA directives that we be allowed to come to the secretariat and do our work unhindered.

“Also those persons claiming to be elected did not come to the office just to allow us to do our work and I think at the end of the day reason has prevailed.

“This is because the crisis is inimical to the development of football for a big country like Nigeria which is a powerhouse in African football.

“I believe that the event of today will be cemented and peace will return to the Nigeria football,’’ Amadu said.

The NFA scribe explained that his reason for copying CAF was to ensure that Nigeria’s second AFCON qualifying match against South Africa went unhindered in Cape Town on Wednesday.

He pointed out that Maigari and his board members was expected back any time from now to ensure election into the board was concluded Sept. 25.

“From the letter we got from FIFA on Sept. 3, it was stated in clear terms that the Maigari-led board will preside over two emergency congresses.

“The first will be to elect members of the Electoral Committee and the Appeals Committee as well as another congress leading to election within the shortest possible time.

“I am not a member of the congress but I know that congress is trying to see that this election is held within the shortest possible time and for us to have election probably by Sept. 25.

“This is to enable the next NFA board to carry out their mandate from 2014 to 2018,’’ Amadu said.

NAN reports that the Giwa-led faction of the NFA board did not show up at the football secretariat on Monday.

The African champions begin their quest to qualify for the tournament slated to hold Morocco, against a a rejuvenated Congolese side, coached by experienced French tactician Claude Le Roy.

Emenike, Obiazor sparkle in Eagles training

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

Super Eagles only training session on Thursday evening at the UJ Esuene Stadium, was one that stood some players out, though all the stars, 22 of them are fit to start according to Head Coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi.

Hotshot, Emmanuel Emenike’s rising profile in front of goalkeepers was obvious as his powerful runs, crosses and blistering goals came to the fore even as he played on the side of the possible against the probables in the training session.

New boy, Christian Ighodaro Osagunna, also showedsigns that he has a future with the team, with smart play when given the ball in front of goalkeepers. But the man who stole the show on the evening was Elkanemi goalkeeper, David Obiaozor, who was having his first training session with the team. He dived, parried and clutched balls to the delight of hundreds of fans who turned out to watch the team’s training under very clement weather in Calabar.

After the session, Coach Keshi raised a fresh alarm about some impostors who have been using his name on facebook pretending to be Stephen Okechukwu Keshi. “I have heard about people posing as Keshi on facebook and I want to say because of this type of activities by deviants, I never set up a facebook account.

He continued: “I don’t have a facebook account, but I have my email and phones which is even restricted because people will be looking for ways to use this new wave of technology to dupe people. I call on relevant security authorities to put a stop to those parading themselves as Stephen Keshi on facebook”.

MLS Preview: Real Salt Lake look for attacking spark

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 9 Second

Jeff Cassar's men are second in the Western Conference, which the Seattle Sounders top by six points.

Joao Plata (eight goals) and Alvaro Saborio (six) have led the goalscoring for Real Salt Lake, but were the only two forwards on the board this season before Olmes Garcia's brace against the Montreal Impact.

Real Salt Lake general manager Garth Lagerwey said he and coach Cassar wanted to avoid turning to the transfer market.

"[We] have both been out looking at some options. Our preference remains, as I've expressed repeatedly, to keep our team," he said.

"We think these guys have earned it. We think we have a good, veteran group."

The Red Bulls sit fifth in the East but are winless in two matches and will be relying on the league's top goalscorer Bradley Wright-Phillips (17 goals).

A pair of the Eastern Conference's top sides also do battle on Wednesday as DC United host Toronto.

While DC are on a three-match winning league run, Toronto are winless in their past three outings.

The New England Revolution are out to end a seven-match losing run in all competitions when they host the Colorado Rapids.

The Vancouver Whitecaps could climb into the top five in the West with a victory at the Chicago Fire.
