Exclusive: undercover investigation by The Telegraph and Channel Four’s Dispatches programme finds that the President of Ghana’s Football Association agreed for the team to play in international matches that others were prepared to rig

Ghana has been exposed as agreeing to take part in international football matches organised by match fixers.

An undercover investigation by The Telegraph and Channel 4’s Dispatches programme found that the President of Ghana’s Football Association agreed for the team to play in international matches that others were prepared to rig.

The team is currently competing in the World Cup finals in Brazil, and on Saturday pulled off a 2-2 draw against Germany, in what was seen as one of the most entertaining games of the tournament so far.

However, it can now be revealed that the African team had been lined up to play in international fixtures whose results would be fixed by corrupted officials.

The Telegraph and Channel 4’s Dispatches launched a six-month investigation into match-fixing after receiving information that some football associations were working with criminal gangs looking to rig scores in international games.

Reporters from The Telegraph and a former Fifa investigator claimed they represented an investment company that wanted to “sponsor” games. Christopher Forsythe, a registered Fifa agent, along with Obed Nketiah, a senior figure in the Ghanaian FA, boasted that they could employ corrupt officials who would rig matches played by Ghana.

The president of the country’s football association then met the undercover reporter and investigator, along with Mr Forsythe and Mr Nketiah, and agreed a contract which would see the team play in the rigged matches, in return for payment.

The contract stated that it would cost $170,000 (£100,000) for each match organised by the fixers involving the Ghanaian team, and would allow a bogus investment firm to appoint match officials, in breach of Fifa rules.

“You [the company] will always have to come to us and say how you want it to go…the result,” said Mr Forsythe. “That’s why we will get the officials that we have greased their palms, so they will do it. If we bring in our own officials to do the match…You’re making your money.”

“You have to give them [the referees] something… they are going to do a lot of work for you, so you have to give them something,” said Mr Nketiah, who is also the chief executive of the Ghanaian football club Berekum Chelsea and sits on the management committee of the Ghana U20 national team.

Mr Forsythe said that match fixing was “everywhere” in football and that he could even arrange rigged matches between Ghana and British teams. “The referees can change the matches every time. Even in England it does happen,” he said. Following the meeting in London, the representative of the investment firm asked if his company could be sure their approach would work.

Mr Forsythe replied: “We will always choose associations/countries that we think we can corrupt their officials for all our matches.”

He listed a number of African and European countries, adding “we can look for match officials who will sing to our tune”.

Mr Forsythe and Mr Nketiah then introduced the undercover reporters to Kwesi Nyantakyi, the president of the Ghana FA, at a five-star hotel in Miami earlier this month shortly before his team played South Korea in Miami before heading to Brazil.

During the meeting in Florida, the president agreed to a contract that stated each match would cost the investment company $170,000 and that they could appoint the match officials for each game. A contract was drawn up that specified that “The Company will appoint and pay for the cost of the referees/match officials in consultation with an agreed Fifa Member association(s),” in direct breach of the rules that prohibit third parties from appointing officials, in order to protect their impartiality. During the meeting, the president suggested that the fictional investment company put on two matches after the World Cup to prove that they were able to organise games.

“So why don’t you arrange matches?” said Mr Nyantakyi. “Let’s say there should be an experimental period for us to see how we do your work? There is an opportunity in August, and then in December, but I don’t know about that. But these months appear to be the only time that we can have any opportunity to play friendly games.”

When a reporter asked if the president was happy with the contract, as long as it reflected the experimental period he had requested, he replied, “Yeah these are the issues that I’ve got with it.”

“So we can work on that with a trial game?” asked the investigator.

“Yeah,” replied the president.

Premier League stars were due to play in matches which will not now take place.

Ghana’s football stars include the ex-Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien and former Tottenham Hotspur player Kevin-Prince Boateng, although there is no suggestion that either, or any other player, is involved in match-fixing.

Last week saw the first convictions in the modern era of criminals in this country for attempting to rig football matches, following an earlier investigation by this newspaper.

Chann Sankaran and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, businessmen from Singapore, and Michael Boateng, a former professional footballer, were found guilty after a six-week trial.

Sankaran and Ganeshan were sentenced to five years and Boateng 18 months. Sankaran and Ganeshan have links to the notorious international match fixer Wilson Raj Perumal, and were said to be attempting to establish a network of corrupt footballers in Britain.

Last month, The Telegraph revealed police concerns over attempts to fix a game between Nigeria and Scotland that was due to be played in London. Officers from the National Crime Agency, Britain’s equivalent of the FBI which investigates organised crime, are understood to have asked Fifa to issue an alert over attempts to rig the game.

Terry Steans, a former Fifa investigator, said that the World Cup is “vulnerable” to match fixing.

“I know that the World Cup is vulnerable to these criminal gangs because they have existing networks of contacts at all levels inside the game and they will look for any vulnerability they can find to exploit,” he said.

“Match-fixing is widespread. It is happening at every level and in many countries. Match-fixing syndicates with criminal intent have infiltrated all levels of football and sport from national, regional and onto international. Fifa needs to do more.”

The revelations will heap further pressure on Fifa, which is facing huge controversy over its management of international football. Over the last month, Sepp Blatter, the president of Fifa, has faced calls to stand down after it emerged the former Qatari executive committee member had made millions of dollars in payments to Fifa officials.

In March, The Telegraph revealed that the same official had paid Jack Warner, one of the people that participated in the decision to award Qatar the 2022 World Cup, $1.2million shortly after the vote.

When they were confronted about their operation, both Mr Forsythe and Mr Nketiah denied any involvement in a plot to fix matches. Mr Nketiah said: “These are false allegations and I will never in my life do such a thing.”

As part of a statement, Mr Forsythe, said: “To be frank everything I told you about the match fixing was a figment of my own imagination because I am so naive that I don’t even know how matches are done. They were promises just to be able to get something off you.”

Mr Nyantakyi said that he had not read the contract and he did not know about the deal to fix games. He said that the proposed match would have been handled by a licensed Fifa match agent and that he was unaware that Mr Forsythe had demanded £30,000 for the football association.

The Ghanaian FA announced last night it has asked the Ghana Police Service to investigate Mr Forsythe and Mr Nketiah for "misrepresenting the GFA with an attempt to defraud".

The football body has also reported the matter to FIFA and CAF.

In a statement, it said: "We wish to assure the public that we will not tolerate such misrepresentations and we will seek strong sanctions against such individuals if such claims are found to be true."

Super Eagles won’t go beyond second round -Poll

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 57 Second

The Stephen Keshi-led Super Eagles team, which has been placed in Group F along with Argentina, Iran and Bosnia & Herzegovina in the 2014 World Cup, may not go beyond the second round.

This is the view of the majority of respondents that took part in PUNCH ONLINE EXTRA’s recent poll, with the question, ‘With the quality of players in the Super Eagles World Cup list, how far do you think the team will go?’

Respondents were presented with three choices – Second round, Quarter-finals and Semi-finals.

Considering the other teams in the group, particularly Iran and Bosnia & Herzegovina, it is easy to believe that Nigeria has a strong chance of proceeding beyond the first round of the competition.

But the outcome of the friendly warm-up matches, especially that against the US, on Saturday, which Nigeria lost 1-2, seems to have raised some concerns.

Five hundred and fifteen respondents took part in the poll.

The poll shows that 237 respondents, representing 46 per cent, believe Nigeria won’t go past the second round.

On the other hand, 124 respondents, which represent 24 per cent, have great faith in Keshi’s 23-man squad to get to the quarterfinals stage.

Conversely, 154 respondents, representing 30 per cent, are optimistic that the Super Eagles will get to the semifinals of the global sporting event.

A former international, Edema Fuludu, recently said, “From the friendlies I have seen, I do realise that it has been difficult for us to win a non-African side up till now.

“So, if we are going into the tournament we’ve not won any, I think that it is very imperative we win against Iran.”

Another former Super Eagles skipper, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, expressing his thoughts on Nigeria’s performances in the warm-up games, said more needed to be done to fortify the team’s midfield, hinting that a playmaker in his mould, was still sorely missed in the team.

Understandably, Nigeria’s Super Eagles keeper, Vincent Enyeama, along with his colleagues, believes the team will go far in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Senate President, David Mark, has been appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan to lead a high-powered Federal Government delegation to Brazil for the World Cup

Meanwhile, African Nations Champions (CHAN) hero, Ejike Uzoenyi, departed Lagos for Brazil last night to join the rest of his Super Eagles team-mates after he was selected as replacement for injured Elderson Echiejile in Nigeria's 23-man squad for the World Cup.
Uzoenyi had returned to Enugu where he had resumed training with his Glo Premier League club side, Enugu Rangers.

The Media Officer of the Flying Antelopes, Foster Chime, confirmed yesterday that Uzoenyi has already made travel arrangements to leave Nigeria tonight, for the South American nation.

"He trained with us Monday evening and this morning (yesterday)," Chime revealed to KickOffNigeria.com.
"He informed us during this morning's training exercise that he has already booked a mid-morning flight to Lagos, from where he will connect with a 10:00pm flight to Brazil."

Japan’s Yuichi Nishimura has been assigned as the referee for the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup between Brazil and Croatia tomorrow. He will be assisted by compatriots Toru Sagara and Toshiyuki Nagi, with Alireza Faghani of Iran designated as the fourth official.

Referee designations have been made for the first four matches of the World Cup and are available via the FIFA Media Channel and FIFA.com.

Nishimura, 42, is set to become the third Japanese referee to have officiated at two World Cup finals after Shizuo Takada (1986 and 1990) and Toru Kamikawa (2002 and 2006). At South Africa 2010 he handled four matches, including the quarter-final encounter between the Netherlands and Brazil.

Since making his international refereeing debut in 2004, Nishimura has been assigned to numerous other finals tournaments: the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2007 (including the final between Spain and Nigeria), the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2009, the FIFA Club World Cup 2010 (including the final between TP Mazembe and Internazionale), the Olympic Football Tournament 2012 and two editions of the Asian Cup in 2007 and 2011. Modric Relishing Brazil Opener

Read Time:1 Minute, 1 Second

Croatia ace, Luka Modric, is relishing facing hosts Brazil in the opening game of the World Cup tomorrow
The Real Madrid man said: "I feel good, I'm healthy and most importantly I have had the right training.

"I got a few days of rest after winning the Champions League and the chance to mentally switch focus to the team.
"I am ready, eager and cannot wait for the first game of the World Cup."

Croatia failed to qualify for South Africa 2010 before exiting the European Championships at the group stage two years later.
However Modric, who has 75 international caps, believes his country can impress at Fifa's flagship event.

"As individuals, we have made a huge step forward and we will see in this tournament how we have progressed as a team," Modric added.

"We played very well at the European Championships two years ago but we lacked a little bit of luck.
"Then we had a lot of problems in qualifying. But I think that in this World Cup we could go far and our first goal is to get to the second round," concluded the former Tottenham playmaker.

Diego Costa Excited with Reception in Rio

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 34 Second

Brazil-born striker Diego Costa claims he has been granted a positive reception from his countrymen despite opting to represent Spain at the World Cup.

Although he made two friendly appearances for his homeland in 2013, Costa chose last October to represent his adopted country Spain, where he has played most of his career.

That sparked fears that he would come under fire from his compatriots when returning to Brazil to play for Spain at the World Cup.
But the 25-year-old Atletico Madrid forward, widely tipped to be on the brink of a move to Chelsea, claims his reception could not have been better.

"Many people in Brazil understand what went on. Things are going well for me," he said.

"They have treated me well, just the way I hoped. I have the support of a lot of people who know what happened."
Costa was called up by Brazil coach Luis Felipe Scolari for a pair of friendlies against Italy and Russia in March 2013.
Despite that, the Royal Spanish Football Federation made an application to FIFA in September to call up Costa to Vicente Del Bosque's team after the striker was granted Spanish citizenship.

A month later Costa announced his decision to play for Spain, claiming Del Bosque showed greater desire than Scolari to win him over to his side, earning a rebuke from Scolari who accused him of "turning his back on the dream of millions."

Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) Judicial Director, Carlos Eugenio Lopes, went much further, demanding that Costa be stripped of his Brazilian citizenship and claiming that CBF Chairman, Jose Maria Marin, had deemed him "persona non grata".
Costa did acknowledge that the warm greetings he has received might not continue once he lines up with Spain inside a stadium but he said he was "calm".

"My parents are delighted that I'm in Brazil, close to them," he added.
"They support my decision. People are treating me in a special way, I'm very comfortable.
"For me, this is a great moment and I have to be thankful for that."

Costa also dismissed any notion that he is still being hampered by a hamstring injury that limited him to little more than a fleeting role in his club's final two crucial matches of the season – the league title deciding encounter with Barcelona and the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

He played 74 minutes of Spain's 2-0 win over El Salvador in Washington on Saturday to show that he was back to match fitness.
"I needed the match against El Salvador. Before I felt good but then broke down. Now I'm in top form and I have no problem with regards the first match," he said.

Spain open their Group B campaign against the team they beat in the 2010 World Cup final the Netherlands in Salvador on Friday before further matches against Chile and Australia.

Pele Backs Rooney to Shine

Read Time:53 Second

Pele has backed Wayne Rooney to star for England at the World Cup.
Rooney has scored 39 goals for England, but he has never found the net at a World Cup despite featuring in South Africa and Germany.

The England striker struggled for fitness and form prior to the squad's training camp in Miami, but Pele expects the 28-year-old to perform well in Brazil.

"Wayne Rooney has not scored (in a World Cup finals) but he was fantastic for the team," the three-time World Cup winner said.
"He was always the player who fought more for the team – I would like him in my team, you know!"

England start their campaign against Italy in Manaus on Saturday before taking on Uruguay and Costa Rica.
It is a tough group, but Pele believes England should qualify.

"England have a difficult group but I think they could pass," the Brazilian said.
"The World Cup is a very short tournament and the experienced players always do well."

Friendlies Not Enough to Judge Eagles

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 42 Second

As the Super Eagles jet into Brazil today from the United States of America where they played a 0-0 with Greece and lost the other game 2-1 to USA, the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) has urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the team.

Eagles had earlier in the first warm-up game played 2-2 with Scotland at Fulham’s Craven Cottage ground in London.
However, after the loss to USA, football fans in the country began to question Coach Stephen Keshi’s choice of players for the Mundial in Brazil.

The Coordinator of TAN, Orji Okoronkwo, insisted yesterday that friendly games were meant to prepare the team for the Mundial and expressed optimism that Eagles would blend into a solid squad before its first game next Monday.
Instead of condemning the team, Orji urged Nigerians to rally round Keshi and his players.

“While we agree at TAN that friendly matches are played to test the team’s ability, the players also need to be careful to avoid injuries so as not to be ruled out of the World Cup.

“What we need to do at this point is to rally round the Eagles and give them our total support, which will be crucial to their success in Brazil,” Okoronkwo added.

He also lamented the loss of Elderson Echiejile to injury and called on other players to give their best at the competition.
“It is sad that we have lost one of our top players, but I am sure that Keshi will find a suitable replacement before they play their first game against Iran.”

Okoronkwo noted that Eagles victory at the 2013 African Cup of Nations Cup showed that the Nigerian team has what it takes to do well at the World Cup.

He stated the TAN ‘Fly Me to Brazil Promo, which produced 12 winners, was a way of leaning support to the Eagles and assured that the winners would leave for Brazil on Saturday.
