Okagbare remains Nigeria’s fastest woman

The 2014 All Nigeria/Cross River Champion-ships took off on a bright note yesterday, with Blessing Okagbare extending her reign over the women 100m. It is the fifth consecutive year she is winning the title.

She finished 11.06 seconds to dust off the field on the newly installed tracks of the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar. Okagbare’s time is the sixth fastest time on the IAAF world list this season, it is the fastest time in Africa. Her Ivorian rival, Murielle Ahouré has also done the same time and both women will likely clash at the African championships in Morocco later in August.

Okagbare was chased to the finish by hard fighting Gloria Asumnu who finished 11. 17 seconds, it was her season’s best. Justina Sule was third with 11.63 seconds. Deborah Odeyemi was fourth with 11.63 seconds, Goodness Thomas fifth with 11.65, while Dominique Duncan making her debut in the championships was sixth with 11.66.

The men’s final will be decided today as the championships continue.
