Nigeria: Jonathan to reward Eagles for World Cup ticket

Read Time:1 Minute, 28 Second

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan will reward the Super Eagles when they qualify for next year’s World Cup in Brazil, officials said.

Nigeria will face Ethiopia in a first leg World Cup playoff on Sunday and officials said they are confident the African champions will prevail over the Walya Antelopes to reach Brazil 2014 and be received by Mr President. Director general of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Gbenga Elebeleye informed MTNFootball.com that “a Presidential package” has been planned for the Eagles on qualification.

”We have a special package for the Eagles once they qualify for the World Cup. It’s a Presidential package. And we are already preparing for the package because we know the Eagles will qualify,” stated Gbenga Elegbeleye.

President Jonathan has already approved 200 fans to cheer the team in Addis Ababa on Sunday.

In February, the President rewarded the team will hefty cash gifts, plots of land and national honours after they won a third Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

In the meantime, Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi arrived the Eagles training camp in Abuja Tuesday morning, while Ogenyi Onazi, Spain-based Nosa Igiebor and Efe Ambrose from Scottish club Celtic are expected shortly.

Ideye: Teamwork key to win

Striker Brown Ideye says team work is crucial if the Super Eagles want to get a win in Ethiopia.

“Our target in Ethiopia is a clear win,” Ideyetold KickOffNigeria.com. “But we must play as a team. I’m expecting that we will continue to work together and support each other.

“Supporting each other as a team is what we have always done, and as long as we keep doing that, we will win.”

Why Ethiopia will be dangerous – Kingsley Onye

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 23 Second

Kingsley Onye is worried about the reports that he has been reading from Nigeria on the last  2014 World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia.

Generally, Nigerians have been celebrating the draw. They have written off Ethiopia, going by their comments in the media. Onye, who was battered in a match violence in Ethiopia in 1984 reacted this way from his base in London:

“The reactions that I  read daily from Nigeria on the World Cup draw scare me. I’m even more worried now than the day the draw was made.

Nigerians are easily writing off Ethiopia. May I strongly tell Nigerians that anybody who thinks the tie with Ethiopia will be a walk-over for the Eagles should have a rethink. Nigeria will be missing the point to think that they are in Brazil already.

They are not there yet and they will not get there easily. I played against them and I know  what the effects of  weather are like there when you are playing. Your throat is dry and you burn out of energy in time. But aside that, the Ethiopians we watched in the Nations Cup are better now.

They have improved. They are hungry and determined. Money will not motivate them. What motivates them is the fact that they are playing Nigeria.

They are hungry, determined and will not be exhausted at home or in Nigeria. They can pass the ball. They can hold the ball and that could be a problem.

I want Stephen Keshi and his technical crew to disregard the comments of those who have predicted an easy ride. Ethiopia will not be easy to beat. For a team to qualify after losing three points for defaulting  means that they are strong.

We saw their resilience during the Nations Cup. We saw their passing game. What they lacked then was shooting. They are better in that area now. They play collectively and they are very hungry. That makes them dangerous. They may not be stars but they are a good team that may surprise any team including Nigeria. Let’s not allow that to happen.”

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles beat Ethiopia 3-0 in Lagos in 1984 in one of the qualifiers for the 1985 Under 20 World Cup. The return leg ended 1-1 but the Nigerians were badly battered in a violence that ensued after the match. Onye suffered a deep cut on the eyelid and collapsed after losing a lot of blood.

Reports had spread in Ethiopia that Nigerian fans three pieces of bread at them in Lagos to spite them about the hunger in their country following the months of drought. The news hurt them badly and when Nigeria visited the players were so beaten that it was a miracle that no life was lost.

Arsenal go top on English Premier League

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 48 Second

LONDON (AFP) – Arsenal went to the top of the English Premier League table after a 3-1 victory at home to Stoke on Sunday.

Victory left the Gunners two points in front of both Chelsea and Liverpool. But north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur will join them on 12 points if they win away to Cardiff later Sunday.

Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who suffered a potentially career-threatening leg injury following a poor tackle by Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross three years ago, made it seven goals in eight games when he gave Arsenal a fifth-minute lead at the Emirates Stadium with a close-range strike after Potters goalkeeper Asmir Begovic had palmed away a Mesut Ozil free-kick.

Stoke, however, were back on level terms when United States international Geoff Cameron scored his first goal for the club in the 26th minute with a controlled shot from the edge of the box after Marko Arnautovic’s volley had come back off the post.

Arsenal though were 2-1 up before half-time through centre-back Per Mertesacker’s looping header.

Bacary Sagna then scored his first goal in 19 months as Arsenal again made Stoke pay for failing to defend a set-piece when he headed home in the 72nd minute from another free-kick by £42.4 million ($66 million, 50 million euros) club record signing Ozil, the Germany international producing a sparkling display on his Gunners’ home debut.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was understandably delighted by Ozil’s performance.

“I didn’t expect to score so many headers from free-kicks against Stoke, but the delivery is very important and the deliveries were good today,” the Frenchman told Sky Sports.

“Like the team he (Ozil) gave a lot on Wednesday night (in the Champions League victory away to French side Marseille), but he showed his class today (Sunday) and he worked hard as well.”

This was Arsenal’s seventh straight win in all competitions and fourth in a row in the Premier League but Wenger was still not completely satisfied.

“The confidence is there and the desire is there, and that’s a very strong base. We can score goals and create chances, today (Sunday) in the second half we lost our usual game but in the end we won,” he said.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes said his side were in the game until Sagna scored Arsenal’s third goal.

“The third goal really knocked the stuffing out of us and really made it difficult to get back on terms then,” Hughes said.

“But up to that point I thought we were always in the game and always looking to play the right way.”

Meanwhile Swansea won 2-0 away to Crystal Palace with Michu putting the Welsh club in front in just the second minute before Nathan Dyer added a second goal shortly after half-time.

Sunday’s other Premier League match is the Manchester derby at Eastlands, the first such fixture for both Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini and Manchester United counterpart David Moyes.

It will be the first Manchester derby not involving Alex Ferguson, who retired as manager of reigning English champions United at the end of last season, for 27 years.

Pittsburgh Pirates on verge (finally) of MLB playoffs

0 0
Read Time:8 Minute, 3 Second
PITTSBURGH — Hope Raines is such a huge fan of the resurgent Pittsburgh Pirates that she's willing to risk her well-being to attend a game.

Diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, Raines says she skipped her scheduled chemotherapy so she and her longtime boyfriend Jim Sawyers could catch the Pirates in their overdue pursuit of the playoffs.

"I'm going to beat cancer and we are going all the way," she says, then turns to Sawyers to give him, and the team, an ultimatum: "You and the Pirates need to put a ring on it."

The Pirates haven't handed out any championship rings since their last World Series win in 1979 and it's been a miserable 20 years in a row since the club even had a winning season — a record of futility for any major league sport, let alone baseball.

Finally, seemingly overnight, times have changed. Attendance is soaring. A winning season is guaranteed. And, as they head into a critical series this weekend against the Cincinnati Reds, the once-lowly Pirates are assured a playoff spot barring an epic collapse down the home stretch as the season heads to a close on Sept. 29.

"The Buccos are just killing it this year," says fan JJ Cardinale who, along with her friend Melissa Spynda, has attended 20 games this season dressed as pierogies, a staple of the many Polish-Americans in the Pittsburgh area. Cardinale and Spynda have already purchased playoff tickets, though the Pirates probably need several wins to lock down a wild-card berth or upend first-place St. Louis for the division championship.

The growing enthusiasm for the Pirates is most evident at the box office. Once one of the worst draws in baseball, the Pirates have sold out a record 20 games this year and have the second-highest attendance since PNC Park — widely considered the most picturesque field in the major leagues — opened in 2001. Over the last few months, attendance has averaged 32,576 fans a game, according to Pirates officials. In previous years, when the Pirates were well out of the playoff race, 10,000 or less often showed up for a September game.

For decades that kind of passion for Pittsburgh sports was the strict domain of the Steelers, and to a lesser degree, the Penguins hockey team.

Since the Pirates' last World Series, the Steelers have added two more Super Bowl championships to their record six and the Penguins have hoisted the Stanley Cup three times. Typically when the Steelers start training in July, and always by September, the Pirates have become an afterthought.

Not this year. The Steelers started the NFL season 0-2 and the Penguins came up short in the NHL playoffs, leading many Pittsburghers to pin their hopes on the Pirates and jump on a bandwagon that seemingly grows larger by the day.

"I go to the grocery store and people are talking baseball," says Bob Walk, a former pitcher on the Pirate's last playoff team, now TV color analyst for the local broadcaster, ROOT-TV. "It's a little unusual for this time of year, but a whole lot of fun."

Fans at home are tuned in, too. Local TV viewership has jumped 22% vs. last year, making this season the highest rated of all time, Pirates officials say. The Pirates local TV ratings are currently third among all teams in baseball, trailing only Detroit and St. Louis.

The Pirates have developed a substantial following on Facebook as well, and not just in the city itself. Fans of the Pirates' team page have jumped 75% to 454,000 the past two years. Facebook data shows that, while most live in the Pittsburgh area, 19 of the top 50 cities for Pirates fans (roughly 38%) are outside Pennsylvania, stretching from Boston to Los Angeles. Pirates merchandise sales are up 53% from last year, based on sales made on MLB.com. That represents the fourth-biggest increase among major league teams this year.

The Pirates success this year resembles that of other cash-strapped small-market teams such as the Oakland A's, which more than a decade ago wrote the playbook on remaining competitive despite having a fraction of the dollars to spend vs. teams such as the New York Yankeeswhich this year shelled out $228.8 million on player salaries — almost $150 million more than the Pirates' payroll.

The growing support for Pirates baseball isn't going unnoticed in the clubhouse. Second baseman Neil Walker, a Pittsburgh native who grew up on "Buccos" baseball, says the renewed interest is a big boost for a club hoping to add their own chapter to a storied franchise that dominated the sporting landscape here for decades until the Steelers rose to prominence.

"I remember the great players I looked up to," says Walker, who has formed a particularly close relationship with his predecessor at second base, Bill Mazeroski, a Hall of Famer who hit the ninth-inning home run that defeated the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, perhaps the most dramatic play in Series history. "This community lives and dies for its teams," Walker says.

The Pirates last saw the playoffs in 1992 when they lost a heartbreaking pennant race against the Atlanta Braves. It's a memory that still stings fans old enough to remember watching Braves first baseman Sid Bream — a former Pirate — slide home to win game seven and crush Pittsburghers' World Series dreams.

"My first baseball memory is of Sid Bream," says Dan Dunmire, 25, who like many fans is optimistic that the post-season drought is about to end.

On a recent night at PNC Park, Dunmire and his motley crew showed their exuberance by dressing up like Pirates of old, wearing tri-quarter hats, sashes and eye patches. Most of his fellow buccaneers are too young to recall the 1992 loss and have grown up knowing only losing baseball — watching a steady stream of stars such as Barry Bonds, Aramis Ramirez and Jason Bay move to bigger markets for a fatter paycheck.

"It's nice to see baseball coming back to Pittsburgh," says fellow mutineer Ben Lesko, 20.

The lore of Pirates teams of old looms large at PNC Park, where black-and-white photos of past stars line the hallways just outside the clubhouse. Older fans hold dear the memories of Roberto Clemente, the first Latin player to win a World Series MVP in 1971. Clemente died in a plane crash just a few months after getting his 3,000th career hit while bringing relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. One of the last to see him alive was former major league pitcher Tom Walker, Neil's father.

The last Pirates team to win the series was anchored by Willie Stargell, affectionately known as "Pops" and featured pitching greats Doc Ellis and reliever Kent Tekulve, who now co-anchors the team's televised pre-game and post-game shows.

Manager Clint Hurdle says all that cherished history makes the club's recent turnaround all that much sweeter. He says an older fan recently thanked him for helping him to love baseball again. "'I haven't had this feeling since I was 12 years old,' " the fan told Hurdle, who three years ago inherited a team that lost 105 games and has improved every year since. "I'm thankful for their steadfastness."

Pirate principal owner Bob Nutting says he was keenly aware of the toll that years of losing had taken on the fans. During his first few years at the helm, his management team was reviled on sports talk shows for spending too little on the roster and trading away players for prospects.

"We recognized that when we stepped in, it wasn't going to be easy," Nutting says. The Pirates completely overhauled their minor league farm system and built a new baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, which has already produced star-in-the-making left fielder Starling Marte. They also have paid their draft picks more than any club in the league. Strong-armed pitcher Gerrit Cole, the first pick in the 2010 draft, is a fireballer with a 9-7 record this year.

The new philosophy focusing on homegrown talent, coupled with a focus on strong pitching and a defense that focuses on batter-specific fielding, has paid dividends, though a recent batting slump resulted in a string of losses this week before the Pirates trounced the mediocre San Diego Padres 10-1 on Thursday.

Admittedly nervous fans such as John Vazquez say they are keeping the faith.

"It's been 20 years (since the Pirates made the playoffs) so you've got to be optimistic," says Vazquez, owner of the downtown shop "You're in Steeler Country," though most of his stock these days is in Pirates t-shirts, hats and stickers.

"It's almost impossible that they don't make it (to the playoffs)," he says, adding just a glimmer of uncertainly. "Still, anything can happen."

Ikechukwu Ibenegbu has promised to dedicate his win to his newly-born child

Read Time:1 Minute, 24 Second

Heartland attacking midfielder, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu has promised to dedicate his side’s anticipated win against 3SC to his newly-born child, Chimamanda.
Ikechukwu Ibenegbu

The baby girl was delivered on Friday.

The Naze Millionaires will host struggling 3SC in today’s Glo Premier League Matchday 32 duel at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

Ibenegbu said though his side are sympathetic to the plight of the Oluyole Warriors he insisted 3SC will not get any reprieve as his teammates owe him an emphatic victory to dedicate to his bundle of joy.

“3SC are like a wounded lion fighting for survival but they won’t get it in Owerri. We won the first fixture in Ibadan and will surely pick another win in Owerri.

“We need the three points more than them as we’re positioning ourselves to grab a continental ticket.

“Continental ticket is still achievable with seven matches to end the season. We only need to win our available four home matches and strive for points in the three away games.

“More so I’ve already pleaded with my colleagues to win the match for me as I intend to dedicate the victory to my newly-born baby girl named Chimamanda.

“First baby girl is considered a blessing from God, I’ll be stepping out on the pitch for the first time as a father. I believe my baby will give me luck in the game,” said the Heartland playmaker to supersport.com.

Heartland are on eighth position on 44 points from a possible 93 while their opponents are rooted at the bottom on 38 points.

FIFA racism query: Keshi should be able to defend himself – Onigbinde

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 45 Second

Respected Nigeria football aficionado,Chief Adegboyega Onigbinde is hopeful that the outcome of FIFA’s query to Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi over alleged racial slur on Belgian-born coach Tom Saintfeit, will not affect the fortunes of the team in the 2014 World Cup qualification play-offs.

In the heat of the mind games ahead of the group qualifier between Nigeria and Malawi, Keshi was reported to have called Saintfeit a “white dude” adding also that Saintfeit who was an interim coach for the Flames of Malawi should go back to his country. Saintfeit, a well traveled coach in Africa reported the matter to the world soccer governing body.

FIFA which has always frowned at any form of racial comments, gave Keshi two weeks to explain himself and if he is found wanting, he might get the stick for his utterances. “Keshi knows what led him to make such statements if at all he did. But I believe that he should be able to defend himself,” said Onigbinde, a FIFA instructor.

He admitted that it was worrisome that this drama is coming when the Eagles are facing the last hurdle of their qualification to the 2014 World Cup. “We can only wish that the outcome will not throw the team off its stride in view of the matches ahead. FIFA does not usually take into cognisance any approaching game before taking decisions on disciplinary matters. “All what we can do now, is to hope that Keshi puts up a strong defence and escape sanctions.”

Nigeria Football Federation technical committee chairman, Chris Green confirmed that Keshi got an official query from FIFA before the match against Malawi in Calabar. “We are all putting our thoughts together and will give Keshi an opportunity to defend himself within the deadline given by Fifa.“The federation is confident that coach Stephen Keshi is not a racist and what transpired between both coaches has been blown out of proportion. We are very optimistic that everything will be sorted out amicably,” Green stressed.

Eagles make World Cup playoffs top seeds

0 0
Read Time:57 Second
Nigeria are one of the five top seeds for next week’s draw for the final World Cup playoffs after they ranked in the top five African teams still in the competition.

The African champions are ranked fourth best team in Africa in the latest FIFA Rankings released yesterday by the world football governing body.
They have recorded 707 points and dropped to 36th place on the global ranking.
Cote d’Ivoire remain the top African team as they are the 18th best team in the world, while Ghana are second as they are rated 24th in the world.
Mali are fifth best African team as they are 38th, but unfortunately they did not qualify for the final playoffs.
Following the disqualification of 44th ranked Cape Verde for using an ineligible player against Tunisia in their final qualifier, Tunisia, who are 46th, are thus the fifth and last top seed as they are ranked higher than the likes of Cameroon and Burkina Faso in the world.
The second pot for Monday’s draw will therefore be Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia and Senegal.

Enyimba, Wolves gear up for Fed Cup final

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second
Sunday’s Federation Cup final between Enyimba of Aba and Warri Wolves is historic for both Nigerian Premier League clubs.
For Enyimba, who are the country’s most successful side in Africa, having won the flagship CAF Champions League title twice, the final of Nigeria’s oldest soccer competition holding at the Teslim Balogun offers them the chance to win the prized title for the third time,

Their previous wins were in 2005 and 2009 and were  final losers in 2010, when they were beaten 3-2 on penalties by Kaduna United  and again in 2011 , when they lost 1-0 to eastern rivals Heartland.
But  their chances of winning their third title has suffered a setback because some of their key forwards are cup-tied. It was gathered that Bishop Onyeudo, Daniel Etor, Emeka Nwanna and Victor Ezeji will miss the match because they have played this year’s competition for other teams.
However, Enyimba could still pick Ifeanyi Edeh, Chimezie Amanfor and Sibi Gwar in attack against  Wolves  For Wolves, this finale is their first since they were formed. With strong financial support of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Wolves go into the match determined to repay the Governor with a win, which would cap a remarkable year for the club, also in the running for the Premier League title.
Their Malian import, Adama Coulibaly, is also on the verge of sealing his place in the history boks if Wolves win the game.
Coulibaly, who joined Wolves in 2009, will be the only foreigner on parade on Sunday and said that he was looking forward to merging champions with the Warri-based outfit
” I’m looking forward to the final against Enyimba and hope that we will emerge victorious”, Coulibaly said.
