Tinubu’s Strategic Outburst, Buhari’s Undoing

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 7 Second

The media space was awash with the video clips of the vituperation of one of the frontline presidential aspirants of APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu pooh-poohing President Buhari.

Tinubu who was in Ogun State continued his consultation with party leaders and delegates to seek their support at the National Convention of the party in Abuja.

While speaking in his native Yoruba language, the former National Leader of APC who was visibly angry recalled how he had helped enthrone Buhari as President after three failed attempts at the polls. He further told a bewildered audience that the President was seen weeping on National Television.

While some persons particularly the leadership of the APC at the centre and some leaders of the party of the Northern extraction took a swipe at Tinubu for his unguarded, demeaning statements, some others who are close associates of the Lagos strongman rose in his defence.

Although Tinubu is said to have recanted his widely publicized statement, it is surprising that the President’s aides have not uttered a word in response.

The crux of my article is the undertone of the venomous attack, even if it is laced with some truth. Tinubu did not unconsciously fire the shot. It was a well-calculated onslaught against Buhari. His reason stems from Buhari’s statement when he met with the Progressive Governors of APC, over the search for the party’s flag bearer for the presidential ticket. Buhari had sought “reciprocity” from the governors whom he said had earlier chosen their successors and in some cases, obtained the party’s ticket for a second tenure. The signal was clear that Buhari was poised to influence the choice of who flies the party’s flag.

This position did not go down well with Tinubu’s camp which believes that the President may not favour their principal. The bottled-up anger forced Tinubu to unleash his hidden thoughts of how he is expecting payback from Buhari for ensuring he fulfilled his ambition to become the Nigerian President after several attempts. It was a subtle force majeure to stop Buhari from going against an existing ‘ ‘contract’ albeit without a binding document.

Buhari who had indicated a few months back that he has his candidate who would become his successor seemed to have backtracked after Tinubu’s outburst. There were insinuations before this time that the former military Head of State would endorse one of these three: Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Emeka Nwajiuba and Ogbonnaya Onu. Amaechi seemed to have been mostly favoured considering his exceptional courage in helping Buhari win the ticket of the party in 2014 when Abubakar Atiku and Rabiu Kwakwanso were both tipped and supported by Tinubu. Amaechi it was thought would have been Buhari’s running mate but the President asked Tinubu to choose the Vice President, to curtail the fallout from the primaries where Tinubu felt crushed by Amaechi who had not long joined the party from a faction of the ruling PDP, known as the nPDP.

It was no wonder Buhari sustained his winning streaks by maintaining Amaechi as the Director-General of his campaign, back to back. Amaechi since being appointed as Transportation Minister has not only proved his mettle as an experienced administrator but has further given the government a face and the party, reasons to campaign for the next election.

Ogbonnaya Onu and Emeka Nwajiuba may not have any visible significant contributions toward the actualization of the APC manifesto but they have been close allies of Buhari. They form part of his kitchen cabinet having followed him from his political sojourn through APP to ANPP to CPC and APC.

It is not in doubt that the battle would have been between an older Tinubu and a younger Amaechi.

The strategy to withhold Buhari’s endorsement of his own choice seems to have favoured the Tinubu group as the President has asked the party and the aspirants to continue the search for a consensus candidate or at least trim down the list of aspirants to three.

While some believe that Amaechi would emerge through a consensus arrangement largely influenced by the President, and Tinubu would succeed at a delegate election due to the number of Governors supporting his ambition, the President still has a constitutional and moral burden to ensure that he contributes to the success of a candidate of his choice if he has run a check on all of them based on the state of the nation.

It is not likely that any one of them would have a perfect rating but there are essential parameters that any candidate beyond just being favoured to win, must possess.

Whatever the dynamics that play out, the simple truth is that Buhari has to prove his ‘blackmailers’ wrong or go down in history as one who succumbed to the antics of his mockers.

2023: Eze Congratulates Rivers APC for Successful Conduct of her Delegate Congress

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 49 Second

…Pleads with Abe to Stop Using the Name of Tinubu to Endanger the Lives of Rivers Youths

.. Commends Security Agencies for Securing the APC Secretariat from Abe’s misguided miscreants

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People’s Democratic Party (nPDP), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has commended the hitch-free delegate congress of the Rivers State Chapter of the APC held across the 319 wards of the state, to choose those who will represent the teeming members of the party as delegates to the primary elections for the various elective public offices ahead of the 2023 elections.

In a statement made available to media houses in Port Harcourt, the Party Chief described the success of the exercise across the wards as exhibiting the commitment of the party towards doing everything within human endeavour and the province of the law to win the 2023 elections in the state and liberate the state and her people from the shackles of poverty and want to be bequeathed in her by the current Wike/PDP administration in Rivers State.

Similarly, Eze described the violence perpetrated at the state party secretariat in Port Harcourt by hoodlums and dogs of vandals contracted by former Rivers Southeast Senator, Mr. Magnus Ngei Abe, as depicting the latter’s avowal to truncate every progressive effort to strengthen eternal democracy and rule of law within the party and plunge her deeper into the dirty waters of political combats.

“It is sad and equally unfortunate that Senator Magnus Abe is towing the path of self-destructing same line of action he took during the 2019 elections that stopped Rivers State APC from participating in the 2019 general elections just to achieve his sinister agenda of frustrating APC from her path to the Brick House and pave way for the opposition in 2023”

Recall that while responsible party men and women were dutifully engaged with activities connected to the delegate congress on Wednesday, Abe and his enchanted group of conscienceless political thugs, protested to the party office to disrupt activities and cause mayhem in a bid to paint the picture of political instability in the party and further taint the public image of the Nigerian Presidential aspirant Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

“Mobilizing PDP members to disrupt the ongoing APC Congress and creating the type of scene created in 2019 just to continue your devious plots of tarnishing the image of your benefactor and Leader of APC in the region, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, is most unfortunate.”

Eze counselled Senator Abe to stop his all-time shenanigan ploy and play his game as a matured politician, noting that his planned scheme against the Rivers APC will hit the rock and that will definitely ruin, and further his political career.

The party stalwart said falsely going about with the name of Senator Ahmed Tinubu, the APC National Leader as the brain behind his nefarious engagements in Rivers State is not acceptable as Ahmed Tinubu, cannot stoop so low to partake in the style of politics of Sen. Abe which over the years has centred on destroying the State chapter of a party he worked with others to build.

One would have loved to see Abe mobilize his so-called members to the various Wards of the State where the Congress to elect delegates were holding, instead, he ordered them to head to the party office and attack everyone and everything within sight, but thanks to the Security Agencies who arrested the situation and stopped the attempted vandalization of the party as was the case in the former party office.

Eze called on the public to trash the false narrative of the incidence circulated by media urchins that “the party members were singing solidarity songs and displaying placards to express their grievances when some security men at the APC secretariat began shooting live bullets into the air to scare the protesters.”

“If those youths mobilized meant any good, how come they came with the sophisticated Video machines to cover their macabre dance and started using different Social Media outlets to present their pre-empted goal?” Eze queried.

Dismissing the falsehood that one of the violent protesters was shot dead, Eze said the Rivers Police Commissioner has presented an account of what transpired and in their report, no one was shot.

If anyone was actually killed as has been insinuated by some Media Organizations through a trending video clip, it is the duty of the police and other accessors to assess the situation and inform the public accordingly, and that is exactly what the police have done.

The party Chief said the entire scenario was a makeshift African Magic or Z-World induced drama, else the police in their investigation would have stated otherwise and the relatives of the allegedly deceased would have spoken out by now.

Eze pointed to Abe and his fellow Collaborators in his macabre dance that 2019 will not be 2023 as Rivers people are set to elect Pastor Tonye Cole as the next Governor of Rivers State regardless of the dubious plots he has schemed with his usual partners, Gov Nyesom Wike and the PDP.

He pleaded with the media to be guided by the truth that there is no faction of APC in Rivers State. “We have just one APC structure headed by Chief Emeka Beke as any claim of any faction by anyone or group is not only dubious but unlawful.

Eze congratulates the State APC and her teeming supporters across the state for organising a successful Congress and wish the party the best in all her electoral outings ahead of the 2023 elections.

Kano Is Swing State, ‘Il Swing Votes When Time Comes – Ganduje

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 45 Second

The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, says the State is poised to swing the delegate votes to produce the next flag bearer of the “All Progressives Congress (APC), assuring APC presidential hopeful Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of possible victory.

Governor Ganduje said this on Wednesday in Kano during a visit by Amaechi to canvass delegate votes in the state.

Ganduje had earlier praised the candidate by extolling his qualities as an achiever and a very reliable friend of Kano. Ganduje mentioned the Lagos-Ibadan-Abuja-kaduna-kano, Kano-Daura-Maradi and Kano-Dutse railway projects as projects initiated by Ameichi that had endeared him to the people of Kano. He added that the people of Kano now call the former Minister Mr Railway.

The governor said the people of Kano are aware of the contributions of the former minister of transportation to the state, especially in the construction of Dala Inland Dryport and Lagos-Kano railway, as well as the support he gave to ensure victory for APC and President Muhammadu Buhari.

“When you say l told your friend that he will be a good loser, now you can understand l was fighting for you. We know how you built the biggest railway in Africa in Kano, we know the Dala Dryport and how it will enhance the economy of Kano. I came to your office, and we got approval, we got the certificate, and you also gave the approval to divert the railway to the Dryport.

There is no doubt Kano is a swing state, let’s continue to pray. Kano will swing the vote when the time comes. We know when you came here but were stopped from flying, and you drove back to Abuja at night. We know how you suffered, but as l told you, a swing state will swing when the time comes,” Ganduje said.

Earlier, in his speech, R. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi had thanked the Governor for the warm reception he and his entourage received on their arrival in Kano. He told the delegates to vote for as he is the most qualified amongst all the contestants.

Amaechi pleaded with Ganduje not to share the state delegate votes, but to deliver all to him.

Amaechi reiterated that neither Vice President Yemi Osinbajo nor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu possesses the job experiences he garnered as a former two-term speaker, two-term governors, chairman of speaker’s forum twice, chairman of governor’s forum twice and appointment as federal cabinet minister twice.

He said it is imperative the party delegates vote according to their conscience so as not to regret it later, since there is no place for the second position in the race.

“I don’t want you to say no to me and I don’t want you to tell me what you told my governor,” the former minister had said jokingly.

He told delegates not to vote for him on sentiments, but because of his record of achievements. He further reminded Nigerians that he built and equipped more than 500 Schools as governor and provided free education in Rivers.

Not only that, but he added that he constructed a first-class dental centre in Rivers State and as a minister, he spearheaded the railway revolution in the country.

Gov Nasir El Rufai and the Toast Of Amaechi

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 50 Second

The political arena has witnessed a massive boost with key presidential aspirants of the two major parties leading their teams to different states of the country in a bid to get endorsement by revered Traditional Rulers, Governors, political leaders and delegates for the primary elections expected at the end of May 2023.

While there are assurances in some quarters, on the other hand, there are no definite commitments as delegates prefer to either wait on the promptings of the party leadership or they keep their cards close to their chests.

One common thing in all of these visits is the warm reception accorded the August visitors by the party members.

I am not going to dwell on the general perception of what each of the aspirants scored in the different places; rather, my discourse is solely on what happened in Kaduna State on two different occasions.

There are actually what we popularly refer to as swing states where two political parties have a roughly close level of support. These states often go a long way to determine the final results. I would like to borrow this term in the course of this article.

Every aspirant going into a primary election is expected to have dominance in some states, and of course, that would affect his overall success. It would be foolhardy for anyone to woo delegates where he has no stronghold. This is what makes a mockery of those who, prior to this time, have no political foothold where they aspire for offices. They are better seen as gladiators or pretenders who probably are on a mission to show relevance and seek negotiation when the deal is done. Some would have to step down even before the whistle is blown.

It is preposterous to expect that the governors or, in some cases, the ministers are not in control of the decisions of the delegates who will choose the candidates for their respective parties.

For a state with a sitting governor, over seventy-five per cent of the votes will go in the direction of the governor. This is the kind of politics former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, talked about. “Our democracy is different from the Western world.” No matter how funny it sounds, it is an incontrovertible truth! We are still evolving, even after twenty-four years of uninterrupted democracy.

The Governor of Kaduna State caused a major stir in the media after the visit of a frontline presidential aspirant, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. People like me almost had a heart attack when I watched the video and read the reports in major newspapers where El Rufai supervised the party delegates of APC, who threw their total support for Tinubu. That was supposed to be one of the strongholds of another strong contender to the top position, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. The reason is not farfetched for keen political watchers. El Rufai and Amaechi have, over time, become entangled like siamese twins. Since their paths crossed, they have become bonded by politics in that even their differences are resolved without much drama in the public space.

It was, therefore, rather startling to see Tinubu win over the support of the delegates. My phones never stopped ringing as callers wanted an explanation of what was going on.

I didn’t have the slightest inkling into what had transpired. The only possible thing was to look deeper into the speech. It was clear that the host governor was being respectful to the visitor and his team, which was expected, considering that they all are of the same political party and would definitely need the support of all to ensure victory in the general election.

I read between the lines of the speech of El Rufai. He practically pushed the decision to the waiting delegates, who, to me, would not want to lose whatever was meant for them.

I have contested a keen primary election, and so I understand very well how things work between delegates and aspirants.  It is more of buying and selling. In fact, you spend more in places where you are not sure of support. That probably happened during that visit. It may also not be. But it most likely was, talking from an informed, experiential knowledge.

The governor was smart to exempt himself from the decision of the delegates.

Just less than a week after, the APC in Kaduna State played host to Amaechi. It was a defining moment for the former Governor and Transportation Minister. Many like me waited to hear from the governor who has been tipped as a possible running mate to Amaechi, although recent events tried to change this narrative. El Rufai had recently revealed that he was no longer interested in public office and would not be running with his friend, except President Buhari says otherwise. That probably convinced some other aspirants that Kaduna was ripe for the taking. But, it was likely a political statement aimed at diverting attention.

I listened carefully again and listened to El Rufai make his speech. It was emotion-laden. There was no reason for him to have thrown his weight behind another aspirant aside from Amaechi. Let me reproduce it for the sake of those who neither read nor watched it.

“Let me tell you my history of Gov. Amaechi. In 2011, we were to hold the CPC National Convention, but we didn’t have money to pay for Eagle Square. Gov. Amaechi, as a PDP sitting governor, then heard about it. He has always been an admirer of Gen. Buhari. He sent a message for us to explain the issue, and he helped us. Since then, I have maintained contact with him on the orders of Gen. Buhari himself.

“When we started discussing with the Chief PDP serving governors that wanted to defect to APC, we had meetings with Gov. Amaechi and Gov. Nyako of Adamawa State, until we got a reasonable number for our party.

He is the game changer. Amaechi is from Rivers State, South-South, where the then incumbent President Jonathan is from.

He sacrificed and moved to our party. That’s part of the reason President Buhari loves the Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, till tomorrow.”

“When the federal government wanted to use SSS to arrest opposition, I told him not to worry. I will go there myself. He left his job as a state governor, came to Abuja, drove me in his car to SSS headquarters, and stayed there until he took me back home.

Till tomorrow, my wife never forgets. Amaechi is her favourite Nigerian.

I want you all to understand that APC is one family. This primary is about contests. Let us all consider the virtues of everyone.”

This is what I consider a “toast” from an abiding friend. Some expected a clear-cut statement where he would have announced the support of Kaduna APC for Amaechi. If he did not act like his Kano State counterpart, Gov Ganduje, when Gov Wike of PDP strode into unfamiliar ground, it’s obvious he wasn’t going to play politics of bitterness when Tinubu visited.

The content of his toast during Amaechi’s visit is the seal on how not to betray a benefactor. In these times when men have become reprobates, relishing the toxic venoms of failed relationships, El Rufai has shown that there are still friends with a conscience.

Assuming without conceding that both of them have a severed relationship, as some persons wanted us to believe, El Rufai did not go the way of some others who were major beneficiaries of Amaechi’s magnanimity but have chosen to sing and dance naked at the market place.

Since Mallam Nasir El Rufai sang his own version of Mary’s “The Magnificat,” I have been inundated with thoughts of how wicked the soul of men has become. In spite of whatever differences, we should all imbibe this character of a friend who could not shy away from speaking the truth when the occasion arises.  That could be the speech that would get the kind of delegates for the elections to change their decision overnight.

Rivers APC Applauds Amaechi on His Conferment of Chieftaincy Title

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 31 Second

Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC has described
the unprecedented and monumental gathering of the Traditional Rulers,
Political leaders, sons and daughters of Ikwerre extraction in Rivers
State on 13th January 2018 at Isiokpo, the Traditional Headquarters of
the Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality to honour one of their most illustrious
sons, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi the erstwhile Governor of
Rivers State and the incumbent Minister of Transportation as
historical, epochal and monumental.

This great event organised by the Ikwerre Youth Movement (IYM) the
foremost socio-cultural organisation in Ikwerre land was to solemnize
the Chieftaincy title earlier conferred on Chief Amaechi by the
Ikwerre Traditional Rulers abiding by all the traditional rites of the
ancient Ikwerre heritage as “EZE OCHI ALIRI 1 of IKWERRE Land” which
means the person who stands tall to take on and ward off any challenge
in a family or Community. Briefly, he is the “Redeemer of His people”
(Ikwerre) or “The wise Defender of the Ikwerre kingdom”

The event unprecedented in recent time in the annals of social and
political gathering in Rivers State commenced with 21 traditional gun
shots to welcome Amaechi and over a million of persons from Ikwerre
the largest ethnic group in Rivers State with friends and supporters
to accord honour to this great son of Nigeria and to thank President
Muhammadu Buhari for the honour done to their son and Leader of Rivers
State politics.

The Organisers through the President General of Ikwerre Youths
Movement (IYM) and one of the greatest grass-root Mobilisers from
Rivers State, Hon. Azubuike Chikere Wanjoku expressed their profound
gratitude to President Buhari for assisting their son to demonstrate
to the entire world the stuff he is made up with as a great leader in
the mould of Zik Awo, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Sir Ahmadu Bello.
in short Amaechi is our own Zik, Awo, Balawa and Saraduna combined
the party highlighted.

The party in a press statement circulated on Monday by Chief Eze
Chukwuemeka Eze the SSA Media and Public Affairs Consultant to the APC
Rivers State Chairman, Dr Ibiamu Davies Ikanya further described Chief
Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi the Eze Ochi Aliri 1 of Ikwerre land as a
breaker of records stating that the Holy Bible as reflected in the
gospel of Mark 6:4, “A prophet is honoured everywhere except in his
own hometown and among his relatives and his own family” (New Living
Translation) but Amaechi with the event of today have dusted this
truism with the millions of Ikwerre sons and daughters his brethren
agreeing as one people to honour him for his sterling and outstanding
inputs towards the emancipation of the Ikwerre people and for becoming
a great Iroko and one of the pillars through which the politics of
Nigeria currently rotates.

With this title and recognition Amaechi becomes the most influential
Ikwerre man on planet earth.

The party further stated that Chief Amaechi stands out as the only
Nigerian that was a Speaker of a State House of Assembly for eight
years, Chairman of the Speakers’ Forum of Nigeria, Governor of Rivers
State for eight years and two term Chairman of the Nigeria Governors
Forum and most historically led an opposition political party to
unseat a sitting President in Nigeria.

The party explained that, today, Chief Amaechi is not only changing
the face of Transportation in Nigeria as the Minister of
Transportation but stands out as one of the key and influential member
of President Buhari’ s political Team.

Refers in some quarters as the Lion of Niger Delta Politics, this
great son of Rivers State has being reappointed to lead APC to victory
come 2019 as the Director General of the Presidential Campaign
Council. No son of Rivers State has achieved such feats to warrant his
ethnic tribe to have so honoured him in this manner.

Not minding that the incumbent Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom
Ezebunwo Wike is of the Ikwerre extraction but the Ikwerre people in
the event pleaded with the Eze Ochi Aliri 1 of Ikwerre to “please,
introduce the APC candidate for the 2019 gubernatorial election and
2019 shall be a walk over as Wike has proved what it means not to be a
Governor”.

Overwhelmed with the mammoth crowd that attended the event coupled
with the resolution by the Ikwerre people to honour Amaechi and to
elect an APC candidate by 2019, Governor Wike was so irked to a
boiling point that he immediately ordered the sack of three of the
caretaker Committee Chairmen of Ikwerre extraction for not scuttling
the reception. The unfortunate sacked Chairmen that earned the wrath
of Gov. Wike were that of Obio-Akpor, Port Harcourt and Ikwerre. The
Emouha Chairman was spared the sack hammer as he made attempt to
scuttle the event but his attempt could not make any impact as the
reception was held without any hitch. It is based on this development
that the party blasted Gov Wike for this childish move of sacking
these men forgotten that 75% of those in his cabinet were all
Amaechi’s product including himself as sacking them will not save him
from the woes that await him come 2019.

Without mincing words, the party highlighted that Ikwerre ethnic group
comprising of Port Harcourt and three other Local Government Areas of
the State is the largest ethnic group in Rivers State and most
importantly one of the major deciding factors on who becomes the River
State Governor come 2019.

To the Ikwerre Youth Movement, “Amaechi is our liberator. He is the
man who broke the shackles of political timidity and wrenched the
chains of economic naivety in our domain. This colossus of a man
brought political freedom to our very doorsteps and we will henceforth
stand by him in all his political calculations.

The elated and excited Amaechi who expressed his appreciation
reiterated, “If anybody on earth says I have sat with him at any
meeting to plan how to kill someone, that person should step forward.
I swear before God and those of you here, 90% of those who benefitted
from Scholarships under me, I never knew them. President Muhammadu
Buhari will ensure that the 2019 elections will be free and fair. I
urge all our people to register and obtain their Voters’ Cards to
enable them to exercise their franchise as the 2019 elections,
especially the governorship, are our last battle. If we win, we will
take over Rivers State. If we lose in the election, we will go home
and rest. We will not impose any candidate. Anybody who will go for
any position, like chairmanship, should go for primaries. Anybody who
wins will be the party’s candidate. The President said that there
would be no rigging during the 2019 elections. It is to our advantage.
As Ikwerre people, we must give out the power to other ethnic
nationalities. But we will be in a position to take it back at any
time. Your future is in your hands.”

The party expressed their unflinching gratitude to all Rivers State
people that attended the event including the amiable State Chairman,
Chief Dr Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, Senator Andrew Uchendu, Dr Dakuku
Peterside the Director General of NIMASA and gubernatorial candidate
of the party in 2015 with his running mate, Hon. Honourable Asita.
Chief Victor Giadom, Engr. Ngerebara Sampson, Lauretta Onochie, SA to
President Muhammadu Buhari, Hon Leyii Kwanee former Deputy Speaker of
Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Fred Mbombo Igwe, Hon. Tolofari
George former Commissioner for Transport in Rivers State, the hard
working Party Secretary , Chief Emeka Bekee, AkpoBari Celestine one
of the best brains from Ogoni, Chief Oby Ndukwe and countless other
leaders that witnessed the event.
