Nigerian weddings and their outrageous costs

Read Time:54 Second

It’s beginning to seem like couples are going out of their way to outdo one another on the marriage front. Wonder what the competition is all about when we all know fingers are not equal.

Everyone wants a wedding ceremony that would become the talk of the town, but how many of your town’s people will contribute to sorting out your debts after the actual ceremony?

Research has discovered that an average wedding in Nigeria now costs up to two million naira. Shocking isn’t it? This is the cost for an average wedding. Imagine the overhead costs for a real society wedding. Bet that got you thinking. How many couples can actually afford to spend 2m on a one day event?

They seem to forget that life goes on after these wedding ceremonies and end up struggling to survive and pay debts. It could take as long as 2 years for most of them to recuperate. So once again, is it really worth it? Think about that before you go off planning your own weddings.

‘President unleashed thugs on Lagos residents,’ APC alleges

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 40 Second

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of unleashing thugs on residents of Lagos State.

The opposition party made reference to a March 16 rally during which pro-Jonathan youths and members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC)  demanded the resignation of Attahiru Jega, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The APC expressed its sentiments via a statement released on Tuesday, March 17, by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed.

The statement reads:

“They said we are raising false alarm. But just as we had alerted Nigerians, the Jonathan Administration’s sponsored protest took place, with dire consequences for residents.”

“However, the President’s chances in the forthcoming elections suffered a collateral damage as the nine-billion-Naira-powered protest backfired, with even supporters of the President being forced to have a rethink due to the massive scale of the lawlessness and brigandage that took place during a supposedly peaceful protest.”

The APC also alleged that President Jonathan is also planning to sponsor protests against its National Leader, Bola Tinubu.

“During the forthcoming demonstrations, the protesters have been told to carry placards asking the EFCC to probe the allegations made against Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the deceitful, ill-intentioned and irresponsible ‘documentary’ that was sponsored by the same Jonathan Administration. Such is the level of President Jonathan’s desperation for re-election that a man who is not on the ballot in the forthcoming elections has become a target of unprecedented mudslinging by his (President’s) Administration.”

“It is a cruel irony that a President who swore to an oath to make the security and welfare of Nigerians his priority has been the same one orchestrating reprehensible acts of violence in the polity, to the detriment of the well-being and safety of his compatriots, just because of re-election desperation.”

”Because they (protesters) were pro-Jonathan, hordes of policemen who could not prevent a deadly robbery, in which three policemen lost their lives in Lagos a few days back, offered massive protection to the OPC members who brandished guns, machetes, clubs and knives openly as terrified Lagos residents scampered for safety.”

”It is noteworthy that the policemen who protected the OPC members during their protest did not stop them from destroying APC posters and other campaign materials, neither did they prevent them from unleashing mayhem on the people. As far as the increasingly-partisan security agents were concerned, everything done in support of President Jonathan is fair.”

“We are therefore alerting all Nigerians as well as the international community to note that President Jonathan himself is the one setting the stage for violence before, during and after the forthcoming polls, despite his tiring platitude that his political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian. From this precarious situation to which the Administration and the PDP have pushed Nigeria, it is but a short cut to Laurent Gbagbo’s post-election Ivory Coast.”

The opposition party also accused Jonathan of taking his desperation for re-election to new heights.

‘APC is my final bus stop,’ Former Vice President says

0 0
Read Time:48 Second

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has denied reports that he is planning to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Rumours went rife that Atiku was planning to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after President Goodluck Jonathan paid him a secret visit.

The reports were further bolstered by the defection of 120 supports groups loyal to him from the APC to the PDP.

Atiku has however said, via a statement on Twitter, that the APC is his final bus stop.

“When I toured our country and listened to the hopes, fears and expectations of Nigerians from all walks of life, I said the APC is the final bus stop, and that it is the end of the line. Because it is for me,” the former Vice President said.

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Rufai Ahmed Alkali stated earlier that Atiku is merely on sabbatical in the APC and would soon return to the PDP.

5 important things Emir of Kano said during CNN interview [VIDEO]

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

The Cable News Network (CNN) recently had an interview with the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

During the interview, which aired on Wednesday, March 18, the former Central Bank Governor spoke to Christiane Amanpour on Boko Haram and the missing $20 billion oil funds.

Here are five important things he said during the interview:

My position in the Central Bank was that there was always this gap of $20bn after reconciliation between what the NNPC exported and what it deposited into the Federation Account.   I raised a number of issues that I think have not yet been discussed and addressed sufficiently.

“It could be $20bn at the end of the day. After reconciliation it could amount to $14(bn) or $12(bn) and I think these issues reflect unconstitutional and illegal withholding of revenues from the Federation Account.

The petroleum sector is a major drain on the resources of the country and this has to be looked at.”

If I had a way of knowing that if Boko Haram took my life, they would stop killing people in Nigeria, I would give my life. I have nothing else to aspire to, I have achieved.

The idea of Boko Haram or anyone aligning themselves with ISIS is frightening partly because these are groups that represent a lunatic fringe in Islam and who are very ruthless.

Mother of 2 murders landlady in Ogun

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 41 Second

It was a sad sight to behold as residents of Mowe, a satelite town in Obafemi Owode local government area of Ogun State, woke up to the shock that a 33-year-old mother of two identified as Shakirat, had pounced on her landlady, Saidat Ishola, and strangled the woman to death, before absconding.

It was gathered that the landlady was sleeing in her apartment when Shakirat sneaked into the room and held her by the throat and snuffed life out of the old woman.

Neighbours report that Ishola and Shakirat had a little disagreement on Saturday morning over electricity bill and disconnection, with the tenant complaining that her apartment had been cut off from the power supply, while other tenants were enjoying light.

One of the landlady's sons, Samson Ishola,  recounted the circumstances that led to his mother's murder.

"The woman, (Shakirat), fought with my mum and tore her clothes. She complained that the power supply to her apartment was disconnected. Some elders in the area settled the matter for them.

My mother and Shakirat went back to their different apartments. Unfortunately, we were told later in the evening that Shakirat went back to my mother’s apartment where she was sleeping and strangled her to death.

I had left home very early in the morning to my workshop. It was in my workshop that someone told me to go back home that my mother and one of our tenants were fighting her.

When the suspect was strangling my mum, my uncle’s pregnant wife who was in the bedroom relaxing heard the scream of my mother.

She ran into the apartment and tried to assist my mother, but the suspect overpowered her. Immediately the suspect killed my mum, she ran away without taking anything from her room."

Policemen from Mowe Police Station deposited the victim’s body at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital while the hunt for the killer has been intensified.
