Barely few weeks after the jubilation that greeted the commencement of international flights at the newly upgraded Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made its first arrest and cocaine seizure. The suspect, Chizoba Anselem Nwabuwa 32 year-old 400 Levels Fine and Applied Arts student was apprehended during the inward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian flight from Brazil enroute Addis-Ababa. He was found to have ingested liquid cocaine packed inside male condoms.

The head of the NDLEA at the Enugu Airport, Mr Nsikak-Abasi Udoh who confirmed the arrest said that the suspect excreted 25 wraps of a liquid that tested positive for cocaine. “The suspect excreted twenty-five (25) wraps of liquid substance. When tested with the United Nations drug testing kit, it tested positive for cocaine weighing 1.250kg. This first arrest and seizure is exciting to us because we just commenced operations” Nsikak-Abasi stated.

According to the suspect, “I am a 400 level student of Fine & Applied Arts at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State. I wanted to use the half a million naira (N500,000) they promised to pay me in developing my Art Gallery. They assured me in Brazil that authorities will not be able to detect liquid cocaine, so I was confident. Unfortunately, things have turned-out the other way. I regret my involvement in drug trafficking”. Chizoba who is single hails from Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA Ahmadu Giade expressed satisfaction with the arrest. In his words, “the Agency accords high priority attention to all the airports. We shall continue to up-scale our operations at the airports and prevent drug trafficking syndicates from using the nation’s airports”.

Giade urged members of the public to pursue legitimate businesses at all times noting that a good name is far better than ill-gotten wealth.

The suspect will soon be charged to court.

Catholic Priests May Be Allowed To Marry Amid Papal Changes

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 42 Second

The Vatican has opened its door to the possibility of married priests, a move that would go against centuries-old Church tradition.

Archbishop Pietro Parolin, who will be No.2 in the Roman Catholic Church when be becomes secretary of state next month, declared that the priestly vow of celibacy derived from an age-old rule, but was not Catholic dogma.

"It's not a dogma of the Church and it can be discussed because it's an ecclesiastical tradition," Archbishop Parolin told El Universal newspaper in Venezuela, where he is completing his term as Papal Nuncio.

"It is a great challenge for the Pope because he has a mission to unite and all these decisions must be taken in a way that unites the Church, rather than dividing it," he said. "At that point, you can talk and reflect and go deeper into these issues that are not defined by faith and think about some changes, but always in the service of unity and as the will of God. It's not what I want [that matters] but to be faithful to what God wants for his Church."

Archbishop Parolin's comments come at a time of upheaval in the Church, which has been beset by scandals over sex abuse by priests, following the resignation of Benedict XVI and the election of the Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as Pope Francis.

Francis has made waves by calling for a "poor Church for the poor". He has said he wants to boost the role of women in the Church, although he has noted that Pope John Paul II ruled out the ordination of women.

He has also taken a more tolerant stance on homosexuality, declaring: "Who am I to judge?"

Yesterday, he reached out to nonbelievers in an unprecedented letter to Italy's leading left-wing paper La Repubblica to answer a columnist who declared that he did not believe in God. The leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics told Eugenio Scalfari, the newspaper's co-founder and former editor, that non-believers did not commit a sin as long as they followed their consciences.

"The question for people who do not believe in God is to listen to their consciences. Also for those without faith, sin is going against your conscience. Listening to it and obeying it means making up one's mind about what is good and evil."

The Catholic insistence on the celibacy of priests dates back to the first centuries of the Church. The first Church law mandating celibacy was Canon 33, enacted at the Synod of Elvira, now the Spanish city of Granada, around 305-306 AD. The discipline was definitively reaffirmed at the Council of Trent in the mid-16th century.

The Orthodox Church and some Eastern Catholic churches, however, allow married priests.

Francis, in an interview in 2012 before becoming Pope, said: "For the moment, I am in favour of maintaining celibacy, with all its pros and cons … It is a matter of discipline, not of faith. It can change. Personally, it never crossed my mind to marry.

Nigeria: The Days of Abacha Are Here Again With Us – Breakaway PDP

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 27 Second

It started like a joke. After the State Governors elected their leader, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, in a vote of 19 to 16, defeating Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau State to retain his position as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), PDP under Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and their collaborators in government preferred the defeated candidate. They improved on this when they engineered five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to attempt to impeach the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dan Amaechree, in a House of 32 members with the intention of reconvening few hours later to impeach the Governor. If not for the swift intervention of the National Assembly, they might have succeeded in achieving their devilish aim without minding the consequences.

These enemies of democracy did not stop there; they organised and stoned visiting Northern Governors on a solidarity visit to their Rivers State counterpart, not minding the consequences.

Not yet satisfied, these enemies of democracy had the guts to remove the names of Governor Murtala Nyako and that of one of the founders of PDP, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, from the delegates list of Adamawa State for their failed Special National Convention. Haba! What type of politics is this? And these people still want us at our ages to keep quiet and allow them to shave our heads while we do nothing! God forbid!!

Against the spirit of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that clearly stipulates freedom of association for Nigerians – even the freedom of factionalisation of a political party as stated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), our people are being hounded in various states of the Federation. In flagrant and outright breach of the Constitution and abuse of the rule of law, today our National Secretariat remains sealed by the Police. To add insult to our injury, our Rivers State Secretariat just opened for business has also been sealed by the Police, who claim to be acting on orders from above. What is more, the Police also last night barred Gov. Amaechi and his guests (about 120 mainly former Speakers in the country) from entering the Governor’s Residence through the private gate of the state Government House, Port Harcourt. And we still claim that we are in a democratic society! Surely, even the days of Abacha were not like this!

Indeed, General Sani Abacha must be lamenting in his grave that Nigerians wrongly abused him considering the high degree of impunities being encouraged in a democratic set up, with the Police being used as a tool to haunt political opponents.

We are however consoled that while the G34 that gave birth to PDP was born during the dark days of Abacha, today a new PDP is being given birth to and is determined to legally and constitutionally fight these impunities being perpetrated by false democrats in our country.

 a

The removal of our candidates from the Federal Executive Council (FEC)

No matter the flimsy excuses being given by the Federal Government over the sack of nine of our candidates from the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the truth of the matter is that these innocent Ministers were sacked because they were either nominated by us or sympathetic to our cause.

We are aware that these Ministers had been under surveillance and denied the necessary tools to work with – in short; they were programmed to fail immediately they were indentified with us. Sadly, these innocent Ministers have been sacked while the most corrupt Ministers whose atrocious activities are well known to Nigerians are retained. The most pitiable case of these sacked Ministers is that of our mother, the Minister of Housing, Ms Amal Pepple, whose crime was approaching Mr. President to plead with him, even kneeling down to beg him to forgive Gov. Amaechi for whatever sins he is assumed to have committed against him.

We wish to assure these victimised Ministers that their travails are temporary. They have nothing to be ashamed of; their fate is in the hands of God and their future is very bright. Therefore, rather than being sad, they should count themselves lucky for being part of the struggle to salvage our party and country from the hands of opportunists who are using a political party which they do not know how it was formed to torment and haunt the founders of the party and their supporters.

We urge former Heads of State, Religious Leaders, Our Royal Fathers, Civil Society Activists and all men of goodwill to intervene before these misguided elements plunge this Nation into anarchy. This Country belongs to all of us and we can no longer sit and watch an over ambitious cabal intoxicated by power brazenly inflict needless pain on us on a daily basis.

We urge our supporters to continue to exercise patience and avoid the temptation to meet force with force so as not to play into the hands of our enemies. We also urge all Nigerians to intensify prayers for God to touch the hearts of our leaders so that these dark days of General Abacha during which people are haunted for expressing their views may be cut short

Long live PDP!
Long live Nigeria!!!

Nigeria: Jonathans secret Plot against Tukur

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 6 Second

The battle of wits in d Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which culminated to the polarization of the Party during its Special Convention at the Eagle Square in Abuja may take a new turn going by revelations made to AGOGO NEWS by a source close to the Deputy National Chairman of the Party, Prince Uche Secondus.

Despite efforts by the New PDP led by Alhaji Kawu Baraje to sack the factional Chairman of the old PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, informed sources say the President may not be in a hurry to drop Tukur now until towards the next National Convention of the Party. Tukur who is battling to regain control of the Party machinery is said to be unaware of plans by his deputy to succeed him in a manner similar to the treatment meted on his predecessor, Okwy Nwodo.

The recent revelation by the Kawu Baraje led faction which exposed Tukur's election as an illegality is one of the trump cards which the President may use to drop him thus finally paving way for Secondus to emerge. Prince Secondus who belongs to the faction against Gov. Rotimi Amaechi in Rivers state is said to have warmed his way into the heart of Mr President during the crisis that eventually saw the fall of former Gov. Timi Sylva from contention for his re-election bid as governor of Bayelsa State.

It was gathered that when the battle to stop Sylva was on, Amaechi used his position alongside other governors from the South South zone to protest in favour of their embattled colleague. Several efforts were made by the President to convince the governors on why Sylva must not return to office but that was resisted by the powerful Governors' Forum, NGF,led by Amaechi. Though, the NGF's stance was in the spirit of solidarity but all that did not go down well with the President who had suffered a lot of sponsored media attacks from Sylva's aides.

Then Secondus became a willing tool for the job. He quickly turned against Sylva though he was alleged to have received a lot of financial support from. The slimy politician from Rivers State saw a window of opportunity in the President's desperation to stop Sylva and then capitalized on it to gain a firm grip of the President alongside other members of the NWC of the Party.

That of cause did not go down well with Amaechi and his colleagues who vowed to ensure that Secondus and his colleagues did not return to the NWC. The Rivers governor was said to have personally told his once close associate, Uche Secondus during the build up to the May 2012 Convention where the new Party exco was elected, that he would let him return to the NWC but was rather disposed towards giving him any other position he wanted. That of course did not go down well with Secondus who waited for his turn to strike.

AGOGO NEWS confirmed that the battle to hijack the PDP structure from Amaechi in Rivers State was actually masterminded by Secondus, a close ally of the ousted State Chairman, Chief G.U. Ake. He was alleged to have hidden Ake's form while asking Felix Obuah, the factional Chairman to fill a form even when Obuah was not in contention for the position.

Secondus thus aligned forces with Nyesom Wike, the Minister for State, Education who has been the arrow head of the battle against Amaechi.

With Secondus' performance and conviction of Mr. President that he could deliver, he was then promised a return to the NWC where he would be later positioned to edge out Bamanga Tukur, being a fellow kinsman of Jonathan.

Tukur who is now battling for survival is ssid to be unaware of the plot by the President to axe him being from the North in order to ensure that the Party's ticket is delivered to him. The presence of Secondus and Anenih both from the South South would guarantee the President a smooth sail to power.

In all, Bamanga may be used and dumped after he has already worked against the emergence of a Northern President. His plans to en throne his son, Awwal, may then be used to compensate him or his spoiler role against his kinsmen.

It is not certain what would be the fate of Tukur in the long run as the battle rages in the PDP. Will he decide now to join the fray of the Northern leaders who have thrown their weight behind the new group led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Kawu Baraje? Or will Tukur be disgraced out of office like Nwodo and Ogbulafor who were both sacrificed on the altar of political expediency? Time will tell.

New Jersey teen gets 17 years in prison for killing girl

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 41 Second
WOODBURY, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey teenager called his actions "a big mistake" as he was sentenced Thursday to 17 years in state prison for fatally strangling a 12-year-old girl whom he had lured to his home with an offer to trade bicycle parts.

Justin Robinson, now 16, pleaded guilty last month to aggravated manslaughter in a deal with prosecutors who were facing some major challenges in the case, including a lack of physical evidence to determine whether he or his brother Dante Robinson killed Autumn Pasquale in October 2012.

Robinson, who looked mostly straight ahead during the two-hour sentencing hearing, must serve more than 14 years before he is eligible for parole.

"I'm sorry. I never meant for this to happen," he told Judge Walter Marshall. "This was all a big mistake."

Relatives of the girl did not see it that way, and some wanted the judge to issue a tougher sentence than the one agreed to in a plea agreement. If the judge had done so, though, the plea could have been invalidated.

"I believe the defendant deserves more than 17 years," said the girl's father, Anthony Pasquale, who as a mail carrier had delivered letters to Robinson's family in Clayton, where the families of the victim and her killer had deep roots. "I believe his fate should be nothing but death."

When he pleaded guilty, Justin Robinson said he acted alone. During a sentencing proceeding, neither he, his lawyers, nor prosecutors shed light on a motive for the killing, or even what happened beyond what was already known: Pasquale went to his house several blocks from hers after receiving a Facebook offer to trade bike parts on Oct. 20. When she didn't return home that night, her family, then the entire community, set off in a frantic search. Two days later, her body was found in a recycling bin behind the home next to Robinson's.

A break in the case for investigators came when the boy's mother, Anita Saunders, called police after seeing something troubling in a Facebook post from one of her sons. Speaking briefly during the sentencing, Saunders told the judge that media accounts of what happened were incorrect. "Nobody knows exactly what happened the day of the accident," she said.

Robinson's lawyer, Jean Faulkner, told the judge that the boy had post-traumatic stress disorder from being physically abused as a young boy and seeing his father strangle his mother more than once. "This is a learned behavior," Faulkner said.

Autumn's family described her for the judge as a loving tomboy who wore mismatched socks and loved to ride her BMX bike.

They talked about how her disappearance and death touched the town, located 25 miles southeast of Philadelphia. Her old soccer team, once known as the Clayton Comets, is now Autumn's Angels; her jersey number, 14, has been retired from the Clayton Middle School sports teams; a bike path and a park are now named for her.

And they told the judge how members of the family, including her siblings and young cousins, are in therapy and dealing with nightmares about her death.

"When I see the blue recycling bins out, I cry to think Autumn's innocent life was so easily discarded like a piece of trash," said the girl's maternal grandmother, Mary Pasquale, who had taught Justin Robinson in school.

Prosecutors agreed to allow Robinson to plea to aggravated manslaughter rather murder because of challenges with the case. Because of his age and a developmental disability, it was not a sure thing that he would be moved to adult court. If he had been convicted of murder in juvenile court, he could have had a chance of parole in less than seven years.

They also have said that there was no evidence besides his confession that made it clear that it was he and not his brother who killed the girl.

Dante Robinson, who was 17 when he was arrested last October, is still charged with murder in family court. Authorities have not said when they may drop those charges.

Amaechi protests as police block Govt House road

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 37 Second

The frosty relationship between the police and the government of Rivers State degenerated yesterday, with some officers blocking a major road that leads to the Government House.

Governor Rotimi Amaechi and a group of former Speakers were returning to the Government House after a tour of projects when they found the road barricaded with police vans.

The policemen claimed to be acting on the instruction of Commissioner of Police Mbu Joseph Mbu, who has been at loggerheads with Amaechi.

The convoy of about seven vehicles, including two buses in which the governor and the former speakers rode, was stuck for close to 25 minutes, The Nation learnt.

Several efforts were made to persuade the police to allow the vehicles pass through. They refused to.

One of the policemen got angry, saying he would not be challenged by civilians, it was learnt.

Three police vans were parked across the road and all residents of the Old GRA street could not drive in or out of the area.

The governor, who was dressed in a white shirt and a pair of white trousers and shoes, walked up to the spot where the three vans were parked across the road. He said: “You can see for yourself that we cannot go to the Government House through this road on the instruction of the President and the Commissioner of Police.”

Eventually, the convoy took another route to get into the Government House.

Earlier yesterday, Amaechi had received President Goodluck Jonathan at the International Airport and planned to meet with him later in the day.

The President was visiting nearby Bayelsa State.

There were 102 former Speakers in the convoy. Among them was former Lagos Speaker Olorunnibe Mamora, who was shocked by the police action.

Mamora said: “It is quite unfortunate; it is an act of impunity and overzealousness on the part of the police.”

The barricaded road leads to Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, which doubles as the General Hospital.

The police denied blocking the Government House’s entrance.

Spokesperson Angela Agabe, a DSP, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt: “I am aware that the commissioner of police did not give such an order to block the entrance leading to the governor’s residence.

“He did not do it and did not instruct our officers to do such a thing.’’

But, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, insisted that Amaechi and no fewer than 70 visitors were denied access to his private residence in the Government House.

“The governor was coming back with his visitors, former speakers of Houses of Assembly; he was blocked on his way into the Government House, leading to his private entrance.

“The police blocked the road, the governor came down and identified himself, but they told him they had orders from the commissioner of police.

“Governor Amaechi, therefore, had to go through a longer route to get to the Government House,’’ Semenitari said.

Semenitari described the action of the police as illegal, unconstitutional, and an insult to the office of the governor.

Kalu Wants Cameroun for Eagles

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 37 Second

Former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu is fervently praying for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun to be paired with the Super Eagles in the decisive Brazil 2014 play-offs.

"Bring on Cameroun it’s time for pound of flesh. These new Eagles are giant killers. They have what it takes to nail teams that tormented Nigeria in the past. And if there is one foe that must be vanquished for good,I pick Cameroun," observed Kalu who was in charge as Abia governor when Enyimba ended Nigeria's Champions League jinx.

Three times the Indomitable Lions won the Nations Cup ahead of Nigeria but the  ex-governor does not quite agree with that.

"Yes, they won in 1984 but in 1988,Mauritanian referee Idrissa Sarr dashed them the cup when  he dubiously cancelled Henry Nwosu's goal and gifted Roger Milla a penalty kick. Then in 2000, the Tunisian referee punished Nigeria for beating his country in the first round,” Kalu added.

He explained that Cameroun's dominance began with the Stephen Keshi era and must now come to an end with Keshi as chief coach.

"In the days of Christian Chukwu and Segun Odegbami Camerounians worshipped us. Shooting Stars won the 1976 Winners Cup in Yaounde. Rangers repeated the feat in 1977. Milla for Tonnere Kalara and the trio of Thomas Nkono, Paul Akono and Jean Manga Oungene of Canon Sportif could do nothing, " Kalu pointed out.

"The captain Keshi of 1984,the Big Boss of 1988 and Assistant coach of 2000,is a far cry from today's 'killer' Keshi. And these new Eagles feel our pains. While we mourned Sam Okwaraji in 1989, Cameroun sent Nigeria out of the Italia'90 qualifiers. I pray the God of soccer sends them our way now so that we laugh best," Kalu summed up

Eagles make World Cup playoffs top seeds

0 0
Read Time:57 Second
Nigeria are one of the five top seeds for next week’s draw for the final World Cup playoffs after they ranked in the top five African teams still in the competition.

The African champions are ranked fourth best team in Africa in the latest FIFA Rankings released yesterday by the world football governing body.
They have recorded 707 points and dropped to 36th place on the global ranking.
Cote d’Ivoire remain the top African team as they are the 18th best team in the world, while Ghana are second as they are rated 24th in the world.
Mali are fifth best African team as they are 38th, but unfortunately they did not qualify for the final playoffs.
Following the disqualification of 44th ranked Cape Verde for using an ineligible player against Tunisia in their final qualifier, Tunisia, who are 46th, are thus the fifth and last top seed as they are ranked higher than the likes of Cameroon and Burkina Faso in the world.
The second pot for Monday’s draw will therefore be Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia and Senegal.

Enyimba, Wolves gear up for Fed Cup final

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second
Sunday’s Federation Cup final between Enyimba of Aba and Warri Wolves is historic for both Nigerian Premier League clubs.
For Enyimba, who are the country’s most successful side in Africa, having won the flagship CAF Champions League title twice, the final of Nigeria’s oldest soccer competition holding at the Teslim Balogun offers them the chance to win the prized title for the third time,

Their previous wins were in 2005 and 2009 and were  final losers in 2010, when they were beaten 3-2 on penalties by Kaduna United  and again in 2011 , when they lost 1-0 to eastern rivals Heartland.
But  their chances of winning their third title has suffered a setback because some of their key forwards are cup-tied. It was gathered that Bishop Onyeudo, Daniel Etor, Emeka Nwanna and Victor Ezeji will miss the match because they have played this year’s competition for other teams.
However, Enyimba could still pick Ifeanyi Edeh, Chimezie Amanfor and Sibi Gwar in attack against  Wolves  For Wolves, this finale is their first since they were formed. With strong financial support of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Wolves go into the match determined to repay the Governor with a win, which would cap a remarkable year for the club, also in the running for the Premier League title.
Their Malian import, Adama Coulibaly, is also on the verge of sealing his place in the history boks if Wolves win the game.
Coulibaly, who joined Wolves in 2009, will be the only foreigner on parade on Sunday and said that he was looking forward to merging champions with the Warri-based outfit
” I’m looking forward to the final against Enyimba and hope that we will emerge victorious”, Coulibaly said.
