Olukoya’s anointing oil, holy water, prayer points disappoint MFM pastor; cries out as blindness looms

Pastor Lawrence Okechukwu Amuruche, a 61-year-old father of two, has cried out for help after the anointing oil, water and prayer points given him by the General Overseer of his church, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Dr. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya failed to stop the cataract growing in his eyes.
Amuruche, who pastors the Alakija, Satelite town branch of the MFM, said for over a year, he has been battling with eye cataract which has already grown on one eye and threatening to start growing on the second eye if medical help does not come fast.
Narrating his ordeal when he visited The OKEJETNEWS head office in Lagos, Pastor Amuruche said the problem started when he noticed his eyes were always itching him, a which development degenerated into blurry sight later. According to him: “I noticed my eyes always scratch me and at a point my vision changed, my sight became blurring. I told my wife about it, she looked into my eyes and told me there was a growth forming in my eyes. So, we sought medical advice.”
The optician they visited, for medical advice, informed him that he had developed an eye cataract and that the only way it can be treated is surgery. “I went to an optician in the estate where I live who told me that it is cataract and that the only way out is surgery. Initially, I didn’t know what the problem was because I have not experienced it before and it is not in my lineage. So, we went to Eye Foundation Hospital, Ikeja, for treatment.”

“At the hospital”, Pastor Amuruche continues, “they said I should provide N450,000 per eye. That is N900,000 for the two eyes but I cannot afford it. I did an eye test for which I paid N130,000 pending the time I will get money for the surgery. But I have not been able to raise money and my situation is getting worse by the day.”

In his quest to seek alternative treatment for his eyes at no cost, Pastor Amuruche embarked on a journey to Isiukwuato LGA, Abia State, when he heard that a group of opticians flew in from the United States to help people with eye problems free-of-charge.Unfortunately, his effort to get cured was frustrated by the mammoth crowd that besieged the venue. “I spent five days there but I could not do the surgery because the crowd was much. That is how I have been going around for assistance and now it is moving to the other eye”, he stated.

Asked if the church has done anything to assist him, he looked up from the documents he was sorting with a torchlight, under a well lit room and thick lens glasses on his eyes, and said: “I have gone to my General Overseer for money to do the surgery. To get him was a problem. It was just last week that I was able to get him. But instead of giving me money to do the surgery, he gave anointing oil, prayer points and water to be washing my face. I told him that I have prayed. I have been doing fasting and have been doing vigils concerning the eyes. But it has been deteriorating. If my coming out to seek for help will lead to my sack, let him sack me and I will go instead of losing my eyes in the name of ministry. And I will not be able to minister, I will not pastor and I will be in the house and they will not pay me.”

Read Time:1 Minute, 42 Second

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have prevented a 35-year-old refrigerator dealer, Alinnor Celestine from smuggling 1.1kg of substances that tested positive for cocaine to Germany. The suspect who ingested sixty wraps of narcotics was caught at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos with the help of scanning machine during the outward screening of Turkish Airline passengers.

NDLEA commander at the airport, Mr. Hamza Umar said that the suspect was to deliver the drugs in Frankfurt, Germany. According to Hamza, “the suspect who tested positive for drug ingestion was to deliver the cocaine at Frankfurt. While under observation, he excreted 60 wraps of white powdery substances that tested positive for cocaine weighing 1.1kg”.

In his statement, the suspect said that he was only looking for what will sustain his family. “My name is Alinnor Celestine from Imo State. I attended Community High School Aba, Imo State and could not further my education due to lack of money. I am married with three children and sell refrigerator parts in Lagos. My goods got lost on transit and I am yet to recover financially. I was looking for assistance when I was introduced to drug smuggling. It was my last resort to sustain my family. They assured me that I will not be caught and also promised to pay me the sum of 3,000 Euros. Everything is like a dream to me now” he stated regretfully.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade called on members of the public to shun drug trafficking and report drug cases to the nearest NDLEA office. “I call on members of the public to always shun drug trafficking and report suspected drug dealers to the Agency. Let us unite in promoting peace and development in our country. I am pleased with the arrest and our officers will remain vigilant to arrest anyone with narcotics at our airports” Giade stated.

The suspect will soon be charged to court.

Agony Of 10-Year-Old Victim Of Kaduna Blast: I Went To Buy Shoes for Sallah, But The Bomb Went Off And Destroyed My Leg

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 48 Second

A few days before Wednesday’s Kaduna bomb explosion, 10-year-old Abubakar Usman was full of hope and joy. He was excited that he would be wearing a new pair of shoes on the forthcoming Sallah day.
That joy has since been terminated, as a bomb hit him and cut his leg.
Usman told Daily Sun on his hospital bed at 44 Army Reference Hospital that his mother had asked him to go and meet his elder brother so that the latter would buy new shoes for him at Kawo market.
He said it was not too long that they entered the market when the bomb exploded, devastating the area and killing several people as well as injuring others.
He said he did not know how he got to the hospital, but believed that government officials must have brought him to the hospital for medical treatment.
Abubakar Usman said: “My mother said I should go and meet with my elder brother in Kawo market to buy new shoes for me for the coming Sallah celebration. As we were entering the market to buy the shoes, we heard of the bomb explosion. Then all of a sudden, one of my legs started bringing out plenty blood, and I now realised that it was the bomb blast that hit me. I fell on the ground, and I did not know who brought me to the hospital. I don’t even know where my brother is now.

“My father is working with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and my mother is at home. My mother came to the hospital with all my brothers to see me. I am now looking forward to the Sallah celebration despite what happened to me.”
Also, another survivor, Abdulmumini Adamu, who is also receiving medical attention at the same hospital, said he had earlier left the venue of the Ramadan lecture at Murtala Square, and that as soon as he got to kawo, alighting from a commercial bus, the bomb blast hit him.
Adamu said he was missing the care and love of his parents as they live far away in Makarfi Local Government area, adding that he wanted them by his bedside.
According to Abdulmumini Adamu, “I was coming from tafsir (Ramadan lecture) at Murtala Square, and as soon as  I got to Kawo, the bomb blast occurred very close to where I was coming down from a commercial bus. The blast affected my hands, my legs and part of my face. I live in Kaduna with my brothers, but my parents are staying in Makarfi Local Government. I have not been able to reach them because  I don’t have a mobile telephone. I want to see them by my bedside in this hospital.”
Another victim that survived the blast, Abdulrazak Musa, also narrated his experience: “I repair both generating set and motorcycle. I went to Kawo to collect a job when the bomb explosion affected my leg and my hand. I can say that I was at the right place at the wrong time. I thank God that I am getting better. And I thank whoever brought me to the hospital because I still don’t know how I came here.”

On Your Side: Samsung cell phone fire

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 15 Second

A 13-year-old North Texas girl was awoken in the night by a smoldering cell phone on the other side of her pillow, but the cell phone manufacturer says she did something they warn users about.

Ariel Tolfree loves using her Samsung Galaxy S4.

“It's really like, nice and pretty,” said Tolfree. “It's high tech.”

Every chance she gets, she texts her friends and gets on social media apps like Instagram and Twitter.

But during FOX 4’s visit with her, she had to borrow her dad's S3 phone, because her phone is burned so badly, it's barely recognizable.

”The whole phone melted,” said her dad, Thomas. “The plastic, the glass. You can't even really tell that it was a phone.”

Tolfree says her phone slipped under her pillow as she fell asleep, and the smell of something burning woke her up in the night.

“I didn't think much of it, so I went back to sleep, and then I woke up again and it was more prominent,” said Tolfree.

Her dad suspects the phone overheated, causing the battery to swell and start a fire.

The Tolfree family had seen FOX 4’s recent series of reports on swelling baby monitor batteries, which led to a nationwide recall.

The Tolfrees contacted Samsung, and then FOX 4.

“We have a reasonable expectation that the products we buy are going to be safe,” said Thomas.

A spokesperson for Samsung says their products are safe, and pointed out that the battery inside the phone was a replacement unit and not an original Samsung part.

Nevertheless, the company does agree there is a need for consumer education when it comes to rechargeable batteries. That’s exactly why they post a warning in their user guide, which specifically states covering one of their devices with bedding or other material could restrict airflow and cause a fire.

Tolfree and her dad, though, didn’t read that warning.

“If anything, they should put a big warning on it, like a cigarette label, if that’s the case,” said Thomas.

Tolfree says she doesn’t think people should sleep with their phones and instead, should put them on a nightstand.

The Samsung spokesperson said they take any instance of a battery fire very seriously.

They have requested the burned phone be sent to them so they can fully investigate.

FOX 4 will continue to follow up.

In the meantime, the phone, the bedding, the mattress and pillow will all be replaced by Samsung.

Kano state governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has declared that the two week ultimatum is null and void.

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 9 Second

Kano state governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has declared that the two week ultimatum given to Southerners in Kano to leave the state, by a non-governmental organization, Northern Youth Development Foundation, is null and void.
“No one has the authority to sack you from this place. Kano is your home and you have come to stay”, the governor stressed.
Kwankwaso stated this when Kano state Non Indigenes Forum paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Kano on Tuesday, pointing out that his government does not support the call as it will result in acrimony, thus, not in the best interest of Nigerians.
He said the allegation that the administration of Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo state planned to take measures aimed at returning Northerners in his states to their states of origin is false as the Imo state governor, being a detribalized Nigerian with substantial investments in the North could not initiate such a policy.
“I am sure Owelle Okorocha’s investments in the North outweigh the investments by Northerners in Imo state put together. Look at even the Rochas Foundation School he built here and other investments. Such intention about driving away people from his state could not have come from him”.
“I have personally spoken to Rochas and he openly and candidly told me that the there was nothing like that and the news was the handiwork of detractors who never wish him well” Kwankwaso added.
Gov. Kwankwaso, however, called on federal government to avoid measures aimed at worsening ethnic, sectional and religious discord among Nigerians, alleging that President Jonathan is creating unnecessary political tension in the country, which is harmful to national interests.
“Tension caused by the government is probably the worst tension; we have cases where governors are worried and concerned either about their security of lives and properties or security of their jobs so also other elected officials as well as businessmen and women across the country,” he lamented.
Earlier, leader of the delegation, Dr. Jimpat Aiyelangbe said they were at the governor’s office to lodge complaint over a letter sent to them by a group of youth asking non indigenes to leave the state within two weeks.
Dr. Aiyelangbe lamented that since the letter was delivered to the, they have being having sleepless nights, noting that if government does not take appropriate action on time things could get out of hand.

Governor Obiano flags off 2nd longest road project

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 21 Second

In continuation of the mass construction of roads to infrastructural sites and agricultural belts of Anambra State and the comprehensive strategy to achieve food security and industrialisation, the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, yesterday, flagged off the reconstruction of 9.5 kilometre Eke-Awgbu – Amaetiti – Okpeze – Ndiukwuenu road, the second longest road project in the state.

The road project is part of a 13-kilometre road that stretches to Okpeze Bridge, brining to 40 -kilometres, the entire road projects that cut across many communities up to Ufuma, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking during the flag off event, Governor Obiano stated that the road was the longest road project awarded by the state government after the 47-kilometre Aguleri -Oil Rig Road project. According to Obiano, “the road is very important as it traverses many agro-based communities and would stimulate socio-economic growth when completed. It is designed with all necessary components, including bridges and culverts, drainages, street lights, markets and three modern bus stops.”

The governor assured communities around the road project axis that his administration would sustain equitable distribution of democracy dividends to all parts of the state, stressing that it was a deliberate policy of his government to open up roads into the hinterland with viable sources for wealth creation and employment for the youths. He urged the people to monitor the progress of work and preserve facilities in the area as well as ensure that security was maintained.

The Commissioner for Works, Sir Callistus Ilozumba, in his remark, said the contract had been fully mobilised and assured that government would maintain prompt payment of all certificates generated.

He commended the people of the area for removing all obstructions on the road, to pave way for drainage work. However, he warned against burning of tyres and made it clear that those who violated the directive would pay for the cost of removing the bumps.

Sir Callistus directed traditional rulers and Presidents-General of communities to arrange for proper maintenance of the roads and drainage systems to increase the lifespan of the roads.

The member representing Orumba North in the State House of Assembly, Mr. Romanus Obi, said the road would link various parts of Orumba North and thanked the governor for maintaining continuity in government. Also speaking, the Chairman of Orumba North, Mr. Okey Enekwe and his Orumba South counterpart, Mr. John Onyeakpa noted that the governor had increased the tempo of rural development through massive infrastructural development

Doctors’ Strike: Nigerians are Dying, Says Uduaghan

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 9 Second

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has described the death of Mr. Moses Solomon as one of the losses in human lives that the nation has witnessed as a result of the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

Uduaghan, who was speaking when he paid a condolence visit to the state Commissioner for Works, Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, elder brother to the deceased in Warri, said it was important for the NMA to call off the strike action while the federal government looked at the issues at stake.
The late Moses Solomon, a civil servant in the Delta State Civil Service, died at the age of 49 year.

According to the governor, the death of Solomon was a sad reminder of the number of people who are dying as a result of the NMA strike action, stressing that some of the deaths were avoidable if the doctors were on duty.

“The circumstance behind his death is part of the reasons we are appealing to my professional colleagues (you know I am a medical doctor) to suspend the strike. If doctors were not on strike, it is possible he would have been alive, because we are losing lives unnecessarily as a result of the strike,” Uduaghan said, adding: “We know there are challenges and a lot is being done to deal with them.”

Furthermore, he said: “A life that is lost cannot be recovered, so, I appeal to them (doctors) to suspend this strike while government deals with the issues because to me, this is one loss as a result of the strike action.”

He commiserated with the families of commissioner saying, “on behalf of my family and the people of Delta State, we express our condolences on the death of your younger brother.

“In life, we pray to live till old age but, it is only God that knows why your brother left at such age because, even your mother is still looking young, we cannot question God, it has happened,” he said, adding, “Mama is there, his children are there and we pray that God will give all of you the fortitude to bear the loss.”

Responding, Hon. Funkekeme Solomon thanked Governor Uduaghan for being in the vanguard for doctors to call of strike noting that private hospitals do not have enough space for the sick.

He also, thanked the governor for identifying with the family in their period of grief and pledged to continue to work for the governor to finish strong in 2015.

NIGERIA: EFCC to Clampdown on Nyako’s Commissioners

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 58 Second

Strong indications emerged yesterday that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is finalising plans to clampdown on some former commissioners who served under the impeached Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako.

THISDAY gathered that already, the EFCC was in full steam to go after former members of Nyako’s cabinet  to answer certain questions focusing on the activities of the administration.

A source within the EFCC told THISDAY  that the commission plans to quiz the commissioners “to answer some critical questions regarding the former governor’s running of the state, mostly on the issue of funds.”

When THISDAY contacted EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, on the move to clampdown on the former members of Nyako’s cabinet, he explained that “it is not in the style of EFCC to reveal its plans.”

Uwujaren went further to inform THISDAY that since the investigation was still on, more officials that served in the former governor’s government would be invited to provide clues regarding some serious allegations against Nyako and his government.

Pressed further if the EFCC would be heading to the court any time soon,  Uwujaren said: “When we get to that bridge, we will cross it, at the moment,  investigation has not been concluded.”

Meanwhile,  it is becoming clearer that the embattled former governor may have to stay longer outside the country pending when the coast is clear.

Though the EFCC  would not confirm to THISDAY about plans to track down Nyako,  sources familiar with the case informed THISDAY that with EFCC subtle declaration of Nyako as a wanted man, the former governor would have to spend more time in his place of hiding in order to stay away from the country.

It was also obvious that the commission had set in motion plans to arrest Nyako should he enter the country at anytime.

The whereabouts of the ex-governor remains hidden as prominent members of his government are being surmounted by the EFCC to give vital information on allegations of gross misconduct and other high level accusations of corruption against his government.

Some of the prominent members of the Nyako’s governor drilled by the EFCC included the former Deputy Governor and Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, among others.
