Pres. Jonathan’s Alleged Forged Doctorate Certificate Surfaces

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 4 Second

In the aftermath of a hounding of the 1961 school leaving certificate of chief opposition candidate in the Nigerian presidential elections, General Buhari, by the ruling party in Nigeria; Nigerians having finally certified the opposition candidates documents have turned their focus on the president himself.

President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria has presented himself as a “Doctor;” a PhD holder. However for several years Nigerians have without success requested for and searched for any evidence of his real qualifications and his thesis in particular. The hashtag #GEJYourThesisPlease? was recently introduced to the quest.

A certain user, Kenai on Nairaland forum did a thorough search of University of Portharcourt archives where the president allegedly obtained his degree in 1995 and only came up only with a publication of the president from 1985 on the ‘shrimps’ family.

It is important to note that his only collegiate academic publication found  was under the “college of education” where he was a lecturer and not the University of Port Harcourt, where he allegedly obtained his “Masters” or “PhD.” There was no affiliation of his name with University of Port Harcourt in the published paper.

Quizzing Conflicts found in President’s Resume

Nigeria’s president must have been uniquely capable of multi-performance.

His official resume lists him as being a lecturer at the Dept. Of Biology, Rivers State College of Education, Port Harcourt from 1983 – 1993.

But at the same time, by 1985 while he was employed as above, he “obtained” his masters degree in Hydrobiology/Fisheries Biology according to his resume.

He achieved the same feat with his PhD which’s thesis is being sought.

He was appointed as an Assistant Director in the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC), in March 1993-1998. He was deployed to the Directorate of Environmental Protection and Pollution Control where he was directing the affairs of the Environmental Protection Sub-Department.

And while functioning as Assistant Director as above, also “ran” his PhD which he claimed to have obtainedin 1995.

However no thesis for this “PhD” is in the public domain and has been found in any academic records.
INEC Cover-up Noticed

Documents purported to be the president’s Doctorate of Philosophy in Zoology stamped by INEC, the Independent Electoral Commission, had the certifying Provost signature conspicuously covered; the date covered and other parts of the certificate deliberately covered to prevent any kind of scrutiny and validation.

See:

Defense

In a recent publication that came out in CityPeople last December attempted to address these perturbing questions, Prof. Charles Bruce Powell was claimed to have been Jonathan’s “supervisor for his Master’s and PhD in Hydrobiology.” However the article was immediately proven not credible as the president does not claim to have a PhD in Hydrobiology, but one in Philosophy in Zoology. If he obtained his masters in Hydrobiology, then that is where Professor Powell supervised him.
Furthermore, unfortunately his alleged PhD supervisor, Prof. Charles Bruce Powell has passed (in 1998). Though this demise does not excuse the “missing” thesis that has not been seen published in school and global records as academic institutions do not run on individual but college and official records.

Conclusion

The question remains: is president Goodluck Jonathan really a doctor or is he guilty of grand perjury? Did he dropout or complete his PhD and defend his dissertation? Where is his thesis?

It bares saying that it is important the presidency addresses this concern among Nigerians so the people can move on to other pressing matters.

Prince Andrew denies sex abuse claims

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 44 Second

(CNN)In his first public remarks since being accused of having sex with an underage American woman, Britain Prince Andrews briefly addressed the allegation before a crowd in Davos, Switzerland.

"Firstly, I think I must, want, for the record to refer to the events that have taken place in the last three weeks. And I just wish to reiterate and to reaffirm the statements which have already been made on my behalf by Buckingham Palace," he said Thursday at the World Economic Forum.

Earlier this month, Buckingham Palace issued a statement which said, "It is emphatically denied that the Duke of York [Andrew] had any form of sexual contact or relationship" with the woman. "Any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation."

Andrew is a son of Queen Elizabeth II and a brother of Prince Charles, the next in line for the British throne.

The prince is accused of having sex with the woman when she was 17, details of which are is a sworn affidavit in Florida court dated January 19. The woman said that she and the Prince had sex "three times, including one orgy."

The court documents showed that her lawyers had sent a letter to Buckingham Palace asking to interview the prince under oath.

In her sworn affidavit, the woman described Buckingham Palace's denial that sexual contact ever took place between the pair as "false and hurtful to me."

Interview request

The woman, identified by Buckingham Palace as Virginia Roberts, first named the prince in a civil motion filed December 30 in the U.S. District Court in southern Florida in which she claims she was forced to have sex with several men. She is referred to as Jane Doe No. 3 in the legal filings.

In the letter the woman's lawyers sent to Buckingham Palace, attorneys Paul Cassell and Bradley Edwards asked to interview Prince Andrew "under oath regarding interactions that you had with Jane Doe No. 3 beginning in approximately early 2001. Jane Doe No. 3 was then 17 years old."

The letter includes a picture of the woman and Andrew which was taken around that time, they say. The lawyers also want to discuss subsequent interactions with their client in New York City later that year, the letter says.

"The interview could be conducted at a time and place of your choosing, and with your cooperation, I believe the interview could be completed in two hours or less," it says.

New court pleadings involving the relationship between Jane Doe No. 3 and the prince are being prepared, the letter adds, but their filing will be delayed if Andrew accepts the interview request by January 19.

The attorney for her legal team confirmed to CNN that Buckingham Palace had refused to accept the letter to Prince Andrew and that it was returned to them.

Buckingham Palace didn't respond Thursday when asked by CNN about the letter.

But the woman's allegations have previously been firmly rejected by Buckingham Palace.

"It is emphatically denied that the Duke of York had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Roberts. Any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation," the palace said early this month.

Statement: I just called him 'Andy'

Prince Andrew is named in the court filing in Florida as one of a number of prominent people who allegedly had sexual contact with teenage girls through self-made billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who pleaded guilty some years ago in Florida to a state charge of prostitution solicitation.

CNN was unable to reach Martin Weinberg, Epstein's attorney, on Thursday.

In her first sworn statement to the court, Jane Doe No. 3 gave more details of the alleged encounters.

"Epstein made me have sex with Prince Andrew several times," she said, according to the court document.

"I had sex with him three times, including one orgy. I knew he was a member of the British Royal Family, but I just called him 'Andy.' "

One day when she was in London, she said, Epstein told her she would be meeting a "major prince."

She continued: "Epstein told me 'to exceed' everything I had been taught. He emphasized that whatever Prince Andrew wanted, I was to make sure he got."

'Sexual interests in feet'

When the prince arrived, she was introduced, she said, and "we kissed formally, cheek to cheek." The group went for dinner and to a nightclub where she was served alcohol before returning to the townhouse. The picture referred to in the letter, of the prince with Roberts, was taken there, she said.

After the pair were left alone, she said, "We went to the bathroom and bedroom, which were just steps away from where the picture was taken. We engaged in sexual activities there. Afterwards, Andy left quickly with his security."

She said she had reported back to Epstein on the encounter next day, telling him, "It went great."

"I told Epstein about Andy's sexual interests in feet. Epstein thought it was very funny. Epstein appeared to be collecting private information about Andy," she added.

Roberts also gave details of two more alleged occasions when the pair had sex. One was in Epstein's New York mansion in spring 2001, she said, when she was 17.

The third and last occasion was at an orgy involving nine girls on Epstein's private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, her statement said.

"I was around 18 at the time. Epstein, Andy, approximately eight other young girls, and I had sex together."

The other girls, who appeared to be under 18, were "European looking and sounding" and didn't really speak English, she said. She said she "felt disgusted" after the orgy.

'Voluntarily tell the truth'

Roberts rejected the palace's denial of the allegations and said she hoped Andrew would agree to be interviewed under oath. "I did have sexual contact with him as I have described here — under oath," she said.

"Given what he knows and has seen, I was hoping that he would simply voluntarily tell the truth about everything."

Roberts and another woman are seeking to join two other women who are arguing in federal court for the U.S. government to reexamine its case involving Epstein.

The investment banker agreed to a state plea deal in 2007 and began serving an 18-month sentence in 2008, according to court documents. He pleaded guilty to solicitation of prostitution and procurement of a minor for prostitution.

The world is closer to having a real weapon to fight Ebola

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 1 Second

(CNN)The first doses of the Ebola vaccine were on a commercial flight to West Africa and were expected to arrive on Friday, according to a spokesperson from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) one of the companies that has created the vaccine with the National Institutes of Health.

Another vaccine from Merck and NewLink will also be tested.

"Shipping the vaccine today is a major achievement and shows that we remain on track with the accelerated development of our candidate Ebola vaccine," Dr. Moncef Slaoui, chairman of global vaccines at GSK said in a company release.

In December, the trial of the vaccine made by Merck and NewLink were stopped after some of the volunteers in the trial had "transient mild" joint pain. After investigating that side effect, scientists concluded it was not a big enough issue to stop the development of the vaccine. No similar side effects were noted in the GSK trial.

There are other Ebola vaccines being tested by companies in the United States and in Russia.

This first shipment will be used, along with a placebo in this first large-scale trial in the next few weeks in Liberia.

"We are expecting to start by the last week in January, but there are some details that need to be ironed out regarding the FDA," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at a press conference.

The tests should begin in the Monrovia area and will involve nearly 30,000 people. People who have had the virus and survived will be excluded from this trial, according to GSK.

The first people to get the vaccine will be health care workers who are some of the population that is most at risk for catching Ebola. That's because it can be easily transmitted through exposure to bodily fluids. In Liberia there have been 370 cases of health care workers becoming infected with Ebola, 178 of them have died according to the World Health Organization.

The number of newly infected health care workers has declined recently, as has the number of cases in general in Liberia.

In August and September of 2014 the WHO was seeing 300 new confirmed cases per week, versus the 8 new confirmed cases according to this latest incident report.

Another trial in Sierra Leone should start a few weeks after the trials get started in Liberia, according to the NIH.

Sierra Leone has had the largest number of infections of any country with 10,340 reported cases and 3,145 deaths from Ebola. The disease has slowed down according to the WHO, but still there were 117 new confirmed cases according to the latest report.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will work with Sierra Leone's government to help manage the tests.

The NIH will also soon be testing the therapeutic drug ZMapp as early as next month.

ZMapp is an experimental drug that has been used to help patients who have already been infected by the virus. The drug maker, Mapp Biopharmaceutical ran out of the drug last year, but has been making enough doses for a small human trial.

The number of new Ebola cases in Liberia has been declining, but public health leaders say that there are still "little mini outbreaks" and that "until there is a very last case, (an epidemic) is not over until it is over," Fauci said.

Since the outbreak began in December 2013, there have been 21,759 infections and 8,668 people have died from Ebola.

INDIA: Panchkula police on the lookout for drug racket kingpin

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 53 Second

As many as 50 African nationals were operating the drug racket in Panchkula, luring youngsters to the illegal trade, revealed the investigations done by the Panchkula police.

The police are now on the lookout for the kingpin, a Nigerian based in Delhi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Panchkula, Hamid Akhtar met the Delhi Joint Commissioner and other police officials in this regard.

“We sought their support to put an end to this menace. They have assured us of their full support,” said Akhtar.

The accused, hailing from Sierre Leone and Nigeria, had involved many youngsters, including girls in their twenties, in the trade, who worked on the field to avoid suspicion, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Crime, Pramod Kumar.

“In order not to reveal their place of residence, the African nationals met the youngsters in hotel rooms,” said a police official.

The youngsters were first given drugs at a party or a meeting and when they got addicted to these, they were involved in the trade, said the police.

As many as six persons, including a 20-year-old girl, an African national and four Nigerians, are in the police net for running drug racket in the town.

The police busted the gang with arrest of Sisse Malik, a native of Sierre Leone in West Africa, after he assaulted some policemen who had gone to attend to a complaint of a taxi driver outside a hotel in Sector 5. The girl, Amandeep, fled from the spot but was later arrested and the police got to know that they all were running drug trade. The police have already recovered contraband worth Rs 50 lakhs.

Many hotels on police radar

After it came to the light that youngsters were supplied the contraband in rooms booked at hotels, the police have sought details of foreign nationals who stayed at local hotels. Many renowned hotels (names being withheld by the Chandigarh Tribune) are on the police radar.

Two drug peddlers held
Two persons, not a part of the drug racket, were arrested for carrying habit-forming drugs late last night. Rinku, in his twenties, and Praveen, in his forties, were arrested for supplying drugs in Panchkula. Contraband worth Rs 50,000 was recovered from them.

Woman on 14-year hunger strike freed after court drops suicide charges

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 17 Second

New Delhi (CNN)A court in India's troubled northeastern region has freed a female activist who has been on hunger strike for 14 years in protest against special powers given to the military to combat rebels, her lawyer said Friday.

Irom Sharmila, 42, started her hunger strike in 2000 after 10 civilians were killed in a shooting blamed on the army in Manipur state.

Sharmila — also known as the "Iron lady of Manipur" — has demanded the repeal of India's Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) because it gives sweeping powers to the military to search properties, detain suspects without warrants and shoot on sight.

Since 2000, Sharmila has been arrested 14 times for trying to kill herself, prompting authorities to force feed her under a law that makes attempted suicide illegal, her counsel Khaidem Mani told CNN.

But Mani challenged the attempted suicide charge, citing the country's history of hunger strikes. Mahatma Gandhi used the same mode of protest during the nation's independence struggle, he told the sessions court in Imphal East, a district of Manipur.

"I also argued that a hunger strike was no crime," he said.

The magistrate ruled there was insufficient evidence to prove she was attempting to commit suicide. In doing so, he overturned a lower court's attempt to put her on trial for attempted suicide.

After the court ordered her release, Sharmila resumed her hunger strike, her lawyer added.

Misuse of powers

Last year, India's Vice President Hamid Ansari admitted there had been "serious complaints of misuse of the AFSPA."

"This reflects poorly on the state and its agents," a statement from his office said.

Meantime, Amnesty International called Sharmila's arrests "farcical," saying she should not be taken into custody again.

"The judgment must end the farcical cycle of arrest and re-arrest that this brave activist has faced for so long. Authorities must not detain Irom Sharmila again but engage with the issues she is raising," said Shemeer Babu, the rights group's program director in India.

Activists and non-profit organizations have repeatedly urged the Indian government to scrap the AFSPA.

In 2005, a government-appointed committee recommended the law be abolished. Its recommendations remain under the government's "consideration," India's Deputy Home Minister Kiren Rijiju told the national parliament last month.

Manipur is an impoverished, landlocked state in India's remote northeastern belt. For years, many Manipuri tribal communities have resisted the authority of Delhi, claiming that they have suffered neglect from the central government.

This disaffection has given rise to occasional outbreaks of violence.

U.S. military advisers headed to front lines in Iraq

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 35 Second

(CNN)The upcoming Iraqi assault to retake Mosul from ISIS control could include U.S. military advisers near the front lines.

U.S. military leadership has held open the possibility it would recommend moving advisers closer to combat lines. As the key Mosul battle looms, that remains a potential consideration "if and when they believe it's necessary," a senior U.S. military official tells CNN.

The possible recommendation would need to be approved by President Barack Obama, who has said that U.S. troops will not be sent on a combat mission. But putting advisers with front-line Iraqi troops puts American troops in close range of what is likely to be an intense battle with the terror group.

Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. Lloyd Austin, head of U.S. Central Command, would make that recommendation to Obama if they determine Iraqis need U.S. help and there is no other option for providing it.

The official declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the situation but has direct knowledge of both generals' thinking.

The generals want to wait as long as possible to decide whether moving American ground troops closer to the front lines is necessary. Their hope is that Iraq will be able to field more experienced units perhaps as soon as this spring that can begin the Mosul assault, the official told CNN.

Right now, the most experienced and loyal Iraqi units are protecting Baghdad. The Iraqis may need to be convinced to move them into the Mosul operation, and backfill with other units. Retaking Mosul from ISIS is considered one of the most important objectives of Iraq forces.

This month, coalition airstrikes have stepped up around Mosul, in an effort to cut key ISIS supply lines into the city, as an opening move to a future assault. The U.S. military assessment is the soonest the assault could begin is spring.

Obama has been adamant that no U.S. troops will be put into direct ground combat in Iraq.

In a speech to troops in September, Obama said, "The American forces that have been deployed to Iraq do not and will not have a combat mission. They will support Iraqi forces on the ground as they fight for their own country against these terrorists."

What Dempsey and Austin are holding open is the possibility of a small number of U.S. military troops working as advisers alongside Iraqi units involved in the upcoming Mosul assault in a front-line combat situation. Those troops could potentially also work on the ground to help Iraq units pick out targets to strike, if a recommendation is made and the mission approved.

In September, Dempsey said he believed U.S. advisers on the front lines would not be needed. "But if it fails to be true, and if there are threats to the United States, then I of course would go back to the President and make a recommendation that may include the use of U.S. military ground forces." In recent weeks, advisers have gone out in the field.

Dempsey, for now, is strongly focusing on the pace of the Iraqi government meetings its goals first, according to the official. He still wants to see more progress on Iraq forming a unity government, proceeding with reconstruction goals and countering ISIS propaganda, the official said. "If we offer too much before Iraqis are ready, we are just painting over the rust," the official said. Recent comments by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi that the coalition wasn't doing enough to support Iraq only reinforced Dempsey's view, the official said.

And even working as advisers is risky for troops. Canadian forces in the field recently had to return fire when they came under attack during an advisory mission.

As for ISIS's current strength, the U.S. military assessment continues to be their momentum has been somewhat stalled in Iraq and territory gains in Syria are stagnant, the official said. The United States also believes ISIS is stepping up its terror tactics in both areas, including forcing people to fight, because they are having trouble recruiting and paying new fighters, the official said.

Reno Omokri And Abati Prepare President Goodluck Jonathan For Presidential Debate..(Hear Audio)

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 19 Second

With the Presidential elections on the Horizon, many Nigerians have been clamoring for a Presidential Debate where the candidates of all the contesting parties would come to the fore to reveal their agenda for Nigeria. However, many see it as merely the best platform for the 2 front runners, President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari of the APC to lock horns on an intellectual level.

In preparation for this eventuality, sources in Aso Rock revealed that The President and his Aides have been having clandestine meetings to fine-tune him in readiness for the debate.

FNN today received a mail from an anonymous source containing an audio clip of the most recent Debate Practice session, which we have carefully and painstakingly typed out, word for word, innuendo for innuendo, for your viewing.

GEJ: *taps microphone hung on his shoulder* Reno, is this thing working?

RENO: Yes Mr. President Sir, we can hear you loud and clear

GEJ: Good. Ehen Reuben, remember what I said. No unnecessarily difficult question please. It’s just debate, not WAEC Further Maths

ABATI: Yes Mr. President.

RENO: And we begin….

ABATI: Presidential Debate Simulation Take 1. Reno, you can start now.

RENO OMOKRI: Good Morning Mr. President and welcome to this Presidential Debate

GEJ: Good Morning Reno how is family?

RENO: *whispers* Sir, you’re supposed to call me Mr. Moderator. This is a simulation.

GEJ: Oh, I’m so sorry. Good Morning Mr. Moderator.

RENO OMOKRI: So Mr. President, Our 1st Question to you is this; how many credits did you get in your WASC?

GEJ: Ah. That’s an easy one; I got 3 Distinctions and 6 Credits from 7 subjects.

RENO: Wonderful. My next que…..

ABATI: Wait a minute, Mr President. 3 Distinctions and 6 Credits adds up to 9 Subjects, not 7.

GEJ: Eh? Oh……….uhm……..hmm………that’s correct. Might need to set up a committee to look into that……

RENO: Reuben please, we do not have time for Arithmetic. Next Question Mr. President; What do you have to say about Asari Dokubo’s recent rants in the media about breaking up Nigeria if you lose the election?

GEJ: Yes. You see, I have said this before. Just like Boko Haram, Asari is also our brother. You cannot send SSS to go and arrest your brother. Unless of course your brother is in the opposition party and is trying to make you lose election. This is not what Asari is doing. Boko Haram have been making video talking rubbish, have you seen me order a drone strike at Sambisa? It’s not like we don’t have drones. Have you heard of the Made In Nigeria AMEBO III drone? But he is our brother. We cannot just kill our brother. Same applies to Asari, he is our brother. I’ll have to call him on the phone and tell him to shut up some times *brings out phone and starts dialing*

ABATI: Not now Sir, Not Now. After the debate.

GEJ: Ehn? Okay then. Next Question Reno……I mean……….Mr. Moderator

RENO: Speaking about Boko Haram Sir, what are your plans to defeat them if elected for 4 more years? Nigerians have been wondering if your inability to end the menace in your current tenure is enough reason to vote in Gen. Buhari of the APC to see if he has a better plan of action, especially based on his Military background.

GEJ: This Boko Haram issue is not Child’s play as we all know. We also know America keeps doing us bad belle. Sell Arms to us, they say No. Okay send Marines to train our boys, they say no. Honestly I am tired. Chad and Niger aren’t helping matters either. Maybe every now and then Cameroon helps out but we are more or less in this on our own. I don’t think that will change if Buhari becomes President. Why would anyone refuse to help me but willingly want to help Buhari? Come on. I’m Younger, Friendlier, speak better English, Passed more subjects in WAEC, Have more swag, do more exercise…………..I mean, have you people not seen the video of me online doing exercise? Come on….

RENO: But General Buhari has a beautiful wife and a beautiful daughter…

GEJ: Reno leave that thing. Is it by beauty? Was JFK’s wife not a beauty queen that year? Did it stop Assassins from putting a bullet in his head? No it didn’t! Was Maryam Abacha not the most beautiful light skin ever in Aso Rock? Did it stop her husband from eating Indian Apple? See, beauty is nothing here. Faka is my sweetheart, she has the curves a man wants, she is my spec. As for my daughter, did you not see her wedding pictures? She may not be a beauty queen but we will still share Gold IPhone on her wedding.

ABATI: Wow……..Mr President you really know about history. We must add this to our campaign posters

GEJ: Yes Reuben, you do that.

RENO: Sir………..about the Youth on Twitter trying to get you re-elected….

GEJ:  But Reno what kind of questions did you even bring here?

RENO: Sir…

GEJ: My friend don’t sir me. You think this is the kind of questions they will ask that day? Do you even know who they hired to set the debate questions? AMANPOUR! And that wicked panel on Channel that were asking about the website of the NSCDC. You think these are the kain queshions they will ask that day? You disappoint me Reno. Get back to your tweets

ABATI: Very sorry see. I’ll personally see to it that the questions are revised

GEJ: Good. Has anyone seen Doyin of late? That fat man has been dodging my calls. I know he’s the one starting these stupid twitter hashtags. What is #GEJMyVal for God sake? When I said find a response to Febuhari I meant merge my own name with a month too! Like JonaMarch or Juneluck…….not that nonsense…..

NIGERIA: Buhari’s Friends, Violence and War against Corruption

0 0
Read Time:9 Minute, 1 Second

Most people get worried whenever they hear the Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari referring to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as “my leader.” If a badly tainted man like Tinubu is Buhari’s leader, then, we must all be wary of the man called Buhari himself. Tinubu has had and he is still having his hands in numerous dubious deals all over Lagos. He has converted so many government properties in Lagos to his personal use. He owns the Lekki Concession Company that illegally milks Lagosians daily with tolls on the Lekki-Epe Express Way. It recently emerged that Tinubu was convicted for money laundering in the United States some years back. According to documents relating to the conviction, the US court
ordered that the funds totaling $460,000 in the account in the name of Bola Tinubu represents proceeds of narcotics or were involved in financial transactions in violation of US laws and therefore ordered that these funds be forfeited to the United States Government. Neither a claim nor answer was filed on behalf of the defendant for the funds. This is the man Buhari calls ‘my leader.” It says a lot about Buhari himself.

What about Sani Ahmed Yerima, the corrupt, inept and morally bankrupt former governor of Zamfara State? He is also one of Buhari’s key allies. Yerima is a confirmed pedophile. These are the people frolicking with Buhari now.
Now, to the issue of election violence heating up the polity. As usual, Buhari’s friends have started issuing threats ahead of the Presidential election. We can all still remember Asiwaju’s threats of “rig and be roasted” before the Ekiti and Osun states gubernatorial election last year.
Then, the United States of America and many lover of peace faulted his threat. The US in a statement entitled, “Countering the crisis of credibility”, by its Consul General, Jeff Hawkins, wondered why politicians keep making elections incredible in Nigeria. Hawkins, who said the US had been watching the Nigeria political scene closely for about two years, warned Nigerian politicians against violence and disobedience to law.
Buhari and his cohorts are all over again, threatening to set up a parallel government if they fail to win the presidential election. The sponsorship of violence and intimidation, and the rhetorical threat thereof, are utterly unacceptable in a democratic society, and need to be expunged once and for all from the Nigerian polity and discourse. Many Nigerians are troubled by some of the rhetoric that has been thrown around in recent weeks and months as these elections draw closer. It not productive or reasonable to threaten violence, even when you perceive that others have been guilty of misconduct. Who benefits from that type of violent rhetoric? And why would any ordinary Nigerian accept such provocative language, especially considering the history of post-election violence in Nigeria, and the truly horrific carnage that this country has been suffering at the hands of Boko Haram?
Let me refer Buhari and his cohorts to the statement issued last year by the United States Government. It states: “If a candidate believes an election is threatened, then that candidate should be doing everything possible to see that the rules of the game are enforced properly – by having party agents in the numerous locations where they are permitted, for example, to bear witness to what happens – or doesn’t happen. That is part of the painstaking work of participating in, and building, a democracy. Drawing on or threatening violence is an attempt to short-circuit that process for the benefit of a few, but to the detriment of many.”
Buhari and his cohorts must realize that Nigerians have fought long and hard to earn the democratic rights they now possess and they want – and deserve – peaceful, credible elections across this great country in February 2015. That’s why these elections are a critical juncture. Every Nigerian – from the party leaders and candidates to average citizens – should do everything in his/her power to help meet those expectations, and thereby counter this crisis of credibility.

Already, Team Buhari has breached the peace accord with Jonathan. Their political thugs on Tuesday attacked the convoy of Jonathan in Katsina State during the continuation of his re-election campaign. Buhari is from the state.
According to reports, trouble started when Jonathan, accompanied by Vice President Namadi Sambo; National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu; and Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State among others, decided to pay a courtesy visit to the  late President Umoru Yar’Adua’s mother, Hajiya Dada. As the President and members of his entourage made their way into the Yar’Adua Quarters, the brooms-wielding youths, who were suspected to be members of the APC, chanting “Sai Buhari,” surged forward.
Security agents had a hectic time dispersing the crowd. The Buhari supporters regrouped and again moved to attack the President’s convoy as he was ready to leave the residence after the visit. Security agents fired tear gas canisters to disperse the youths to allow vehicles in the convoy speed off. As the presidential delegation made their way towards the Katsina Airport, the youths hurled stones at the convoy. What is Buhari trying to turn this election into? He wants to burn Nigeria because of his ambition. Already, Niger Delta youths are threatening to retaliate if Buhari visits Bayelsa. Where are we heading to?
Let us revisit the issue of anti-corruption. In all the rallies addressed by Buhari, he was always taking a swipe at the PDP and that the Jonathan administration was incapable of fighting corruption. Buhari and his cohorts need to listen to the comment of Peter Obi in this regard. The former governor of Anambra State said: “Everyone in Nigeria claims to be a saint and accuses others of being corrupt. We all read and also heard from those who were there what transpired at the APC primaries in Lagos. That is not corruption, right? While I agree that there is the need to strengthen institutions like the ICPC and EFCC, to fight the physical and more tangible forms of administrative corruption, there is also the far more fundamental need to fight corruption from its very roots.”
Let’s go to the issue of Boko Haram. Over the years, the government has always pointed accusing fingers at the opposition as stoking the flames of insurgency in a bid to take over government. Some people have even directly accused Buhari and his cohorts of sponsoring the insurgents. The rise in terrorist attacks in the weeks leading to the general election is a testimony to this. The aim of Buhari and his cohorts is to use the security challenges to win votes.

The US Department of States recently raised an alarm in this direction. The US government said that the recent incessant attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents could be as a result of the approaching general elections in Nigeria.
“There has been a sharp escalation in the number of reported casualties. I think the numbers tend to be from about 2009 to 2013 – there were a little over 1,000 casualties. I mean, we’ve obviously all seen the reported numbers just this week – which we can’t confirm exactly, but it clearly shows there’s been a sharp escalation.
“It’s because Boko Haram has tended to, particularly around something like an election, used political issues or sensitivities to try and inflame tensions. We’ve seen that as one of their tactics, and that’s why it’s so important to move forward with the election, because we believe it’s important. Well, I don’t want to prejudge.
“We’ve seen successful elections go forward in places that have pretty significant levels of violence. So, we believe the election should go forward. We know there are security challenges. We do think that the election is probably a factor. As I said, we believe the election should still go forward, even in the face of this pretty horrific violence,” Marie Harf, the US spokeswoman, told journalists. So, we can see where Buhari stands in all these. He has a big question to answer. He wants Nigerians to reward him for stoking the flames of insurgency, by voting him President.

This Buhari says he knows how to end Boko Haram attacks within months. We need to take a second look at this. This man surely knows something about Boko Haram attacks. We have to vote him into office before he would stop the attacks. We have to reward him for stoking insurgency. A food for thought for Nigerians.
The issues of Boko Haram aside, let’s take a second look at Buhari’s certificate scandal. It is instructive to critically examine the statement of the Army regarding his claims that his school certificate is with them. To assert that the original credentials of former Head of State are not in its custody, the Nigerian Army has thrown the ex-leader a poser. The Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Brig-Gen. Olajide Laleye, last week asked: “if indeed the Army is in possession of those certificates, why has he (Buhari) not demanded for them since 2003 when he forayed into presidential elections and had other shots at the presidency in 2007 and 2011 respectively?”
Laleye insisted that contrary to insinuations, the Army does not have in its possession the originals but only copies of credentials of all its officers whether serving, retired or deceased, including those of Gen. Muhammad Buhari (rtd). Laleye explained that the Military Secretary (MS) keeps copies of credentials, with the original in possession of the individual officers.
He added that even the copies domiciled with the MS are accessible to their owners within 24 hours. “The Military Secretary is the custodian of the military records of all officers serving, retired or deceased.  Therefore original credentials are with the officer while copies are with the MS. Gaining access to one’s credentials in the MS is possible within 24 hours”, he said. So, what Jazz is Buhari telling us? Buhari should simply surrender. Is he saying that he does not know that he can apply to WAEC for a replica if the original certificate is missing? What about the statement of result issued to him by the secondary school he attended?
Buhari only replied with his examination details and not the required certificate. So, when will he provide the certificate or Certified True Copy?

NIGERIA: The Things That Count Against Jonathan

0 0
Read Time:11 Minute, 18 Second

Yet again, I believe that as the campaigns take on a life of their own, the issues that should be bothering us as we listen to the two leading presidential candidates: President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) and Gen Muhammadu Buhari of the All Peoples Congress (APC) is to judge from their utterances, their promises, body language  and guage the measure of belief and faith we can attach to them.
In the places President Jonathan has campaigned, all I see is the determination to hoodwink Nigerians all over again. He says he will not disappoint Nigerians. Once he was trusted. But not much came out of such trust. The enormous goodwill he had in 2011 has been burnt. Many of those who were on his side then have long left him. He knows. Were it not so, re-electing President Jonathan would have been a fait accompli. But it can hardly be so now. All other talks to the contrary are only in the character of political propaganda.

In areas he has not done well, he blames it on past governments, forgetting that he has been in office now for almost six years.  As a Commander-in-Chief for six years, he has held the forte for 72 months against Buhari’s 20.
President Jonathan should have no excuse about the shortcomings in the army. With talks about a Trillion Naira every year for the military to refurbish and upgrade its system and equipment, latching back on what happened 31 years ago, is to seek an easy escape from the issue. How effective did he expect a 31-year old weapon?
If that much is truly appropriated for the military every year, how much of monitoring has been done in ensuring that indeed the money was being used for what it was meant for and not being diverted to private pockets?
If there is a failing in this regard, who should we blame? The president of course, on whose table the buck stops.
To blame the failings of the military on what Buhari did or failed to do 31 years ago is to behave like a typical bad workman who usually complains about his tools.
Another thing that counts against President Jonathan is the shrinking economy.
Either by his own management default or global economic downturn, Nigeria is in dire straits right now. With the Excess Crude Account nearly razed, to the Naira that has lost almost all of its essence, with the concomitant inflation, Nigeria is truly on her knees economically. Worse still, the unchecked huge crude theft have only helped to deepen our economic woes. Many states would soon have difficulty paying their workforce. It happened last December. Little wonder that they are already echoing the song of austerity measures. Life is gonna be tough!
Beyond the shrinking economic strength is also the shrinking geographical space. With 20 Local Governments, seized by the Boko Haram insurgents, for months now, Nigeria’s territorial integrity has shrunk under Jonathan’s watch. His own home state of Bayelsa has just eight LGAs.  And that could mean that a size more than a state is in the hands of insurgents.
Yes, he inherited the Boko Haram scourge, but has he done enough to tame the menace? I dare say no. Jonathan should have realized that his public rating dropped sharply after the abduction of the Chibok girls. The presidency kept fumbling and bungling the rescue efforts and advocacies. Suddenly those clamouring for the release of the girls became government’s enemies. . It soon became a government-versus-us tangle.

The Police, represented by Mbu Joseph Mbu, now an AIG, like attack dogs, were unleashed on them.  That same erratic and controversial cop has been sent to Lagos few weeks to the election. The message is loud enough
Not even the rousing offer of international help in the wake of the Chibok kidnap yielded any fruit. Many advanced countries like France, Germany, UK, USA, Israel, Canada etc had offered to assist Nigeria trace and recover the kidnapped girls.
But week after week, with no progress, all the countries, one-by-one, have all gone back home and left us in our quandary. Recently, even neighbouring African countries who had agreed to form a joint troop against the insurgents have all pulled out. Does it not show that something is wrong somewhere? Why is everybody abandoning Nigeria? The US authorities recently disclosed that the discontinuation of America in the programme was because Nigeria had failed to keep her own end of the deal.
Do we need any military expert to tell us that something is wrong with our army? Were we not told recently that the feat in recapturing Mubi, for instance, was because soldiers based in the south -east had to be deployed to Mubi before they could chase out the militants? Were we not told of how just 30 insurgents overran a platoon of soldiers?
Yet another drawback for President Jonathan is the rising cases of impunity. The brazen acts of impunity is believed to have been fuelled by the fact that the system can always be circumvented. There is neither fear nor caution in the way most government personnel carry on. I will not be tired of citing the case involving the Petroleum minister, Mrs Diezani Allison Madueke who was said to have spent N10 billion on flying private jets. The members of the House of Reps wanted to probe it. But because she had presidential cover, she defied all invitations to appear before the House. The president once berated the lawmakers for harassing his ministers.
It is interesting that unemployment has been an issue in the campaigns. While the PDP is promising 2 million jobs a year, the APC is promising 3 million jobs per year. Interesting! However, the federal government has been bandying figures of employments provided in excess of a million. I hardly know where they were employed. I suspect that most of such figures emanating from the Finance ministry are just phony.
Pray, with the price of crude crashing to less than half in the international market in the last six months, how come President Jonathan only realized he had to slightly reduce the price of pump price last week? Is it for nothing many have attributed it to a political gesture, meant to lure voters?

PIB
Recently, the Senate president, David Mark had assured that the Petroleum Industry Bill  (PIB) will be passed before the 7th session of the National Assembly winds up. We can hardly wait. However, with a good lobby system, all the barriers against the Bill would have been surmounted long before now.
Here is an executive whose party controls the national assembly until few months ago when the Speaker defected to a rival party. To what advantage has the executive put the majority of the PDP in the National Assembly to use? Does it not show something is wrong? There is something not adding up? For how long shall we run a serious business of governing Nigeria like a game of chance?
Perhaps one major issue that has dogged the Jonathan administration is the issue of corruption. The president hardly believes there is corruption in the country. He recently said, in Enugu, that Nigerians are very hardworking. True! But to say that he cannot see the corruption dancing on the streets of the nation means that he badly needs the glasses of Tinubu so his eyes  can see what we are all seeing. After all, he had discounted the crime when he said stealing is not corruption. The boast about Nigeria having the largest number of Private jets in Africa does not quite represent the hard work of Nigerians.
Sadder still, such line of arguments by the president inadvertently embolden the crooks in the land. That is why they have been carrying on with the unstated Paulean declaration: if the presidency be for me, who can be against me? Is anyone still in doubt why the anti-corruption agencies have gone tepid over the years? They are reading the body language of Mr President.
Did we not hear that a top member of the government, using a proxy floated a new airline—Peace Airline, flying several routes in Nigeria? How clever we can be in illicit acts!
Don’t we know that many of the private jet owners are into deals with the Nigerian state?

Matters Miscellaneous
PVC Problem
With just about three weeks to the elections, I am yet, like many other Nigerians, to get my Permanent Voters’ Card (PVC), for no fault of mine.
I had gone to both the local government headquarters of where I live as well as the INEC office in my Local government all to no avail. At the INEC office, the lady who attended to me, explained that of the 700persons in the unit where I registered, only two of the PVCs have been printed. Shocked! Two out of 700! The story was the same last Wednesday, when the lady explained that over 50 per cent of PVCs are yet to be claimed.
Here is an election that INEC announced almost one year ago. It is amazing that as basic as the card, without which no one can vote, is yet an issue of plenty grammar. Professor Jega, will need more than mere assurances to calm the frayed nerves. We want our PVCs!

The Pains of a Country
That is the title of my book billed for presentation and launching on Tuesday, January 27 at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos..
Published by Posterity Media, the book, which appears heavy and beautiful, had taken a while in coming.
But it is ready now. Those who have done a few preview are enthralled.
It is a collection of some of the articles I have written over the years. Looking back into some of the articles, I find that our problems as a nation remain largely the same, year-in-year-out.
Media mavens, captains of industries and well heeled politicians amongst others are billed to grace the  launch which should also host a mini Colloquium on  The 2015 Elections and the Prospect of  New Nigeria.

Fayose’s Foibles
If there was any more evidence needed to prove that Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State lacks the gubernatorial content and character, his mindless front page advertorial in the Punch Newspaper last  Monday, proved it beyond every reasonable doubt. The advert has already suffered so much condemnation in the public domain, both for Fayose and the newspaper house which accepted to publish such reckless rubbish. But in dragging in the sacred issue of death into the banal portal of politics, Fayose had attempted to play God. But he is not. Like everyone else, he is a mere mortal. One who could go to bed today and not wake up tomorrow.
To draw a link of death for all leaders from the northwest, prefacing the infamy with a Biblical verse is to elevate heresy to a ridiculous height. It casts vexatious aspersion on that region, implying that it is a region that produces leaders who die in office. How reckless! It is most ungodly to wish another man dead, all in the name of silly politics.
Here was a man, the other day, who was rolling on the floor of Deeper Life Church altar in thanksgiving. How hypocritical!
I have always known that Fayose portends the despicable and ugly image of Nigerian politics which we are labouring to do away with.
Who says the Buhari that he is reviling cannot outlive even him? Is Fayose God?

Echoes of Violence
I was quite glad penultimate Wednesday when both Gen Muhammadu Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan as well as the other also-ran presidential candidates agreed to sign a pact that they will not encourage or support violence, before, during or after the elections.
However, it is one thing to sign such a pact and give an impression of being disposed to peace, and it is quite another to secretly supply all the gasoline that can infuriate the fire of violence.
Already, the signs of war are being seen across the horizon. With the destruction of campaign posters and bill boards of opponents, attack and burning of the buses of President Jonathan’s campaign organization, plus the bombing of APC office in Okrika, Rivers State, the stage had seemed set for electoral Armageddon. But hopefully, the signing of the pact should have zipped the act finally. Last Wednesday Jonathan’s campaign vehicles were attacked and burnt, with a casualty in Katsina, also in Bauchi the president’s convoy was attacked with six SSS operatives hospitalised despite the signed accord.  No election or office is worth anybody’s life. Politicians must therefore, both in their body language and pronouncements be seen to be regularly denouncing electoral violence. Their supporters must be cautioned enough.
All said, what will fan the embers of violence is injustice and fraud. Let the preachment of free and fair election subsist and be upheld. It hurts to be denied your place on the later of electoral fraud and manipulation.
What it therefore requires is that all must strive to play by the rules. In all cases, let the better or best candidate win and collectively make Nigeria better for everybody. That is the whole essence.
