Condolence visit: Patience Jonathan lied against Rivers State government

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 36 Second

Mrs. Amaechi signing the condolence register at Mrs. Oba’s residence.

The First Lady, Patience Jonathan, was economical with the truth when she accused the Rivers State government of ignoring her moment of bereavement, PREMIUM TIMES can reveal.

Mrs. Jonathan, in a tersely worded statement, late Monday, sought to lay to rest accusations that she snubbed Tele Ikuru, the Rivers State Deputy Governor, who had come to receive her at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Sunday.

The First Lady justified her actions stating that no official of her home state came to commiserate with her family after she lost her mother, Charity Oba, in a fatal auto accident.

Mrs. Oba died along the East-West Road in Rivers State, on July 22.

Mrs. Jonathan flanked by Mrs. Amaechi and the First Lady of Bayelsa State during Mrs. Jonathan’s visit to Port Harcourt after the death of her mother.

“It should be noted that while several groups and individuals from across the country came to condole the first lady and Mr. President on the death of her mother, no official of Rivers state government deemed it fit to pay the first family condolence visit, yet they claimed the first lady is a daughter of Rivers state,” Mrs. Jonathan had said.

“He who must go to equity must go with clean hands. They should learn to give respect to those who deserve respect so that they too can earn respect,” she had added.

But PREMIUM TIMES findings show that Rivers State government not only condoled with the First Lady; Judith Amaechi, wife of Rotimi Amaechi, the Rivers State Governor, was accompanied by Mr. Ikuru and other state government functionaries to a condolence visit to Mrs. Jonathan on July 26.

The Rivers State delegation had, earlier on that day, received Mrs. Jonathan at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

Several photographs of Mrs. Amaechi signing the condolence register at the King Perekule’s residence of the late Mrs. Oba were published by various newspapers.

During the condolence visit, Mrs. Amaechi signed the register placed before a framed portrait of Mrs. Oba and a photograph of Favour, her grandchild, who also died in the accident.

One week after Mrs. Jonathan’s loss, Mr. Amaechi issued a condolence statement over Mrs. Oba’s demise saying that he received the news with “utmost shock and sadness.”

“No doubt the demise of a loved one leaves us feeling hollow and alone. Yet, in the midst of our pain, we must not forget that we are Christians and therefore should not mourn like those without hope,” the Rivers governor had said.

The First Lady had reportedly snubbed Mr. Ikuru, who had gone to welcome her on Sunday, at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

Mrs. Jonathan’s security aides prevented Mr. Ikuru and other Rivers State government officials from getting near the First Lady.

Mrs. Jonathan justified her actions in her statement, late Monday, saying that no official of her home state came to commiserate with her family in their time of loss.

Igbo Deportation: Group demands N500billion compensation from Lagos Government

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 39 Second

A Pan-Igbo group, the Enugu State Roots Initiative (ESRI) wants the Lagos state government to pay N500 billion as compensation to the people it repatriated to Anambra state.

Aside that, the group is asking the Lagos state government to provide accommodation for those affected and publicly apologize for denigrating their personal liberty.

In a statement signed by the National President of the body, Barrister Joni Icheka; Secretary, Mr. Uche Nwegbo and Treasurer, Barrister Emma Nwodo, ESRI maintained that the deportation negates sections 21 (1), 22 (1) and 15 (3) of the Constitution.

They also condemned the Lagos state government for sealing off the property of the former Abia State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, as well as statements credited to the former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, which it said. were capable of causing ethnic hatred and a breakdown of law and order.

It said: “ESRI therefore, demands an immediate payment of the sum of N500 billion compensation to these ill-treated Nigerians, whom the Lagos state government said were Ndi Anambra.

“Apart from paying them the compensation, the state government should also immediately provide them with befitting housing accommodation and publicly apologize for denigrating their personal liberty and smearing the sanctity of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“If the Lagos State Government and their Governor fails to do these things within one month, we will be left with no option than to conclude that it was done with clear negative mind-set and vendetta and we would be left with no option than to take appropriate legal action,” the statement said.

They Pointed out that deporting any Nigerian from one part of the country to another negates the constitution of the country. The group described the action as ill-advised and that it exposed the victims to danger and extreme weather of this season.

Continuing, the group said, “The Enugu Roots Initiative (ESRI), having watched with studied silence and dismay, the abracadabra and public reactions to the development is compelled to state that Section 41 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution states that: ‘Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof, and no citizen of Nigeria shall be expelled from Nigeria or refused entry thereby or exit therefrom.’

“Similarly, Section 42 (1) states that: ‘A citizen of Nigeria of a particular community, ethnic group, place of origin, sex, religion or political opinion shall not, by reason only that he is such a person:-

(a) be subjected either expressly by, or in the practical application of, any law in force in Nigeria or any executive or administrative action of the government, to disabilities or restrictions to which citizens of Nigeria of other communities, ethnic groups, places of origin, sex, religions or political opinions are not made subject; or

(b) be accorded either expressly by, or in the practical application of, any law in force in Nigeria or any such executive or administrative action, any privilege or advantage that is not accorded to citizens of Nigeria of other communities, ethnic groups, places of origin, sex, religions or political opinions.

“Also, the same Constitution in Section 15 (3) stated clearly that: “For the purpose of promoting national integration, it shall be the duty of the state to: ‘(a) provide adequate facilities for and encourage free mobility of people, goods and services throughout the federation; (b) secure full residence rights for every citizen in all parts of the federation.

“The ‘state’ referred to in this section of the constitution is the entire country, Nigeria which includes Lagos and Anambra states. There is no exception to these constitutional injunctions”.

“The claim that the deportees were taken out of Lagos due, to their presumed socio-economic status, religion or tribe, or for whatever reason, could be dubbed as “undesirable elements” in any part of the country and could be so cruelly and inhumanly treated.

“It should be pointed out that the only offence these people committed, according to the Lagos State Government, was that they were “poor”: no more, no less.

“The second offence they may have committed was that they were presumed to be Igbo people, and so, should not be seen begging for arms or engage in any considered “menial activity” in Lagos State.

“But, the questions should be asked: “Does it mean that all Lagos State indigenes resident in every part of the country, especially in Lagos State, are fully and officially employed?

“Do we have persons of the category referred to as destitute Anambra indigenes from other parts of the country that could still be found on the streets of Lagos State even now”?

Insisting that the “Area Boys” who parade the streets of Lagos are worse than the deportees, ESRI said such people are the ones who require urgent rehabilitation since they are indigenes of Lagos State.

Commenting on the seal-up of the property of Orji Uzor Kalu in Ikoyi, Lagos, the group stated that the deportation “is even more provocative when one puts into perspective that notable Igbo personalities, like the former Abia State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzo Kalu, who spoke against this despicable deportation in his weekly Leadership Column in the Sun Newspaper, was equally visited with this selective amnesia. His constitutional and rightful liberty to his property was curtailed for several hours by the goons of the Lagos State Government.

Jonathan asked us to bring an additional state from South/East for proclamation” – Eze Nri.

Jonathan asked us to bring an additional state from S/East for proclamation" – Eze Nri.

The traditional ruler of the Nri Ancient Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Igwe Obidiegwu Onyesoh, MFR; yesterday confirmed that President Goodluck Jonathan recently directed traditional rulers in the South East geo-political zone to bring out an additional state to him from the zone for possible proclamation.

Igwe Onyesoh who disclosed this to members of Ogirishi Igbo Foundation during his inspection of the on-going stadium project at the Rojenny Games Village, Oba, Anambra State, maintained that it was during a recent meeting between Jonathan and South East traditional rulers, during which they pressed their demand for the much agitated creation of an additional state from the zone, that Jonathan honestly promised to accept any state they unianimously brought out for necessary processes.

He therefore urged Ndigbo to harmonize themselves and agree on a state to be forwarded to Jonathan for processes, because according to him if we fail to agree on one state, then we should have ourselves to blame and not Jonathan or federal government.

BBA 2013: Voices in Beverly s head

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 8 Second

Hallucinating or speaking to voices in your head is a peculiar habit, to say the least. Beverly and Dillish however, seem to be the only Housemates that don't find this odd at all.

Sexy girl Beverly took to the Diary Room this afternoon and shared with Big Brother how she has been running her Chase race with a friend. "The voice in my head sounds just like me. Sometimes, it tells me to accept the negative, which I don't. Other times it's positive and makes me happy. I will tell you now that I hear this voice every minute. It tells me something very good is about to happen to me. My life is about to change," the sexy Nigerian said. When asked by Biggie if her new friend has a name, Beverly said no. "I haven’t named the voice yet. I will soon," the Nigerian cutie said.

When quizzed about alter egos and voices, Cleo simply laughed off the question and told Biggie "I have not seen anyone with an alter ego, or who speaks to people in their head." Maybe she needs to observe Bev and Dillish more?

BBA 2013:Elikem and Beverly fight, again!

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 31 Second

Beverly has issues with Elikem for telling Pokello something he was not supposed to.

The House almost came to a standstill this afternoon when Beverly and Elikem got into their second argument in as many days. Beverly revealed how disappointed in Elikem she is after he told Pokello something she had said. "You shouldn't have told Pokello what I told you. You're supposed to be my brother," Beverly said.

Beverly happens to be one of the Housemates, apart from Bimp, who went and told Elikem that Pokello is a very dangerous woman and Elikem should watch his back when dealing with her."You told me that Pokello is dangerous and at that time she had been Swapped to the Diamond House, while I was stuck in the Ruby House. I was shocked when I heard the same thing from two different people and confronted her about it. I thought she had done something to betray me. I don’t regret asking her about it because I care about her. I care about you too and I would do the same if I heard something about you. I would ask you and be straight up about it. If it concerns people you love, you will let them know and try to protect them," Elikem said.

Beverly defended herself and said Elikem shouldn't have asked Pokello about it. "When I said she is dangerous, it wasn't because of something specific that she did, I was just concerned about you," Beverly said. Just the other day, Beverly laid into Elikem for failing to comfort her when Angelo was Evicted.

Beverly, Cleo and Dillish, Elikem and Melvin are The Chase Finalists. Vote here for the winner of the USD 300 000 grand prize.
