When will Queen Elizabeth II abdicate the throne?

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 53 Second

Ordinarily, I would not meddle into the affairs of peoples of other lands, especially faraway lands across the great seas and oceans and mountains, but when they made their business the business of the entire world simply because they control the means of information dissemination and inadvertently controlling what others think, when and how, then they courted my trouble.

I knew this madness has reached the market place when The Nation newspapers, Lagos, in its edition of today, Wednesday 24th July 2013, could not think of a more apt photograph to grace its cover except the photograph of the new born English Prince. What has that got to do with us, while I would not quarrel with such photograph in the gossip section of the Newspaper, having it as the sole photograph on the cover rankles my imagination.

I refused to be sucked into that babymania many across the world got themselves into,to me the drama of the last few days is nothing more than a reality show akin to Big Brother Africa which I don’t watch.

Now that she has three heirs waiting for the same throne, shouldn’t the Queen deem it fit to abdicate? Is she not seeing that Prince Charles is already graying? Is she not aware of what has been happening to her peers in other parts of the world in recent times?

Monarchs who rose to the throne in ‘Stone Age’ are now feeling out of place confronting the challenges of the digital age, and they are giving ways to their heirs, except ofcourse the longest reigning monarch in the world today, Queen Elizabeth, if I am not mistaken.

Born 21 April 1926, she is still the constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states and their territories and dependencies, and head of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations. She is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and carries the title of Defender of the Faith for a Church that has gone full circle in recent times in admitting the inadmittable.

On her accession on 6 February 1952, she became Head of the Commonwealth and Queen Regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon. Between 1956 to 1992, this number reduced with changes and independence of a number of countries but she is still the Queen of Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Having been on the throne for 61 years, hers’ is the second longest for a British monarch; only Queen Victoria, her great-great grandmother, has reigned longer at over 63 years.

Her ascension to the throne is by a stroke of luck due to the abdication of her Uncle Edward VIII because of ‘woman issues’ which presented opportunity for her father to become the King in 1936 as George VI.To whom much is given, much is equally expected. As a great grandmother, should she not have mercy on her son and grandson that they too should have a taste of that which she has enjoyed in over three score years? At least she has celebrated her Silver, Golden, and Diamond Jubilees in 1977, 2002, and very lavishly in 2012, respectively.

Even if that is not enough, she should take a cue from others whose reign was even far shorter than hers, such as King Albert II of Belgium who reigned from August 9, 1993 and abdicated on July 21, 2013 in favor of his son Prince Philippe, Duke of Brabant. Or even her good friend Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands who reigned from 30 April 1980 and abdicated in favor of her eldest son Willem-Alexander. Even Prince Charles and Camilla went for that abdication party and had a swell time.

Even from quarters where one thought people would hang on to power, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar abdicated recently, he reigned from 27 June 1995 to 25 June 2013 in favor of his son Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani who 33, almost the age of Queen Elizabeth’s grandson. Conservative Asians have also witnessed their own abdication, in 2006, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, King of Bhutan abdicated; he reigned from 24 July 1972 to December 15, 2006 and left in favor of his eldest son, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.

Mama Eliza, please I beg you on behalf of Prince Charles, whom I know will not tell you how he is feeling because he is even looking older than you already.

Nigeria: Gov. Gabriel Suswam gives condition to return to Northern State Governors Forum

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 4 Second

Abuja – Gov. Gabriel Suswam of Benue says he will not identify with Northern State Governors Forum (NSGF) unless the leadership and some of the members purge themselves of betrayal of confidence.

Suswam made this known when he spoke to State House Correspondents shortly after a closed door meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan, in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said he came to brief Jonathan on the efforts made to resolve the recurring clashes between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in Benue and Nasarawa State.

“I won’t say that I vowed not to return to the forum, I will better say that I have issues with the way things are going.

“I believe that as a Northerner, and as one of the present leaders, we should as leaders be able to have confidence and have integrity enough for us to take a decision and follow it through.

“And if is established that we can now jointly and collectively take a decision on behalf of the North and also on behalf of this country and stand by that decision, then I will have no problem.

“But for now, I have an issue and that issue to me is germane and as far as I am not satisfied that that issue had been addressed, I maintain my position,’’ he said.

He said that as long as the issues linger in the forum, he would not be part of the group until he was satisfied that collective decisions were not changed arbitrarily.

Suswam withheld his membership of NSGF following the failure of its chairman to present Gov. Jonah Jang as the consensus candidate of Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

Gov Babangida Aliyu of Niger had backed the election reportedly held by the NGF, in which Gov. Rotmi Amaechi of Rivers, emerged winner.

On his meeting with the president, Suswam said it was meant to address the incessant clashes between the farmers and the Fulani nomads.

He said he came to update the president on the resolutions and the actions so far taken to curb the attacks and also solicit for supports of the Federal Government.

Suswam said that a 14-member committee comprising of seven members each from both states had been constituted on the issue.

“We resolved to set up the committees at the local governments that share borders both in Nasarawa and Benue.

The governor said the Fulani herdsmen and the farmers were excited about the development.

130 million Nigerians generate own electricity – NOI Polls reveal

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 19 Second

About 81 per cent or 130 million Nigerians, out of the about 160 million Nigerians, generated their own electricity through alternative sources to compensate for irregular power supply, according to the result of a series of Power Sector Polls conducted by NOI Polls Limited for the second quarter of 2013.

According to the results made available to Vanguard, a combined average of 69 per cent of Nigerians or 110 million Nigerians, have experienced increase in their spending on alternative power supply compared to a year ago.

The result of the poll further showed that an average of 47 per cent of Nigerian adults said that electricity supply was poor or went from bad to worse in the second quarter of 2013.

According to the poll results, the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA), passed in 2005, initiated the unbundling of government’s power plants under the Nigerian Electricity Power Authority (NEPA).

“They were formed into business units and regulated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) thus paving the way for public-private partnership and consequently the privatization of the power sector.

“The privatisation process is still underway and is intended to revive the power sector and invariably the Nigerian economy, as homes and industries alike will receive adequate and consistent quality of power supply.

“In order to ascertain the perceptions of Nigerians regarding the power sector reforms, the hours of power supply received daily and expenditure on alternative sources of power compared to a year ago, NOI Polls introduced the Power Sector Polls Project in April 2013 to monitor these trends and will release quarterly reports on findings of the polls. This result release marks the first in the series,” the poll said.

Continuing, the researchers said, “Over 3000 phone owning Nigerian adults aged 18 years and above were interviewed across this three month period (April-June) and some of their responses to the poll will be analysed in this report.

“In order to measure the level of power supply to households, respondents were asked: ‘How would you describe power supply in your area in the past 1 month?’

“A combined average of 47 per cent said power supply had either remained bad (25 per cent) or had worsened (22 per cent); compared with about 33 per cent who said they witnessed some slight improvement, and 20 per cent who experienced no difference in the past month.

“Nonetheless, it is worth pointing that the poll results indicate a one-point increase between April and June (April: 31, June: 32) of respondents who saw some improvement, a 5-point drop in respondents who said it remains bad (April: 27, June: 22) and a 3-point increase in those who said it remained the same (April: 18, June: 21).

The polls have indicated a link between power supply and the president’s approval rating; as it was observed that in the months where respondents perceived that power improved, the president’s rating seemed to increase and vice versa. The month of May had the best power supply of the three months.

Figure 1 illustrates the three month trend.
”The next question sought to measure the typical number of hours of continuous power supply experienced in the household on a daily basis: ‘On the average, how many hours of continuous power supply does your household experience daily?’

“Averages across three months show that between April and June 42% of respondents claimed to experience about 1-4 hours of power supply on a typical day. There marks a 4-point decline in the proportion of respondents who received 1-4 hours of continuous power between April and June (April: 45%, June: 41%); a 7-point increase in respondents who received 15-19 hours of power (April: 3%, June 10%); and also a 2-point increase in respondents who received 10-14 hours of power (April: 9%, June: 11%).

Nigeria: Igbos should forget 2015 Presidency – Arthur Nzeribe

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 17 Second

ABUJA- AHEAD of the 2015 Presidential election, Senator Arthur Nzeribe Wednesday asked his kinsmen, the Igbos to jettison that idea as that will not be feasible because of lack of unity in the zone, just as he warned that the people of the East were not just ready for it.

He also said that if the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP must get it right and move away from its present crises, the National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, all members of the National Working Committee, NWC must go, adding, ‘’the PDP must clear the desk including Bamanga Tukur to get it right.’’

Speaking with Journalists yesterday at his Apo residence in Abuja, the Oguta born Political Maverick from Orlu, Imo State, told his people bluntly that before they seek for the exalted position, they must first put their house in order by speaking in unison.

Chief Nzeribe who based his position on previous unsuccessful attempts by the Igbos and also due to what he termed endemic disarray amongst the Igbo politicians, said, ‘‘Until we start speaking with one voice we cannot get the Presidency’’. We should not try it now, we are not just ready for anything like that, we must first put our house in order.’’

He also warned that ahead of 2015 elections, Nigerians must note that the country was bigger than any body irrespective of status, adding that politicians must therefore put their selfish interest in their handbags to save the country.
