Nigeria: Bayelsa govt alleges plot to destablise state

Yenagoa—The Bayelsa State Government raised alarm, Tuesday that it had uncovered plans by some people to cause crisis in the state and discredit the government.

The government in a statement alleged that “these persons with the active support and collaboration of some desperate politicians and their collaborators from neighbouring states, who do not mean well for the state plan to embark on a sponsored mass street protest as part of their campaign of calumny and propaganda against the state government.”

To this end, the state governor, Mr Seriake Dickson has directed security operatives in the state to be on alert and deal decisively with trouble makers within the ambit of the law.

A statement by the Chief Pres Secreatry to the Governor of the state, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said: “In recent times, we have seen deliberate attempts by this group of desperate power seekers sponsoring some gullible graduates to take to the streets. They were also behind the recent protest by pensioners in the state.

“It is sad to note that they are now on a planned mission to incite unsuspecting youths to take to the streets to protest against the state government.”

“As a responsible government, we will not sit down and fold our hands while these persons continue to threaten and undermine the peace and security that our government has worked so hard to put in place.

“Hence, we wish to sound a note of warning to all and sundry that government will not hesitate to bring down the full weight of the law on anybody that breaches the existing peace.

“We have it on good authority that this disgruntled politicians are going round doling out cash to recruit youths in the state to join in the dastardly act.

“It is also sad to note that there are plans by this so-called political leaders to re-open militant camps in the creeks and procure arms as part of their agenda to make the state ungovernable.”

Nigeria: ASUU: No alternative to strike?

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 12 Second

“What is wrong with these lecturers sef? Are they the only civil servants in Nigeria? Why would they continue to hold us to ransom with their incessant strike actions?” queried Dapo, really looking vexed. The traffic that had come to a stand-still this Friday evening along the Oshodi-Apapa expressway must have added to his annoyance.

“To be honest, it is getting too much. I hear they are complaining that government has refused to pay them their allowance for teaching and supervising more than acceptable number of courses and projects,” commented TJ.

“Put yourself in their shoes. You reach an agreement with your employer and he decides not to implement it. Is that fair? Should we blame ASUU for fighting for their rights?” asked Jude.

“Ehn, if your employer refuses to keep to agreements, then take a walk,” countered TJ.

“The blame should be squarely placed at the doorsteps of government which has refused to do its duty, which is to adequately fund education. ASUU is saying it does not want to keep churning out half-baked graduates,” said Iyke.

“I am not against them fighting for their rights but the method (strike), has not worked so why not change tactics? Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The strike approach has not worked, so they should look for alternatives at least for the sake of students,” said Dapo.

“Government will not understand any other language; after all they have nothing at stake. Their children are all schooling abroad,” said Iyke.

“And to think that most of these people in government all passed through the ivory tower. It’s so sad that they are playing politics with the future of this nation,” stated Iyke.

“As long as education is not adequately funded and made compulsory for every child, then the war against insecurity is a waste of time. I pity those sending their children abroad to acquire education because after that, they will come back here to meet us. As the saying goes: A child who will not allow its mother to sleep will not sleep. So they will definitely not enjoy their wealth in this country as long as their neighbours are uneducated and not economically empowered.

“In 2007, Ghana’s Finance Minister said that Ghana spent about $1 billion on tertiary education alone in 2006/2007 which represented 45% of the total education budget and Nigeria is busy groping in the dark. When we begin to reap the whirlwind from the wind we are sowing today, Boko Haram will be a child’s play,” noted Pat.

“Our universities are under-funded, libraries are decrepit and researchers are not equipped to work. For crying out loud, a university is supposed to be a citadel of knowledge but what do we have?” asked Jude.

“You know what? These countries where these politicians send their wards to should ban such students from their countries. Let them go to school in Nigeria. Perhaps, that will cause the politicians to sit up,” suggested Mercy.

“Impossicant! You are asking them to reject something that will grow their economy? No way!” said Iyke.

“What annoys me with their strike is that they won’t see it to the end. Before you say Jack Robinson, some of the officials will be bribed by government and they will call off the strike and after some time, they will call for strike again. Makes no sense,” noted Pat.

“My suggestion is that salaries and allowances of politicians should be reduced and education at both primary and secondary levels made free and compulsory,” said Mercy.

The National Association of Nigerian Students threatens FG, carpets First Lady, Wike others

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 55 Second

ABUJA – The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), yesterday, threatened to paralyze all economic activities in the nation political capital, if the Federal Government fails to address the current imbroglio in the Rivers State.

NANS, who gave 14 days ultimatum to the government to find lasting solution to the unrest, also berated the Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patient Jonathan and the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike for their roles in the crisis rocking the State.

The Union, who did not exonerate the Presidency from the matter called on President Goodluck Jonathan, to call them to order to stop interfering in the running of the administration of the state.

NANS noted that “it is not acceptable for the 5 legislators in the Rivers State House of Assembly to override the collective will of 27 members. It is totally wrong! We demand that the five legislators, who were responsible for igniting the crisis, be properly sanctioned and trimmed to size”.

A statement signed by the Acting Senate President of NANS, Comrade John Shima, demanded for adequate security in the state House of Assembly, while calling for “the immediate redeployment of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, who from every indication has gone political”.

The union said that, it restrained its self initially to comment on the matter, on the ground that all the parties involved were indigenes of the state, “but after the fracas at the Rivers State House of Assembly on 9th July, 2013 and the fallouts from it, we see the need to expeditiously intervene in the matter, as it has set a very bad precedence for our much cherished democracy and is even capable of plunging the entire nation, not only Rivers State into anarchy.

“In line with the foregoing, we wish to state unequivocally and in the strongest of terms, that the blatant arrogation of legislative powers by a relative minority of five (5) legislators in the Rivers State House of Assembly, against the majority of twenty seven (27) legislators, is in itself a huge aberration and the height of legislative rascality! The action of the five legislators is an open invitation to anarchy.

“Furthermore, Mr. President must stop distancing himself from the matter, because whether he likes it or not, he is vicariously involved in it. The directly involvement of the First Lady in the matter, which she publicly admitted to when sixteen (16) Bishops from the South-South paid her a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa last week, implies Mr. President’s tacit involvement in it. Therefore, Mr. President cannot continue to feign ignorance or indifference on this very sensitive matter.

“We must bear in mind that the situation in Rivers State depicts a huge threat to the security of the state and by extrapolation, the entire nation. The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi has since made public, his own feelings of insecurity. There were reports last week of the deployment of policemen to the Rivers State Government House and the Rivers State Liaison Office in Abuja respectively, without the knowledge and approval of the State Governor. That action by the police authorities is highly condemnable.

“Mr. President should not forget that his cardinal responsibility to the state and its citizens is the provision of security for human lives and properties. This includes the lives of state governors and other high-profile individuals. Governor Amaechi has publicly declared that he is not comfortable with the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu. We wonder why the Inspector General of Police is reluctant to redeploy Mr. Mbu from the state. Mbu clearly gave clue in an interview with a national television station that he works at cross-purposes with Governor Amaechi.

“We recall that Amaechi first notified Mbu of the crisis at the Rivers State House of Assembly, long before it degenerated. But rather than take proactive actions in line with the governor’s notice, Mr. Mbu, who was said to be living very close to the Rivers State House of Assembly, deliberately refrained from acting on the governor’s information. The Rivers State Commissioner of Police is answerable to the Inspector General of Police, who is in turn, answerable to Mr. President. Therefore Mr. President’s thumbprint is firmly embedded in the ongoing crisis in Rivers State.

“Therefore we wish to condemn in strong terms, the attack by sponsored miscreants on the convoy of Governor Rotimi Amaechi and the four northern governors that paid him a visit last week. We view the action of those miscreants as dastardly and uncivilized. However, we must remind their sponsors that anyone who rides on the back of a tiger would end up in its belly! If the convoy of governors can be attacked publicly with such impunity, then even the convoy of Mr. President may not be insulated from such attack!

“NANS is of the view that the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who is clearly acting the script of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, should call himself to order immediately! He seeks the reinstatement of the Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, who was earlier sacked by Governor Amaechi.

“Nigeria is operating a federal system, in which every federating unit is expected to operate within the ambits of its constitutional powers.  The issue of Local Governments falls within the purview of the relevant state governments.

“Dame Patience Jonathan and Mr. Nyesom Wike should therefore hands-off the administration of Rivers State and allow Governor Amaechi to perform his constitutional obligations. If they wish to wrestle power from Amaechi, they should do so by the instrumentality of the ballot or other democratic instruments, not to resort to lawlessness in order to make Rivers ungovernable for Amaechi.

“President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan should know that the patience of the average Nigerian is already far-stretched. With the tension in the polity caused by the state of insecurity among other frustrating issues, the nation may well be sitting on a keg of gunpowder! This situation should not be aggravated by allowing lawlessness to permeate the polity. The Rivers State crisis therefore calls for decisive action on the part of Mr. President.

“NANS hereby declares a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria and all its relevant organs, to resolve the crisis in Rivers State. Failure to heed this ultimatum, NANS shall be left with no option than to convene its next Senate Meeting at Port Harcourt, where it shall take a more decisive position and line of action on the Rivers State crisis.

“For the benefit of foresight, the line of action may include taking over the city of Abuja and paralyzing all economic, social and political activities in the nation’s capital. Enough is enough”!

Read Time:52 Second

LAGOS—President of the Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria, AISSON, Dr. Ona Ekhomu has applauded the conviction and sentencing of four members of the Boko Haram terrorist group for multiple bombings and killings in parts of the Federal Capital Territory and Suleja, Niger State between March and July 2011.

Acknowledging what he described as courage and wisdom of the Abuja Federal High Court Judge, Justice Bilikisu Aliyu, Ekhomu stated  that terror trial judgments should show the capacity of the judiciary to contribute in combating terrorism.

Speaking with Vanguard  in Lagos, he called for capital punishment for terrorist crimes, saying, “the life which they took from innocent victims must be avenged”, even as he called for severe and swift justice for terror suspects, pointing out that justice delayed was justice denied.

Describing terrorism as “mala in se” meaning the personification of evil, Ekhomu advised Nigerian jurists to rebuff attempts by some unscrupulous lawyers to frustrate or delay trials by raising endless frivolous motions.

Minister tasks broadband committee on 20% access

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 11 Second

The Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, has tasked the Presidential Committee on Broadband to ensure that Nigeria attains 80 percent of broadband access by 2018.

The minister gave the task yesterday, during the official inauguration of the committee in Abuja. She also tasked the committee to fix broadband access in the country to 20 percent by the year 2017.

Johnson said that the inauguration of the Broadband council represents an important milestone in the implementation of the national broadband plan.

The broadband council has a five year plan  to oversee the implementation of the plan and the goal of the broadband plan is to have pervasive mobile broadband access to 80 percent of the population and fix broadband access to roughly 20 percent by the year 2017.

“With this goal in mind, I have no doubt that with the credibility and the composition of the nominees to this Council and working close with the ministry, can achieve the object of the broadband plan and look forward to work with you on the delivery of these objectives,” she said.

It will be recalled that the national broadband plan was presented to President Goodluck Jonathan for his approval on May 30th 2013.

In his remarks after the plan was presented to him, the President then, emphasized that broadband is to the digital age what electricity was to industrial age and that while African countries seemed to have missed out of the industrialization age, they could not afford to miss out of the digital age and  therefore  welcomed the national broadband plan.

He reiterated that that the plan must be implemented, adding that the benefits of the plan that were articulated inside it were also important for Nigeria.

The role of council is to ensure that Nigeria not only have a well-articulated plan, but also a well-executed plan as well.

The terms of reference for the committee includes: providing periodic progress report on the evaluation of the plan, facilitating the coordination and collaboration of the various stakeholders during plan implementation, ensuring that relevant agencies and institutions are actively engaged and monitoring the progress of the plan and highlighting adjustment areas if any.

The nomination to the council according to the minister, took a very careful process to select the individuals that were drawn into the council.

In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of the Engr. Ndukwe commended the federal government for taking up the task of ensuring broadband services across Nigeria and also tanked the minister for her vision and the speed at which the ministry is pursuing the plan.

World gets first glimpse of Kate and William’s royal baby boy

0 0
Read Time:7 Minute, 18 Second

London  — The public got its first view of the new heir to the British throne Tuesday as Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, left a London hospital hospital with their newborn son.

"It's very special," said William, who emerged from St. Mary's Hospital with his wife a day after the birth of their still-unnamed son. Catherine held the child, wrapped in a cream-colored blanket, as the couple waved to well-wishers outside.

"He's got her looks, thankfully," the prince added.

The couple left the hospital Tuesday evening with William carrying the boy out in a car seat and installing him in the back of a black SUV for the trip to Kensington Palace.

"Their Royal Highnesses would like to reiterate their thanks to the hospital for the care and treatment they have all received," a statement from the palace read.

The boy was born at 4:24 p.m. Monday, weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. The new parents remained in the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in London overnight.

William's father, Prince Charles, came to the hospital for a brief visit with his first grandchild Tuesday evening, accompanied by his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. He told reporters it was "marvelous."

Catherine's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, visited earlier, with Carole Middleton telling reporters the royal baby is "absolutely beautiful."

She said both mother and baby are doing "really well" and that she and her husband were "so thrilled" at being grandparents.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said: "Mother, son and father are all doing well this morning." Queen Elizabeth II's gynecologist, Marcus Setchell, is at the hospital carrying out medical assessments of Catherine following the birth, the palace said earlier.

Bells, gun salutes

Meanwhile, guardsmen at Buckingham Palace, the queen's residence, played the Cliff Richard song "Congratulations" to mark the birth of the royal baby at the Changing of the Guard. The military ceremony, much beloved of tourists, involves a new guard exchanging duty with the old guard in the palace forecourt.

Crowds were gathered again outside Buckingham Palace, a day after they thronged there to see the formal notice announcing the baby's birth.

Multigun salutes were also staged Tuesday afternoon to welcome the new royal heir. The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Green Park released 41 rounds, while the Honorable Artillery Company at the Tower of London fired 62 rounds.

At the same time the bells of Westminster Abbey, where William and Kate were married in April 2011, began to peal, in keeping with royal tradition, and were set to continue for more than three hours.

The news of the boy's birth, announced about four hours after the event Monday, prompted cheers and celebrations among the crowds of well-wishers outside Buckingham Palace. At least one group of well-wishers brought flowers, champagne and a card for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Photos: Reaction to royal baby

Social media networks were also abuzz with the news, which made headlines around the world.

'We could not be happier'

The new parents spent some time with their baby before calling family members — starting with the queen — to announce the birth, a Kensington Palace source told CNN royal correspondent Max Foster.

"We could not be happier," said Prince William, according to the Kensington Palace source.

Prince William remained at Catherine's side throughout the labor, and the baby was born naturally. An official bulletin was placed on a gilded easel outside Buckingham Palace.

The celebrations for the arrival of the new prince — whose title will be His Royal Highness Prince (the baby's name) of Cambridge — were hard to miss in the capital.

The fountains at Trafalgar Square were dyed blue; the BT Tower, a London landmark, flashed the words "It's a boy;" and the London Eye was illuminated in patriotic red, white and blue.

Further afield, Canada — where the British monarch is head of state — turned its side of the Niagara Falls blue to mark the birth, and the CN Tower in Toronto was lit up the same color.

Betting on a name

It was a long wait for the media camped outside St. Mary's Hospital, but when the news of the birth finally came, the excitement of the moment was huge.

The Sun newspaper, Britain's best-selling tabloid daily, changed its masthead Tuesday to "The Son" to mark the occasion, above a picture of the official birth announcement, while the Daily Express and Telegraph emblazoned "It's a boy" across their front pages.

Recognizing that excitement over the prince's arrival is not universal, the Guardian newspaper's website lets users switch to a royal baby-free version of the home page. The front page of UK satirical magazine Private Eye simply says: "Woman has baby."

What will royal baby's name be?

Many bets are being placed as the wait continues for the baby's name to be announced. British bookmakers Ladbrokes have James as favorite, followed by Henry and George, Philip, Alexander and Richard.

The baby's name may be announced when the family leaves the hospital, CNN's Foster reported. William's name was announced a few days after birth, his brother Harry's on departure from hospital.

Some British parents have delayed naming their newborns in recent days in hopes of either copying or avoiding the royal name, he said.

The baby is third in line for the throne now occupied by the queen. Her son, Charles, will succeed her, followed by his son, William.

Royal joy

Members of the royal family expressed their happiness at the safe delivery.

"Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine, and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy," Prince Charles and wife Camilla said in a statement.

The official British Monarchy Twitter feed said: "The Queen and Prince Philip are delighted at the news of the birth of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's baby."

Charles Spencer, brother to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, welcomed the birth of the baby. "We're all so pleased: it's wonderful news," he said in a statement.

"My father always told us how Diana was born on just such a blisteringly hot day, at Sandringham, in July 1961. It's another very happy summer's day, half a century on."

British Prime Minister David Cameron said, "It is an important moment in the life of our nation, but I suppose above all, it's a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who got a brand new baby boy."

Tributes around the world

Thanks to a change agreed by the leaders of the Commonwealth countries in 2011 and passed into law this year, the baby's place in the order of succession would have been the same regardless of gender. Previously, boys automatically trumped female siblings, so a first-born daughter could be pushed out of line by a younger brother.

The British monarch is also head of state in 15 Commonwealth countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Belize and Jamaica.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered his country's congratulations on the birth of a future king.

"The arrival of the newest member of the Royal Family, a future Sovereign of Canada, is a highly anticipated moment for Canadians given the special and warm relationship that we share with our Royal Family," he said in a statement.

Barack and Michelle Obama also gave their best wishes.

"The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations," the president and first lady said in a statement. "Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince."

Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also sent their congratulations.

On Twitter, topics related to the royal baby jumped to the top of the trending list in the United Kingdom on Monday morning. Worldwide, hashtags such as #RoyalBabyBoy and #Will & Kate were trending later Monday.

Cory Monteith’s death underscores heroin’s resurgence

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 20 Second
Glee actor Cory Monteith's death from a combination of heroin and alcohol underscores alarming increases in heroin overdose deaths that may be fueled by growing addictions to prescription painkillers.

Monteith, who died July 13 in Vancouver, publicly spoke of his struggles with addiction and in April had checked himself into drug treatment. He did not specific the drugs he used, but experts are seeing an uptick of heroin use — and overdoses — as people addicted to opioid painkillers, such as oxycodone, reach for heroin when pills become hard to get.

"The United States has seen a spike in new initiates of heroin abuse," Michele Leonhart, head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, told Congress in April.

Police nationwide report to DEA that young adults who are addicted to the prescription painkillers turn to cheaper heroin when they can't afford or can't find the pills, Leonhart said. Pharmaceutical companies have been reformulating pills so they can't be crushed, and a growing number of states have been cracking down on doctors and pharmacies that improperly distribute the painkillers.

Prescription painkillers are among the most commonly abused drugs in the United States and have similar effects to heroin. Recent research suggests that painkiller abuse can lead to heroin abuse. Nearly half of teens and young adults surveyed who inject heroin reported that they previously abused prescription painkillers, the National Institute on Drug Abuse said.

STORY: Overdose risk higher after rehab

After years of stability, heroin overdoses, many in combination with prescription painkillers, jumped in 2007, says Christopher M. Jones, a health scientist at the injury center at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From 1999 to 2006, 1,800 to 2,200 people died each year from heroin overdoses. Between 2007 and 2010, the number of deaths jumped to more than 3,000 annually. Early data from states indicates the trend will continue, he said.

"The heroin goes hand in hand with prescription opioids," Jones said.

A 2011 survey found 4.2 million Americans age 12 or older reported they had used heroin at least once in their lives. Nearly a quarter of those who use heroin become addicted to it, the Institute said.

The Community Epidemiology Work Group, a network of researchers from major metropolitan areas who report epidemiological drug abuse trends to the National Institutes of Health, noted in their report last year that heroin abuse was growing in Boston, Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Minneapolis, San Diego, Seattle and Texas.

The researchers also found growing numbers of young people seeking treatment for heroin addictions. In Denver, people younger than 25 accounted for 28% of all admissions for heroin treatment in 2011, up from 13% in 2007.

Michelle Nunn engages battle for Senate in Georgia

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 9 Second
Democrats and Republicans envision a competitive race in 2014 that could help decide who holds power in the U.S. Senate.

Democrats currently have a 54-46 voting advantage in the Senate and Republicans are already eyeing possible pickups in West Virginia, South Dakota and Montana, where the Democratic incumbents are not seeking re-election next year.

"Michelle Nunn makes this race competitive," said Merle Black, a political scientist at Emory University. "She has no experience but she has a great name. She clearly will be able to unify the Georgia Democratic Party and she'll be able to raise a tremendous amount of money."

Branko Radulovacki, an Atlanta physician, is also running for the Democratic nomination but party stalwarts are expected to line up behind Nunn.

Nunn told the Associated Press that she wants to get things working in the Senate. She pointed to her work as CEO of Points of Light, an organization founded by former president George H.W. Bush, as an example of how she can work across party lines.

"Wherever I go in Georgia people speak of their frustrations with what's not happening in Washington, that there is a focus on fighting instead of getting things done," Nunn told the AP. "I believe in the power of individuals to create change when they join together."

No Democrat currently holds a statewide elected office in Georgia and Sam Nunn was last on the ballot in 1990. President Obama lost to Mitt Romney last year in Southern states such as Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi, but had his best showing among them in Georgia, where he garnered 45%.

A divisive Republican primary could help the Democrats. Black noted that GOP Reps. Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey could have a tougher time raising money for a competitive general election race than Rep. Jack Kingston or former Georgia secretary of state Karen Handel, who forced a GOP runoff for governor in 2010. Broun and Gingrey have attracted attention in the past for some of their controversial comments about evolution and rape, respectively.

"The Republican primary has increasingly become a right-wing circus that will produce a flawed candidate like Todd Akin," said Justin Barasky, a spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Akin is the Senate GOP nominee in Missouri who lost a race last year in large part due because of his comments about "legitimate rape."

Barasky said Nunn's background as a chief executive and her career devoted to service will appeal to voters across party lines, as well has her long history working with the Bush family.

Black said Nunn and the Democratic Party will have to be ready for Republican charges that she is "a liberal Obama-Pelosi Democrat," a charge that stuck in the special election for Congress earlier this year against Elizabeth Colbert Busch in South Carolina. Like Nunn, Colbert Busch had a famous name — her brother is comedian Stephen Colbert — but was largely unknown by voters. Republican Mark Sanford won the election.

The Georgia Republican Party welcomed Nunn to the race on Tuesday with a news release that tied her to President Obama, calling him "your friend" in an open letter to the new Democratic candidate.

"Even though the general election is more than a year away, you can rest assure that the Georgia Republican Party will make your campaign for the United States Senate our priority, and we will work daily to remind Georgia voters how out-of-touch you and the Democratic Party are with their values and convictions," the Georgia GOP said.
