MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — An Islamist insurgent-run radio station in Somalia says it is awarding guns, bombs and books to three children in a Quran recital contest.

Andulus radio station is run by the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militia.

The station announced Monday that the first prize winner in the contest received a rifle and $700, the second prize winner got a rifle and $500, and the third prize winner received two bombs.

All three children also received religious books.

Al-Shabab is battling Somalia’s weak, U.N.-backed government. The militants have recently been weakened by famine in territory they control.

Like a moving train, ‘Mirror Boy’ records strings of achievements everywhere it went. In London it was the first African movie to premiere at the prestigious Empire Leicester Square which earned it tons of praise and achievements and placed the Nigerian movie industry on the world stage. In Ghana, ‘Mirror Boy’ reigned so well to become the highest selling movie ever in the Ghanaian cinemas. Now, only in the first week at the Nigerian Cinemas, Mirror Boy has made over N12 million in sales.

Earning such an amount would not come as a surprise, as the movie since its grand premiere at the Silverbird Galleria on August 5, 2011, has garnered a lot of praise from the movie industry stake holders and movie lovers in general.

When asked to comment on the success of the Mirror Boy, producer Obi Emelonye said, ‘I am extremely glad. It is my desire that ‘Mirror Boy’ success in Nigeria surpasses the movie’s earlier successes because this is the homecoming of the movie. With ‘Mirror Boy’ I think we can further show the world that Nigeria is capable of making good movies’.

The film which was written, produced and directed by Obi Emelonye, is made up of a multi talented cast with the likes of Nigerian Genevieve Nnaji and Osita Iheme, The Gambia’s Fatima Jabbe, and Uganda’s Edward Kagutuzi. The movie revolves around the life of a 12 year old London born African boy Tijani who get sent back to his country of origin by his mother when he is involved in a street fight. Things take a dramatic turn when he gets lost in a crowded market in The Gambia after he witnesses an apparition in the mirror which leads him on a journey of self discovery through the forest and later re-emerges with a greater appreciation for his homeland and a better understanding of the relationship he has with the father he never met.

Following the tremendous success that the movie ‘Damage’ has been recording at the cinemas and the outpouring of accolades that it has received from movie lovers, the executive producer Uche Jombo has come out to say that she is proud at the turnout for ‘Damage’ at the cinemas.

‘Damage’ was premiered in Lagos on the 31st of July 2011 at the Silverbird Galleria amidst a constellation of stars and celebrities. It arrived in cinemas across Nigeria on August 5, 2011 and has since then been getting a lot of patronage from movie lovers across the federation.

Uche Jombo who also acted in the movie alongside Tonto Dike, Basorge Tariah Jr and Kalu Ikeagwu, were all in the Garden City of Port Harcourt for a meet and greet with fans which turned out to be an unforgettable occasion as the fans trooped out in large droves to interact with their favorite stars.

The movie ‘Damage’ presents the case of love and domestic violence in such a manner that has never been seen in a movie before. ‘Damage’ is about the story of a man (Kalu Ikeagwu) and his wife (Uche Jombo) who loves each other immensely, but their way of presenting this love to each other is by engaging in violent fights almost on a daily basis, and this has a serious psychological effect on their children.

When asked how she felt about her work, Uche Jombo stated, I am very proud of what we have achieved, there is no better word to describe how I feel when I see the turnout of people coming to watch the movie and am sure that all those involved in the production of the film would definitely feel the same way.

For Shuga band, it has been a year of roller-coaster success. From performing at the gigs of the high and mighty within and outside Nigeria, to being the choice band for the presidency, it has been one achievement after the other for the Akin Tofowomo-led band.
And just when we thought entertaining guests, dishing out tunes and consolidating its number one position will be all that Shuga band would do, the parent company, Shuga Entertainment sprang a surprise on us recently by establishing another subsidiary company, Sound Pro.

According to Bigsam Media, publicist to Shuga Entertainment, Sound Pro is not a deviation from Shuga Band; it is an act of reaching for depth and quality in the key areas of Shuga Band’s business; sound, stage and lighting. Its major operations include supplying sound equipments, hydraulic stages and lightings for different kinds of events from small to large capacity venues.

‘Sound Pro is in the market to meet a need and to give quality sound, stage and lighting at your budget. The strength of any performance lies in its output, which captures the mood for an event, says Akin Tofowomo’

Their services not only include the provision of sound and lighting equipment, but the provision of these equipments configured to the specification of the client. Be it for small, medium or large capacity events, Sound Pro is able to provide the right equipment and mood for the occasion.

Sound Pro also offers consultancy services; they offer advice on the choice of music for events, help in the installation and configuration of sound equipments, mixing of different sounds, sales of sound equipments and rentals of equipments.
