Mikel don’t deserve Nigeria No. 10 Jersey, says Etim Esin

Etim Esin has said the Super Eagles midfielder is not worthy of putting on the country's revered jersey number following his no show at the ongoing 2014 Fifa World Cup

Former Nigeria star Etim Esin has disclosed that Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel is not worthy of putting on the is not worthy wearing Nigeria's number 10 jersey following his below par outing at the ongoing 2014 Fifa World Cup.

Esin who wore the country's national team respected jersey number between 1988 and 1992 lambasted Mikel after his disappointing display that led to the country's exit in the round of 16 to France.

"Mikel was a big flop in Brazil. He wears Nigeria’s No.10 jersey but he did not show he is worthy of wearing it at the big stage like the World Cup,” Esin told NigeriaNewsWatch.

"He rose to the occasion in South Africa but in Brazil he was not committed and ended up as a monumental disaster.

"Look at how other players who wore No.10 jerseys for their respective countries have been playing including Messi, Neymar, Sneijder and the young chap from Colombia, James Rodriquez.

"He failed to carry Eagles along as the pilot of the team. Have you seen a No.10 that did not make a goal attempt let alone of scoring. Jokes apart, Mikel has not shown he deserves to wear our No.10 jersey."
He however called on the former Flying Eagles midfielder to improve his game and follow the path of the country's legends like Henry Nwosu and Austin Okocha who shone wearing the jersey number during their active days for Super Eagles.
"He should go and watch the video clips of Henry Nwosu and Jay Jay Okocha including my humble self and get some tutorials on how they played as Nigeria’s No.10. You must be special to wear the No.10 jersey and for me, has not done anything special.
"While Musa and Osaze were busy taking all the free kicks and corner kicks he was idle strolling in the pitch. As soon as Onazi was stretchered out, he was exposed.

"I don’t have anything against Mikel, when he came into limelight I was one of the first person that tipped him for greatness but I am amazed that he has yet to live up to expectations and I am highly disappointed.

“There is no doubt that he is a good player having shown his qualities in the past, but he has to raise his game at the moment considering the fact that he plays for a big club like Chelsea or else he would continue to warm their bench. I am giving him this advice for his own personal interest,” he concluded.

Neymar : For our sake, God, let Brazil win!

Brazil’s poster boy, Neymar, is out of the World Cup. The World Cup would not be the same again. And so, victory nearly turned to defeat. Agony. Pain. Many Brazilians cry as the news hit them.

None Brazilians joined in the pain of the nation. Yes, Neymar electrifies the World Cup for the hosts and brings so much joy that is shared to none Brazilians. The World Cup party starts from the numerous open festivals where thousands throng to watch Brazilian matches. And once victory comes to Brazil, then, the rhythm of the samba is ignited. Free drinks are served. The merriment spills over to the real Whore Cup.

Neymar

Where professionals are their own gate keepers. They admit fans of all colours and charge their gate takings based on the power of haggling.

The boom has been on and the pros have been considerate to reduce the prices, even offering free services as their contribution to a country that is drenched in celebration once they win. But not on Saturday when Brazil was well and truly in mourning when the news came through that Neymar had played his last World Cup match due to the injury inflicted by Juan Zuniga.

That injury is affecting many souls. It is affecting many businesses. The only way joy could be restored in the hidden homes where Policia keep an eagle on is if Brazil brave the odds and go past the German machines in the semi final. The whole country would burst loose in celebration. And the pros would open their legs, and hearts to celebrate.

Trusted Psychics or fortune makers?

What started with 32 countries have now boiled down to 4 teams. That means that 28 countries are home either watching and analyzing with their families or have gone on forced holidays to prepare for their clubs new season that hots up after the World Cup. Attention is also gradually shifting from the stadia to the fan fest parks or tourism centres in Brazil.

There is a beautiful park in Republica in Sao Paulo which has now become a hotbed of drug addicts, alcoholics and prostitutes including male prostitutes. A lady walked up to me speaking one of the best English I have ever heard since coming to Brazil. ‘’Hello! Please, come to our stand let us provide you with the most dependable and informative readings of your life and future”, she said turning around to lure me with her well-shaped body more than all the psychic nonsense of telling me my future.

I noticed that handful of crowds gathered in batches with either a woman draped with so many rings piercing her eyes and ears, looking frighteningly like Mammy water than a fortune teller. Here, they collect monies to help people unlock their future, unravel their inner thoughts, provide answers to your future and destiny and re-direct your paths and make you find a happier path you can follow.

And see swarm of boys and girls even men and women who are closer to their graves holding candles and listening attentively as one man or woman unlock their future. Beautiful girls and boys who have relationship issues shedding tears and rejoicing as their problems are solved.

The woman, tarot card reader claims she has a natural spiritual ability to change things. Many things were on my mind. Can she unlock the Boko Haram in my country, power outage, Mile 2 traffic? Can she re-direct my future to make me be like Dangote? Can she make me tall, dark and handsome to become an idol of many hearts? If she can make the impossible happen, why have they not turned their fortunes?

I Have Several Offers But It’s South Africa That Have Been Very Vocal About Their Offer-Stephen Okechukwu Keshi Speaks On His Future

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 5 Second

As his future continues to linger .Sl10  caught up with Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi. The former Super Eagles coach spoke about his future with Nigeria, the World Cup, contract offers from other countries and so much more. Enjoy.

SL10: Coach, welcome from Brazil. You finally got the experience of coaching at the World Cup, kindly share the experience with us.

KESHI: Well, it was a good experience that I cherish. It was a good experience for us all, the players, coaches and other staff of the team. It was a nice experience and we experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly.

SL10: So talking about the good, what exactly were they and how do they make you feel?
KESHI: I feel good about the good aspect of the World Cup. And what I mean is the potential in the team that I believe will come really good within the next couple of years. I think they will have a team that will make Nigerians proud and that is if they keep the current crop of players in place and make a very good environment for them. Like I said, I see lots of potential in the team and with the addition of some very good players as well, I believe Nigeria will have a very good team pretty soon.

SL10: That game against France got a lot of people talking and given how it eventually ended, do you think Nigeria would have won it on another day?

KESHI: Yes I think so, especially if the referee had allowed Emenike’s goal to stand. That goal would have lifted the spirits of the players and spurred them on. I thought that goal would have sealed the game but we also have to understand that a lot of the players are quite young and only just played at their first World Cup. And in such cases, you need leaders to push them forward and guide them. So yes, I believe Nigeria would have won that game on another day.

SL10: Coach, you keep mentioning the word ‘them’, does this mean you’re truly leaving because it is being reported that the Nigeria Football Federation already offered you a two year contract?

KESHI: No I haven’t spoken to anyone at the Federation, and I don’t know where such reports are emanating from. Nobody has offered me any contract, I haven’t spoken to anybody, so it’s just the way it is. I have no idea where all these are coming from because I’m even just hearing such for the first time.

SL10: You visited the sports minister, what was the visit about and did you discuss?
KESHI: Oh no, it was nothing, I just went to see him. He’s a friend, and he invited me over to his office so that’s why I went to see him, nothing more. So that’s it, it was just a visit.

SL10: If given a contract offer now, would you be staying?
KESHI: Well I couldn’t say, because a contract is supposed to be between two parties or more. So it’s not like I’ll just sign anything in the name of a contract if offered to me. It has to be suitable and mutually beneficial to both parties. If the offer comes, we will sit down and talk and if there’s something concrete, then we’ll see how it goes.

SL10: So in that case, what exactly do you expect in a new contract offer?
KESHI: Well for starters, my previous contract was never respected isn’t good. Whatever trips I took to visit my family in America, I always paid for which ran contrary to the contract agreement. I was paying one of my assistants (Valere Houandonou) for over a year, my former assistant Sylvanus Okpala was sacked without my consent and those things just never made sense. I mean Nigeria is my country and I love my country, but I’m out of contract now so I have to move on. I have spent over two years as coach of Nigeria, and Nigeria flows in my veins but I just have to move on.

SL10: So does this mean you’re heading to South Africa given their interest…(cuts in)
KESHI: No it’s not just South Africa. I have several offers but it’s South Africa that have been very vocal about their offer, so that’s the way it is.

SL10: So if you get offers from these countries you’re talking about, and also an offer from Nigeria, would you give that special consideration to Nigeria?
KESHI: Well if the Nigeria Football Federation and I agree, why not? There’s a project I’ve started in Nigeria that I would love to finish. So yes, that consideration will be given but if the offer isn’t good enough for me, then I will explore other options and possibly move on to another challenge. It’s always a good thing when you experience other climates.

SL10: Speaking from the heart, do you still really want to continue with the Super Eagles project?
KESHI: Well this isn’t about ‘heart’ anymore. I’ve given my heart to Nigeria, I have done it for the country for years. I played as a captain of the national team for 14years so this isn’t about heart anymore. It’s now about professionalism, I am a professional football coach and that is all I do. I have kids in the university that I have to feed and I can’t do that by ‘heart’. Doing the ‘heart’ thing cannot work anymore, because that isn’t going to put food on my table (laughs).

Brazil, Germany march on at World Cup

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 3 Second

FORTALEZA (AFP) – Brazil defeated Colombia 2-1 and Germany beat France 1-0 in the World Cup quarter-finals on Friday to set up a heavyweight semi-final showdown.

An early goal from Brazil skipper Thiago Silva and a stunning free-kick from David Luiz was enough to give the World Cup hosts victory over Colombia in a niggly last eight meeting in Fortaleza.

Colombia’s star James Rodriguez left the field in tears after his sixth goal of the tournament, an 80th-minute penalty, was not enough to prevent Brazil from advancing to Tuesday’s semi-final in Belo Horizonte.

The victory came at a cost for Brazil, though, with captain Silva picking up a yellow card which will see him suspended for the clash with the Germans.

Star striker Neymar was also stretchered from the pitch late in the game, potentially creating a problem for Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Television station Globo reported that he had been taken to hospital to undergo tests.
Silva had earlier settled Brazilian nerves, punishing slack Colombian marking at a corner to tap home after only seven minutes.

Luiz struck an astonishing 69th-minute free-kick to put Brazil 2-0 up before Colombia fought back.

Rodriguez, the outstanding player of the tournament so far, scored a penalty to make it 2-1 after Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar brought down Carlos Bacca.

But Colombia were unable to find the equaliser to force extra-time as Brazil advanced to the last four.

Brazil’s semi-final will see them play Germany in a repeat of the 2002 World Cup final won 2-0 by the South Americans.

It will be only the second time Brazil has met Germany at a World Cup.
Germany reached the semi-finals for a record fourth straight time earlier Friday after a header from Mats Hummels helped beat France 1-0 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Borussia Dortmund defender Hummels rose to head home Toni Kroos’s free-kick on 13 minutes to settle a cagey encounter.

“The next dream has come true,” said man-of-the-match Hummels.
“It’s unbelievable that it’s all going so well for us here at the World Cup.

“I hope that our journey won’t end soon and that we can make it back to compete here week next Sunday,” he added, referring to the July 13 final.

France coach Didier Deschamps bemoaned his team’s failure to capitalise on the handful of chances they created.

“There was not much between the sides,” Deschamps said. “One team is more used to these occasions and has more experience.

“We were not clinical in front of goal.”
France had entered the match quietly confident of avenging semi-final defeats against Germany in 1982 and 1986.

But they were left to rue a lacklustre first half performance which saw Germany dominate in sweltering conditions.

France rallied in the second half and Hummels saved Germany with a desperate late block of a Karim Benzema shot shortly before Manuel Neuer parried a firm strike from Blaise Matuidi.

Andre Schuerrle should have sealed victory in the closing minutes, but with the goal gaping, struck his shot from Mesut Ozil’s low cross directly at Hugo Lloris in the French goal.

There was still time for Neuer to save Germany at the death, pulling off a brilliant block from Benzema just seconds from the final whistle.
The quarter-final drama continues Saturday when the Netherlands play Costa Rica and Belgium take on Argentina.

worldcup: Musa, Emenike ‘ll knock out France — Keshi

0 0
Read Time:57 Second

Many out here in Brazil feel that the French national team have good players who can run down Nigeria when the two countries face each other in the second round of the World Cup on Monday.

Karim Benzema has been touted as the portent striker that would cause trouble for the Super Eagles who rattled Argentina before going down 3 -2.

Stephen Keshi was asked what he thought about the probability of Nigeria facing Karim Benzema. He replied quick as a flash: “And France will be facing Musa, Emenike … ”

There are reasons to be confident after a performance in which Eagles caused problems for Argentina and showed that on a good day, the African champions are as good as any of the teams to go all the way.

“All the teams are good. It doesn’t matter [who you face],” Keshi noted. “You have to appreciate that. It is only Nigeria that don’t appreciate that. Nigerians always think that every team we face we have to kill them 5-0, 10-0. It doesn’t work that way.”

He poured praises on Argentina skipper, Lionel Messi. “Messi is a great player, I have played against him twice and in my opinion he is really something special. We lost against Argentina, but I thought we did well and were a little unlucky.”

World Cup 2014 musings

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 21 Second

Messi leads the way

His name was ringing out into the darkness on the long road home to Uruguaiana, on the Argentine border, and well beyond, last night. Lionel Messi’s compatriots had made the 11-hour trek by road to belong to this World Cup campaign in some small way, and for the tens of thousands who did not even step inside the stadium, the journey was worth it because of him.

His relationship with his country has been a complicated one, ever since he left for Spain on an Aerolineas Argentinas jet as a 13-year-old.

The Buenos Aires locals expect their nation’s stars to play for one of the city’s clubs before they leave. But in one hour of football Messi added to the real notion that this tournament will all boil down to a two-man shoot-out between Neymar and him. Single-handedly, the Barcelona men have borne their countries into the second round. They have both scored four goals at this World Cup.

The Brazilians are ready for that match-up. Though the affection for Messi is something of a guilty secret in Sao Paulo, where shirts bearing his name are seen in a way that the detested Diego Maradona’s never were, Brazil feels its totemic player is the more complete of the two. But the Argentine is playing with an ease, conviction and a broad smile on his face. It will take something special to stop him travelling all the way to the Maracana on July 13. Another absorbing test of Louis van Gaal’s quality may lie ahead, when the Dutch are scheduled to meet the resurgent force of nature in a semi-final.

The suspicion remains, as it has throughout these past three weeks, that flaws exist around him. None in blue and white could hold a candle to his presence. No other member of the so-called ‘fantastic four – Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria – has found the net in this competition. The defence looked suspect. But the performance suggested that this nation is ready to unfurl itself on the knock-out stage, for all that.

Keshi keeps mum

over Suarez’s biting

As the world awaits the outcome of investigations
into the alleged biting incident involving Uruguay’s Luis Suarez, coach Stephen Keshi stayed out of the controversy when asked his opinion on the matter.

He looked round and asked back ‘’Did it happen? Are you sure it happened?. I don’t know. Please, no comment on that”, he said. Help also came his way from the FIFA official at the post match conference who informed the media to restrict their questions on the Nigeria and Argentina match.

FIFA investigates

Neymar’s underpants

FIFA has reportedly launched an investigation into
Neymar’s underpants.

If there’s one thing that the governing body cares above all else, it’s the protection of its high-paying sponsors’ exclusivity. The rule ensures players don’t have underpants made by non-FIFA sponsors peeking out of their shorts.

The underwear alarm went off at FIFA headquarters when Neymar’s were partially exposed after he swapped shirts following Brazil’s 4-1 win over Cameroon. And if you think that this is all a big joke, consider that Denmark’s Nicklas Bendtner was fined €100,000 ($125,797) by UEFA (European football’s governing body) when he celebrated a goal by lifting up his shirt to reveal the name of a betting firm on the waistband of his underpants at Euro 2012. This isn’t the first time Neymar’s underwear has raised concerns from the football brand police. When a similar situation occurred while he played in a Champions League match for Barcelona two months ago, his press agent had to deny that it was an intentional marketing strategy.

Nigeria won’t be easy to beat — France coach

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 28 Second

France coach, Didier Deschamps does not believe his side will have an easy time when they meet Nigeria in the round of 16 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil.

The Super Eagles go head-to-head against Les Blues on Monday with bookmakers seemingly unanimous that the French would be too strong for the African champions.

Deschamps, a World Cup winner in 1998, however does not share that opinion and does not think a win over the Super Eagles will be an easy one.

“Some people thought we were the kings of the world after beating Switzerland 5-2 but Ecuador showed they have qualities, and Argentina had a difficult match against Nigeria.

“Nigeria are a strong, fast team who have great qualities and it is going to be a really difficult match and we will have to fight,” Deschamps said in his post-match press conference after Les Blues drew their final preliminary game 0-0 against Ecuador on Wednesday.

France struggled to break down the well-drilled Ecuador side at the Estádio do Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro with many questioning Deschamps’ decision to ring several changes in his squad.

The former France captain however defended his decision and added that he was confident his charges  will play better against Nigeria.

“My team selection was not by chance and it’s important that all players get into the rhythm. Now we have five days to prepare for our game against Nigeria.

“They had a team with 10 players in front of us defending well. We had an enormous number of chances and we are disappointed we were not as effective as in our previous matches,” he said.

We must beat Nigeria — Benzema

0 0
Read Time:54 Second

France top striker, Karim Benzema has warned his French squad to get serious for a tough encounter with the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the second round of the World Cup insisting that they must do everything to beat the African champions.

Still savouring topping their group with seven points with the Real Madrid forward scoring three times, Benzema said that there are no pushovers again in the World Cup.

France finished top of their group with 7 points with the Real Madrid forward scoring three times. Their reward is a clash with Nigeria in the Round of 16 and Benzema said the Super Eagles would be no pushovers.

“ There are no easy opponents, we saw this against Ecuador. Now we must rest, recover well and get 100% for the knockout. Nigeria is a good team, it will be difficult but we must do everything to win”, he said.
The sides have only met once previously in an international friendly back in 2009.  Les Bleus lost 1-0 in Saint-Etienne to a Joseph Akpala strike.
