Suarez is a relapsed ‘cokehead’—Psychiatrist

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has had all kinds of labels thrust upon since the game with Italy but ‘cokehead’ is probably one of the more severe. Dutch newspaper AD are one of many media outlets who have drafted in a psychiatrist to explain the actions of Liverpool’s star player.

That man is called Bram Bakker and he reckons that what Suarez did was like a drug addict staying off their addiction for a while and then relapsing, he thinks Suarez needs professional help.

“It is a short circuit. Someone who can’t control when the pressure is large. It struck me that immediately after that action there was a despondent impression. Repentant, like a cokehead who for months has been clean and then made a mistake.”

Bakker thinks that if Suarez only demonstrates this kind of behaviour on the pitch then it can be treated with behavioural therapy. However, if the Liverpool player ‘short circuits’ in situations in his general life then it’s all the more worrying for Suarez and would present a more serious issue.

Musa: I’m on top of the World

NOT only did he score two goals in a match in the World Cup, he also scored what has become Nigeria’s fastest goal in the country’s World Cup history, and also against a crack Argentinian team.

Ahmed Musa said he felt on top of the World yesterday scoring two goals in a match sharing the spoils with world’s most dreaded player, Messi. ‘’I feel so happy scoring two goals against a Messi-inspired team.

Above all, I am happier that we have qualified for the second round. We are going to improve more in the second round. I know that it is not easy. But we are determined to do better than we did in previous World Cup’, an overwhelmed Musa said moments after the World Cup match.

Argentina beat Nigeria 3-2 to finish top of group, Nigeria qualify

A double from Lionel Messi a day after his 27th birthday inspired Argentina to a 3-2 win over African champions Nigeria and assured them of finishing top of Group F at the World Cup finals on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s defeat — their fourth in four meetings at the finals against Argentina — came with the considerable consolation that they still progressed to the second round as Iran lost 3-1 to Bosnia-Hercegovina in the other group game.

Messi’s double — including a sublime freekick — and Marcus Rojo’s goal saw the Argentinians to the three points while Ahmed Musa scored a brace for the Nigerians.

Argentina — who have not won the trophy since 1986 — will play the runners-up of Group E next Tuesday while Nigeria play the group winners, who will probably be France.

FIFA WORLDCUP 2014: Bosnia defeat sends Iran crashing at World Cup

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 29 Second

SALVADOR  (AFP) – Edin Dzeko weighed in with a first-half goal as Bosnia-Hercegovina knocked Iran out of the World Cup with a 3-1 win in Salvador on Wednesday.

Iran had needed to beat Bosnia and hope Nigeria lost to Argentina to keep alive faint hopes of reaching the last 16, but Carlos Queiroz’s side came up well short in the Group F clash.

A powerful strike by Manchester City star Dzeko gave Bosnia an early lead before Miralem Pjanic added a second just before the hour to settle a relatively dull affair at Salvador’s Arena Fonte Nova.

The game burst into life in the final minutes as Iran striker Reza Ghoochannejad netted his side’s first goal of Brazil 2014, but Bosnia replied immediately with an Avdija Vrsajevic goal.

The result confirmed both teams’ exit as Argentina and Nigeria reached the knock-out stages by finishing first and second respectively in the table after the Argentinians’ 3-2 win in Porto Alegre.

Bosnia, whose elimination had already been confirmed prior to the game, are left to rue what might have been after refereeing mistakes contributed to their 1-0 defeat to Nigeria in their previous match.

Safet Susic’s side ended on a high to claim third and leave Iran bottom of the group with a single point from their draw with Nigeria.

Salvador has now seen 21 World Cup goals in four group games after the Netherlands destroyed Spain 5-1, Germany thumped Portugal 4-0 and France dominated Switzerland 5-2 with a last 16 match and quarter-final still to come in the stadium.

Dzeko had the best of the early chances when he fired over after a powerful run into the area, then headed straight at Iran goalkeeper Alireza Haghighi.

His much-threatened goal arrived on 23 minutes when Dzeko unleashed a fierce drive into the bottom right-hand corner past two defenders, which gave Haghighi no chance.

Iran almost hit back immediately as midfielder Masoud Shojaei clattered the crossbar.

But for all of Iran’s attacking efforts, Bosnia’s Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Bgeovic was solid between the posts, especially from crosses.

With his side 1-0 down at the break, Iran’s Queiroz brought on experienced forward Khosro Heydari to boost their attack.

But Bosnia grabbed the goal which killed off Iran’s hopes from a defensive error.

A poorly timed pass out of the Iran defence was snapped up by Tino-Sven Susic who fed Pjanic and the Roma midfielder drilled his shot home on 59 minutes.

Charlton Athletic striker Ghoochannejad finally got Iran’s first Brazil 2014 goal when he converted a cross eight minutes from time, although replays suggested he was offside.

Bosnia responded immediately to snuff out any hopes of a fight back as right-back Vrsajevic smashed home his shot after a charging run down the right flank.

Ex-Flying Eagles boss applauds Nigeria’s performance against Argentina

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 6 Second

Abuja –  Ladan Bosso, a former coach of the Flying Eagles, on Wednesday, applauded the performance of the Super Eagles in their World Cup last Group F match against Argentina.

The Eagles lost 2-3 to the Argentines in the game after initially playing goalless with Iran and defeating Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0.

Bosso said the courage of the players and their quick response to the Argentine goals was typical of the Super Eagles squad.

“We thank God that we eventually got what we are looking for at least the regular super star countries are out and Nigeria is still in.

“I believe the team will do better in the next match; what they played today is better than what they played against Bosnia and Iran,’’ Bosso said.

He noted that the groups F match between Bosnia-Herzegovina drew a lot of attention from FIFA following the concerns raised by the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) of a possible match-fixing.

The coach pointed out that 3-1 defeat of Iran had played a major role in the Eagles progression to the next stage.

Bosso, who is the current coach of Abia Warriors FC of Umuahia, charged the team to improve on its scoring chances, noting that the team missed lots of chances.

He noted that the team would overrun its second round opponent if the strikers become more aggressive in the attack.

“The most difficult thing in football is the creation of chances; so, the players should be able to convert chances as they create them.

“If we are going to attack, we should attack together and if we are going to defend, we should defend together; that was what we lacked in our first match.

“The chain of attacking was not there and the chain of defending was not there but if the team can improve on these strategies, the team can go places,’’ he added.

The former national team coach also commended Joseph Yobo, the team’s captain for his 100 caps record for the senior national team.

He added that it would serve as motivation as they progressed to the next stage.

According to Bosso, it is not easy to lead a team to the World Cup and the team is not doing badly; so, all they need is the support to succeed.

He urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the team as they were likely to face France in the second round of the competition.

FIFA WORLDCUP 2014: We gave too much respect to Argentina – Keshi

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 2 Second

Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi reviewed the 3-2 loss to Argentina in their last group match that saw them qualifying to the second round of the World Cup, saying that Nigeria gave Argentina too much respect.

‘’I think that we gave Argentina too much respect in the first half. That is why we played deep not trying to concede goals. It is not in our character to play defensive game.

We are known for attacking football like Argentina. But that changed in the second half and we took control of the game and the possession.

I think that the game was good with my players improving in all games

Messi is from Jupiter

Stephen Keshi also poured encomiums on Argentine player Lionel Messi .

Despite the loss, Nigeria finished second behind Argentina and moved into the second round to face France.

Asked if his team played against Argentina or Messi, he laughed and said; ‘’Messi is a blessing to football. You can’t take it away from him.

There are other talented players in the Argentine team but I think that Messi is from another planet. Messi is from Jupiter”, he said causing an uproar of laughter from the media.

WORLDCUP 2014: Gallant Eagles qualify for 2nd round

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 21 Second

First was the atmosphere at the magnificent Estadio Beira Rio, Porto Alegre.

Any Brazilian asked who, between Nigeria and Argentina, he will easily say Nigeria.

The rivalry between Argentina and Brazil is bitter and has been on for long. Brazilians would always be happy to see Argentina fall and vice versa. And Brazilians wished the Eagles well yesterday. But they were very few in the stadium. Argentines took over the stadium.

They sang, danced and cheered. Their cheers were deafening. It was simply amazing. Eagles had to be strong to survive the play of the Argentines and the overwhelming crowd. That their team had won two matches and qualified did not matter to them. What mattered was victory.

Stephen Keshi had lined out the same team that started the match against Bosnia, respecting the saying that you don’t change a winning team.

The game started with Argentina showing no sign of relaxation as a team that had already won two matches and qualified. Inspired by the charged atmosphere, they charged on the Eagles and scored in the third minute. Ambrsoe Efe was missing in his right back position after running forward. Angel Di Maria exploited the space Efe provided him and ran deep before hitting a shot that Vincent Enyeama parried. It hit the post and the rebound Lionel Messi clinically finished up.

The Argentines were still celebrating the goal when Michael Babatunde ran deed and provided a pass to the left for Ahmed Musa who cut in and curved the ball into the net for Nigeria’s equaliser.

Eagles thereafter enjoyed some reprieve but Argentina continued to push forward, creating chances and taking shots that harassed the Eagles defence. Enyeama had to save two long range shots and showed how reliable he could be.

But Argentina appeared to be capitalising on the slow game John Obi Mikel was playing in the midfield. Gonzalo Higuain, Federico Fernandez, Sergio Aguero with Messi kept on attacking and outplaying Mikel, Onazi and Babatunde in the midfield. Osaze was forced to be dropping deep and was doing a good job.

Shortly after Enyama parried into corner a curling Messi’s free kick, It did not dawn on the Eagles that they needed to avoid fouls deep in their half. Another foul and another free kick followed. Messi was this time merciless. He curled the ball into the same corner Enyeama had saved but the Nigerian keeper had no answer this time.

The goal pained the Nigerians in the stadium who were becoming confident that the Eagles could hold Argentina. It was in the stoppage time of the first half. Even the fans of Argentina were no longer as loud as they were in the beginning. Although Eagles were more under pressure, they seemed to be surviving, putting more than many had expected. They impressed to a reasonable extent.

As the Eagles moved into the dressing room, the news that Bosnia were leading 1-0 against Iran was pacifying.

And Ahmed Musa equalised superbly on resumption of the second half. But Argentines know how to make use of set pieces. Marcos Rojo flicked in a corner when Eagles defenders lost a little concentration. It all happened within ten minutes of the second half.

Ricardo Alveres came in for Messi and Okechukwu Uchegbu came in for injured Babatunde in the 65th minute. It was at this stage that Bosnia scored the second goal against Iran and Tijani Ahmed, a Nigerian journalist roared “we are in the second round and Eagles needed a tough match like this to prepare them for the second round.”

Uche Nwofor came in for Osaze Odemwingie and there were audible grumbles among Nigerian journalists, who felt that Osaze was having a good game. As at 84th it was 3-1 for Bosnia and Nigeria were coasting home for a second round were they would face France, a strong team but which are beatable.

The Nigerian team here have shown that they can still go further.

FIFA charges Uruguay’s Luis Suarez for biting incident at World Cup

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 8 Second

RIO DE JANEIRO — Luis Suarez could become just as awkward for football’s international organizers to handle as he has been for rival teams at the World Cup.

The Uruguay forward’s alleged bite into the left shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in a crucial group-stage game has hit a raw nerve at a tournament which has been characterized by a high quality of football and entertainment.

The consequences of Suarez’s bite — just before Uruguay scored the clinching goal to knock out the four-time champion Italians — will now test FIFA president Sepp Blatter’s often-stated commitment to “fair play, discipline, respect.”

Blatter, who was in the crowd for the Uruguay-Italy match at Natal, has previously pledged a zero tolerance for the darker side of the game. Many are questioning where that leaves a player like Suarez, the star Liverpool striker who has a history of disciplinary problems.

In the early hours of Wednesday, FIFA announced it had opened a disciplinary case against the player.

The case will now be managed by Swiss lawyer, Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA disciplinary committee. A former international forward himself, Sulser has worked for four years at FIFA, first as head of its ethics committee and now the disciplinary panel.

Sulser can choose to judge the obvious offense within the scale of typical red-card incidents: A three-match ban may then be appropriate, banishing Suarez at least until the World Cup final should Uruguay advance through the knockout rounds.

There’s scope for a more severe sanction: under the guidelines a ban of up to 24 international matches could be applied.

FIFA can also choose to ban Suarez for a period of time, to a maximum of two years, likely covering all football and not just Uruguay duty. That could affect a widely speculated transfer to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Suarez and the Uruguay football federation had until 5 p.m. local time (4 p.m. EDT/2000 GMT) to present a documented case for the defense, though he is unlikely to be called to Rio de Janeiro to meet with Sulser’s panel.

“They are really aware of the urgency of this matter to be dealt with,” FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer said Wednesday.

FIFA stated it would call on video evidence, which surely will have pleased Blatter, a proponent of using video evidence in cases which on-field officials missed.

“Video evidence can be used for serious breaches of the principle of fair play such as brawling, spitting at opponents, verbal insults and racist slurs, or for incorrectly awarded red or yellow cards,” he wrote in February.

Images of Chiellini pulling aside the sleeve of his Azzurri shirt on the field to show the referee the marks on his shoulder were broadcast around the world. FIFA also has access to footage from other angles and other parts of the field.

Completing the case ahead of Saturday’s match could be complicated if Suarez appeals any ban. That challenge could go direct to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland for an urgent and binding ruling.

However, one option open to FIFA and Sulser to avoid that scenario is that a suspension of “fewer than three matches or of up to two months” cannot be appealed, according to FIFA rules.

This victory brings confidence – Odemwingie

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 5 Second

CUIABA (AFP) – Bosnia-Hercegovina’s maiden appearance at a World Cup finals ended in disappointment as Peter Odemwingie’s goal condemned them to a 1-0 defeat by African champions Nigeria in Cuiaba and ensured they could not qualify for the second round.

Nigeria’s win, their first at a World Cup finals since 1998, leaves them as favourites to join Argentina in the second round.

Argentina are on six points after beating Iran 1-0 earlier on Saturday to leave the Iranians on a point while the Nigerians are on four points.

Nigeria play Argentina in their final group game on Thursday — the Africans have lost all three times they have previously played the South American side in the group stages, losing 1-0 on the last occasion in 2010.

Odemwingie, who has had his fair share of run ins with national coach Stephen Keshi, said the team had been painfully aware of the hiatus between wins.

“We were aware of the 16 year gap with no win for the country,” said the 32-year-old, who was born in the former Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan where his father played football.

“This is very exciting for us and very important too as the fans were disappointed by our previous performance (a 0-0 draw with Iran).

“This victory can have a huge impact on us as it brings confidence with it and if we get to the last 16 who knows what can happen, maybe a repeat of what happened in last year’s Africa Cup of Nations where we got better and better.”

Bosnia coach Safet Susic, who started with just Dzeko up front despite saying after the opening defeat to Argentina he would play with two strikers, said that his side had been robbed of a goal by New Zealand referee Peter O’Leary.

“I was told there was no offside but it’s not the first or last time a referee has made a bad decision at this World Cup and it won’t be the last,” said the 59-year-old.

“We lost to a good side, Nigeria played better than against Iran.”

Nigeria were, as Susic attested to, a completely different team to the one that had barely got out of a Sunday morning stroll in the draw with Iran.

Emmanuel Emineke always looked a threat and it was he who created the goal, as he burst down the right and engaged in a race for the ball with veteran Bosnian skipper Emir Spahic, who tried vainly to obstruct the Nigerian.

However, the central defender had completely misjudged the situation as Emineke went the opposite side and outpaced him to collect the ball before unselfishly squaring it to Peter Odemwingie, with the Stoke City striker tucking the ball away.

Bosnia had little to offer, though they could claim that they had been robbed of a goal as Edin Dzeko put the ball past Vincent Enyeama, but it was wrongly ruled out for offside.

Dzeko, though, could have stolen a point at the death when he rose to meet a corner but his downward header was straight at Enyeama, who gratefully smothered it.

The Manchester City striker went even closer in time added on as his shot from inside the area beat Enyeama but cannoned back off the post.

The referee whistled for fulltime shortly after that with the Bosnians collapsing to the ground in despair and the Nigerians jumping for joy as they — after the Ghanaians drew with Germany earlier on Saturday — restored pride to the African challenge at the finals.
