A young lawyer was found unconscious by detectives at the home she shared with her father and two sisters in Northumberland Road, Harrow, northwest London.

Elizabeth Nnyanzi, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene around 5.55pm on Friday, August 14.

Until her death, Elizabeth who had studied medicine at Imperial College before switching to follow in her Ugandan father’s footsteps as a lawyer, worked at leading City firm, Herbert Smith, Freehills.

According to London Evening Standard, Elizabeth worked for a number of charities and fundraising activities.

Before embarking on her career she had volunteered for Mulaga Hospital in Uganda, where her solicitor father, Joseph, had grown up.

She also volunteered in 2005 at Freedom from Torture, a centre based in Finsbury Park with links to Amnesty International.

She was also part of the Model United Nations during her time at Imperial College.

Elizabeth was said to be a keen singer who had been asked to perform in an opera at the Royal Albert Hall.

A relative, who did not wish to be named, said:

“It’s horrible. She was a very young girl who was doing so well. I’m shocked because I have known her since she was a baby. She’s a lovely girl. So beautiful and doing very well. She was a very talented girl, a young star. It is a really big loss not just for the family but for society in general because she has always done good things for people.”

A Met spokesman said it was awaiting the results of a postmortem carried out on August 16 at Northwick Park Mortuary.

Officers from Harrow's Homicide and Major Crime Command are now leading this investigation under Detective Chief Inspector, Tim Duffield.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Mechanic, Peter Kibisu, was charged this Monday, August 17, in connection with the murder.

He appeared in custody at Hendon Magistrates Court today and will make his next appearance at the Old Bailey on Thursday.

Ukranian born ‘faceless’ girl lands loving family

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 33 Second

6 year old Danica Wetmore, born without a face has been adopted into a loving family who have first hand experience with her condition, thanks to their biological daughter.

Danica had only ever lived inside a Ukrainian orphanage and all that time, Thom and Tami Wetmore were the only ones who ever visited her.

Danica was born with Treacher-Collins syndrome, resulting in deafness and bones missing from her face.

Due to her challenges, the Wetmores were told, the chances were, she'd be turned out of the orphanage when she got older to live on the streets.

'It's just, you felt it in your heart. We knew, as soon as I saw her. I knew, in my spirit, 'Go get your daughter,' Tami Wetmore said. 'That's exactly what I felt is, 'Go get your daughter.'

'She's quirky. Extremely inquisitive. Very artistic,' Thom Wetmore said. 'She loves drawing, painting, expressing herself.'

Most people wondered why the couple took on the challenge that Danica seemed to be.

The answer is their daughter, Juliana Wetmore.

She was born into the family 6 years before Danica showed up.

She has Treacher-Collins syndrome, but a much more severe case.

Along with deafness, she was born without 40 percent of the bones in her face.

'You forget that there's anything different about her after she's sitting there for five minutes,' Thom said.

Juliana has endured 45 surgeries for her face, but her body and her brain have always been perfectly healthy.

Her spirit is always bright.

'Pure love. She loves everybody. She doesn't judge anybody. She doesn't see anybody as different,' Thom said. 'She just takes everybody as the same.'

'My favorite thing to do is watch movies. Watch TV. Play on the computer. Play with my sisters,' Juliana said, talking like a typical 12-year-old.

'Whatever you first think of somebody when you see them on the outside, that's not what they are on the inside,' Thom said.

Juliana on the inside is a girl whose strength inspired her parents to find room in their hearts for Danica, to understand the challenges ahead better than most.

'Danica had been in an orphanage for six-and-a-half years and no one had visited her,' Tami said. 'Nobody had ever inquired about her.'

'We were the first and only ones,' Thom added.

And the Wetmores' love didn't stop with Danica.

After her, they still had more room in their hearts to adopt three siblings who desperately needed a home.

'It's just amazing how your daughter that you look at as just a normal, everyday child that looks a little bit different has changed so many lives,' Thom said. 'Because you realize it's OK to be who you are.'

Greece on a knife edge

0 0
Read Time:8 Minute, 31 Second

It is exactly five years since Greece joined the European Support Mechanism with the close cooperation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). At that time, the key and critical financial data were the following: GDP amounted to 222.151 billions at the end of 2010. The public debt was 148.3% as a percentage of GDP. Unemployment stood at 12.5%. The percentage of Greeks sho were living below the limits of poverty (earning less than 60% of the national median disposable income) was 27.6%.

The policy of extreme austerity applied in the country at the behest of international creditors over the years has further aggravated the economic and social reality. As a result, GDP had shrunk to 186.54 billions in 2014. Public debt has soared to 176% as a percentage of GDP. Unemployment has risen dramatically to 26%, affecting mainly young people many of whom have brilliant scientific knowledge and as a result migrate abroad. This serious loss of talent could help the country at this critical juncture. The percentage of Greeks living below the limits of poverty is 34.6% or 3.795100 people.

So, one understands from the above that the programme of fiscal consolidation in a country that was already in recession before 2010 has completely failed and it would not be rational, economically and socially, to continue its application. This particularly restrictive fiscal policy and austerity measures form an exceptionally lethal debt-recession-austerity spiral, ruling out any prospect for development.

The debt is huge and unbearable

Therefore, the observed persistence in strict continuation of the extreme austerity programme by creditors will have truly tragic consequences for the country. It will lead to total economic disaster, which will not be healed for decades and certainly to an incredibly serious humanitarian crisis for the standards of a post-war Europe. The homeless and impoverished citizens who one can already be seen in the streets of Athens will multiply rapidly. Suicides due to hopelessness and despair caused by the inability to survive will continue its frantic growth trend. Children blacking out in schools due to lack of adequate nutrition will become everyday part of life.

The question then arises with intensification this critical period is what should be done in order for Greece to leave the pitch dark tunnel of deep economic crisis and enter the bright avenue of development and progress.

First, the burden of debt the Greek economy carries on its back is huge and unbearable, and there seems no possibility of payment in full. Therefore, we need to write off the majority of the nominal value of the debt so that the debt burden of the country will be below 100% and become sustainable with a technique that will not harm the other peoples of Europe. The repayment of the remaining debt will be connected with a “development clause”, so as to serve from the development and not from any budget surplus.

Secondly, require the reconstruction of production in the country with these key elements:

                      a) The sustainable equilibrium of the balance current account through changing the mix of produced products in the country, thus strengthening the export orientation margins of many sectors of the Greek economy;

                      b) The industrialization with the implementation of an integrated sustainable industrial policy and the development of domestic research and production of a wide range of high added-value products. The processing sector is particularly critical since it is impossible to hope for a country that will rise in the value chain in the global apportionment of labour without creating the necessary manufacturing base that includes primarily the manufacture of finished industrial products;

                      c) The special emphasis on tourism, to which Greece has a strong comparative advantage and shipping -Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world- and certainly agriculture for the production basic social goods, and

                      d) The efficient exploitation of raw materials -such as bauxite from which aluminium is produced- and the potentially large oilfields located both in the Aegean and the Ionian Seas.

Building a modern and efficient State

Thirdly, we need to build a modern, efficient and rational state that will operate with honesty and will not interpolate countless bureaucratic obstacles to business development and the effective fight against the Lernean Hydra of corruption and tax evasion, to remove the multiple negative economic, social and political consequences caused and finally to apply fair taxation. The economic effects have not only to do with the losses of state finances but also with adverse effects on the private sector. When the notion that only with the bribing of individuals holding nodal positions in public administration can achieve the desired effect is consolidated, investments are discouraged, fair competition is distorted and businesses that refuse to engage in such lawless and immoral trade are condemned to stagnation.

The social and political consequences of corruption are also extremely serious. Corruption causes citizens’ resentment, frustration and a collapse of a strong sense of values. It consolidates the belief that nothing works properly and that law-abiding citizens do not feel justified in being so. Institutions are undermined, shaken and ultimately slandered by the same democracy in the eyes of citizens. We need the immediate establishment of a fair tax system that will not encourage, and will not "justify" tax evasion, but will contribute decisively to the development of taxpayers’ consciences, and will have as a result a significant increase in government revenue.

Greece can’t handle austerity any longer

These measures should apply immediately to pull to pull Greece out of it state of coma and recession, and lead to the much-desired path to development, away from the wild and dead-end austerity policies, which form the spearhead of financial capitalism in its attempt to repay in full their debt, and maintain its sovereignty in an era of intense and generalised capitalist crisis.

For their part, European citizens should stand in solidarity with the drama of the Greek people who, during all these years, have become a guinea pig, since the vast majority of money borrowed by the Greek government does not go to Greek taxpayers, but rather to banks or to the payment of loans, or to recapitalize Greek banks, most of the cost of which the taxpayers bear.

In conclusion, Greece does not stand to continue with austerity. It has already reached its farthest limits, after the standard of living having collapsed, and with it, the dignity of the Greek people, and this will have to be understood by the creditors. Otherwise, the time of conflict and rupture will not be far off.

16-year old girl dies after not having bowel movement for 8 weeks

Read Time:1 Minute, 43 Second

A teenager in the United Kingdom has died from a heart attack, after not having bowel movement for 8 weeks.

According to Telegraph, 16-year old Emily Titterington had a phobia of using the restroom and would frequently withhold her stools for up to two months.

Eventually her bowel grew so large it compressed her chest cavity and caused the displacement of other organs.

Titterington's death was revealed during an inquest which heard how her life could have been saved with appropriate treatment but she had refused to be medically examined.

Home Office pathologist Dr Amanda Jeffery said her symptoms were in keeping with a condition known as "stool withholding", which is more frequent in children.

According to the inquest, Titterington who had mild autism, suffered with bowel problems for most of her life but doctors had been unable to pinpoint the cause.

Furthermore it was learnt that  in the period leading up to her death, Emily's mother had battled in vain to persuade her to be medically examined.

Emily collapsed at her home in St Austell on February 8, 2013, and though paramedics desperately tried to revive her, she was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Describing the evening that led up to her death, Paramedic Lee Taylor said he came to Emily's home that evening and found her looking pale as she complained of pain between her shoulders.

But she refused to go the hospital. However later on when he came back to the house after her parents called again he said "as she moved away I could see that her abdomen was grossly extended. Her lower ribs had been pushed out further than her pubic bone – I was shocked."

During the inquest, it was also revealed that Titterington hadn't used the convenience in 6 – 8 weeks, although her family had tried a number of different remedies for her bowel condition including homeopathic pills, and a technique known as Body Talk, which involved so-called "distance healing".

Agency confirms 5000 Russians are among ISIS fighters

Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

Russian anti-terrorism agency boss, Colonel General Andrei Novikov, has said between 200 and 5000 Russians are among Islamic State (IS) fighters.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, June 17, he said authorities confirmed that a minimum of around Russian passport holders have joined the extremist group in Iraq and Syria.

Several towns in southern Russia, who are mostly Muslim regions at the edge of the Caucasus Mountains, have been deal with a boiling Islamist uprising for many years.

Several of the Emirate’s members were shown in a videos late last year declaring allegiance to the Islamic State around the time of a terrorist attack in Chechnya that the group took credit for.

The Caucasus rebels, battle-hardened by two separatist wars with Russia, are rumored to be some of the Islamic State’s most successful fighters.

Red-bearded Caucasus rebel, Tarkhan Batirashvili, whose combat name is Omar al-Shishani, is believed to be an IS commander in Syria, with a series of decisive victories attributed to him.

Novikov warned that the IS might have obtained nuclear material capable of making a bomb that would cause “worldwide panic.”

However, he did not say how the material could have been obtained.

The IS said in May in its online propaganda magazine, Dabiq, that it could buy a nuclear weapon from the predominantly Muslim nation of Pakistan.

It added that IS allegedly helped North Korea obtain atomic arms in the 1990s.

Mother dozes off as her nappy-landen toddlers wander off

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

Concerned Corio locals spotted the two boys, aged just two and 18 months, in Stead Park about 3pm yesterday.

It is believed the boys left their nearby home when their mum was asleep on the couch and the front door was unlocked.

The good Samaritans dressed the boys in spare clothes, including pink tracksuit pants and a blue jumper, to keep them warm on the chilly 13C day and called police.

Officers collected the boys before 4pm and took them to the Corio police station.

The toddlers were given a bottle of formula and toys to keep them entertained while a search for any relatives was undertaken.

After a frantic search to locate family members, the police released the images of the boys to the media in the hope that someone would recognise the pair.

Family members did not contact police to report the toddlers missing.

But the boys’ mother was found asleep on the couch after officers doorknocked the area near where the boys were spotted.

“The police found the door to the home unlocked and a woman asleep on the couch who did not know where her children were,” a police spokesman said.

“It looks like the mother nodded off at some point in the afternoon and the boys took a stroll to the park together.”

The source said the single mother was a stay-at-home mum and did not appear to be affected by drugs or alcohol when she was found by police.

The mother went to the police station. She has not been charged with an offence.

‘Royalty in the UK is very different to royalty in Nigeria,’ ‘Selma’ actor reveals

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 16 Second

39-years old David Oyelowo has opened up his years in Nigeria while growing up to the world as he says UK royalty is different from what is perceived as royalty in Nigeria.

In a chat with UK Independent, the stage and screen actor, whose role in Selma has put him in the forefront of Hollywood, describes Africa from his point of view as well as his growing up in Nigeria.

"My grandfather was the king of a region in western Nigeria, where I had the privilege to live for seven years while growing up. But what we think of as royalty in the UK is very different to royalty in Nigeria: if you were to throw a stone there, you would hit about 30 princes. So it's a bit more like being the Prince of Islington: it was useful for getting dates but probably not much else," he began.

Continuing, he said, 'There is a depth of feeling that I have for the continent, in the richness of the people, the suffering , but also the transcendent joy that is there – it's like nowhere else on the planet. I wouldn't say that it's in every country in Africa, but most I've been to have that same feeling.'

Oyelowo first gained recognition in the BBC1 drama Spooks and has since appeared in top flight Hollywood movies that include The Butler, Interstellar, Selma and Jack Reacher amongst several others.

Teen, 19, kills in car crash 24hrs after 142mph boast on Snapchat

Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

Addil Haroon, 19, of Rochdale, sent his friends a photo on snapchat boasting as he hit speeds of 142mph just 24 hours before he killed a motorist when he drove his Audi through a red light.

Victim Joseph Brown-Lartey, 24, a marketing officer who was driving through a green light at the time, suffered massive injuries in the impact and was killed instantly. A police officer at the scene said he had 'never seen such destruction of a vehicle travelling on urban roads'.

Addil was jailed for six years after he admitted dangerous driving, causing death by dangerous driving, causing death whilst unlicensed and causing death whilst uninsured. He was also banned from driving for six years.

Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester was told the tragedy occurred on November 9 last year after Haroon, who was studying for an NVQ in motor vehicle repairs, acquired the £22,000 2013 Audi A6 which Lisa Boocock, prosecuting, described as a 'trophy car, impressive and a powerful car'.

A friend hired it on behalf of Haroon as he only held a provisional licence and he had been giving lifts to a number of his friends.

One, Muhammed Yasin, received social media and text messages from Haroon boasting about his fast driving and, during a journey on the M62 on November 8, noticed the teenager had his mobile phone between his knees and was text messaging whilst driving.
