Afrique Telecom, Eutelsat and Wikimédia France combine skills in large-scale initiative to extend free access to French-language Wikipedia in Sub-Saharan Africa via Wi-Fi hotspots

PARIS, France, December 1, 2015/ — Free access to Wikipedia

Afrique Telecom (www.Afrique-Telecom.com) is progressively deploying Internet solutions over Sub-Saharan Africa in combination with Eutelsat’s satellite capacity. Its “TamTam” service extends access to the Internet in rural areas using Wi-Fi hotspots for collective access. In a new step announced today, “TamTam” will be used to offer free access to French-language Wikipedia content for many thousands of users. This initiative, starting in French-speaking Africa, supports Wikimédia France’s strategy to promote free access to educational content, in particular through Wikipedia.

In order to offer free, unlimited access, Afrique Telecom has developed a server located at “TamTam” hotspots that will locally host French-language Wikipedia content. The content will be updated regularly via a satellite link provided by Eutelsat.

A major pilot project

Afrique Telecom’s ambition is to roll-out “TamTam” to between 4000 and 8000 hotspots in the next two years. Eutelsat has agreed to finance servers hosted by the first 1,000 hotspots as a springboard that will also measure the impact of the service.

The Wikimedia movement has made a priority of improving accessibility and content creation on Wikipedia for so-called “Southern” countries. There is still a large gap between Northern and Southern countries in terms of the number of readers and contributors to Wikimedia platforms as well as content on Southern countries. French-speaking Africa is a priority action area for the Wikimédia France Foundation, as a complement to its Afripédia project.

Peeping Tom on moon given telescope to spy on couples having sex

Read Time:59 Second

A PERVERTED old man living in a crater on the moon is given a telescope to spy on couples having sex in John Lewis’s Christmas advert.

The heart-warming advert, in which a little girl helps a lonely voyeur 238,900 miles from his nearest dogging site find joy again, has already been hailed as “the true meaning of Christmas”.

A John Lewis spokesman said: “Christmas is a time for thinking of others, so spare a thought for the dirty old man on your street whose only sexual gratification will be stuffing his turkey.

“Don’t close the curtains when you get undressed this season. Don’t turn off your hacked webcam before sex, and if someone’s rubbing up against you on the bus let them.

“It’s a gift that costs literally nothing to give but could mean the world to someone spending Christmas alone.”

The advert, which ends with a fast zoom out from the moon to the sound of unzipping and a cackle of filthy laughter, has already doubled sales of telescopes, night-vision goggles and telephoto lenses.

Mother horrified to learn that ‘Call of Duty’ game is really rather violent

Read Time:1 Minute, 27 Second

A mother has expressed her shock and dismay that a shooting game with a massive “18” on the box isn’t really suitable for her little bastard.

Susan Forsythe, a moron from Scunthorpe, bought Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 for her 10 year-old son after he said, “It’s not violent, mum; it’s fine, stop being such a bitch”.

Forsythe said “I think it’s disgraceful that a video game company has made a game for grown-ups and then allowed me, a grown-up, to purchase it.”

“There were absolutely no clues as to what this game is really like, apart from the picture of the soldier on the front, the pictures of all the guns on the back, and the various warnings about strong violence.”

“But it shouldn’t be down to me to read all that.”

“I assumed it would be fine for my boy because he asked for it, and all children are perfect and couldn’t possibly enjoy horrible things.”

“Now I’m starting to wonder if the little shit actually did burn down the garden shed.”

Simon Williams, a spokesperson for the game’s publisher, said “There really is only so much we can do.”

“We’ve done warning labels, age-ratings and boxes that make it pretty clear that our game is all about shooting people in the face.”

“Sadly, and to my lasting regret, we can’t put a sign on the box that says ‘don’t buy this for your child, you fucking moron’.”

UK remembers war dead by tormenting people into wearing poppies

Read Time:52 Second

As the UK prepares to remember the servicemen and servicewomen who have died in the line of duty, it has emerged that there is no legitimate reason whatsoever for not wearing a poppy at all times.

Anyone not wearing a poppy will face over-the-top criticism, intimidation and a possible charge of treason if they appear on TV without the symbol of remembrance.

Decent people have welcomed the move with a NewsThump survey showing it was backed by 100% of people who definitely love Britain.

“Not wearing a poppy is like urinating on a cenotaph,” explained Gavin Hudson who took part in the survey.

“If you don’t wear a poppy then the only explanation can be that you support Islamic State.”

Other survey participants expressed similar sentiments.

“My grandfather was killed fighting fascism during the Second World War,” revealed Miriam Longhurst.

“What better way to honour his sacrifice than by bullying someone into doing something that they’re not comfortable with.”

UK: A cat in a carry box is loudly demanding to speak to his lawyer today.

Read Time:59 Second

Max, a six month old tabby, is claiming to be the victim of an extraordinary rendition after being falsely accused of planning to spray his owner’s settee.

He was then lured into the carry box in a sting operation involving someone hitting a can of Whiskas with a fork and a handful of Kitekat.

“It all happened so fast”, he told us. “One minute I was licking my ringpiece, and the next someone had stuck a towel over my head and locked me in this box.”

“I’m afraid they’re taking me to Guantanamo Bay with all the other hairy terrorists.”

“I just want my phone call, and if I don’t get it, this is turning into a dirty protest, get me?”

Max’s captors are remaining tight-lipped about their intentions, holding discussions in whispers or in the next room to prevent him overhearing.

“They just keep giving me meaningful looks and making a snipping action with their fingers.”

“What’s that supposed to mean? I’ll be getting a haircut?”

Bride ditches own wedding to help family involved in car crash [PHOTOS]

Read Time:1 Minute, 27 Second

A bride's quick decision has earned her the title of a hero after she left her wedding to save her family involved in a car crash.

29-yr-old Sarah Ray, a paramedic from Clarksville, Tennessee rushed to the site of the accident one hour after her October 3 wedding to ensure none of her loved ones were injured or hurt in the crash.

Ray's father and grandparents were involved in the accident.

The bride's grandmother had to be hospitalised and her father sustained minor injuries but it looked like everyone was going to be fine in the end.

"There are a lot of people that are using the word "hero,"" Ray told ABC News.

"I don’t think what we did was heroic. It's just anything that any first-responder would have done."

"We had stopped at accidents before and in regular clothes. It just so happened that this time, I was in a wedding dress," she added.

Ray's father and grandparents were driving to the newlyweds wedding reception when the crash occurred. A car had run a red light and crashed into her family's vehicle.

Photos of the bride rushing to the crash site in her wedding dress were taken by her mother.

"I think the photo is great"

"It definitely makes for a memorable wedding. I hate that the actual accident had to happen, but everyone is going to be OK, so we can kind of laugh about it [the photo] now," said Ray who married a paramedic, Paul.

The couple made their way to the reception after making sure everyone was alright.

Uproar over fireman who set asylum shelter ablaze

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 37 Second

German politicians are expressing outrage over the case of a fireman who has admitted to setting an asylum shelter ablaze and been allowed to walk free pending charges.

No one was hurt in the arson attack in the small town of Altena south of Dortmund. Seven Syrians who had arrived the day before, including a pregnant woman, escaped injury after neighbours noticed the blaze and alerted them.

But some politicians say the case has cast an unfavourable light on how German authorities are responding to a rash of shelter burnings across the country.

Germany, a favoured destination for refugees fleeing war in the Middle East, expects a record 800,000 to a million asylum seekers to arrive in the country this year.

Many Germans have welcomed the influx, donating clothes, helping at shelters and even opening their homes to refugees.

But others are dead-set against Chancellor Angela Merkel's welcoming stance. German federal police have counted 26 arson attacks on refugee shelters in the first nine months of the year. The Amadeu Antonio Foundation, a group that campaigns against right-wing extremism, puts the number at 70.

Yet only one person, in the northern town of Luebeck, has been convicted of an arson attack on a shelter this year. That person was given two years' probation.

The Altena case has attracted attention in part because the 25-year-old man behind the attack was a local fireman.

Prosecutors say he has admitted to entering the house, climbing to the attic and dousing it with gasoline before lighting the fire. In explaining his actions, he said he was scared about refugees living in his neighbourhood.

An accomplice who acted as a look-out later turned himself in to police and told them of the fireman's role. Because of the fire, the refugees have been forced to leave the town.

Local prosecutor Bernd Maas told Reuters he had decided to charge the men with arson rather than attempted murder or a political hate-crime, which carry tougher penalties, because he didn't believe they had meant to hurt anyone.

"They certainly had xenophobic motives but since they are not part of the right-wing extremist scene, there was no reason to treat this as a politically motivated case," Maas said.

"They didn't want to kill anyone and the suspect in his capacity as a firefighter was aware that setting fire to the attic would not hurt anybody."

A number of politicians have condemned that approach, saying it could set a dangerous precedent.

Dirk Wiese, a member of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) who sits in the German parliament in Berlin, called the prosecutor's assessment unacceptable.

"The offender shared a number of posts from populist right-wing websites on his Facebook page. Two clicks online would have been sufficient to determine his political motives," Wiese said.

Omid Nouripour, a lawmaker from the Greens party, called the prosecutor's decision "absurd" and said there was no doubt in his mind that the attack had been politically motivated.

Mother of dead Jihadist sad but relieved that son is dead

Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

The mother of a deceased British jihadi has expressed her relief over the death of her son, saying that he cannot hurt anyone, anymore.

Thomas Evans, has told of how her 'shy and gentle boy' turned into the monster who 'murdered Christians and torched churches'.

She says she is glad he is dead and believes he is “burning in hell” for his crimes.

Evans left his home in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in 2011 to fight alongside the al-Shabaab terror group in Somalia.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, his mother, Sally, 57, said:

"I respected his right to be a Muslim… but eventually he stopped respecting my right to be secular and repeatedly told his brother and I we were destined for hell unless we converted to Islam."

In a phone call with his worried mother, he told her that he had married a young girl who was '13 or 14' and did not speak English.

Leaked Audio: Hillary Clinton Calls at Private Fundraiser for Infrastructure Bank…

Leaked Audio: Hillary Clinton Calls at Private Fundraiser for Infrastructure Bank to Resemble Clinton Global Initiative

Hillary Clinton told donors at a private fundraiser in New York last Thursday that she plans as president to create a “national infrastructure bank” modeled on the Clinton Global Initiative, according to a recording of her remarks obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

This was the first time that Clinton, who has long supported the formation of a government-controlled bank to invest in national infrastructure projects, cited the Clinton Global Initiative—the flagship arm of her family’s controversial foundation—as an investment model for her proposed bank.

Clinton said CGI’s “public-private” partnership with labor unions has created tens of thousands of jobs, and argued that a federal infrastructure bank could take on this type of project.

“Think of what we can do on a national scale,” said Clinton.

Clinton’s plan for a national infrastructure bank dovetails with the financial interests of some of her most prominent supporters. Her comments could also give ammunition to critics who say that the Clintons’ philanthropic operations, including CGI, have been plagued with conflicts of interest and financial mismanagement.

“I want to see if we can create what is called an infrastructure bank,” said Clinton. “It’s like a revolving loan fund so we can take it out of to a great extent the annual fight over appropriations. If we can get it funded with a combination of public and private funds, we can do this.”

Clinton cited as an example a $15 billion project she said the Clinton Global Initiative is running with labor union pension funds to train people for “clean energy work.”

“The Clinton Global Initiative that my husband started has a project with a lot of labor union pension funds. They have put $15 billion into a fund to train workers to be able to do energy efficiency and other clean energy work,” said Clinton. “Think of what we can do on a national scale. … There is no doubt in my mind this is a win-win.”

The Clinton fundraiser was hosted at the Greenwich Village home of John Zaccaro, a convicted felon. Clinton did not take questions after her remarks, which is unusual for a prominent candidate at a closed-door fundraising event.

Clinton’s campaign website says the proposal would “leverage public and private capital to invest in critically important infrastructure projects, including energy infrastructure projects.”

Supporters of such a bank say it would help spur investment and job creation by letting the private sector invest in public projects. But the concept has also been criticized as a magnet for cronyism that could allow government officials to hand out loans to allies as political favors.

“The basic premise is if we throw enough public and private money into a bucket and then let private parties sort of draw on it to build better roads, the whole problem will sort itself out,” said Adam J. White, counsel at Boyden Gray & Associates, a law firm that focuses on federal regulation. “That strikes me at best a recipe for a failed transportation policy and at worst an opportunity for wasting billions of dollars.”

White said recent controversies over the green energy company Solyndra and the Export-Import bank also show the potential for “favoritism, waste, politicalization.”

Clinton’s plan could also be a windfall for some of her top financial supporters.

One likely beneficiary would be Robert Wolf, a Clinton donor and former bundler for the Obama campaign who previously chaired UBS Americas. Wolf runs the consulting firm 32 Advisors, which has contributed between $10,000 and $25,000 to the Clinton Foundation.

The firm announced the formation of a new infrastructure practice in April to help clients obtain funding for infrastructure projects. It brought on Michael Likosky, an expert in infrastructure financing and government planning, to lead the practice. Likosky has also advised CGI on infrastructure projects, and billed himself in July as “an Expert to the Clinton Initiative.”

Another donor that could benefit from a national infrastructure bank is Mary Scott Nabers, head of the consulting firm Strategic Partnerships, Inc. The firm helps clients to procure government contracts for public-private infrastructure projects. Nabers has contributed between $10,000 and $25,000 to the Clinton Foundation.

Labor unions, which represent a major voting bloc and well of financial support for Clinton, would also benefit significantly from a national infrastructure bank.

Union officials said they hoped that their project with CGI—which was cited by Clinton at her recent fundraiser—would help “spur creation of a National Infrastructure Bank to spur subsidized bonds for public works projects,” the Chicago Tribune reported in 2011.

The Clinton campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Air Strikes on Homs are ‘Holy War Against Terrorism’ says Russian Orthodox Church

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

The Russian Orthodox Church has backed the country’s parliamentary decision to give President Vladimir Putin permission to use military force in Syria, saying the fight against terrorism is a “holy war”.

The head of Synodal department for church and society, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, told journalists on 30 September that the decision from the upper chamber of parliament, the Federation Council, to authorise air strikes in Syria was “consistent with international law, the mentality of our people and the role that our country has always played in the Middle East”, according to Interfax news agency.

He added that Russia cannot be indifferent while Christians and other minority groups are being destroyed in the region. The interreligious council of Russia released a statement in support of military operations against terrorism in the Middle East. “The fight against terrorism is a holy struggle and today our country is perhaps the most active force in the world to combat terrorism,” the priest said.

Under the Russian constitution, the president needs parliamentary approval to legally use the military outside of the country. Putin last sought such authorisation before annexing Crimea in March 2014.

Kremlin Chief of Staff Sergei Ivanov said the military was to fight Islamic State (Isis) militants in Syria, upon a request from President Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian presidency confirmed it required military assistance to fight terrorism. According to US officials, Russia conducted its first air strikes on rebel-held areas of Homs.
