Dr. Dakuku Peterside, former Director-General of NIMASA and ex-Rivers APC gubernatorial candidate, once wrote, “Security, law, and order are the major preoccupations of any government. Once a government gets this right, it has taken the first correct step. Growing insecurity is the first sign of a failing state.”
This sentiment echoes Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who said the three main goals of governance are: security, opportunity, and hope.
In this context, we examine the persistent insecurity in Rivers State, Nigeria — especially under Governor Nyesom Wike — and reflect on the security legacy of his predecessor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
The Security Situation Amaechi Inherited
When Amaechi assumed office on October 28, 2007, Rivers State, particularly Port Harcourt, was ranked among the world’s most dangerous cities. Cult violence, kidnapping, militancy, and armed robbery were rampant. Reports at the time described streets soaked in blood, frequent massacres, and a population living in constant fear.
Ahamefula Ogbu of ThisDay described how armed cultists roamed freely, while the late George Onah of Vanguard depicted Port Harcourt as a city under siege.
Amaechi’s Security Response
Amaechi’s administration launched a decisive crackdown on militancy.
Key strategies included:
✅ Refusing to pay off militants or politicians sponsoring violence.
✅ Massive investment in security infrastructure, including surveillance equipment, patrol teams, and armored helicopters.
✅ Training over 200 police officers in modern crime-fighting techniques, some overseas.
✅ Installing the first backscatter mobile scanning van and deploying surveillance cameras across the city.
As Dakuku Peterside put it, “Amaechi believed security was the foundation upon which progress depended.”
By December 2012, Rivers reported zero kidnappings or major armed robberies, earning recognition for stability and growth.
The Wike Years and a Return to Violence
Under Governor Wike, many argue that Rivers State has relapsed into a “Rivers of Blood.”
Reports suggest Wike:
Created and funded the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), allegedly used to recruit political foot soldiers.
Reached out to former warlords and ex-militants, with accusations of empowering them for political ends.
Oversaw a climate where, by the 2015 and 2016 elections, dozens of political opponents were killed, local party offices bombed, and entire communities terrorized.
Kennedy Friday, a local commentator, described gruesome scenes of mass killings and beheadings in Ahoada East. Senator Magnus Abe lamented rampant killings across communities, while journalist Jimitota Onoyume reported the brutal murder of police officers and civilians.
Economic Consequences
Amaechi pointed out that under his tenure, Rivers State’s internally generated revenue (IGR) stood at N8 billion monthly. Under Wike, it reportedly fell to N4 billion, as investors fled due to insecurity. Amaechi argued, “The first responsibility of government is security. Without it, there is nothing to celebrate.”
Political Intrigue and Fallout
Wike’s ambition to become governor, which began during his time as Amaechi’s Chief of Staff, allegedly led to deep political divisions. Even while serving as Minister of State for Education, Wike was reported to have funded ex-militant groups, notably donating six months’ salary to the Tompolo Foundation, fueling fears of renewed violence.
Critics like Uche Igwe described Wike as a “vindictive, thug-minded politician,” while Sam Nda-Isaiah of Leadership Newspaper criticized President Jonathan’s support for what he called Wike’s gangsterism.
A Tale of Two Rivers States
Amaechi’s era saw Rivers hosting major national and international events, from sports festivals to investment forums, showcasing a peaceful, thriving state.
By contrast, under Wike, Rivers has been described as a state where “life has lost meaning,” marked by political killings, community clashes, and widespread fear.
Final Reflection
While Wike has been named “Apostle of Peace” by some groups and received awards like The Sun Newspaper’s “Governor of the Year,” media figures like Lady Oby Ndukwe argue these titles are ironic, given the controversies and violence of his administration.
As Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the author and media consultant behind this reflection, concludes:
“It’s left for the public to judge whose tenure — Amaechi’s or Wike’s — truly served Rivers State, and whose era was, indeed, a waste.”

Miss. Stephanie Otobo, Lekki, Lagos. Monday, March 13, 2017 The Commissioner of Police, The Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, Lagos State. Dear Sir,
PETITION AGAINST APOSTLE JOHNSON SULEMAN FOR ILLEGAL PROCUREMENT OF ABORTION, THREAT TO LIFE AND ATTEMPTED MURDER.
Sir, my name is Miss Stephanie Otobo, and I wish to bring a formal complaint to you against one Apostle Johnson Suleman as follows:
That sometime in June 2015, Apostle Suleman Johnson and I started an amorous relationship in far away Canada. The relationship was nurtured by Apostle Suleman who inundated me with cash gifts and pleasure trips all over Europe.
In particular, I was invited by Apostle Suleman to join him for his crusade that was held in 2015 at Napoli, Italy, the full expenses for the trip was paid for by the gentleman. While in Napoli, Apostle Suleman would preach and do “miracle” in the day time and take the much needed rest in my bosom at night.
Napoli was our love nest for three (3) good days and after the crusade Apostle Suleman left Napoli and I also returned to Canada.
Shortly after the Napoli experience, I discovered that I was pregnant for Apostle Suleman. I called my lover to inform him of the pregnancy but Apostle Suleman was not particularly excited about the news rather he requested that I should come to Nigeria.
Based on Apostle Suleman’s instruction I left Canada for Nigeria to meet Apostle Suleman. It is important to note that despite the amorous relationship, I saw Apostle Suleman like a father figure who takes care of me and to whom I was extremely obedient to.
I arrived Nigeria on the 25th of August, 2015 and clandestine arrangement was made for the two (2) of us to meet and consequently, I met Apostle Suleman at Definite Destiny Hotel, beside Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State. It was at the hotel that I was given a concoction to drink by Apostle Suleman who told me that the concoction was for my spiritual fortification. But in less than ten (10) minutes after drinking the concoction, I started vomiting blood and passing out blood. Apostle Suleman then gave me pills to stop the blood though the blood did not stop immediately but the pain subsided and the pregnancy was gone.
I was devastated by the development and Apostle Suleman gave me cash gifts in three (3) different currencies, to wit; Euro, Dollars and Naira to console and compensate me for the loss of the pregnancy. I could not come to terms with the facts that the man that claimed to love me and promised to marry me, could procure abortion for me without my consent which could have lead to my death.
Unfortunately Apostle Suleman did not stop at procuring abortion for me without my consent but also in a desperate bid to keep the amorous relationship between him and I a secret not known to his teeming followers, Apostle Suleman invented various devices to bully and threaten my life. It is against this backdrop that I urge you to use your good offices to call for a thorough and dispassionate investigation into the above allegations. I plead with you, in the course of your investigation, to confirm the exchange of all our text messages from the networks, forensic analysis of all the nude pictures we both sent to ourselves (and whether they are, indeed, photo-shopped or authentic), our international passports to confirm the dates and times of our travels, investigation concerning the hotels we slept together both in and out of Nigeria and bank accounts to confirms the transfers of funds.

The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Monday Igbuya, Friday described Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia as a leader of rare character.
In a condolence message to the family, Igbuya applauded Ogbemudia’s efforts in the improvement of sports, urban development, education, public transportation, housing and commerce in defunct Bendel State.
“Ogbemudia was an honest man, an extraordinary politician, a great leader and a man of principle. From 1957 when he joined the Nigerian Army to the day he died, Ogbemudia stood out” Igbuya said.
He praised the second republic governor for his role in the Nigerian Counter Coup of 1966.
“His character was legendary, particularly when tested by the counter coup of 1966 and his trial where he was acquitted” the speaker said.
The Delta State House of Assembly presiding officer said Edo and Delta owed a great deal to Ogbemudia’s leadership.
“Ogbemudia really showed what difference an individual could make, what difference a leader could make”
He said Ogbemudia served with distinction as an administrator and a governor of the Mid West State, later Bendel State.
“Ogbemudia was a professional of immense reputation. His was an enduring performance. Apart from his achievements during his military days, he also left lasting testimonies of his contribution to Bendel State.
“Indeed, Ogbemudia, a governor on the platform of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and one of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), played his part well and the legacy he left will remain an eloquent testimony to a life of achievement”.
“Nigerians will certainly miss the man who left a lasting stamp on Edo and Delta. Ogbemudia will be remembered for his very unique and purposeful leadership. He will also be remembered by Nigerians as a brave military officer”.
“On behalf of the good people of Sapele and myself, i send our heartfelt condolences to his entire family, his wide circle of friends and Nigerians as a whole for the loss of this thoroughly good and great man, Chief Samuel Ogbemudia”

Despite restraining itself from dignifying the good riddance of Chief Glory Emeh who recently crawled back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after his mission as a mole was uncovered, the Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, is however compelled to respond to the obvious kindergarten media propaganda Glory Emeh has been conducting in the media against the party.
