Oprah says she’s not running for president but fans are undeterred

Read Time:2 Minute, 6 Second

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey apparently ended her brief flirtation with a run for the U.S. presidency in 2020, telling InStyle magazine in an interview published on Thursday that she was not interested.

But the leader of a political action committee supporting Winfrey said it would still to try to persuade her to run and continue seeking to recruit 1 million supporters.

Winfrey, 63, stole the show at the Golden Globes awards ceremony earlier this month with a speech against sexual harassment and assault. It sparked an online campaign to lure her into running against Republican U.S. President Donald Trump in the next election cycle.

“It’s not something that interests me,” Winfrey told InStyle. .”.. I met with someone the other day who said that they would help me with a campaign. That’s not for me.”

Winfrey, long associated with Democratic Party causes and fundraising, could not be reached for immediate comment.

Winfrey’s friends had backed the idea with her longtime partner in business and life, Stedman Graham, telling the Los Angeles Times “she would absolutely do it” if there was sufficient public support. Confidante Gayle King said on “CBS This Morning” that Winfrey was “intrigued” by the idea.

After the Golden Globes, Democratic political consultant Cormac Flynn said he began receiving calls from associates who immediately persuaded him to support a Winfrey run, and he formed the National Committee to Draft Oprah Winfrey for President of the United States 2020.

The committee would continue despite the InStyle interview, Flynn said, noting that other politicians have decided to run after initially declining.

“The purpose of our committee is to convince Oprah to reconsider,” said Flynn, whose independent expenditure committee, or Super PAC, consists of two unpaid staff and two consulting firms that are donating their time.

“She’s an exceptional leader and would be a tremendous president,” Flynn said.

Known by millions on first-name basis, Winfrey first rose to fame as the host of a television talk show, using it to build a media empire that spans magazine publishing, movie and television production, cable TV and satellite radio. Born into poverty, she is now one of the world’s wealthiest women and been nominated for two Academy Awards.

Trump relished the idea of a celebrity-versus-celebrity campaign, telling reporters earlier this month he did not think Winfrey would run but believed he would win that matchup.

“I’ll beat Oprah,” Trump said. “Oprah would be a lot of fun.”

US Justice Dept recovers FBI officials’ missing text messages

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 5 Second

WASHINGTON, Jan 25 (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department’s internal watchdog said Thursday it recovered five months of missing text messages between two Federal Bureau of Investigation officials whom Republicans have accused of bias against President Donald Trump.

In a letter to several key Republican lawmakers, Inspector General Michael Horowitz said he would not object if the Justice Department shares with congressional committees the messages between FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page that were recovered using forensic tools.

In texts that were previously released to Congress, Strzok and Page referred to Trump as an “idiot” and a “loathsome human.” After news reports about the messages, lawmakers demanded to see them amid Republican concerns that agency officials were biased against Trump.

Strzok and Page both worked on the FBI’s investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, and they also each briefly worked on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing probe into whether the 2016 Trump campaign colluded with Russia.

Their cellphones are just two of “thousands” whose texts were not backed up and stored on the FBI’s systems between Dec. 14, 2016 and May 17, 2017, according to a Justice Department official.

The FBI has blamed the snafu on “misconfiguration issues” that occurred while the bureau was rolling out new software updates for Samsung 5 devices.

But Republicans have claimed the timing is suspect, especially because May 17 marks the date that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel.

Strzok and Pages’ text messages have become a focal point of congressional Republicans’ investigation into whether the FBI is biased against Trump and gave Clinton more favorable treatment in its investigation of her private email use.

Horowitz, whose office is conducting its own review into the FBI’s handling of the Clinton matter, discovered the texts over the summer and informed Mueller. Strzok was then reassigned. Page, meanwhile, left the team in July after her 45-day detail ended.

While Republicans have accused the two of bias against Trump, some of the texts suggest he was just one of many people targeted in their routine political banter.

At times, for instance, they were also critical of Clinton.

In addition, another Strzok text also appears to contradict the notion that the FBI is out to get Trump, after he told Page he was hesitant to join Mueller’s team because of his “gut sense and concern there’s no big there there.”

Two more women have come forward to accuse Nelly of sexual assaul

Read Time:1 Minute, 27 Second

Two more women have come forward to accuse Nelly of sexual assault, according to court documents in a pending rape lawsuit against the rapper. Earlier this week, his first accuser, Monique Greene, filed an injunction requesting that a judge legally force Nelly to stop sexually assaulting women.
In her filing, Greene cites accusations from two other unidentified women to demonstrate an alleged pattern of abuse. According to “Jane Doe 1,” Nelly invited her to a VIP room after one of his concerts in England in June 2016, where he allegedly grabbed her leg and groped her under her skirt. “Jane Doe 2” says that in December 2017, also after a Nelly concert in England, she was invited onto Nelly’s tour bus with her friends. There, she says Nelly took her to a separate room and allegedly masturbated in front of her, forcibly placed her hand on his penis, and proceeded to make her perform oral sex on him.
In October 2017, Nelly was arrested on suspicion of raping Greene, who had claimed he sexually assaulted her on his tour bus in Ridgefield, Washington. Greene later dropped the criminal charges, saying she did not “feel safe enough” to testify in court and instead sued Nelly for defamation and sexual assault. In her amended lawsuit, Greene claims that Nelly “threatened” and “intimidated” her after she pressed charges. Nelly has denied the rape accusation and said he will take legal action against her. Greene’s lawyer tells the Daily Beast that police in England have been in contact with her team about the new allegations, and that “more than two” other women have come forward to Greene with more allegations against Nelly but do not have “permission” to go public with their stories.

Israel backs India’s right to hit terror hideouts across Line of Control

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said his country and India “have some understanding” should India decide to unilaterally carry out combative action across the Line of Control against UN-designated terrorists, a statement that is indicative of an endorsement of India’s right to defend itself.

In an exclusive interview with Times Now, when specifically asked if Israel would back such an action, Netanyahu said, “Well, let’s say this, we have some understanding and I don’t think I have to add beyond that,” before adding that the Indo-Israeli partnership is not directed against any specific country.

“We (Israel) are not enemies of Pakistan and Pakistan should not be our enemy either,” he said.

Asked about the Palestine issue, he said, “Israel does not claim to be a perfect country. I don’t know any country which is without problems. But, we extend our hands in peace to our neighbhours. It is unfortunate that at least on the Palestinian side, we haven’t seen a reciprocal response.” He also claimed, “Israel is no longer viewed by most Arab countries as an enemy, but as an indispensible ally in their battle against radicalism.”

He also described India-Israel ties as a ‘partnership of civilizations and of democracies.’ Netanyahu said, “I was in one of the centres of excellence in Gujarat, where Israeli agricultural know-how is being transmitted to Indian farmers. Five farmers told me growing vegetables had helped increase their income four-five-fold. I said, ‘this is tremendous’. If we can have that multiplied for all, it means we just raised the living standard of a massive number of Indians.”

White House : Trump scored “exceedingly well” on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 16 Second

Identifying animals and reciting a list of words are among the type of challenges contained in the cognitive fitness test taken by US President Donald Trump.

According to White House doctor Ronny Jackson, Trump scored “exceedingly well” (30 out of 30) on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and has “no cognitive issues whatsoever.”

Jackson said Trump himself had requested to sit the test after questions about his mental health.

“I think he saw doing the physical as an opportunity to put some of that to rest,” Jackson said. “And I think he wasn’t the least bit concerned that he had anything to hide.”

But what is this test, first created in 2005, and how does it work?

According to the website mocatest.org, it is a “rapid screening instrument for mild cognitive dysfunction.”

Among other things, the test assesses attention and concentration, memory, language, calculation and — appropriately for a president — executive function.

It takes around 10 minutes to complete and any score above 26 is considered “normal.”

An example of the sort of test Trump faced is available online.

Candidates first have to copy a cube, link up numbers to the appropriate letter in the alphabet (A=1, B=2, etc) and draw a clock showing the time 11:10.

They are then given three animals to identify — the online example shows a lion, rhinoceros and camel.

Five simple words are then read out and the candidate has to recite them immediately and then again after five minutes.

This test is then repeated with numbers, with a series of three numbers to be recited backwards.

To test “attention”, the examiner reads a long list of letters and the candidate has to tap with his or her hand whenever the letter “A” is read out.

Numeracy is examined by asking the candidate to subtract seven from 100 and repeat this operation five times (giving a series of 93, 86, 79, 72, 65).

To test language, the candidate is asked to repeat two phrases and then recite as many words beginning with a certain letter as possible in one minute. Eleven words are required to secure a point.

The two final questions are an abstraction test, where candidates have to decipher a link between two words, and “orientation”, where the candidate has to state the day of the week, as well as the month, date, year and what city they are in.

In the initial study that established the test, the average score was just over 27. Candidates with “mild cognitive impairment” scored just over 22 and people with Alzheimer’s disease around 16.

An example of the test can be found online here: http://dementia.ie/images/uploads/site-images/MoCA-Test-English_7_1.pdf

U.S. to relocate embassy to Jerusalem within a year

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 17 Second

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday said that the U.S. will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem within a year.

The prime minister’s timeline drastically differs from that offered earlier by White House officials, who said the move would take at least three to four years due to stringent security measures and other requirements.

Netanyahu made this known to Israeli reporters on a flight from Dehli to Gujarat during a state visit to India, the Times of Israel reported.

A spokesman for the prime minster confirmed the content.

“My confident assessment is that it will move much faster than people think, within a year from today,” Netanyahu said, according to the Times of Israel.

President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on Dec. 6 and initiated a process to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.

Israel occupied the eastern half of Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed the territory in a move that was not internationally recognised.

Israel has long claimed that Jerusalem as its “undivided capital,” while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Trump’s controversial decision sparked protests in some countries and was rejected in a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution.

The recognition was welcomed in Israel, and Guatemala has since announced it will follow the U.S. in moving its embassy to the city.

Arab foreign ministers are set to meet on Feb. 1 in Cairo to discuss steps against Trump’s recognition, the Arab League had earlier said.

Give us weapons to defend ourselves against these Fulani herdsmen from northern Nigeria

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 25 Second

The fact.

May be you have not heard. May be you don’t deem it as serious as it is. May be it doesn’t interest you more than stories on oil prices. Or maybe you are simply an accomplice. An accomplice of the massacre of countless Nigerians, mostly Christians, and from the middle-belt and southern regions of Nigeria, by Fulani herdsmen, the butchers from the North!

You International Media and the entire International Community, why do you close your eyes to a real case of genocide and ethnic cleansing going on in Nigeria now under the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB)? What then is your role of the mouth-piece of the masses? Is it to support the maiming and killing of innocent people, the raping of women and children, and the tactical ethnic cleansing of the middle-belt and the southern parts of Nigeria, under the pretext of looking for grazing fields by the nomadic terrorists, by your silence? The worst scenario is the amount of impunity with which these crimes against humanity are being perpetrated. What is the source of such audacity? Isn’t it because President Buhari is the leader of this nomadic militia group, and through whose executive power (as Nigerian president), has added to the barbaric powers of  his tribe’s men to install fear on defenceless Nigerians from other parts of the country? This is the current state of affairs in Nigeria but you all keep quiet, making yourselves both accomplices to this crime, as well as sympathisers of this terrorist militia.

You the International Community and the International Media, with all your powerful network of information-gathering, will you also claim ignorance of the recent mayhem that took place in Enugu state, precisely in the village of Nimbo, and recently on the 24th of August in the village of Attakwu, all in Enugu state? Here, a seminarian and a six-month pregnant woman were butchered at night by these blood-sucking kinsmen of President Buhari, called the Fulani herdsmen. Why? Simply because, having brought their cattle to graze in the homes and farm lands of the village, the owners of the village, precisely some women and children sounded the metal gong which caused to fleeing away of their herd. Shockingly, they Fulani herdsmen returned at night about 2am as they had promised and unleashed havoc on the helpless villagers who were asleep, during which the seminarian Lazarus Nwafor residing in one of the houses in this village for his apostolic work was gruesomely killed, alongside a pregnant woman whom they cut her intestines into pieces.  So many others were critically injured as well. What a horrific image as seen circulating on the internet since then! And similar cases have been recorded in several other towns and villages in the south-east of Nigeria. It has almost become a daily phenomenon. Yet the government of Nigeria remains dead silent because it obviously aligns with the political strategy of conquering opponents by all sorts of intimidating strategies. If not, why haven’t the government security forces been able to intervene up till now to at least arrest and prosecute these vampires?

.The scenario.

The scenario represents an ugly picture, which happens to be the truth of the Nigerian state of the nation today. The truth is that the evil (of these crimes of impunity) comes from two primary sources of motivation (as described by Fani Kayode in Vanguard newspaper of 28th August 2016): “the first is the forceful and bloody quest for Fulani supremacy, ethnic hegemony and racial domination in Nigeria, at all costs. And the second is the morbid obsession by the radical Muslims of core northern Nigeria to shed innocent blood, to take life in the name of their god, to effect jihad against those that do not share their worldview, to wipe out Christianity, to enslave Nigerians and Islamise Nigeria”. That unfortunately is the hard truth which has played out very flagrantly even in the political appointments made by President Buhari since his one year in office, against Christians and especially against the people from the southern part of Nigeria.

This same plot had started with the other Islamic monstrous terrorist group also from the same northern Nigeria, called Boko-Haram, which got affiliated to ISIS. With their long-term project designed and fabricated by the northern Nigerian political elite, they succeeded in their plan to discredit the former president Goodluck Jonathan in the eyes of the International Community, simply because he hails from the South and doubles as a Christian. Having realised this first step in their heinous project, the next step is taking the Islamisation agenda even at the cost of innocent lives to the other parts of Nigeria, leading into a gradual and silent genocide and ethnic cleansing. Yet, the International Community stays silent on this grievous issue; the International Media doesn’t take any interest in revealing to the world the ongoing crime against humanity in Nigeria right now, in order to denounce this tragedy.

.An urgent plea.

As a concerned Nigerian, pained by this unfortunate state of my country, and even with my status as a catholic priest, I beg the international community to release weapons to the people of the middle-belt and southern parts of Nigeria to defend their lives and properties under urgent threat of total extermination by Fulani herdsmen. Note it clearly that it is not in the interest of President Buhari and his government to stop what is happening, let alone to protect the southerners. Since this government in place is championing this agenda of ethnic cleansing, it doesn’t make any sense for it to do anything to bring it to a halt. I strongly believe that under the UN resolution of protection of the civil population under such conditions, precisely the resolution of 1894 (2009) of the UN Security Council, such a gesture will not only be considered most appropriate, but also will be largely appreciated as a timely humanitarian act.

This is in no-way an apologetic of violence for violence, but it is simply the only language that the Fulani herdsmen terrorists of northern Nigeria can understand. Joining my voice to that of Fani Kayode, “I would urge all those that still love and support this government to take a long hard look at the pictures that are strewn all over the internet of their fellow Nigerians that have been mutilated and carved up like Christmas turkeys and sallah goats. This is the work of Buhari’s kinsmen, the Fulani militias and herdsmen. He has refused to arrest any of them let alone bring them to justice. Instead he has ruined our economy, impoverished and destroyed the lives of our people and aborted their God-given destiny, divided our nation on religious and ethnic lines, demonised us before the international community and labelled every Nigerian, apart from himself, as being incompetent and corrupt” [Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/the-butchers-from-the-north/].

With his skilful propaganda mission against corruption in Nigeria, I strongly feel President Buhari has succeeded in hypnotising you all and blindfolding the International Community against the crime of genocide that his government is quietly perpetrating in Nigeria through the connivance with his Fulani herdsmen brothers. By their strategy of silence and “allow-them-kill-them-all”, the Nigerian government under PMB is not ready to rescue the helpless southerners from being extinguished from the map of Nigeria. Therefore, please give us weapons to defend ourselves against the Fulani herdsmen-terrorists!

Clement Chimaobi EMEFU.

Woman in Australia crashes her own funeral, surprising husband who paid to have her killed

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 0 Second

Noela Rukundo sat in a car outside her home, watching as the last few mourners filed out. They were leaving a funeral — her funeral.

Finally, she spotted the man she’d been waiting for. She stepped out of her car, and her husband put his hands on his head in horror.

“Is it my eyes?” she recalled him saying. “Is it a ghost?”

“Surprise! I’m still alive!” she replied.

Far from being elated, the man looked terrified. Five days ago, he had ordered a team of hit men to kill Rukundo, his partner of 10 years. And they did — well, they told him they did. They even got him to pay an extra few thousand dollars for carrying out the crime.

Now here was his wife, standing before him. In an interview with the BBC Thursday, Rukundo recalled how he touched her shoulder to find it unnervingly solid. He jumped. Then he started screaming.

“I’m sorry for everything,” he wailed.

But it was far too late for apologies; Rukundo called the police. The husband, Balenga Kalala, ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years in prison for incitement to murder, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (the ABC).

The happy ending — or, as happy as can be expected to a saga in which a man tries to have his wife killed — was made possible by three unusually principled hit men, a helpful pastor and one incredibly gutsy woman: Rukundo herself.

Rukundo’s ordeal began almost exactly a year ago, when she flew from her home in Melbourne with her husband, Kalala, to attend a funeral in her native Burundi. Her stepmother had died and the service left her saddened and stressed. She retreated to her hotel room in Bujumbura, the capital, early in the evening; despondent after the events of the day, she lay down in bed. Then her husband called.

“He told me to go outside for fresh air,” she told the BBC.

But the minute Rukundo stepped out of her hotel, a man charged forward, pointing a gun right at her.

“Don’t scream,” she recalled him saying. “If you start screaming, I will shoot you. They’re going to catch me, but you? You will already be dead.”

Rukundo, terrified, did as she was told. She was ushered into a car and blindfolded so she couldn’t see where she was being taken. After 30 or 40 minutes, the car came to a stop, and Rukundo was pushed into a building and tied to a chair.

She could hear male voices, she told the ABC. One asked her, “You woman, what did you do for this man to pay us to kill you?”

“What are you talking about?” Rukundo demanded.

“Balenga sent us to kill you.”

They were lying. She told them so. And they laughed.

“You’re a fool,” they told her.

There was the sound of a dial tone, and a male voice coming through a speakerphone. It was her husband’s voice.

“Kill her,” he said.

And Rukundo fainted.

Rukundo had met her husband 11 years earlier, right after she arrived in Australia from Burundi, according to the BBC. He was a recent refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and they had the same social worker at the resettlement agency that helped them get on their feet. Since Kalala already knew English, their social worker often recruited him to translate for Rukundo, who spoke Swahili.

They fell in love, moved in together in the Melbourne suburb of Kings Park, and had three children (Rukundo also had five kids from a previous relationship). She learned more about her husband’s past — he had fled a rebel army that had ransacked his village, killing his wife and young son. She also learned more about his character.

“I knew he was a violent man,” Rukundo told the BBC. “But I didn’t believe he can kill me.”

But, it appeared, he could.

Rukundo came to in the strange building somewhere near Bujumbura. The kidnappers were still there, she told the ABC.

They weren’t going to kill her, the men then explained — they didn’t believe in killing women, and they knew her brother. But they would keep her husband’s money and tell him that she was dead. After two days, they set her free on the side of a road, but not before giving her a mobile phone, recordings of their phone conversations with Kalala, and receipts for the $7,000 in Australian dollars they allegedly received in payment, according to Australia’s The Age.

“We just want you to go back, to tell other stupid women like you what happened,” Rukundo said she was told before the gang members drove away.

Shaken, but alive and doggedly determined, Rukundo began plotting her next move. She sought help from the Kenyan and Belgian embassies to return to Australia, according to The Age. Then she called the pastor of her church in Melbourne, she told the BBC, and explained to him what had happened. Without alerting Kalala, the pastor helped her get back home to her neighborhood near Melbourne.

Meanwhile, her husband had told everyone she had died in a tragic accident and the entire community mourned her at her funeral at the family home. On the night of Feb. 22, 2015, just as the widower Kalala waved goodbye to neighbors who had come to comfort him, Rukundo approached him, the very man whose voice she’d heard over the phone five days earlier, ordering that she be killed.

“I felt like somebody who had risen again,” she told the BBC.

Though Kalala initially denied all involvement, Rukundo got him to confess to the crime during a phone conversation that was secretly recorded by police, according to The Age.

“Sometimes Devil can come into someone, to do something, but after they do it they start thinking, ‘Why I did that thing?’ later,” he said, as he begged her to forgive him.

Kalala eventually pleaded guilty to the scheme. He was sentenced to nine years in prison by a judge in Melbourne.

“Had Ms. Rukundo’s kidnappers completed the job, eight children would have lost their mother,” Chief Justice Marilyn Warren said, according to the ABC. “It was premeditated and motivated by unfounded jealousy, anger and a desire to punish Ms. Rukundo.”

Rukundo said that Kalala tried to kill her because he thought she was going to leave him for another man — an accusation she denies.

But her trials are not yet over. Rukundo told the ABC she’s gotten backlash from Melbourne’s Congolese community for reporting Kalala to the police. Someone left threatening messages for her, and she returned home one day to find her back door broken. She now has eight children to raise alone, and has asked the Department of Human Services to help her find a new place to live.

And lying in bed at night, Kalala’s voice still comes to her: “Kill her, kill her,” she told the BBC. “Every night, I see what was happening in those two days with the kidnappers.”

Despite all that, “I will stand up like a strong woman,” she said. “My situation, my past life? That is gone. I’m starting a new life now.”
