Let’s be clear about this: Russia is invading Ukraine right now

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 12 Second

There are two things happening between Ukraine and Russia right now. First, Russian and Ukrainian leaders are meeting in Belarus to negotiate a peace deal in the Ukrainian conflict that Russia insists it has nothing to do with. Second, Russian military forces are crossing the border into Ukraine in what is clearly a hostile invasion and act of war. That includes Russian artillery, Russian tanks, Russian-trained irregular forces, and even uniformed Russian soldiers who have admitted on camera that they are Russian military ordered to invade by their commanders.

But the first piece of that is obfuscating the second. Getting Russia to agree to a peace deal on Ukraine requires lots of careful diplomacy, and that means that no one wants to formally acknowledge Russia's invasion of Ukraine, even though Russia is definitely invading Ukraine right now. That's how you have even the more hawkish figures in the Obama administration making statements like this:

When is a Russian invasion of a neighboring country an incursion and an escalation, but not actually an invasion? When acknowledging that is in an invasion would complicate diplomacy to the point that ending the invasion could become much harder.

But there's more behind this confusion than just careful diplomacy. Russian President Vladimir Putin learned a crucial lesson from Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad last year, when the latter got away with using chemical weapons against his own people.

How to cross an American red line: slowly

That lesson is this: the Western world can set all the red lines it wants — don't use chemical weapons, don't invade sovereign countries — but if you cross that red line just a little bit at a time, inching across over weeks and months, rather than crossing it all at once, then Western publics and politicians will get red-line fatigue and lose interest by the time you're across.

Had Assad just openly dropped tons of sarin gas on his own people one day, the world probably would have responded much more forcefully than it did. Instead, cynically but smartly, Assad spent months using very small amounts of chemical weapons at a time. He created lots of uncertainty around individual incidents: had the chemical weapons killed anyone? Been used at all? Were they used accidentally, or even by rebels who'd stolen them? He kicked inspectors out, then kept them in; he cooperated, then didn't.

By the time Assad fired sarin-filled rockets at the neighborhood of Ghouta, murdering hundreds of civilians, including a number of children, the world had already acclimated to the idea that Assad was probably using chemical weapons. Western leaders could only muster so much outrage, and Western publics could only be so shocked, because everyone sorta, kinda knew that this was already happening and was going unpunished. There was no clear moment at which Assad had crossed the chemical weapons red line, so one day we woke up and realized he was miles on the wrong side of it, and it was too late to muster enough global outrage to push him back.

Putin's stealth invasion, right out in the open

That's what Putin did in eastern Ukraine this summer. First he began quietly supporting the separatist rebels there, then arming them. Then an awful lot of military-trained Russian nationals started slipping in, as Moscow had done before when invading and annexing Crimea in March.

In July, in the weeks before boneheaded rebels shot down a civilian airliner and killed 298 people, Russia began shipping them high-grade military technology, including surface-to-air missile systems. Shortly after the airliner shoot-down, Russian artillery in Russia began firing at Ukrainian military forces in Ukraine — an overt act of war. Then NATO said it caught Russia sending an "incursion" force across the border, which Ukraine claimed to destroy. Later, according to the rebel leader in Ukraine, 30 Russian tanks and up to 1,200 Russian-trained troops did manage to cross. By August 22nd, Russian artillery units were reportedly crossing the border into Ukraine, and a few days later, Ukraine captured "rebels" who admitted to being Russian soldiers sent under formal order.

Russia's meddling in eastern Ukraine became a stealth invasion, which has become an overt invasion. But it was all done just gradually enough, and with just enough uncertainty around each incremental escalation, that Russia has managed to invade a sovereign European country, in the year 2014, without sparking any larger war or the credible threat of any substantial response beyond sanctions.

That's not to argue that Western countries should have responded with more sanctions (even that took substantial cajoling from the US), but the point is that Putin shrewdly prevented it from happening by playing on the vulnerabilities of Western democracies: short attention spans, rapid war fatigue, and the often-unwise pull of popular opinion.

Woman Leaves Spare Bedroom Untouched For Months, You Won’t Believe What She Finds Inside [GRAPHIC IMAGE]

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

A woman opened the door to her rarely-used guest room to get the shock of her life when she saw a giant WASPS’ NEST on the bed.

The estimated 5,000 insects had created a whopper of a home by chewing through bedding – including a blanket and pillow. Pest-control expert John Birkett, who was called to tackle the massive mound of stinging bugs, reckons he’s never seen anything like it in more than four decades on the job. The whopping nest covered the single bed – and went deep inside the mattress at the five-bedroom home in Winchester, Hampshire. John said: “In 45 years I have never seen anything like it. There must have been 5,000 wasps. It was a job to deal with it. I had to put all my protective gear on.

“At one stage there must have been 2,000 wasps buzzing around me. If someone had gone in to the room and not known what it was it would have been pretty serious.” The client lives alone in the five-bedroom house in the St Cross area of the town, and had not been in the spare room for several months, before her son opened the door and discovered the massive nest.

John, who runs Longwood Services exterminators, used chemical spray to kill the insects during a two-hour operation on Sunday afternoon, and reckons the previous biggest nest he has ever found in a bedroom was about the size of a tennis ball.

He said: “I thought ‘what a shame’, but I had a job to do and the client was terrified. Afterwards, the entire room was filled with dead wasps. It was like the apocalypse.”

Prophet, T.B. Joshua reveals the secret behind Ebola

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 33 Second
Nigerian Prophet, T.B. Joshua of The Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) declared in his church service on Sunday, 17th August, 2014 that the killer disease, Ebola that is currently ravaging West Africa is from ‘the pit of hell’.According to Joshua, who led his congregation in prayer for the nations and individuals affected, time was up for the ‘strange ailment’ and life would soon return to normal for the affected countries.
“The so called strange ailment coming from three nations – Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia… satan is the manufacturer, the source,” Joshua defiantly declared to the faithful.“Begin to capture the covenant of that strange sickness,” the cleric then enjoined the congregation.

“Command that strange ailment to come out and go to the pit of hell, in the name of Jesus Christ!”“Because of Christ, people of Liberia, Sierra Leona, Guinea, you are released,” Joshua bellowed, accompanied by the vibrant congregants in a service allegedly viewed by millions worldwide through Joshua’s Christian television station, Emmanuel TV.The controversial Pastor boldly declared that God had spoken to him to pray for the nations affected by Ebola as its reign of fear was close to closure. The Pastor cited to be one of Africa’s most influential individuals, decried the toll Ebola had taken on society, especially in the areas of kinship and kindness.“People are no longer their brother’s keepers because of this strange disease,” he lamented, adding that if someone publicly collapsed from any form of sickness, people would likely abandon the invalid as opposed to lending a helping hand.“Once satan takes love out of people, he has taken life. Satan is not happy that we are one; he is against oneness. He knows when we are not one, we can be defeated,” he fumed.

“The weapon satan is afraid of is love,” Joshua continued.“Satan can fight anything but he cannot fight love.”
The cleric then cited a poignant question asked by Jesus in Luke 18:8: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”He added that the prayer Jesus offered for His followers’ faith not to fail indicated that challenges would arise in the last days which would make many ‘abandon their faith’, Ebola being one of such challenge.Joshua made headlines this week in local and international media for sending 4,000 bottles of ‘Anointing Water’ to the Ebola stricken nation of Sierra Leone on the request of the government, alongside $50,000 in humanitarian aid.Last week, Joshua had to debunk a rumour attributed to him that went viral in Nigeria claiming that bathing in salt water would prevent the disease. With over 1.2million followers on Facebook and 90,000 YouTube subscribers, it is easy to understand that he is touted to be among Africa’s most influential individuals.

According to him, “Dora, herself is also my wife and we are all sharing in the pain of her death but since they sidelined me in controlling the weather, they will see rainfall today (That is Thursday) and throughout the week unless they do the needful.

“Let it also be on record that I am not insisting on loosing the heaven tomorrow because I was not consulted but because they went to see other rain makers with lots of gift items to control the weather which they know I can do without charging anything. We shall test powers tomorrow” he boasted.

The traditional practitioner who also claimed he uses what he described as equatorial mazmazu on the moon and rings of the world in the sun also alleged that some of his kinsmen are hitherto withholding a National award given to him by President Goodluck Jonathan and however warned those in custody of the award to make it available for him before it will be too late.

“I was told that Mr. President gave me an award but some people are still with it and I want to use this opportunity to let Mr. President know that am yet to get the award” he said

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 25 Second

Former minister, Professor Dora Akunyili, willingly forfeited her American residency in favour of a Nigerian passport at a US immigration point, her husband has revealed.

Speaking at the requiem mass in her honour held at the Pro Cathedral Area 3, Garki, Abuja, on Tuesday, Dr. Nkem Akunyili narrated the incident to a stunned congregation. He said: “Dorothy is an elephant and if I start talking about her we will not leave.

We went to Florida, and there at the immigration, they told her, Look, you are an American citizen (because she won the visa lottery and that was what favoured us). And here you are, you have a Nigerian diplomatic passport, you must surrender one.

She used her left hand to drop her green card and retained her diplomatic passport. So you can see the level of her love for this country. “Once in her local government, they brought a trailer load of fertilisers, what did Dorothy do?

She shared all to the community.‎ They told her that this was not how it is done and she said, this is how it will be done.

Even as a professor if you see her in the home… she will hold water for me to wash my hand. And I will tell her, Mummy, you are a professor and she will say, I married Nkem before I became a professor.”

Akunyili also narrated the heart-breaking moment when his wife cancer was diagnosed. “One day‎, we went for medical check-up and we found a lump at her lower abdomen.

Doctors said she had seven months to live. “She told me, ‘You are not the husband I married, you are always dejected what happened?’

And I told her that the doctors said she had seven months to live. She said doctors have spoken, God has not spoken, seven months became two years and three months. “I want to thank our children, they were always there contributing what they could.

We had contact with all the best medical doctors in the world because three of her children are doctors in US. Jonathan and Dora's husband, Nkem Jonathan and Dora’s husband, Nkem “Dora had a message for this country it was a message of love, courage and steadfastness.

Even when she was in pain she still attended the national conference‎. You all heard what she said at the conference that ‘a country grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they will not live to enjoy’. “She told me she will serve this country with the last drop of her blood. Many did not want her to go because of her health, she said she will go to the conference.‎ She said Nigeria first and me second.”

15 Things Nigerians In Diaspora Miss while Living Abroad

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 42 Second

There is no doubt that living abroad is one of the desires of most Nigerians, it is one of the most unforgettable and incredible experiences that anyone will love to partake in.

However, there are quite a few things that you may miss outside Nigeria. Yes, you may have taken these things for granted, wait till you have spent few months abroad, by then, the excitement and fun of the new city must have worn off. This is when you may start missing the some things about Nigeria and you’ll shockingly be longing for them.

Here are 15 things Nigerians miss while living abroad:

1.Visitation from friends, neighbours and families

There is nothing as unique as the visits we get from our friends and neighbours in Nigeria, especially from our families in the village or our home town. During these visits, food is served and stories are shared. It is one experience that brings oneness and bond between people. Most people living abroad do not enjoy this luxury and they miss home badly when they are lying alone in their apartments.

2. Free car parks

You don’t need to worry about traffic tickets when you are in Nigeria. There is no police ticket for you when you default in your parking space, it is either you are called out to re-park your car or warned. When you park wrongly abroad, you pay the penalty fee. In Nigeria, you can park an airplane on the street without stress.

3. Street shops

You would definitely miss the street shops in Nigeria when you travel abroad. The reason is, these street shops provide you with everything you may need early in the morning or late in the night when the markets are closed. On every street, you will find Aboki with small kiosk selling a variety of household items or a pharmacy store right at the corner of the street.

4. Street Jamz

You must have realized that most developed countries are noise free, sometimes; you can feel a pin drop because making a noise is regarded as an offence. Come to Nigeria and experience something that will blow your mind, the jamz that comes from different shops can be exciting because it is one avenue where you can know the hottest tracks in the music industry without surfing the internet.

5. The TV shows

Nigerian TV soaps and reality shows are like no other, you can’t compare them with American or British TV shows because they are have been uniquely produced. Some of the TV soaps have good story and once you start viewing them, you will get hooked. Most Nigerians living abroad miss these shows because they tell a lot about our lifestyles and how to tackle most problems we encounter in our daily lives.

6. Lagos bus conductors

Photo Source: Bankole Oluwafemi on Flickr

Even though, bus conductors in Lagos can be annoying, you can’t but miss the way they behave especially when they have a disagreement with someone in the bus. It’s always an interesting and memorable scenario.

7. Speaking daily vernacular – Pidgin English

Pidgin English makes communication very easy among Nigerians. Nigerians living abroad miss speaking their favourite slangs such as ‘How far?’, ‘Wetin dey happen?’, ‘How you dey?’.

8. Owambe Parties

Nigerian parties are famous for some reasons – the fashionable clothes, foods, friends and families. They are the only massive weekend parties in the world and also the grooviest. Owambe party is a norm in Nigeria and if you like it or not, you will find yourself in one, celebrating with friends and families, dancing, eating and drinking with them. After all, a great celebration reveals itself wherever there is food, music and of course, Nigerians.

9. Market haggling

You may never know what you have until you have travelled abroad and discovered how difficult it is to bargain on some items because they come with price tags. In Nigeria, everything is very affordable and you can easily buy things without price tags. You have the freedom of down pricing every product with the sellers which is what you may never experience in malls and supermarkets abroad.

10. People who do everything for you

You can not get free labour outside Africa which is one thing you would definitely miss. There are a lot of relatives, friends and neighbours who would love to wash for you, cook and clean for you without asking for anything.

11. Affordable housing

Life in Nigeria may not be so rosy when compared to the life outside the shores of Africa, but when you calculate how much you are spending abroad and what half of that money can fetch for you in Nigerian housing, you would love to jump the next air plane to live in Nigeria again.

12. Cool weather

The weather condition in Nigeria is beautiful. There is no need to worry about snow, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes. The sun may be scorching but it is better than the fear of unfriendly weather conditions outside the country.

13. Nigerian hospitality

The Nigerian police may not be your friend but the people in Nigeria are always out to help you in one way or the other. Nigerians don’t mind their business when things happen and this is what makes them unique. We bet you would miss this hospitality if you’ve ever experienced it once in Nigeria.

14. Street foods

Many times we have heard people say that they can also get Nigerian foods abroad especially in London but we’re sure it can never be like it is back home. Nigerian foods found in London are either overpriced or packaged to make it look like it is ‘made in London’. Naija street foods have a unique flavour that you can’t find anywhere. For instance: Akara has a local taste that you won’t trade for anything, its delicious and smells good.

15. Daily Lagos Scenes

There is nothing as interesting as Lagos city’s daily scenes. It’s been said that, “If you can live in Lagos, you can live in any city in the world”.

People living abroad miss the daily scenes of Lagos – the traffic jams, the street vendors, Lagos transport hustles, Agbero shouting destination names – “Oshodi Oshodi’, the odd feeling they get when people push past them without saying sorry, the fights, street dance performances and many more.

There is no place like home. What do you miss most about Nigeria? Share with us in the comment below:

NATO Plots Defense Against Russia

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 0 Second

A freight car loaded with self-propelled howitzers is seen at a railway station in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Rostov region, near the border with Ukraine, August 24, 2014.

The 28 NATO members are preparing for their summit meeting in Wales in early September. The main topic of discussion: the notion of collective defense in light of Russia’s recent actions against Ukraine.

Simply put, NATO’s collective defense posture means that an attack on one of its 28 members is an attack on all of them.

In a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance “must remain ready, willing and able to defend its almost one billion citizens.”

Rasmussen went on to say NATO leaders must take steps to make the alliance “fitter, faster, and more flexible to address future challenges from wherever they come.”

NATO's collective defense

NATO’s collective defense doctrine is in the spotlight, given Russia’s recent actions against Ukraine: its annexation of the Crimean peninsula and its backing of Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Admiral James Stavridis, former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO, said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggressive behavior will backfire.

“President Putin’s strategy is going to be a strategic failure. In effect it is strengthening NATO, it is instilling more resolve in the alliance and will create even more cohesion than was the case before the events in Ukraine,” he said.

Russia’s behavior has also instilled apprehension and even fear in some countries – such as those in the Baltic States – that Moscow might try to invade a NATO country.

Sean Kay, a NATO expert at Ohio Wesleyan University, assessed the balance of forces.

“In terms of defending the NATO allies against Russia – the NATO allies have an overwhelming military advantage in terms of their combined capabilities,” he said. “The structure of power singularly is in the hands of the West. So it’s a question of how they want to best leverage the future relationship with Russia given its recent behavior.”

Stavridis agreed, saying: “I don’t stay up at night worrying about Russia’s ability to invade a NATO nation."

NATO asked to stand firm

But to allay the fears of those countries who feel threatened by Russia’s behavior, Stavridis said NATO summit leaders must take firm action.

“There should be an enhanced number of aircraft patrolling the borders of the alliance,” he said.

“We should have larger and more robust maritime deployments both north in the Baltic and south in the Black Sea. We should, in my view, support the Ukrainian armed forces with equipment, training, cyber support advice and help them prepare in case Russia takes the next step which would be an overt invasion of Ukraine," Stavridis added.

Looking ahead, Stavridis sees increased tension between NATO and Russia – but not a return to a Cold War era.

“During the Cold War, six million people faced off against each other across the Fulda Gap,” he said. “Huge navies patrolled the world and we were on a hair-trigger alert. We had nuclear weapons cocked, aimed, loaded and ready to fire, he said. “There were proxy wars around the world – it was the dominant political and military activity of 20 to 30 years. No, we are not headed back to that.”

Whoopi Goldberg Reportedly Leaving ‘The View’ Due To Ongoing Feud With Rosie O’Donnell

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 7 Second

Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O’Donnell only have a few weeks until they are due to premiere on The View. However, it seems that all is not peachy back at the ranch. Rumors have been sparked in the media which suggest that Goldberg might leave the show due to her ongoing arguments with O’Donnell.

Radar Online reported late last week that, even though Goldberg has occupied the moderator seat for a while now on the show, Rosie wants it back.

An insider told the publication: “It doesn’t matter to Rosie that Whoopi has sat there for the last several years. Rosie doesn’t want to be sitting anywhere but back in her old spot.”

In addition to that little bit of gossip, the insider went on to reveal that in Rosie’s mind she is the matriarch on the show and not Whoopi:

“In Rosie’s mind, this is once again her show. Whoopi won’t be giving it up, and Rosie even suggested they trade seats every other week. It’s all a power trip for Rosie, which is resulting in tension on the staff.”

According to another report, even though Whoopi Goldberg just signed a four-year contact with ABC, she allegedly already wants out.

A source close to Whoopi told reporters that the show is, in fact, holding her back from other aspirations she has: “Whoopi regrets roping herself in like that and is trying to figure a way out. She wants to do other projects and feels network honchos are holding her back.”

Apart from the feud with O’Donnell, Whoopi Goldberg reportedly dissed the show’s executive producer Barbara Walters, who retired in May. In an outburst, Whoopi was reported as saying: “I’ve been working with a cranky 85-year-old woman who’s been mad about everything for two years, and I need a break.”

Perhaps Whoopi’s comments that she “needed a break” were more loaded than originally thought and that, despite signing a contract with ABC, she can’t take the ongoing arguments with Rosie O’Donnell on the show.

Sometimes, in the world of media hype, it is difficult for the outsider to know if the feuds which erupt from time to time between celebrities are genuine, or a just publicity ploy to improve ratings.

Best to stand back and see how this plays out
