7,000-Year-Old Human Bones Suggest New Date for Light-Skin Gene

Read Time:3 Minute, 20 Second

An ancient European hunter-gatherer man had dark skin and blue eyes, a new genetic analysis has revealed.

The analysis of the man, who lived in modern-day Spain only about 7,000 years ago, shows light-skin genes in Europeans evolved much more recently than previously thought.

The findings, which were detailed today (Jan. 26) in the journal Nature, also hint that light skin evolved not to adjust to the lower-light conditions in Europe compared with Africa, but instead to the new diet that emerged after the agricultural revolution, said study co-author Carles Lalueza-Fox, a paleogenomics researcher at Pompeu Fabra University in Spain.

Sunlight changes

Many scientists have believed that lighter skin gradually arose in Europeans starting around 40,000 years ago, soon after people left tropical Africa for Europe's higher latitudes. The hunter-gatherer's dark skin pushes this date forward to only 7,000 years ago, suggesting that at least some humans lived considerably longer than thought in Europe before losing the dark pigmentation that evolved under Africa's sun.

"It was assumed that the lighter skin was something needed in high latitudes, to synthesize vitamin D in places where UV light is lower than in the tropics," Lalueza-Fox told LiveScience.

Scientists had assumed this was true because people need vitamin D for healthy bones, and can synthesize it in the skin with energy from the sun's UV rays, but darker skin, like that of the hunter-gatherer man, prevents UV-ray absorption.

But the new discovery shows that latitude alone didn't drive the evolution of Europeans' light skin. If it had, light skin would have become widespread in Europeans millennia earlier, Lalueza-Fox said.

Mysterious find

In 2006, hikers discovered two male skeletons buried in a labyrinthine cave known as La Braña-Arintero, in the Cantabrian Mountains of Spain. [Images of the Ancient Skeletons]

At first, officials thought the skeletons may have been recent murder victims. But then, an analysis revealed the skeletons were about 7,000 years old, and had no signs of trauma. The bodies were covered with red soil, characteristic of Paleolithic burial sites, Lalueza-Fox said.

At the time of the discovery, genetic techniques weren't advanced enough to analyze the skeletons. Several years later, the team revisited the skeletons and extracted DNA from a molar tooth in one skeleton. (The other skeleton had been sitting in water for millennia, so his DNA was more degraded, Lalueza-Fox said.)

Blue eyes, dark skin

The new analysis of that DNA now shows the man had the gene mutation for blue eyes, but not the European mutations for lighter skin.

The DNA also shows that the man was more closely related to modern-day northern Europeans than to southern Europeans.

The discovery may explain why baby blues are more common in Scandinavia. It's been thought that poor conditions in northern Europe delayed the agricultural revolution there, so Scandinavians may have more genetic traces of their hunter-gatherer past — including a random blue-eye mutation that emerged in the small population of ancient hunter-gatherers, Lalueza-Fox said.

Skin changes

The finding implies that for most of their evolutionary history, Europeans were not what many people today would call 'Caucasian', said Guido Barbujani, president of the Associazione Genetica Italiana in Ferrara, Italy, who was not involved in the study.

Instead, "what seems likely, then, is that the dietary changes accompanying the so-called Neolithic revolution, or the transition from food collection to food production, might have caused, or contributed to cause, this change," Barbujani said.

In the food-production theory, the cereal-rich diet of Neolithic farmers lacked vitamin D, so Europeans rapidly lost their dark-skin pigmentation only once they switched to agriculture, because it was only at that point that they had to synthesize vitamin D from the sun more readily

One woman, 2 husbands; First-ever reported case in Ghana

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 47 Second

A 32-year-old woman  and her father have been charged with bigamy by the police after she successfully got married to two different men legally in Ghana.

According to a report by The Finder newspaper Patience Belinda Gyamfi (the woman at the centre of investigations) got married to Maximus Anumah, a member of staff at the 37 Military Hospital in 2012 and to Audrey Atikpo in January 2013 while she was still married to the former.

The newspaper reported that Belinda's marriage to Maximus was held at a church in Labadi and registered at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) while and the second marriage was registered in Somanya in the Eastern Region.

The report indicated that in mid-January 2013, Belinda, who had not been blessed with a fruit of the womb from her marriage with Anumah sought permission from her husband to go to Edumfa Prayer Camp in the Central Region for fasting and prayers to seek divine intervention so they could have children, to which her husband granted the request.

It said unknown to Mr Anumah, Belinda, her father and some family members had arranged a secret wedding with another man, Audrey Atikpo, who came down from the United States of America (USA). How they met is yet to be established.

The report said, according to the second marriage certificate, Belinda got married to Atikpo on January 31, 2013 and registered the marriage at the Somanya Magistrate Court.

Atikpo then rented an apartment at East Legon where he stayed with Belinda for some days and went back to the US to process the necessary documents for Belinda to join him there.

According to The Finder report, when Atikpo left, Belinda packed back to her first husband's house at Labadi in mid-February 2013.

It said, upon her return, Belinda always found faults with anything that Anumah did, resulting in frequent misunderstandings.

Some months later, Belinda's father brought drinks and GH¢300 to Anumah saying his daughter wanted divorce, but Anumah rejected the items, the report said.

Being suspicious of his wife's calls from a gentleman and a woman from the US, Anumah enquired about the calls and Belinda told him that the man (Belinda's second husband Atikpo) was her cousin and the woman (Belinda's mother in-law in US) her aunty.

Not satisfied with the answers, Anumah started searching for his own clues and it was in the course of the search, Anumah found a piece of paper in their room bearing the name and address of Atikpo, The Finder reported.

According to the newspaper, Anumah logged on to Facebook, searched for Audrey Atikpo and sent him a friendship request.

Upon accepting the request, and seeing Anumah and Belinda's wedding photos in Anumah's Facebook photos, Atikpo confronted Anumah and the two men both claimed to be the rightful husband of Belinda, The Finder said.

According to The Finder, Atikpo called Belinda from the US and confronted her on the matter and the following day, Belinda packed all her belongings from Anumah's house and went back to the house Atikpo rented for her at East Legon.

Feeling fooled and cheated by Belinda, Anumah reported the case to the police, who are currently investigating the matter.

Jega Accuses Politicians of Undermining Credible Elections

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Attahiru Jega, has stated that unless politicians do away with their do-or-die attitude and crooked means of winning elections at all cost, the credibility of elections would always be undermined. He lamented that the greatest challenge towards the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria, is the general tendency among some politicians who are bent on winning election by hook or by crook, stressing that unless the politicians changed their unpatriotic attitude, the integrity of elections will always be undermined no matter the efforts of the commission in ensuring credible elections. Jega who featured as a guest on the personality progrmme of the Kaduna-based Liberty radio maintained that some of these politician always want to persuade the officials of the commission to do them favour, adding that if such overtures fail, the politicians will want to intimidate, harass or threaten the officials. This, according to him, is “obviously the mentality of do or die, or winning by hook or crook means which is a dominant tendency in the mindset of politicians in Nigeria. Jega said “this has to change because if it does not change, no matter what adequate and efficient preparation of the commission the integrity of the election will always be undermined.” He however said nobody has ever intimidated or attempted to influence or bribe him to manipulate elections results in the country.

Pope Francis Presides Over Some Really Bad Auguries

0 0
Read Time:35 Second

Here is some news that's quite literally inauspicious: two white doves released by children standing next to Pope Francis as a peace gesture were attacked this morning shortly after taking flight. Their attackers? A seagull and a large black crow.

The spectacle justifiably freaked out the audience gathered in Vatican City. One dove got away with only minimal feather loss, but CBS isn't quite sure what happened to the other dove, which the crow, i.e. Satan's wingman, pecked repeatedly. All of this means, of course, that one (if not several) of the old classical deities is playing a little prank on the unimaginative monotheists gathered for their solemn Sunday ritual.

Greatest Comeback: The Dammam Miracle VS Cape Town wonders

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

The comeback of the Home Based Super Eagles against the Atlas Lions of Morocco at the ongoing African Nations Championship in South Africa brings to mind the 1989 comeback by the country’s Flying Eagles against Soviet Union (Russia), dubbed the Dammam miracle.

Nigeria completed one of the most amazing comebacks in modern football when they came from three goals down at half-time to beat a shocked Morocco 4-3 and progress to the semis of the CHAN tournament in a compelling game played at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Atlas Lions had raced to a 3-0 in the first 45 minutes but Nigeria’s never-say-die attitude saw them overhaul that mammoth deficit in an electrifying second half to take the match into extra-time.

Buoyed by the second half fight-back, they stunned the shell-shocked Moroccans with a second half extra-time winner.

It was similar to the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship in Saudi Arabia. In the quarter finals match played on 25th February, 1989 at Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium, Dammam; Soviet Union raced to four goals lead as at 46 minutes, courtesy goals from Kiriakov (30min, 58 min),Tedeev (45 min) and Salenko (46 min), before the Olatunde Disu tutored team came back with goals from Ohenhen (61, 75 min), Elijah (83min) and Ugbade (84min). The team forced extra time before sending the Russian boys home during a penalty shootout that ended five goals to three in favour of the Nigerians. Nigeria came second at the tournament, losing to Portugal in the final.

WHICH DO YOU THINK IS THE GREATEST COMEBACK IN THE COUNTRY’S FOOTBALL HISTORY? YOU CAN ALSO ADD YOURS.

Funny that: Bad roads scare suitors from Nsukka –Lawmaker

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 25 Second

A lawmaker representing Nsukka East State Constituency at the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Chinedu Nwamba, has lamented that due to bad roads prevalent in his constituency, young men especially from outside the local government now find it difficult to come to their place to marry their young girls.
“Our girls are not getting married any longer because of bad roads. Once some of them come to the place for the first time especially to enquire about taking a girl’s hand in marriage and discover the poor state of the road, the suitors hardly come back and this is affecting our girls,” Nwamba lamented
His observation and comment drew laughter and applaud from the House members and the audience but it did not deter the lawmaker from expressing the despicable state of roads in his constituency.

Hon. Nwamba, who disclosed this during the deliberation on the possible passage of the 2014 Appropriation Bill presented to the House last year by Governor Chime, noted that the roads in their area, especially the Eha- Mbu-Neke Road was in a sorry state and should be restored to give access to his people.
While applauding the state governor for the budget of actualization, he pleaded that the road in question should be rehabilitated to give the people of his area a sense of belonging.
Speaking in like manner, Hon. Edward Ubosi, member representing Enugu East Urban, urged the state government to dualise the Nike Lake road because of the vehicular traffic being witnessed on the road since the Ugwuogo-Ikem-Opi Road became operational, with many motorists using the road to get to Nsukka instead of the Nineth Mile-Makurdi Road.
