Nigeria: Govt Shutdown: Presidency dares APC

Read Time:6 Minute, 6 Second

ABUJA—The  Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) were yesterday locked in a war of words over the opposition party’s directive to its members to shut down the affairs of the Federal Government. This came as APC House members, weekend, vowed to heed the party’s directive.

Flaying the APC’s threat to resort to self-help over the crisis in Rivers State, the Presidency vowed that appropriate sanctions by security agents would be applied to any effort to derail the normal working of government.

The APC in a sharp rebuttal to criticisms over the directive issued last Thursday vowed to press on with the directive, saying that the weekend success of the pro-APC rally in Rivers State was an indicator of the success of the directive. The party, however, alleged that the impunity it is fighting in Rivers State has also spread to Gombe State where it claimed its posters and banners were being brought down by government agents.

The prospect of the APC having its way in the Senate were, however, downplayed at the weekend by Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, SAN who said the Senate would consider all issues without partisan consideration.

Elder statesman, Tanko Yakasai, meanwhile, has flayed the APC directive saying it was capable of truncating democracy.

Yakasai in a press statement issued in Kano, yesterday, declared: “I pray that this country will not reach a stage where the recklessness of some members of the political class will lead to the truncation of our nascent democracy.”

Meanwhile, a non-government group, Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria, CNPD, weekend, flayed the APC directive, saying the party had put partisan interest above national considerations.

We’ll match action with action— Presidency
Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak while flaying the APC resolution said it was a recipe for anarchy and vowed that whatever actions were made towards self-help, particularly in Rivers State would be matched with appropriate reaction by security agencies.

Gulak in a statement said: “The Federal Government has directed the law enforcement agencies to take seriously all statements aimed at inciting violence and disturbing the peace.”

He said no responsible administration would fold its arms and watch politicians incite their supporters to take up arms or resort to extra-judicial means to resolve disputes when there are legally established channels for conflict resolution in the country.

Noting that the Federal Government has a responsibility to protect all Nigerians and ensure that every Nigerian is free to pursue his business and happiness in an atmosphere of concord and tranquility, he said: “The Federal Government fully recognises the constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, we regard such enshrined constitutional guarantees of basic rights of Nigerians as the pillars of democratic governance; we know that the full enjoyment of such rights come with personal and civic responsibilities on individuals and groups, it is therefore regrettable and unfortunate, that APC which prides itself as a progressive party, should go all out to incite its supporters to resort to self help to redress their grievances”.

According to Gulak, “this is a display of desperation and crass opportunism by a political party that wants to win at all cost. There are rules of engagement and we expect all parties to abide by such rules rather than fomenting trouble in order to gain media attention.

Our crtics are ignorant — APC
The APC in a sharp reaction through its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed described critics of its directive to its National Assembly members to shut down the Federal Government as those who are either ignorant of the workings of democracy or those who have chosen to play to the gallery for pecuniary gains.

Noting that the directive was already having a positive effect on the situation in Rivers State, he noted that the members of the Save Rivers Movement (SRM) were able to, for the first time, stage a peaceful rally last Saturday.

“This is exactly what we are saying, that Nigerians, irrespective of their party leaning, who wish to stage a peaceful protest anywhere in the country must be able to do so without the police looking away while hired goons attack them. It is all about justice, fairness and equity, without which democracy will not thrive. We will be watching to see if what happened on Saturday represents a paradigm shift in Rivers or it is just a flash in the pan,” the party said.

APC said there is nothing anti-democratic, anti-people or inciting about the directive, which is aimed at ending the reign of impunity in Rivers State before it spreads to other parts of the country and truncates the nation’s democracy, wondering why it is so difficult for the President to act, for almost a year, as a part of the country he was elected to govern goes up in flames.

“We hereby reiterate the directive, which is a product of deep thinking and robust debate within our party’s NEC to save our democracy, and we commend our members in the National Assembly for their unequivocal support for our stand, and for understanding that filibustering or legislative non-cooperation are veritable tools of democracy,” it said.

The party said already, copy cat attacks and intimidation of APC members have been launched by the government and the police in Gombe, because they have been watching the impunity being committed in Rivers.

“All over Gombe, our party flags, billboards and posters are being vandalized by hoodlums aided and abetted by the police. Our youth supporters are being arrested while our members are being threatened by the police and the state government officials.

“They say the non-approval of the 2014 budget will pauperize Nigerians, as if the yearly ritual of budget passing since 1999 has benefited anyone but the fat cats. In any case, of what use is a budget when the lives of citizens are at stake? Are budgets not made for the people? Do they understand that even the budgets are based largely on earnings from oil, which we cannot even produce if the violence in Rivers escalates and spreads to other oil-producing states?

We’ll heed APC directive — Osagie

APC whip in the House of Representatives, Rep. Osagie while giving his readiness to rally the party faithful to heed the directive told Vanguard:

“I am a member of a political party and I cannot disagree with my party. All I can say right now is that even the deaf can hear, the blind can see that this government is not only rudderless, it is involved in huge illegalities and unconstitutionalities; it has no respect for the rule of law, neither does it have respect for the right of citizens.”

Senate’ll be non-partisan  — Ndoma-Egba
Senate Leader, Senator Ndoma-Egba, SAN, however, countered the prospect saying that senators would look at issues in the Senate without partisan considerations.

“My experience of the Senate for the years that I have been there is that it is not a partisan institution”, he said

Police Find Penis Enlargement Pills in Justin Bieber’s Car

Read Time:53 Second

Police in Miami found more than just drugs and alcohol yesterday when they arrested teen pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Sources close to the investigation say that in addition to the prescription medication Xanax, the cops also found a “significant” stash of over-the-counter penis enlargement pills in the glove compartment.

Records show that law enforcement confiscated 1 bottle of Enzyte, 2 bottles of Erectzan, 3 bottles of Rock-It-Man and 1 bottle of MaxURPrick. Police tested the pills to see if Bieber was using the bottles to store illegal drugs, but chemical analysis showed they were purely for male enhancement.

Bieber, who was charged with a DUI this morning, is no stranger to legal trouble. He has been warned numerous times for his drug use and aggressive driving. Just last week police searched his home after neighbors reported an egging incident.

Many observers have speculated that Bieber’s hyper-masculine, macho behavior has been an attempt to compensate for the fact he has an extremely tiny penis – a hypothesis which today’s events have confirmed.

2014 World Cup: Massive boost for Ghana as injured Gyimah out for only SIX WEEKS

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 4 Second

Injured Ghana midfielder Edwin Gyimah is expected to be out of action for up to six weeks which means he will fit to play for the Black Stars at the World Cup in June if he is selected by coach Kwesi Appiah.

The South Afirca-based utility player, who plays for SuperSport United, will be on the sidelines with a badly twisted ankle.

He is expected to return to action by the middle of March, two months before the World Cup starts in Brazil.

“Gyimah is definitely out of the game against AmaZulu (on Tuesday) due to the injury sustained against Pirates,” revealed United team manager Coltrane Munyai.

“He should be out for four to six weeks.”
It was originally feared that he would be out of action for six months which means he would not be fit to play in the tournament which ends in July.

The Ghanaian sustained the blow in  Matsatsantsa's recent 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates in Soweto http://www.kickoff.com/match-report/9496/orlando-pirates-vs-supersport-united-psl .

His return will give coach Appiah lots of options and headache when he names his squad for the World Cup.

Gyimah is on the periphery of the Black Stars squad.

7,000-Year-Old Human Bones Suggest New Date for Light-Skin Gene

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 20 Second

An ancient European hunter-gatherer man had dark skin and blue eyes, a new genetic analysis has revealed.

The analysis of the man, who lived in modern-day Spain only about 7,000 years ago, shows light-skin genes in Europeans evolved much more recently than previously thought.

The findings, which were detailed today (Jan. 26) in the journal Nature, also hint that light skin evolved not to adjust to the lower-light conditions in Europe compared with Africa, but instead to the new diet that emerged after the agricultural revolution, said study co-author Carles Lalueza-Fox, a paleogenomics researcher at Pompeu Fabra University in Spain.

Sunlight changes

Many scientists have believed that lighter skin gradually arose in Europeans starting around 40,000 years ago, soon after people left tropical Africa for Europe's higher latitudes. The hunter-gatherer's dark skin pushes this date forward to only 7,000 years ago, suggesting that at least some humans lived considerably longer than thought in Europe before losing the dark pigmentation that evolved under Africa's sun.

"It was assumed that the lighter skin was something needed in high latitudes, to synthesize vitamin D in places where UV light is lower than in the tropics," Lalueza-Fox told LiveScience.

Scientists had assumed this was true because people need vitamin D for healthy bones, and can synthesize it in the skin with energy from the sun's UV rays, but darker skin, like that of the hunter-gatherer man, prevents UV-ray absorption.

But the new discovery shows that latitude alone didn't drive the evolution of Europeans' light skin. If it had, light skin would have become widespread in Europeans millennia earlier, Lalueza-Fox said.

Mysterious find

In 2006, hikers discovered two male skeletons buried in a labyrinthine cave known as La Braña-Arintero, in the Cantabrian Mountains of Spain. [Images of the Ancient Skeletons]

At first, officials thought the skeletons may have been recent murder victims. But then, an analysis revealed the skeletons were about 7,000 years old, and had no signs of trauma. The bodies were covered with red soil, characteristic of Paleolithic burial sites, Lalueza-Fox said.

At the time of the discovery, genetic techniques weren't advanced enough to analyze the skeletons. Several years later, the team revisited the skeletons and extracted DNA from a molar tooth in one skeleton. (The other skeleton had been sitting in water for millennia, so his DNA was more degraded, Lalueza-Fox said.)

Blue eyes, dark skin

The new analysis of that DNA now shows the man had the gene mutation for blue eyes, but not the European mutations for lighter skin.

The DNA also shows that the man was more closely related to modern-day northern Europeans than to southern Europeans.

The discovery may explain why baby blues are more common in Scandinavia. It's been thought that poor conditions in northern Europe delayed the agricultural revolution there, so Scandinavians may have more genetic traces of their hunter-gatherer past — including a random blue-eye mutation that emerged in the small population of ancient hunter-gatherers, Lalueza-Fox said.

Skin changes

The finding implies that for most of their evolutionary history, Europeans were not what many people today would call 'Caucasian', said Guido Barbujani, president of the Associazione Genetica Italiana in Ferrara, Italy, who was not involved in the study.

Instead, "what seems likely, then, is that the dietary changes accompanying the so-called Neolithic revolution, or the transition from food collection to food production, might have caused, or contributed to cause, this change," Barbujani said.

In the food-production theory, the cereal-rich diet of Neolithic farmers lacked vitamin D, so Europeans rapidly lost their dark-skin pigmentation only once they switched to agriculture, because it was only at that point that they had to synthesize vitamin D from the sun more readily

One woman, 2 husbands; First-ever reported case in Ghana

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 47 Second

A 32-year-old woman  and her father have been charged with bigamy by the police after she successfully got married to two different men legally in Ghana.

According to a report by The Finder newspaper Patience Belinda Gyamfi (the woman at the centre of investigations) got married to Maximus Anumah, a member of staff at the 37 Military Hospital in 2012 and to Audrey Atikpo in January 2013 while she was still married to the former.

The newspaper reported that Belinda's marriage to Maximus was held at a church in Labadi and registered at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) while and the second marriage was registered in Somanya in the Eastern Region.

The report indicated that in mid-January 2013, Belinda, who had not been blessed with a fruit of the womb from her marriage with Anumah sought permission from her husband to go to Edumfa Prayer Camp in the Central Region for fasting and prayers to seek divine intervention so they could have children, to which her husband granted the request.

It said unknown to Mr Anumah, Belinda, her father and some family members had arranged a secret wedding with another man, Audrey Atikpo, who came down from the United States of America (USA). How they met is yet to be established.

The report said, according to the second marriage certificate, Belinda got married to Atikpo on January 31, 2013 and registered the marriage at the Somanya Magistrate Court.

Atikpo then rented an apartment at East Legon where he stayed with Belinda for some days and went back to the US to process the necessary documents for Belinda to join him there.

According to The Finder report, when Atikpo left, Belinda packed back to her first husband's house at Labadi in mid-February 2013.

It said, upon her return, Belinda always found faults with anything that Anumah did, resulting in frequent misunderstandings.

Some months later, Belinda's father brought drinks and GH¢300 to Anumah saying his daughter wanted divorce, but Anumah rejected the items, the report said.

Being suspicious of his wife's calls from a gentleman and a woman from the US, Anumah enquired about the calls and Belinda told him that the man (Belinda's second husband Atikpo) was her cousin and the woman (Belinda's mother in-law in US) her aunty.

Not satisfied with the answers, Anumah started searching for his own clues and it was in the course of the search, Anumah found a piece of paper in their room bearing the name and address of Atikpo, The Finder reported.

According to the newspaper, Anumah logged on to Facebook, searched for Audrey Atikpo and sent him a friendship request.

Upon accepting the request, and seeing Anumah and Belinda's wedding photos in Anumah's Facebook photos, Atikpo confronted Anumah and the two men both claimed to be the rightful husband of Belinda, The Finder said.

According to The Finder, Atikpo called Belinda from the US and confronted her on the matter and the following day, Belinda packed all her belongings from Anumah's house and went back to the house Atikpo rented for her at East Legon.

Feeling fooled and cheated by Belinda, Anumah reported the case to the police, who are currently investigating the matter.

Jega Accuses Politicians of Undermining Credible Elections

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Attahiru Jega, has stated that unless politicians do away with their do-or-die attitude and crooked means of winning elections at all cost, the credibility of elections would always be undermined. He lamented that the greatest challenge towards the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria, is the general tendency among some politicians who are bent on winning election by hook or by crook, stressing that unless the politicians changed their unpatriotic attitude, the integrity of elections will always be undermined no matter the efforts of the commission in ensuring credible elections. Jega who featured as a guest on the personality progrmme of the Kaduna-based Liberty radio maintained that some of these politician always want to persuade the officials of the commission to do them favour, adding that if such overtures fail, the politicians will want to intimidate, harass or threaten the officials. This, according to him, is “obviously the mentality of do or die, or winning by hook or crook means which is a dominant tendency in the mindset of politicians in Nigeria. Jega said “this has to change because if it does not change, no matter what adequate and efficient preparation of the commission the integrity of the election will always be undermined.” He however said nobody has ever intimidated or attempted to influence or bribe him to manipulate elections results in the country.

Babajide Olowodola, has cautioned politicians against unguarded utterances that are capable of heating up the polity. Olowodola made the call Sunday , during the church’s Annual Thanksgiving, against the backdrop of recent statements by some politicians, particularly the ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir El-rufai , who was quoted to have predicted that the forthcoming elections would be violent. He urged Nigerians to treat the statements with a pinch of salt, assuring that Nigeria will grow stronger against all odds.
