The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a Nigerian student, Vitalis Dike, studying in Malaysia, for drug trafficking.
Dike was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, during the screening of passengers bound for Malaysia via a Qatari flight.
The suspect recently escaped death in the Asian country when he was arrested for being in possession of 1.430kg of methamphetamine.
Drug trafficking in Malaysia attracts the death penalty.
The 31-year-old suspect had 1.430kg of white crystalline powder that tested positive for methamphetamine concealed inside his luggage.
A native of Orlu, Imo State, Dike told Punch Metro that he was promised $4,000 to deliver the drugs in Malaysia.
He said, “I was asked to take an empty bag to Malaysia and in return get $4,000 but when I got to the airport, the drug was discovered.”
Confirming the arrest, NDLEA Airport commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, said the drug was industrially packed in such a way that the agency had to cut the sides of the bag open with a knife to discover the drugs.
The commander said it would take a professional to detect the drugs.
In a related development, NDLEA officers at the Lagos airport discovered wraps of cocaine inside packs of baby powder meant for export to Gabon. The discovery was made inside a luggage containing artificial hair, perfumes and artificial nails.
The luggage was to be sent unaccompanied to Gabon via Askye Airline.
A suspect, Ebele Iwegbuna, has since been arrested in connection with the discovery.
Iwegbuna, a native of Orifite in Anambra state, in his statement, claimed that he was asked to send the goods to Gabon.
He said, “I was given N130,000 by my childhood friend to buy female hair attachments, artificial nails and perfumes.
“My friend later called to say that somebody would give me children’s powder to add to what I bought. So the person called me and gave me the powder which I added to the goods. It was in the process of search that the cocaine was discovered. I am a technician and I specialise in the repairs of air conditioning units.”
NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Ahmadu Giade, who described the involvement of the suspects in drug trafficking as sad, urged members of the public to draw lessons from the arrests.
Giade said, “I want members of the public to learn from the experiences of the suspects. It is unfortunate that at a time when the country is making efforts to save her citizens who are on death row abroad, Dike is deliberately signing his death warrant.”

Iran on Friday rejected it had committed any “illegal act” in Nigeria after the State Security Service (SSS) paraded three Nigerians accused of spying for the Islamic republic.
Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian was quoted in media reports as saying he “rejected Nigerian and Western media reports of illegal activities by the Islamic republic in Nigeria”.d
Amir-Abdollahian said relations between Iran and Nigeria were “developing” and urged officials of the two nations to prevent such accusations from being made.
On Wednesday, the Nigerian secret police paraded a 50-year-old Islamic cleric and two accomplices who they alleged were spying on prominent individuals and targets for Iran.
Abdullahi Mustapha Berende, presented as a leader of the Shiite sect in the central city of Ilorin, was arrested in December “for his active involvement in espionage and terrorist activities,” Nigerian security service spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar said.
Investigations revealed that Berende, accused of establishing a “terrorist cell” in Nigeria’s southwest, with a particular emphasis on Lagos, recruited the two other suspects for the task, Ogar said.
Berende underwent his training in Iran and his Iranian sponsors requested him “to identify and gather intelligence on public places and prominent hotels frequented by Americans and Israelis to facilitate attacks,” she said.
He allegedly gave to his Iranian handlers the names of former dictator Ibrahim Babangida, and ex-supreme leader of Muslims in Nigeria, Ibrahim Dasuki, as targets for attacks that could “unsettle the West,” she added.
Berende denied involvement in espionage or terror-related activities but admitted seeking information about some individuals and institutions.
The institutions included USAID and the Jewish Cultural Centre (Chabad) in Lagos, Ogar said, adding the suspects would soon be charged in court

Arsene Wenger insists he has no intention of quitting Arsenal despite growing criticism of the Gunners’ boss after the worst season of his 17-year reign in north London.
Wenger has been under fire from fans and pundits for much of the season, but the last week has been a new low for the Frenchman as his side crashed out of the FA Cup against Championship club Blackburn and then slumped to a 3-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich that left their Champions League hopes in tatters.
Barring a miracle comeback against Bayern in the second leg, Arsenal will have gone eight years without a trophy at the end of this season and many fans believe the time has come for Wenger to go.
But the 63-year-old, whose team have been reduced to a desperate scrap to finish in the Premier League’s top four, says he is not about to walk away from the current difficulties because his desire to do the job burns as bright as ever.
Asked at press conference on Friday if he had considered his position this week, Wenger said: “Never. Not one second. I don’t think that spark has anything to do with your age.
“It is just that’s how you are and you’re motivated by how much you want to win and how much you are a winner.
“If I go out now and play one against one with you, you will see I will beat you and at least if I don’t manage to beat you, I will want to beat you. That will not change as long as I can move.”
Wenger believes there needs to be a sense of perspective around what is regarded as achievement at the Emirates Stadium, with Arsenal having continued to qualify for the Champions League despite testing financial circumstances.
“We live in a world of emotion, of excess, and it is down to people who have responsibilities to put that into perspective and keep solid and keep guiding the club in the right way,” said Wenger, whose side face struggling Aston Villa on Saturday.
“My responsibility is to keep the guidelines and guide the team and the club in what I feel is the right way.
“What is important for me is to focus on the next game and try to give my best, like all the players.”
Arsenal’s regular board meeting on Thursday was attended by majority shareholder Stan Kroenke, who also watched Tuesday’s Bayern game.
Wenger, though, insisted it was very much a case of business as usual rather than an inquest into the team’s problems.
“The meeting speaks about many things. Commercial, ticket prices, long term plans. I make my report as well on the technical side, so it was the usual thing,” Wenger said.
“Of course we had no euphoria because we have gone through a disappointment on Tuesday night but apart from that we are responsible people who know what it is to fight.”
With so much criticism from outside the club threatening to destabilise his squad, Wenger called on the fans and players to show a unified front.
“What we need is to be united and strong, and not to be destabilised by people who have strong opinions after one game,” Wenger said.
“I believe what is important is that the club always goes with the guidelines we have and do not change direction every time we lose a big game, that would lead to a disaster.
“A bad period for a club is also a good opportunity to show how united and strong you are. We have a good history of that at Arsenal.”

Coach Stephen Keshi has said that his all-conquering Super Eagles side were going to be the target of all African teams when the second round of qualifying race for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil resumes next month.
The Super Eagles returned to the summit of African football a fortnight ago, when the team defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final of the 29th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, at a packed National Stadium in Johannesburg.
It was the team’s third taste of soccer glory after previous wins in 1994 and 1980. More remarkably was that the victory in South Africa came as a huge surprise given that the team was not amongst the top five favourites to win the trophy.
They also did it without the over-hyped foreign based stars, most of whom, were left out of the 23-man team by Keshi.
Going into the tournament, the Nigerians were considered as outsiders but with their conquest of Africa, Keshi feels that the continent’s attention would be firmly fixed on them.
Nigeria are drawn in Group F, comprising Namibia, Malawi and Kenya, who they open their campaign against on March 22 at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
None of Nigeria’s opponents were at the last Nations Cup, leaving the Eagles to fancy their chances of progressing from the pool but speaking during the week, Coach Keshi said that he was not taking anything for granted when the race to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil begins in earnest.
“The eyes of the continent would be fixed on us when the race to qualify for the 2014 World Cup starts next month..We are the African champions, so I expect that other teams would be bidding to get the better of us when they meet us. It is going to be tough race and I am wary of our opponents.
“I believe that there are no longer minnows in football, so I expect stiff competition from our opponents. They deserve to be where they are now and the fact that we are the champions of Africa has made us the team that others want to beat. They know that if they defeat us that the world would notice them the more.
“We are mindful of these things and are going to approach all the games with the highest sense of professionalism. It is not going to be easy but we are equal to the challenge and hope that at the end of the race that we would be the ones smiling”, added Keshi, who is the only Nigerian coach to win the African Cup of Nations as a player and coach. He is also the second African to win the competition as a player and coach.
Mohammed El-Gohary, an Egyptian, is the other African, who won the competition, as a coach and player, with the same national team.

Former Nigerian manager, Christian Chukwu has suggested top grade friendlies for the Super Eagles ahead of 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier against the Harambee Stars of Kenya.
The Super Eagles will host the East Africans in a 2014 World Cup qualifying game at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar on March 23.
Chukwu said after the Eagles emerged champions at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa the side have become the team to beat and cannot afford to enter into any contest ill-prepared.
“It’s now Super Eagles must be adequately prepared for competitions. We’re African champions, others will want to make history by doing everything to beat us.
“I think we should halt celebration over the Afcon victory and return to work immediately. We don’t have to relax. I’ll suggest we play one or two top friendlies before the encounter against Kenya on March 23,” said the former Harambee Stars coach.
The former Nigerian defender told supersport.com that if the Super Eagles do their home work very well the Harambee Stars will not pose a hard nut to crack.
“We’re not playing the Kenyans for the first time, we’ve played them severally. Kenya like any other East African side are full of energy capable of playing 120 minutes because of their altitude.
“We must not underrate them. I’m aware they just recruited a new manager. I don’t expect him to perform magic between now and the time we play them,” he said.

Aggrieved youths in Emure Ekiti, yesterday, chased the traditional ruler of the town, Oba Emmanuel Adebowale Adebayo, out of his palace over alleged strange and unprecedented deaths in the community in recent time
Codewit gathered that the youths who stormed the palace of the first class traditional ruler, yesterday morning, had sought audience with the monarch to proffer solution over the strange deaths of about 12 youths in the last two weeks.
It was further gathered that after the youths had waited for sometime and when it was apparent that no positive response was coming from the one-time police commissioner, they were said to have lost their temper.
The aggrieved youths were said to have pelted the monarch with satchet waters, and made bonfire along the roads linking the palace.
The few chiefs who were in attendance during the encounter were said to have removed their beads and run out of the palace.
The restless youths later marched through the major streets in the town and terminated at the main market, a development that disrupted the socio-economic life of the community throughout the period of the protest.
Commenting on the development, chairman of Emure Local Government Area, Mr Adewale Febisola, who confirmed the incident, appealed to the aggrieved youths to give peace a chance.

A 60-year-old self-acclaimed Pastor, Simon Dike, and three other persons were, yesterday, arraigned before an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos, for allegedly selling a month and 18-day-old baby boy for N60,000.
The accused persons are Joy Uzochukwa, 27, the mother of the baby; Margaret Obinwa, 49, an auxiliary nurse and Chibuzor Ogbonna, 50, who was said to be the father of the baby.
The father of the baby is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy in human trafficking and selling of a new born baby, Obinwa; the auxiliary nurse is facing a one-count charge of purchasing the baby while Dike is also facing a two-count charge of human trafficking and failure to use all reasonable means to prevent the commission of the offence by the mother of the baby and the auxiliary nurse.
The accused persons, who were brought to the court by detectives from State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti in Yaba, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to the prosecutor, ASP Henry Obiazi, “all the accused persons are residents of Odongunyan, Ikorodu and the crime was committed on January 4, a day after the baby was born, at De-Ifes Medical Centre, Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos.”
Obiazi informed the court that Uzochukwa went to meet Obinwa to help her abort the pregnancy as an auxiliary nurse but she encouraged her not to abort but sell the baby, adding that Obinwa then introduced Uzochukwa to Dike, who wanted to buy the baby. Dike has been married for 28 years without a child.
The prosecutor said that Uzochukwa signed an undertaking not to demand for the baby after collecting the money, which she accepted the offer.
“Uzochukwa left Ogbonna who impregnated her because he didn’t take care of her and married another man, called Kingsley, who later hatched the plan to sell the baby boy to the men of Oodua Peoples’ Congress, OPC, that later reported the case to the police,” the prosecutor added.
However, the Chief magistrate, Miss S.O Solebo, who presided over the case granted Uzochukwa and Dike bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with a responsible surety in like sum, while Obinwa and Ogbonna were granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two sureties in like sum.
Solebo ordered that the baby should be taken to Lagos State Motherless Babies home on Victoria Island, Lagos and that Uzochukwa should be permitted to see the baby under the supervision of the matron of the Home.
The case has been adjourned, March 13 for further hearing.
