Big Brother Evictee Nic Denies Auditioning for New Soap

Read Time:1 Minute, 18 Second

Big Brother Amplified contestant Nic Wangondu has denied that he auditioned for the upcoming East African soap opera by Alison Production.

According to our source, Nic allegedly auditioned for the soap this week alongside First Grader star Oliver Litondo. Nic has, however, denied this news, saying that he has not been involved with any production house since he came back from the Big Brother House in South Africa. “I am not aware of this since no one has called me to audition for anything. I am still settling in,” Nic said.

The soap which is the brain child of Alison Ngibuini, the founder of Alison Production house, will air twice a week. Alison is currently in South Africa researching more on soaps.

Meanwhile, Nic said being in part of the reality show has changed his lifestyle as he is now famous. “Being a public figure comes with great expectations but I don’t feel that I’m obliged to change to the extremes,” he said. According to the professional filmmaker at Film Studios, Nigerian contestant Karen might emerge the winner of the reality show. “Karen knows how to play her game right. At first I thought she would be among the first people to leave the house but seeing her survival so far I think chances are that she might emerge the winner,” he said. Asked about his opinion on fellow Kenyan housemate, Millicent, he dismissed her as too open. “Millicent trusts everyone in the house and keeps opening up to them forgetting that they will use that to rig her out.”

Big Brother Amplified: Alex Throws Miss P Out!

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 39 Second

Miss P and Alex had a major blowout Monday night, allegedly over Alex’s boiled eggs, which popped after she failed to time them correctly..

Alex immediately threw away the eggs and ran upstairs to get Miss P’s bed, which he left downstairs, together with the legendary black pants that he always wears. Apparently the black pants are Miss P’s and it was perhaps the only hold she still had on him after he had started showing interest in Weza.

Upon seeing Alex dump her pants too, Miss P was quick to conclude that he must be ready to jump into Weza’s pants. However, Weza took offence and asked that she be left out of their ‘marital problems’.

She didn’t mince her words as she told Miss P that Alex’s issues were bigger than just eggs but he had deeper issues that had surfaced through the egg issue.

Miss P apologised to Weza but it seemed as though the Angolan Housemate didn’t take it kindly.

Miss P later approached Alex and demanded an explanation, insisting that she had an equal right to sleep wherever she likes and Alex wouldn’t dictate to her.

Alex decided to leave the bedroom and went to sit in the garden alone. Millicent followed him outside and tried to knock some sense into him. She told him that he shouldn’t allow Miss P to get to him at this crucial stage of the game but the Ghanaian Housemate couldn’t even respond as he just kept breathing heavily.

However, with Alex and Miss P one can’t even tell when they are serious or not, because they have been talking strategy for the past week. However, just as it seems as if Miss P is left alone on ‘their’ strategy, Alex corners her and they start whispering about how well their plan is going.

Does Africa think this drama is still part of their strategy or has Alex backed off the plans as she had quizzed him about earlier?

Big Brother Amplified: All’s Fair In Love And War On Big Brother Amplified

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 17 Second

The Housemates on M-Net’s Big Brother Amplified got two massive surprises this week – the Houses merged on Monday, and then nobody was evicted last night (3 July) during the live eviction show! Rest assured though – Big Brother has a ton of tricks up his sleeve and is sure to shock any Housemates who have let their guard down, with just 4 weeks of the show to go!

IK kicked off the show with a review of the merge and how the Heads Housemates had struggled to come to terms with the confrontational atmosphere in the Tails House. After Zambian lyrical masters Zone Fam rocked the Amplified stage with “Shaka Zulu On ‘Em” (revealing that their favourite Housemate is Sharon O), IK gave viewers some insight into the burgeoning romance in the merged House this week. The merge and the subsequent ‘power cut’ set pulses racing as the Housemates re-jigged strategy and followed their hearts, with some serious effects on the game

Lomwe seems to have forgotten about Vina’s overtures and turned his attention to Kim, who seems to be struggling with her feelings for the Malawian. She’s suspicious of his sudden interest – but clearly the feeling is mutual! The relationship between Miss P, Alex and Weza is more complicated than a mystery novel – Weza initially declared her love for Alex, but now that Alex is reciprocating, she seems unsure of how to proceed. She told him to his face that she isn’t sure that his feelings are sincere, but he’s sworn that he likes her. He says he likes Miss P in “a motherly kind of way” but is physically attracted to Weza. Weza broke down on Sunday afternoon after Alex confessed his love for her and Luclay behaved less than kindly towards her.

Zeus seems intent on dodging Karen’s enthusiastic advances. She’s demanding kisses, but he’s maintaining that he has a girlfriend! Despite his protests, he gladly accepted a massage from the Nigerian and his resolve seems to be waning – could he be falling for her too?

IK then gave viewers the chance to catch up with last week’s evicted Housemate, Felicia. “The Big Brother experience for me was fun, crazy in a way, but I had a good experience,” she said. “I loved the tasks, I loved the parties, I loved the people, it was fun.”

“When Vina swapped me, it was obvious – I saw it coming, but I didn’t think that that would be my exit. But I understand her because she didn’t have much of a choice – I was the only one who wasn’t nominated and she had been nominated three times in a row before that, so she needed a break,” she said of her surprise exit at the hands of the distraught Nigerian. She said that being part of Big Brother Amplified had taught her to go after the things she wanted and given her a fascinating insight into the lives and cultures of her fellow Africans. She revealed that she had felt closest to Millicent during her time in the House, while her least favourite Housemate was Hanni.

Back on stage, Zone Fam rocked the stage again with “Mbama” before Soul Candi diva Lolo wrapped up the show with a medley of some of her red-hot hits

With emotions and hormones seeming to rule the House this past week, it’ll be interesting to see how the nominations go on Monday – and how Head of House Karen, now in charge of a ‘merged’ if not ‘united’ House will use her power to influence things. Stay tuned to Big Brother Amplified 24/7 on DStv Channel 198 to see the intrigue unfold.

Two Big Brother Amplified Housemates will walk away with massive prizes of USD200 000 each on 31 July – there’s still a lot of action to come on Big Brother Amplified! Big Brother Amplified is headline sponsored by Coca-Cola. Fans can catch all the latest news, video – and all-important voting information – at www.mnetafrica.com/bigbrother. Big Brother Amplified: Big Brother Amplified: Alex Up For Eviction… As Karen Sacrifices Herself

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 20 Second

Monday night’s Big Brother Amplified nominations show saw Nigeria’s Karen desperately trying to make history as she boldly nominated herself for elimination and refused to save herself as Head of House. Meanwhile, Ghana’s Alex broke his record as the only housemate who has never faced the real threat of eviction since the competition started.

Big Brother announced the nominated housemates for eviction as Alex, Karen, Miss P, Sharon O, and Weza. When Karen was asked whom she would save and replace, she hesitated for a long time, decided to save herself and replace herself with Vimbai. But at the stroke of confirming her choice with Big Brother, she changed her mind saying she wouldn’t be saving and replacing anyone.

During the nominations earlier in the day, Karen said she thinks everyone deserves to take the money home and it was not up to her to make an assertion as to who should not be the last Housemate standing. When Miss P was Head of House, she saved Karen and put Mumba up for possible Eviction. Karen was delighted at the gesture, even though relations between the two of them were strained and continued to remain so until very recently when the girls entered into a pact that required them to nominate the guys out and ensure a female winner.

Of the six Housemates that Nominated Miss P, Luclay was the only guy and he said it was nothing personal, but he was just playing the game and felt Miss P would better cope outside the House. He waxed lyrical about her great personality, but said he fails to justify keeping her in the game any longer than she has been in the House already.

Miss P became target for the girls as they were all in agreement that she was foolish in exposing her game-plan with Alex and telling them that her fooling around with him was just for show. Sharon O said she never clicked with Miss P from the day they entered the House, so her decision was easier. As for Weza, who has made several attacks on Miss P in the last 48 hours, trust was key and she felt Miss P broke that by trying to play them with Alex.

Mumba had a lot to say about Miss P; none of which was positive. She labeled her as selfish, childish and not being herself. Weza went on to nominate Millicent; something we all expected but Millicent surprised us when she did not return the favour and opted to nominate Kim and Alex instead. Weza and Millicent have been at odds since the week Weza left the Heads House for Tails. Millicent confronted Weza for spreading rumours about Felicia being a witch.

Alex is the only guy that nominated another guy; he went for Zeus and Karen, explaining that Zeus was convinced there exists an alliance among the boys and Zeus is the ring leader.

As usual, peacefmonline.com is appealing to all Ghanaians and fans of Alex to vote to save him from eviction. Send or text: VOTE ALEX to the shortcode I477 on the following networks Expresso, TIGO, MTN, VODAFONE and AIRTEL

Former Finnish skier and coach convicted in doping case

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 38 Second

Helsinki, Finland — A former top Finnish skier and an ex-ski coach were given suspended sentences on Thursday for lying during an investigation into doping in Finnish cross-country skiing in the 1990s.

The Helsinki District Court imposed a 12-month suspended sentence on skier Jari Rasanen for failing to tell the truth about the use of doping and handed coach Pekka Vahasoyrinki a nine-month term for lying about providing banned substances to skiers. It was not clear whether Rasanen and Vahasoyrinki would appeal. Two other accused ski officials were acquitted of the same offense.

The investigation began in 1998, when Finnish news agency STT ran a story accusing Finnish skiers of widespread doping. 19 leading ski officials sued the news agency for libel. STT edtor Kari Vaisanen and reporter Johanna Aatsalo were found guilty in 2000. A year later, six cross-country skiers tested positive for banned substances at the world championships. The skiers, one of which was a six-time Olympic competitor with 11 medals, tested positive for a banned plasma expander. The Finnish team forfeited four medals, including the men’s team gold in the 4×10-kilometer relay and the women’s silver in the 4×5-kilometer relay.

The doping investigation reopened in April 2008 after Finland’s Channel Four TV reported that the Finnish Ski Association had covered up the “organized and systematic use of banned substances” by skiers in the 1990s. Two months later, former ski coach Kari-Pekka Kyro, who has acknowledged helping skiers dope and was found guilty in 2004 of smuggling banned substances and attempted fraud, made allegations that there had been systematic doping among Finnish cross-country skiers and that ski officials and trainers knew about it.

Aatsalo, the former STT reporter who was found guilty of libel in 2000 said Thursday’s verdict was a relief.

“This case has been going on since 1998,” she said. “Today’s a good day for me.”

Russia clash with NATO Over Libya Campaign

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 56 Second

Russia and NATO have failed to narrow their differences over the Western air campaign in Libya, after Moscow accused the alliance of interpreting a United Nations resolution on military intervention any way it wished.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen defended the alliance’s Libya mission Monday during a visit to the Russian city of Sochi, where he discussed Libya with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and visiting South African President Jacob Zuma. Mr. Zuma has led the African Union’s efforts to help negotiate a peaceful settlement in Libya.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said there is “no common understanding” about how the resolution is being implemented. He said Moscow wants the U.N. mandate to be fulfilled as worded, without expanding its interpretation.

As NATO has increased airstrikes to support rebel forces, Russia has said the alliance is overstepping its bounds. Moscow was particularly angered by revelations last week about a direct French arms drop to rebels fighting Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s forces. Russia did not vote on the U.N. Security Council resolution in March that gave NATO the authority to protect civilians in Libya with military means.

In related news, officials from Mr. Gadhafi’s government Monday said progress has been made in talks with opposition leaders to end the four-month conflict.

The Associated Press quotes Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Kaim as saying talks have been on-going for two months. He said the negotiations have included some members of the Transitional National Council that has represented rebels in international diplomacy.

Also Monday, one of Mr. Gadhafi’s sons warned that the family will not quit or leave Libya. Saif al-Islam Gadhafi told the French TV channel TF1 that “We will never surrender.”

TNC head Mustafa Abdel Jalil on Monday distanced himself from earlier comments attributed to him that Libya’s rebel leadership may consider allowing Mr. Gadhafi to remain in the country as part of a transition deal, provided he resigns and orders a cease-fire.

Jalil took the reins of the rebel movement after resigning from Libya’s government in February over what he saw as excessive use of force against demonstrators calling for the leader’s resignation.

Libyan government spokesman Musa Ibrahim has previously said the prospect of a peace deal would be welcomed, but not one that rests on Mr. Gadhafi’s departure

Seven ships in three hours – an evening at Helsinki West Harbour

0 0
Read Time:53 Second

Helsinki, the capital of Finland is a busy cruise port during the summer months (largely thanks to the vicinity of St. Petersburg). In addition to this the city is also a busy ferry port, with at least eight ferries visiting the city’s three harbours on any given day around the year.

June 22 was the busiest day of the year in the Port of Helsinki at least as far as cruise ships were concerned, with a total of six cruise ships visiting. In the South Harbour were the KRISTINA KATARINA, SEVEN SEAS VOYAGER and SEABOURN SOJOURN, while the West Harbour hosted the MARINA, ROTTERDAM and COSTA LUMINOSA. To document the event at least in part I decided to head to the West Harbour, where in addition to the three cruise ships four ferries would call during the evening: Tallink’s BALTIC PRINCESS, SUPERSTAR and STAR, as well as Eckerö Line’s NORDLANDIA. In a space of three hours, I managed to photograph all seven ships either departing or arriving Read more

New York: Once again, it’s the alleged victim on trial in rape case

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 34 Second

Sandy Banks: Revelations that Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s accuser lied about a gang-rape on her asylum papers could kill the case against him. But her past doesn’t prove his innocence.

It’s hard to know what to think about the drama unfolding in New York City, where the lead actors — an immigrant hotel maid and a powerful French politician — seem to have suddenly changed places.

When the show opened six weeks ago, the maid was a humble single mother, tragically wronged. Raised in a mud hut in a West African village, she had sought sanctuary in America after she was gang-raped and her husband killed, she said.

And Dominique Strauss-Kahn — a potential French presidential candidate — was a wealthy bully with a history of sexual faux pas, accused of attacking her while she cleaned his suite in a luxury hotel. In May, he was charged with attempted rape and sexual assault, and held on $6-million bond.

Then suddenly, on Friday, Strauss-Khan was set free. His accuser, it appears, is a liar and cheat.

She lied on her taxes and asylum application — claiming a child she didn’t have and a gang rape in Guinea that never happened. Her bank records and a taped phone conversation with her jailed fiance suggest she consorts with criminals linked to drug-dealing operations.

Does that prove that she wasn’t attacked and forced into sex by Strauss-Khan? No. But it does mean that his high-priced lawyers would tear her apart on the witness stand.

The prosecutors have DNA that shows that a sexual encounter occurred. Strauss-Khan says it was consensual. She was apparently overcome with desire at the sight of his paunchy, naked body. Am I the only one who finds that hard to believe?

But Strauss-Khan doesn’t have to prove that he didn’t try to rape her. Prosecutors have to prove that he did.

That means the “victim” is on trial in The People vs. Dominique Strauss-Khan. And her honor is our evidence.

::

Maybe not much has changed after all, despite 30 years of evolving sex crime laws. Lawyers can no longer badger a woman on the stand with questions about what kind of panties she wore or how many times she’d had sex before — questions that were routine in rape trials I covered years ago.

But the personal life of a rape victim is still considered fair game in too many cases, particularly when the issue is whether the sex act was by consent or involved force or threats of violence.

I understand the reluctance of prosecutors in the Strauss-Kahn case to go forward. Their office was stung in May by the unexpected acquittal in a high-profile case of two New York City cops accused of raping a drunken women after helping her into her apartment.

Jurors told the New York Times they didn’t buy the cops’ story that they had done nothing more than “snuggle” with the inebriated woman. But they didn’t feel they could convict on the word of a woman with no DNA evidence and gaps in her liquor-clouded memories.

The Strauss-Kahn case presents a similar dilemma. How does a jury judge the veracity of a woman who would have to admit to years of lies and then attempt to explain away changes in her retelling of the alleged attack?

But then, Strauss-Kahn isn’t squeaky clean, either. A novelist who says Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her 10 years ago announced this week that she intends to press for charges in her case. She was dissuaded from going public back then by his political allies — including her mother.

Strauss-Khan has a reputation in France as a womanizer. In America, we’d more likely consider his crude come-ons as the mark of a sexual harasser. But as one of his lawyers told our reporter, “He’s a seducer, not an attacker.”

Then give him a chance at seducing a jury. And let his discredited accuser — once deemed so convincing by prosecutors that she left hardened investigators in tears — have a chance to tell her story.

Finnish study says insomnia may be hereditary

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 27 Second

HELSINKI, July 4 (Xinhua) — A new Finnish research shows that sleeplessness may be hereditary, and insomniacs are more likely to die earlier than people with healthy sleep patterns.

The research is the first to link insomnia with mortality risk, Finnish media reported on Monday.

The research is conducted by the Institute of Occupational Health in collaboration with the University of Helsinki and the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare

In a large-scale twin study, the Finnish researchers followed the health status of 12,500 adult twin pairs during the years from 1990 to 2009. Twenty percent of the participants were suffering from sleeplessness symptoms, including difficulty in initiating sleep, nocturnal awakening and non-restorative sleep.

The study found out that compared with unidentical twins, identical twins were more likely to suffer from similar insomnia symptoms. This finding indicates that genetic factors play a role in the formation of insomnia.

Moreover, the participants were divided into three groups, according to their sleep qualities. Out of the participants, 48 percent were good sleepers, 40 percent average sleepers and 12 percent poor sleepers. The search result shows that insomnia-related symptoms may increase mortality risk.

In addition, compared with good sleepers, 7 percent of the women and 22 percent of the men who were average sleepers were more likely to die earlier; and poor sleepers were 1.5 times more likely to die earlier.

According to the researchers, sleeplessness is a common health problem among working-age cohort. Chronic sleeplessness raises the risk of many illnesses and accidents, and thus weakens people’s quality of life and ability to operate properly.

The experts suggest that insomniacs should seek medical treatment in time, and chronic insomnia patients should be better treated with non-drug therapy

Read Time:51 Second

HACKERS sparked outrage yesterday after taking over Fox News’s Twitter page and declaring that Barack Obama had been assassinated.

The US broadcaster’s official Twitter page reported the president had been shot twice in a restaurant while campaigning in Iowa.

Its politics Twitter page @FoxNewsPolitics, which has 35,000 followers, said: “BREAKING NEWS: President Barack Obama assassinated, two gunshot wounds proved too much. It’s a sad 4th for America.”

A string of posts from the same account were not deleted for up to six hours.

Hacking group the Script Kiddies appeared to claim responsibility for the attack.

A spokesman hinted at future attacks, adding Fox “was selected because we figured their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting”.

Fox News said: “The hacking is being investigated and FoxNews.com regrets any distress the false tweets may have created.”
