Nigeria: Atiku Abubakar won’t challenge Jonathan in court

ABUJA (Reuters) – The defeated candidate in Nigeria’s ruling party presidential primaries, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, will not go to court to challenge the outcome of the polls, his campaign spokesman said on Wednesday.

Abubakar was defeated heavily by President Goodluck Jonathan at last Thursday’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primaries and his polling agents said they had refused to sign off on the result, raising fears of a legal battle or split in the party.

Prominent northern politicians within the party who are opposed to Jonathan, including ex-military ruler Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) and former national security adviser Aliyu Gusau, met Abubakar on Sunday to discuss their next move.

“Atiku met with IBB and Gusau and they decided not to challenge Jonathan’s emergence as the presidential candidate in court,” Abubakar’s campaign spokesman Garba Shehu said.

Jonathan’s candidacy in the April 9 presidential election is controversial because of a “zoning agreement” in the PDP under which power is supposed to rotate between the mostly Muslim north and largely Christian south every two terms.

Jonathan, the first head of state from the oil-producing Niger Delta in the south, inherited the presidency last year when his predecessor Umaru Yar’Adua, a northerner, died.

Some PDP stalwarts — including Babangida and Gusau — say a northerner must complete what would have been Yar’Adua’s second term and backed Abubakar as a “consensus candidate” against Jonathan at the primaries.

Abubakar has stopped short of congratulating Jonathan.

“The issues of power sharing and zoning remain important to them (Abubakar, Babangida and Gusau) and they will stay in the party and continue to fight for those issues,” Shehu said.

Jonathan clinched victory in the primaries by a wider margin than expected but faced some resistance in the north. Babangida and Gusau’s home states voted against him.

Jonathan is the now favourite to win the presidential election as the PDP has won every such poll in Africa’s most populous nation since military rule ended in 1999.

Lagos PDP Gov. Ticket: Dr. Dosunmu in political battle with members

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 41 Second

A suit seeking the nullification of the nomination of Dr. Samsondeen Ade Dosunmu, as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for Lagos State, has been filed before a Federal High Court in Lagos, South West Nigeria, by a PDP member, Oluowo Adeyeri.

Other defendants in the suit are: the PDP Chairman, PDP Governorship Screening Committee, Lagos State, Chairman PDP Governorship Election Panel, Lagos State and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

In an affidavit sworn to and filed before the court by a Lagos lawyer, Tunde Akinrimisi, the applicant, an indigene of Ikorodu, a card carrying member of the PDP and an elected delegate of Ward A2 under the Ikorodu Local Government PDP, contended that Dr. Sodunmu is not eligible to be the candidate of the PDP in the next election; based on the following reasons:

That he has not been a card carrying member of the PDP for a period of two years and there was no waiver to that effect.

Consequently, he said he was not eligible to contest the 10 January primary for the governorship ticket.

He also contended further that as at 10 January, 2009, by which time he ought to have been a card carrying member of the party, Dosunmu was a public servant and consequently, was not allowed to be a member of any political in Nigeria.

Prince Adeyemi further averred that Dosunmu was removed from office forcefully or abruptly as his exit as Director-General of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, was not voluntarily, but as a result of alleged financial impropriety.

Consequently, he is caught by the provision of Article 14b of the Electoral guidelines for primary election 2010 of the PDP.

In view of this, being a card carrying member of the PDP, and also being an elected delegate of the party who participated in the 10 January, 2011 governorship election; on behalf of himself and the people he represents, he has interest in who becomes the party’s flag bearer since an ineligible candidate will eventually jeopardise the chances of the party in winning the governorship election in Lagos State.

Therefore, he prayed the court for the following reliefs:

A declaration that the PDP governorship screening panel wrongly cleared Dr. Samsondeen Ade Dosumu to contest the PDP nomination process on 10 January, 2011 in flagrant breach of the PDP electoral guidelines.

A declaration that his nomination as the PDP governorship candidate for Lagos State through the said congress is null and void on account of his ineligibility.

An order of the court disqualifying him as the PDP governorship flag bearer in the 2011 election.

An order of injunction restraining the PDP from presenting or submitting his name to INEC as the party’s flag bearer for Lagos State.

In an accompanying statement on oath, deposed to by the applicant and same filed before the court by Barrister Akinrinmisi, Prince Adeyeri urged the court to declare the next candidate with the highest number of votes at the PDP governorship primary of the 10 January, 2011 as the lawful winner and consequently, the party’s flag bearer.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Stella:…if you are in a steady relationship how has your patner reacted to this movie?

The West Hypocrisy Part 1

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 42 Second

I am an African student who has studying and living in the Finland for the past 6 years. I successfully completed my studies and I have been looking for a job in the Finland since then. In the meanwhile I get by doing menial work which I know I am way too qualified for. In fact at my current place of work all my superiors’ qualifications don’t even come close to my qualifications. I have not been able to secure a professional job for excuses that range from plain old Finnish language skills to the outright racism. I am resigned to the fact that recruiters stop reading my CV after reading my name. My name is not Finnish enough. I agree language skills maybe a problem but I only apply for jobs that require English speakers, and English is the language of communication within the organization. Come to think of it language skills is not really the problem because I know foreigners in this country who speak fluent Finnish but do not get employed because they do not have blonde hair and blue eyes. The foreigner job seeker’s curse in Finland.

I traveled back to my native country this festive season and I was shocked to see the number of white people in my country, Finns included. Prior to traveling home I had almost bought into the notion that we African have really invaded Finland and Europe as a whole. The stories of the ship loads of Africans trying to reach Europe made me believe that we were really invading Europe. On traveling back home all my fears were allied because if it is anything, the contrary is happening. I drove along the most prestigious neighborhood in my country and to my surprise the majority of the people there were whites. This is not because we Africans don’t like living in such neighborhoods, but this is because all the multinationals that set up shop in Africa insist on the top management tier being entirely white. The irony here is this, I cannot get a job in Finland because I am a foreigner with insufficient Finnish language skills to communicate in Finland. A Finnish company sets up shop in Kenya and the entire top management is Finnish with zero local language skills and terrible English at best. Imagine an African company setting up shop in Finland and insisting that the entire top management be sourced from Africa. I would like to see the drama that ensures during the application of work permits for the African expatriate. I am sure the far right political parties will have gotten an outright win in the next elections if such a scenario was to ever happen.

I ask aren’t there any qualified Africans who can do this ‘expatriates’ jobs. I have studied in Finland with my Finnish classmates and when an exam was difficult we all failed and vice versa. So I am just as qualified as them, at least that’s what my degree certificate states, so at what point does my Finnish colleague become more qualified than me to run an organization in my home country. All this is happening at a time in which right wing political parties are gaining popularity in Finland and in Europe as a whole. Their core agenda is to get rid of foreigners who reside within their respective countries. Immigration as gotten out of control is their banner. This immigrants do menial jobs which the whites themselves do not want to do anyway. At the same time a good number of white population is in Africa occupying the best jobs for which there are many qualified Africans willing and ready to do the job. Tit for tat is a fair game, I think it is time we in Africa nurture far right political parties with anti western sentiments, to level the playing grounds which are currently skewed against us. We need more Julius Malemas and Robert Mugabes.
