South Africa/Ghana: Why Bafana Lost in Group C

Andre Ayew of Ghana reacts after scoring the winning goal, taking the Black Stars through to the quarter-finals at the Africa Cup of Nations.

If you had to pick two sides to emerge from Group C at the African Nations Cup prior to the tournament the smart money would have been on Algeria and Ghana.

In a pool that was expected to be evenly contested, the pair's recent experiences at the World Cup in Brazil, and their greater quality through the squad made them favourites.

And with two wins each in the pool phase, there is little doubt they deserved to go through.

South Africa were at times excellent, but hampered by naivety in defence and a coach in Shakes Mashaba who seemed unsure of his best XI and too fond of tinkering.

To use three goalkeepers in as many matches at the tournament is almost laughable, allowing none to settle in.

Mashaba will claim he was "giving everybody a chance" as he is fond of doing, but this is not a junior tournament or run of friendlies where such selections can be appropriate – this is Africa's biggest stage.

South Africa took the lead in all three of their games, but faded badly in the final 20 minutes as the pressure took its toll.

They were tactically out-thought and punished – although there are still matches to come tonight in Group D, it is unlikely any side in the competition will concede more than the six goals they shipped in three games.

"We need to go back to our basics of playing football, when to do things, how to do them, and where to do them," Mashaba said. "We need that ability to kill off a game, that is one of the things I am talking about when we say the basics.

"We needed to take our time, but we were knocking it back to them and that's where the problem was coming from."

Senegal too showed potential, but were ultimately undone by the clever Algerians in their final match.

The north Africans showed why they should be favourites to lift this title with a superbly organised display and excellent finishing ability.

Algeria coach Christian Gourcuff felt his side were fortunate in the Senegal game, but they were comfortable in the end and his words are likely more in the hope his players can lift their game further.

"We are not the champions and if we want to become champion, then we must improve," he said.

Senegal coach Alain Giresse suggested there would be a major shake-up of the side that would likely not involve him in the future.

"I am out of contract. My contract has finished. The road ends here for Senegal," he said. "There will be a lot of changes in and around the team. What happens next I don't know, but I know what I am going to do."

Ghana coach Avram Grant, on his first assignment with the team, will have felt a mixture of relief and joy as his side came from third to top the pool in the final round of games.

"We have finished first in the group of death, which is not bad," he told reporters. "After losing the first match we showed great attitude in the second and continued along the same lines."

Ebola: Police, fans clash at Afcon

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 22 Second

The Ebola risk at the Africa Cup of Nations is “under control”, says Equatorial Guinea Football Federation president Andres Jorge Mbombio.
Police and fans clashed during Zambia’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo after Ebola screening delayed entry to the ground in Ebebiyin.

There were also clashes during Ivory Coast’s draw with Guinea and Mali’s tie against Cameroon on Tuesday in Malabo.
Despite the wait to enter stadiums, Mbombio claims the threat is contained.

“When we decided to host the tournament, we increased the preventive measures, so that now we can say everything is under control,” he said.

“We feel proud and reassured, and only want to think of football.”

A World Health Organisation (WHO) worker who was conducting Ebola screening at Tuesday’s Group D games told the BBC that there were isolated incidents of fighting between police and fans, with one involving up to 300 people.

The WHO worker says she feared for her safety and had to come inside the gates to carry out the checks for Ebola. The police used electroshock weapons, batons and cattle prods to stop the fighting, after fans surged towards the gates, reports the BBC’s Alex South in Malabo.

Equatorial Guinea are hosting the tournament after Morocco’s request to postpone the event because of the possible spread of the disease was rejected by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) in November.

Supporters have their temperatures checked and are then asked to clean their hands with sanitising gel as they enter stadiums, which is resulting in long queues.

Nigeria paving way for polio-free Africa

Read Time:55 Second

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has acknowledged Nigeria’s efforts towards achieving a polio-free Africa.

According to John Vertefeuille, team lead for Nigeria at the Centers for Disease Control, Nigeria was able to control Ebola because it deployed polio eradication response infrastructure.

“The recent Ebola outbreak in Nigeria was successfully interrupted in part because the polio eradication response infrastructure was used; in particular, members of the Nigeria Polio Emergency Operations Center were deployed to coordinate the multi-agency Ebola response,” Vertefeuille said.

For Nigeria to totally eradicate polio, he recommended continued national program innovations and strategies to improve polio vaccine coverage for underserved and hard-to-reach communities.

He said: “Final steps toward polio eradication in Nigeria will require continued national program innovations and strategies to improve polio vaccine coverage for underserved and hard-to-reach communities.”According to Forbes, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has not reported cases of polio in Nigeria since July 24, 2014 and the last in Africa reported in August, thus Vertefeuille’s enthusiasm is well-founded.

Signing Messi ‘impossible’ for Chelsea -Steve Holland

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

The Argentine superstar is reportedly unhappy at Barcelona, but Blues assistant coach Steve Holland is adamant that Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations prevent any deal.

Chelsea assistant coach Steven Holland believes it is “impossible” for the club to sign Barcelona star Lionel Messi due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Messi’s future has been the subject of intense speculation ever since he hinted back in November that he could leave Camp Nou, amid reported tensions with boss Luis Enrique and the Barcelona hierarchy.

The Argentina superstar appeared to fan the flames this week by following Chelsea on Instagram, but Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has since reiterated the club’s desire to keep their all-time record goalscorer.

Last month Jose Mourinho played down any talk of a potential transfer, insisting that Chelsea are incapable of meeting the €250 million release clause in the 27-year-old’s contract as a result of Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations.

And filling in for the Portuguese in Friday’s press conference ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, assistant Steve Holland gave the speculation similarly short shrift.

“Signing Messi [for Chelsea] under FFP is impossible,” Holland told reporters.

“Sometimes a club has to be reactive, but the hope is that nobody leaves or arrives. We’re happy with what we have.”
