FG Aids, Profits from Boko Haram, Says APC

0 0
Read Time:7 Minute, 44 Second

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of aiding, abetting and benefitting from the continued Boko Haram insurgency in the country.

The party said through the mismanagement of national resources, massive corruption and the incompetent handling of what started as a localised insurgency, the PDP-led federal government  had been responsible for the festering of the crisis.

In a statement issued yesterday by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also accused the federal government of using the fight against the insurgency as an excuse to persecute the opposition, trample on civil liberties and abuse national institutions on a scale that is unprecedented in the history of the country.

‘’Far from the baseless and irresponsible accusations and finger-pointing by the PDP and the government it controls at the centre, it is time to tell Nigerians that the only reason the insurgency has continued unabated is because the PDP and the Jonathan administration are benefitting massively from it.”

The party accused the PDP of profiting from the Boko Haram insurgency, adding that this was why it was always dismissive of any genuine efforts to end the crisis, preferring to continually demonise the APC as the sponsors of Boko Haram even when there was no scintilla of evidence to back the allegation up.

It said the international community was not unaware that the federal government had been the biggest cog in the wheel of efforts to tackle Boko Haram because the Jonathan administration had seen the insurgency as its surest ticket to re-election and international acceptance.

‘’That explains their quick dismissal of our call for an international inquiry to unravel the sponsors and modus operandi of the terror group, while latching on to what remains a mere conjecture on the probe of Boko Haram links by the British parliament. Which is bigger and more authentic, a probe by the British parliament or an international inquiry? If the PDP and its cohorts have nothing to hide, they would have embraced that call. We maintain that only an international inquiry can unravel those behind Boko Haram, and we thank Nigerians for their favourable response to our call,’’ the APC said.

The party called the attention of Nigerians to the testimony given by a US official at the US House Foreign Affairs Sub-committee on Africa’s hearing last Thursday in Washington, identifying the human rights abuse record and uncooperative attitude of the Nigerian government and its military authorities as factors hindering the security assistance offered to Nigeria by the US to tackle Boko Haram.

‘’The Congress was told by the Specialist at African Affairs Congressional Research Service, Lauren Blanchard, that the Nigerian government and its military had not been yielding to America’s suggestions; that the main impediment to America’s efforts to support Nigeria’s broader response to Boko Haram is ‘gross violations committed by the Nigerian forces, the Nigerian government’s resistance to adopting a more comprehensive approach to Boko Haram and the continued lack of political will’.

“The Congress also heard that the  Nigerian government has appeared reticent in some cases to allow its security forces to participate in US training programmes, adding: ‘Multiple systemic factors further constrain the effectiveness of the Nigerian security force’s response to Boko Haram, notably security sector, corruption and mismanagement, and some of these factors impede US support even for units that have been cleared for assistance.’

‘’Does anyone need any more evidence of whose cluelessness and incompetence have allowed Boko Haram to fester to such a level that it has killed over 3,000 people since the beginning of this year alone? Does anyone need further evidence of whose non-cooperative attitude with the US and other foreign friends of Nigeria has been responsible for the failed and tepid efforts to tackle Boko Haram?’’ it queried.

Explaining the genesis of the blossoming insurgency, APC said it was an undisputed fact that Boko Haram emerged against the backdrop of intense poverty and political misrule by the PDP since 1999.

‘’Since the return to democratic rule in 1999, the PDP has ruled Nigeria till date, and has been responsible for mismanaging over 60 per cent of national revenue. Still, very little has changed in terms of progressive improvement in the socio-economic conditions of most Nigerians. It is hardly a coincidence that Boko Haram emerged in the North-east region of Nigeria, given that it is the poorest region with is higher than national average rates of poverty, illiteracy, mortality rates, youth unemployment and social immobility.

‘’Moreover, states in the North-east receive some of the least allocations from the national treasury individually and collectively. The North-east region, reflecting broader national and even African patterns, is experiencing a ‘youth bulge’ that accentuates the socio-economic deprivations across the region.

“Given the poor literacy rates of the region, there are millions of young people with neither formal nor Arabic education, not to talk of even vocational skills. Indeed, a majority of youth in the North-east region are unemployable, thus providing a fertile ground for the recruitment of idle youths into groups that engage in criminal acts.

‘’In short, the PDP’s failure to deliver credible democratic dividends specifically socio-economic progress (employment, social infrastructure, quality of life initiatives, regular power supply etc) and its obsession with retaining political power at all cost and a ‘do or die politics’, provide logical grounds for the horde of security challenges witnessed across Nigeria since 1999,’’ the party said.

Backing up its claims that the Jonathan administration is profiting from the Boko Haram insurgency, the opposition party said the PDP was using the crisis to launder the image of the Jonathan presidency by securing attendance and participation for President Jonathan at important international summits and meetings.

‘’Curiously, Boko Haram has become a way of getting the international community to talk and meet with President Jonathan and gain international media coverage. The PDP-led federal government is also using the Boko Haram crisis, especially the #BringBackOurGirls campaign to blackmail the main opposition party and the civil society, impose emergency rule in states and areas controlled by opposition political parties, harass and restrict media freedom (through military clampdowns), and to justify other illegal activities.

‘’The Boko Haram crisis is readily used by the PDP to rationalise the Jonathan administration’s abdication of its constitutional responsibilities, including visits and assistance to areas affected and effective response to kidnappings and abductions. For instance, the administration was silent over the Chibok girls kidnaps for over 15 days. Little wonder that it took the visit of the Pakistani girl education campaigner, Malala, to Nigeria to force President Jonathan to now promise to meet the parents of the over 200 school girls who were abducted over three months ago in Chibok.

‘’Under the guise of ensuring security, the Maiduguri Airport has been closed, hence the Borno State governor and the people of the state, including the pilgrims heading to lesser Hajj, have been forced to travel by road to Kano to board their flights. However, the reason for shutting the airport has suddenly vanished as the private plane bearing Ali Modu Sheriff was allowed to land at the airport on Monday, the same day the Governor had to travel by road to Kano to see his brother who was involved in an accident on the same road!

‘’It is also not a secret that billions of naira have been allocated to security in order to tackle the Boko Haram menace, yet our troops have not been adequately equipped to confront the insurgency. “

“One wonders what happened to the huge funds allocated to the anti-terror fight. Against the backdrop of the huge war-chest that the Jonathan administration has amassed ahead of the 2015 elections, one can easily understand who such funds have evaporated into thin air.

‘’Also, the Boko Haram crisis and the Jonathan administration’s response to it must be seen in the context of 2015 elections. The status quo favours the PDP and President Jonathan. Why? Because Boko Haram affected areas and indeed the northern region are opposition strongholds, hence the administration is hoping that the Boko Haram crisis, the declaration of emergency rule and general atmosphere of insecurity in the North will lead to the cancellation of voting in some areas and limit voters’ turnout in general, a development which the PDP believes will minimise its electoral losses in the North and enhance the likelihood of a PDP victory,’’ APC said.

The party reiterated its position on the Boko Haram crisis, saying it had no links whatsoever to the terror group and challenged anyone with contrary information and proof to present such to Nigerians without delay.
It also restated its earlier recommendations for resolving the crisis, saying any solution that would be effective must be multi-faceted, since scorched-earth military tactics alone had failed to quell the insurgency.

Some APC Leaders Want Me Out, Says Sheriff

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 36 Second

Former Governor of Borno State and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has said some self-acclaimed leaders of the party do not want him in the party after all the sacrifices he has made towards its formation.

The ex-governor has been  linked with plans to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following some misgivings over the handling of the party’s congresses and national convention.

However, a close associate of the APC chieftain, Dr. Umar Duhu, who spoke in an interview with THISDAY yesterday in Abuja, described the purported  plans as a rumour, saying at present, the ex-governor was still consulting across the country.
“To the best of my knowledge, what I know is that after the convention, a lot of things came up and Sherriff understood that the so-called leaders of the party do not want him in the party and with a lot of sacrifice he had made for this party, he now felt if people can come and dine with him and then turned behind him and castigate him, that means APC does not want him,” he said.

Duhu, who is a former interim national vice-chairman of APC for the North, explained that Sheriff  had  made huge sacrifices  for the party, adding that he had donated more than N50 million to ensure the success of the APC registration as a political party during the formative processes last year.

“As I am talking to you today, Sherriff is still consulting with his people so that he can carry everybody along if he is going to dump the party. He is not only the party leader in Borno State but a national leader of the party, he was the chairman, Board of Trustee of ANPP, and so he has people across the 36 state of the federation. He is still talking to a lot of people so that if he is going to dump the party finally, he is going to carry all these people along.

“Sherriff  bankrolled the activities of the party particularly in the North-east zone and even in the country because during the registration period, he donated a lot of money running into more than N50 million for the success of the registration processes. I was the one that handed the money personally, so if somebody can commit himself to that extent and you say he has alienation with the party, that shows that something is fundamentally wrong.

“He is an international businessman, two-term governor of Borno State, three times member of National Assembly, so how can somebody of this status not have links with the government?

“He has been in government and you cannot be an island of yourself. Definitely, the president in power, whether from your party or another party, you must be loyal to him, and you will remember that the present president has been deputy governor when Sherriff was governor, so why would he now say Sheriff will not have friendly relationship with him?, he asked.

10 Top Things Nigerians Now Accept as Normal

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 37 Second

Here are ten things I have identified as top abnormalities Nigerians now just surrender to or even accept as normal. As a matter of fact, they are essentially Nigerian in outlook and any attempt to change them might even affect our corporate image. They are as Nigerian as the green-white-green flag. Yet, there is nothing “normal” about them and a good, conscientious leadership can change them.

1.    Electricity: Gradually, Nigerians now have accepted that it is normal not to have or expect electricity. So when the Power Ministry under Professor Chinedu Nebo, recently announced a drop of 2000 megawatts from the existing 4000 megawatts, no Nigerian even commented. Also, when the power authorities speak of strikes, everyone looks away, uncaring.

That is the new way. In my nick of the wood in Abuja, we even have a time table for light. There are off days as every part has its own “light day”. You plan your schedules in strict adherence to this time table. The other day, we had two days of uninterrupted power supply. My law-abiding neighbours became worried and collectively went to report the “anomaly” to NEPA (Nigerians still calls it that in spite of all the name change).

2.     Bad Roads: What you do about bad roads is not to complain. The skill you must get is how to navigate the craters and gutters in a way to save your tyres the ordeal. Since one big man spent a whopping 300 billion naira on roads without any visible change, Nigerians have resigned to fate, accepting their lot on the road of life (no pun intended).

3.     Electoral rigging: That elections are going to be rigged is not the issue. You knew it was going to happen as sure as the sun sets in the East. What you don’t know is the latest methods. Rigging are now even transparent, free and fair. You knew the poll was rigged but exactly how, you haven’t the faintest idea. At the end, you accept the result as the people’s wish. May be the new system is to allow the people do the rigging themselves. Self-reliant rigging!

4.     Corruption: Poor EFCC! They now pick every soft target they can find; quickly post their photos on the internet- just to keep the façade of waging a war against corruption. And they indeed are waging a war against petty thieves, leaving out the shot-callers and the well connected rogues who even run the anti-graft agencies.

Yes, folks. The monster is waxing strong and many now only appease it with platitudes. This is the one that may never go away because it has become a duly registered conglomerate in its own right. What you do is try to see how much of it doesn’t affect you but it is everywhere you turn. Deal with it.

5.     Killer Convoys: You already know about that. What you don’t know is the madness of it all and why the big men choose to risk their lives and that of others in this manner. First, the convoys are a way of saying “look, we are different from you”. Then, it is the ultimate sign that you had arrived.

I know a certain speaker (House of Assembly) who upon getting sworn in, called his aides aside and said “Please, ensure the sirens are the loudest in this state”. He wasn’t satisfied even with his aides’ reassurances. One day, he actually “supervised” the compliance by lowering his window to listen to the sweet sound of power. Only in Nigeria!

6.     Lack of cash: Welcome to the era of cashlessness. I laughed when I first heard of the CBN inspired cashless policy. If you asked me, Nigerians did not even notice the fact that the policy officially took off on July 1, 2014. Why? Nigerians have been living without cash since the start of the current dispensation. The skills we have learnt as a people is how to have enough cash to keep you alive till the next money enters your hand.

How more cashless can an already listless, struggling people get? By the way, a certain supermarket I went the other day pretending to be operating the cashless stuff had difficulty with the machine. The batteries ran down and there was no light to power the damn device. The hapless customer just gave cash – good old cash – and left.

7.     Violence: The other day, Miss Malala came to town. A foreign news medium said she was risking her life by coming to Nigeria as if it was here she was first shot at.  But that is new reality! Our country is now in the same category as Somalia, Syria and the other demonised nations of the world.

With thousands getting killed each week, Nigerians are now insensitive. An editor told me the other day that he was tired of all the stories of killings and abduction going on in Borno State. And he wasn’t being callous. He was merely accepting the new norm – the fact that a bomb blast now sounds like the knockouts we like throwing around at xmas when we were innocent.

8.     Defection: Politicians now move around the political parties like some girls looking for where to shop for the latest Brazillian hair. There was a time when to defect from a party was the ultimate decision by a politician. It would make headlines. But now, you just yawn when you hear of it.

9.     Strikes: Strikes have become a comedy out here. In some climes, strikes are the biggest of crisis. But now, unions just get together to have fun – threatening and then backtracking! Industrial actions don’t have any value anymore. They are actions without a corresponding action from the authority that has learnt that after a while, the strikers would get tired and seek any kind of settlement.

Let’s strike out the strikes, please!
10.    Skewed court judgments: No one even expect justice from the courts anymore. You only went there because you were either dragged there against your wish or that you went because you didn’t know where else to turn to.  At the end, you are disappointed by the quality of justice dispensed, even if it was in your favour.

Is Pope Francis ushering in the New World Religion?

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 13 Second

Revelations 13:11, “And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.” In this verse, God reveals that there is coming a man that will portray himself as a lamb, but he will speak like a dragon. When referring to the Word of God, a lamb represents one of innocence (Jesus Christ); whereas a dragon is usually used as another name for Satan. When looking at these two key points, one will begin to see that this man will try to present himself as being one of innocence; having the spirit of God, but inwardly housing the spirit of Satan. The bible tells us that a house divided cannot stand. A person cannot house the spirit of God and the spirit of Satan. We must be holy because our bodies are the temple of God. We must represent the light, and be the light of the world as instructed in Matthew 5:14.

According to Saint Malachy, there would be a total of 112 Popes that would reign on the earth before the end of the final Age would come; the Apocalypse. According to Saint Malachy, the final Pope would be known as Peter the Roman. He would likely be Satan; taking the form of a man named Peter who will gain allegiance throughout the whole world. Malachy believed that this final Pope would be the final antichrist. If you would like to see how Pope Francis connects to Peter the Roman, click here

The 112th prophesy given by Malachy states, “In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will reign Petrus Romanus who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which, the seven-hilled city (Rome, the seat of the Vatican) will be destroyed, and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End.”

Malachy’s prophesies regarding the previous Popes have been said to be accurate. This is why Pope Francis should be looked at very carefully. Pope Francis has been saying and doing some very interesting things that makes Revelations 13:11 come to life. Six months after Pope Francis took his papal seat, he assured atheists that they don’t have to believe in God to go to heaven. He has stated that the Catholic Church should not dismiss gay marriage. He has also stated that everyone, including atheists, are redeemed through Jesus Christ.

Pope Francis has completely been abusing the scriptures, and has not been teaching from the true, authentic word of God. He tries to carry himself as a humble servant; washing and kissing the feet of inmates, praying for the sick, and refusing to live and drive lavishly. In reality, he is speaking against the true God. He is corrupting the minds of the masses by teaching falsely and leading many astray.

In Daniel 9:27 it states, “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” Pope Francis has made huge strides in trying to salvage the failed attempts, by John Kerry, regarding the Peace Agreement. For nine months, John Kerry tried to bridge the gap between Palestine and Israel; creating a two-state solution. This peace agreement was supposedly meant to create peace amongst the nations.

Pope Francis welcomed the Israeli and Palestinian presidents to the Vatican for peace prayers on June 8th shortly after the peace negotiations collapsed. All three of these individuals prayed in the Vatican garden; praying to their own gods. Ironically on this same day, a huge asteroid, known as the Beast, passed the Earth.

1 Thessalonians 5:3 states, “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” Interestingly, when the peace talks failed in May of 2014, there was an uproar in the Middle East, and it has been intensifying ever sense.

The Pope has been working towards uniting all religions into one; saying that all people can go to heaven regardless of who they worship. He further tells people that as long as you have a good conscience that’s all that matters. If you want to pray to Buddha that’s fine. If you want to pray to Muhammad, that’s fine. If you want to pray to the god of Ra, that’s fine. As long as you have a good conscience, that’s all you need.

Pope Francis is misleading many people with this type of thinking. He is carrying out his mission; which is to form the “One World Religion”. It is not by accident that this asteroid, the Beast, flew pass Earth the exact day the Pope held a prayer in the Vatican garden where everyone prayed to their own gods. This was a clear sign that the “Beast” is rising! Revelations 13:1 says, “And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.”

A beast is an inhumanly cruel, violent, or depraved person. Inhumanly is defined as a person that lacks sympathy and/or compassion. The beast that is rising up is not a person per se, but it is a system that will be extremely cruel and will lack compassion for all of humanity. This beastly system is a New World Order. This New World Order will be man's version of how the World will operate; this will be Satan's time to completely rule the world before Jesus comes back to finish him off for good.

Many people that spoke about this New World Order, over the years, were labeled conspiracy theorist; crazy. Now, you find President Obama, Joe Biden, John Kerry, and other government officials speaking about this same New World Order openly. Speaking about the New World Order before would get you laughed at, now it is a clear reality. It is important that people pay close attention to what is going on. The news is being bombarded with events on a daily basis that’s leading to the manifestation of Jesus’ return.

Conspiracy theorist were intentionally given a bad rep by the media. This was done to keep people in the dark; mocking those that were trying to warn the masses of what was really going on. This whole world has been programmed to believe a lie. Deception is all around us, and God is trying to reveal the truth.

If you have fallen in love with the world, now is the time to remove yourself from it. Those that are in love with the world cannot see the danger that is coming, and that is already here! Please WAKE UP! Time is dwindling quickly!

Dora Akunyili Would Have Been 60 Today: Read Husband’s Posthumous Tribute

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 53 Second

Today, 14th July 2014, the late Minister of Information/ex-NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili would have been 60 years old. But she bade the world goodbye on Saturday, 7th June 2014. Her widower Dr. Chike Akunyili today wrote a 1-page most-touching tribute on his late wife themed ‘We Miss You Mummy’. Excerpts:

“Our darling Dora would have been 60 today if she were to be alive. But she is no more – felled 37 days ago by the mortal enemy, death, on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Beloved Dora, you had eagerly looked forward to this day.

But alas, you never lived to see it. We deeply love you,Mummy. It was our wish never to let you go. But when death comes, what can we do than to submit to the will of the Almighty?

“Dearest Dora, We very sincerely admire the decent character in you and those dreams of a golden future for Nigeria for which you were ever ready to sacrifice your life during your days as NAFDAC DG. Without good people in politics, good leadership will remain elusive. Thus your hunger to make Nigeria a great brand via “Good People, Great Nation”.
“Your life was an enduring legacy of truth, courage, integrity, love of your country, pursuit of excellence, love of your family and friends, and total devotion to God. Your commitment to any undertaking attained force and vigor that will surely travel through the centuries. You never held back whatever you could do for the common good.Your numerous good deeds, infectious smiles, peaceful but firm nature, steely personality and motherly love are all unforgettable. No amount of darkness can overpower the candle you lit and raised high for all to see. In pain the children and I accept your exit.
“He who is love hath called thee home and bade thee thy labour cease.Thou art safe in His eternal love and never ending peace. Dora, lay down thy head on thy Saviour’s breast( as you usually did on mine whenever you were extremely tired). Nigerians all eulogize you and appreciate the numerous trees you planted for future generations to enjoy. We love you dearly but God loves you more. Sleep peacefully in His bosom. Peace, Perfect Peace, Dora The Amazon.”
In a related development, the  family of late Professor Dora Akunyili has rubbished the report making the rounds that they are at war over her final resting place.
Speaking on behalf of the Akunyilis on Saturday, July 5, 2014, the family’s media adviser, Mr. Isaac Umunna, said the story is baseless and leaves much to be desired.
“The story doesn’t make sense. As obtains in most other parts of Igboland, Anambra women, at death, are buried in their husband’s place. Why should Dora be an exception?”
The social media was awash with the story: “Family in bitter war over Dora Akunyili’s final resting place,” all through the week.
The report claimed that while many Nigerians are yet to come to terms with the death of the former Minister of Information and Communications at a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India, her immediate family members are said to be divided on where to bury the fallen amazon.
According to the unconfirmed report, those in the know said that while Dora’s husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili is insisting that his late wife should be buried in Agulu, his hometown as tradition demands, her immediate family members are demanding that she should be buried at her parents’ home in Nanka, Anambra State.
It was further alleged that the elders of both Agulu and Nanka met over the matter before the remains of the former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), was flown into the country, weeks back.
Still in the report was a list of dignitaries attending the August 28 burial of the late emeritus professor. It included the Vice President, Namadi Sambo; the Senate President, David Mark; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal as well as state governors and other eminent Nigerians.
After ENCOMIUM Weekly forwarded the story to Dr. Chike Akunyili through Professor Dora Akunyili’s media adviser (Isaac Umunna) he replied thus: “This is a baseless and very irresponsible story. Please note as follows:
(1) No single person is quoted in the story.
(2) In Igboland, a woman is usually buried in the husband’s place when she does. Agulu and Nanka are no exceptions.
(3) As a member of the burial committee, I can confirm there is no truth whatsoever in the claims in the fabricated report. We have been working with both the Akunyili and Edemobi families and there is no disagreement whatsoever on the issue of where Professor Akunyili would be buried. (Edemobi is Dora’s maiden surname).
(4) Mentioning names of top government officials to attend the burial at this point is premature. The burial committee has neither compiled nor sent out any invites for the burial. So, it is premature to identify specific people expected at the burial.”
Professor Dora Nkem Akunyili died on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Her remains were flown back from India (where she passed on) on Wednesday, June 11. The family didn’t waste time to fix August 28, 2014 as the icon’s burial date. A burial committee was equally set up days after to ensure the former Anambra guber and senatorial aspirant is given a befitting burial.
But the committee had barely sat when news filtered in from Agulu and Nanka, Anambra (the homes of the deceased) alleging there is a bitter disagreement over where she would be buried.

Mbaise Catholic Priests protest Vicar-General Appointment

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 27 Second

What is remaining of the Catholic Diocese of Ahiara Mbaise in Imo State was last week laid bare as more than 200 priests from the diocese trooped out to protest the appointment of one of their own, Rev. Fr. Clement Ebii as the Vicar General of the Diocese by the Apostolic Administrator, John Cardinal Onaiyekan.

The priests, it was learnt, also sponsored the Catholic Women Organisation to embark on another round of demonstration to force Cardinal Onaiyekan to withdraw that appointment, saying the appointment of Fr. Ebii was part of the “desperate attempts of Cardinal Onaiyekan to further cause the internal crisis in the diocese”.
The appointment of Fr. Ebii followed the resignation of Rev. Fr. Professor Louis Asiegbu last April, whose advice that the pro-Bishop Okpalaeke priests should not be given viable parishes(as part of their punishment), was ignored by Cardinal Onaiyekan, who instead, posted one of the priests, Fr. Chima Ahaneku to St. Patrick’s Parish Umuokrika Ekwereazu.

While some of the protesting priests, who demonstrated at the Mater Ecclesiae Cathedral, Ahiara Mbaise, accused Onaiyekan of trying to use the appointment of Fr. Ebii to bring back the “rejected” Bishop Okpalaeke, others accused Fr. Ebii of scheming to become the new bishop of the diocese.

One of the protesting priests and Editor-in-chief of The Guide (Ahiara Diocese Newspaper), Rev. Fr.Kingsley Anyanwu, described the appointment as weird, saying that Fr. Ebii had not been in good standing with the diocese since three years now.

247ureports.com learnt from another priest that the main reason for the rejection of Fr. Ebii as the Vicar General was because “he is one of the eight Ahiara Diocesan priests who have been working hard for the installation of the rejected and impeded Bishop Okpalaeke in Ahiara Diocese”.

The priest who did not mention his name said, “In his determination to bring Bishop Okpalaeke back to the diocese, Fr. Ebii has done so many unspeakable things to discredit the presbyterium of Ahiara Diocese. Just last month, he reported to the police authorities in Owerri and Abuja that the priests of Ahiara Diocese were out to kidnap and murder him. He later submitted the names of eight priests of the diocese for being responsible for the attempted kidnap and murder”.

The priests accused Fr. Ebii of detesting the fellowship of his fellow. “He does not attend priests’ monthly recollection neither does he attend priests’ annual retreats. He has refused to meet up with his obligations to the diocesan chancery office. He has more than 55 debts to the diocese hanging around his neck.”

Investigations by 247ureports.com reveal that following the manner some senior priests schemed to become the bishop of the diocese after the death of Bishop Victor Chikwe by mudslinging others, as well the manner many priests in the diocese behaved towards Bishop Okpalaeke, Fr. Ebii, a parish priest of Rose’s Catholic Church, Ihitte in Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA, decided to avoid their association.
Since then, he had bluntly refused to pay burial levies for deceased fellow priests as well as refusing to allow his parishioners to participate in any common activity of the diocese as well as imposing sanctions on any of his parishioners that participates in the diocesan or deanery ceremonies.

He was said to have rejected senior seminarians posted to his parish for the six-week Apostolic work.

During the crisis last year where the priests stopped Bishop Okpalaeke from assuming office, Fr. Ebii was said to have declared publicly that he had broken communion with the Ahiara Diocesan Presbyterium until further notice, describing the actions of the priests of the diocese as antichrist and demonic.

With this in mind, the priests vowed that they would not be alive to see Fr. Ebii superintend over them as the vicar.

It was gathered that the priests had instigated the members of St. Patrick’s Umuokrika to reject the posting of Rev. Fr. Chima Ahaneku to the parish by Cardinal Onaiyekan, citing his supportive role to the rejected Bishop Okpalaeke

Army Denies Embezzlement Of $43m Soldiers Peace Keeping Allowance

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 43 Second

The Nigerian Army has denied the diversion of $43m meant for the settlement of officers and men on peace-keeping missions by some army generals. The army made the clarification in reaction to an online media claim that the amount, which has been set aside for peace-keeping had been pocketed by the unnamed generals in the Nigerian Army.

The Army in the clarification posted in its website on Sunday, made it clear that there had never been any case of embezzlement of funds meant for peace keeping operations. The army claimed that though some of its officers and men who had returned from Peace Support Operations had not been fully remunerated, it had never recorded any case of embezzlement of funds meant for such operations.

“Perhaps if the authors of the petition had gone a little further towards due diligence, it would have found out that the Nigerian Army has never in any way denied that some troops who had concluded their tour of duty in some Peace Support Operations were yet to be fully remunerated.

Nevertheless, there is no case of embezzlement as alleged in the report,” the army said.“It is noteworthy that the long process of streamlining the procedure for securing funds for Peace Support Operations goes beyond the Nigerian military establishment. It involves the procedures and protocols of mission-sponsoring agencies such as the United Nations, African Union and ECOWAS among others.“It is therefore curious that this misleading information is coming at a time when the major issues are being resolved and payment has actually commenced on the basis of the order of entry or exit of the various Nigerian Contingents (NIBATTS) into the Peace Support Operations.

“It is thus expedient to state that it is not in the character of the Nigerian Army to toe the path of embezzlement as the said anonymous petition or its publishers have attempted to ascribe to the leadership of the Nigerian Army or the military as an institution.

Jonathan Meets PDP Govs, Mu’azu on Re-election Bid

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 33 Second

In a move aimed at paving the way for his declaration to contest the 2015 presidential election slated for February, President Goodluck Jonathan will, at 9 pm today, meet all the governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as well as the National Chairman of the party, Adamu Mu’azu.

Prior to meeting the governor, they will be expected to meet at the Asokoro, Abuja residence of the national chairman with other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party before proceeding to the Presidential Villa to meet with the president and some key cabinet members.

A presidency source told THISDAY that the second meeting between the president, governors and Mu’azu is expected to be the icebreaker, as Jonathan would use the opportunity to inform the party and the governors of his decision to seek a second term in office.

According to the source, “The decision to officially inform the party and the governors stems from his recognition of the governors as being the field commanders in their states and it would not be fair for them and the party to get the information of his decision to seek re-election secondhand.”

Though it is common knowledge that Jonathan’s loyalists have been showcasing the achievements of his transformation agenda, he has not officially declared his intention to seek re-election.

THISDAY further gathered  that the PDP governors, in their first meeting with Mu’azu and NWC, will be expected to re-table their demand for those completing their second terms to play a role in who succeeds them, while those in their first terms would be asking for automatic tickets to seek re-election.

The source told THISDAY, “You don’t discard a winning team and cause trouble by calling for primaries when you know that some of the governors are interested in second terms in office. We have to first give the governors on their first terms, the right of first refusal.”

Equally, the South-south governors and other stakeholders of the party will tomorrow meet in Calabar to ratify the nomination of Hon. Cairo Ujuogbo as the new National Vice Chairman of the party.

This is as a result of the vacuum created with the appointment of Dr. Steve Oru as the Minister of the Niger Delta Ministry. Oru was the former National Vice Chairman for the South-south geopolitical zone.
Immediately after Oru was confirmed minister by the Senate, the Delta State PDP chapter summoned a meeting for the replacement of the new minister.

The meeting was attended by PDP stakeholders from the Senate, House of Representatives, Delta State House of Assembly, and the state governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan. Others who attended the meeting were Chief Edwin Clark, Mu’azu and the Chairman of the PDP in the state, Peter Nwaobosi.
At the meeting, Ojougbo was unanimously nominated to take over from Oru, as the office of the National Vice Chairman had been zoned to Delta State.

NIGERIA: APC Endorses International Probe of Boko Haram Sponsors

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 34 Second

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed support for the international inquiry into the activities of Boko Haram with a view to unravelling its modus operandi and ending the debate about who is behind the terror group, the party’s spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said yesterday.
APC’s statement coincided with crisis of confidence that has rocked the campaign for the rescue of over 200 abducted female students of Government Secondary School, Chibok, following allegations that the main opposition party had penetrated the ranks of #BringBackOurGirls protesters to score political points, THISDAY has learnt.

The allegation, which was brought to the attention of the British parliament and is being investigated by Nigerian security agencies, was said to have been triggered by revelations by a UK-based agency, Burson Masteller, that it was recently contacted by some leaders of the APC to facilitate a visit by the campaigners to the United States of America where the group was scheduled to meet with some top US officials and project the federal government as doing nothing to rescue the abducted girls.

Even though the alleged US trip by the protesters was eventually cancelled at the eleventh hour, the consultant was said to have been paid heavily to lobby interest groups in the US and rally public opinions against the Nigerian government.

A letter published by a US-based online news agency which is already being analysed by the security agencies also disclosed that the same Burson Masteller recently signed a deal running into hundreds of thousands of dollars with a prominent Nigerian businessman with strong links to opposition political leaders to organise a series of advocacy visits and public relations contacts with prominent members of the UK and US parliament, foreign media representatives and a host of other bureaucrats in the two countries.

This development is coming against the backdrop of a recent disclosure by the Department of State Security (DSS) that the ♯BringBackOurGirls movement was maintaining various bank accounts, suggesting that its campaigns were sinister in nature.

Even though the allegations were denied by one of its coordinators, who is also a former Education Minister, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, THISDAY learnt that the disclosure by Messrs Masteller that it was approached by leaders of the opposition party on behalf of the group is said to be generating ripples among some members of the group who believe there might indeed be some underhand dealings in the objective of the group which might only be clear to all of its members.

Investigations have also shown that the insistence by the group on being briefed by security forces on their strategy to rescue the Chibok girls might be a ploy to frustrate such efforts.

However, the APC has endorsed the international inquiry into the activities of Boko Haram, stating that the unraveling of the sponsors should be done with a view to ending, once and for all, the debate over who is behind the insurgency and also to facilitate efforts to tackle it decisively
In a statement issued yesterday by Mohammed, the party said the inquiry should include intelligence experts from the US, UK, France and Canada, as well as representatives of the UN and Nigeria’s neighbours – Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

It also said representatives of the Nigerian military and other security agencies, especially the police and DSS, governments of the states worst-hit by the Boko Haram insurgency, including Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Kano, Bauchi and Jigawa, the Federal Capital Territory, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Civil Society Organisations, the Nigerian Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and any other relevant individual or group, should be included.
APC said major political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party and APC, must be represented on the panel of inquiry, whose findings must be made public and those found to have any links with the insurgents be made to face the full wrath of the law.

“We hope the PDP-led federal government, which has led the incessant but baseless campaign to point accusing fingers at the opposition, especially our party the APC, will give its total support to the immediate constitution of this international panel of inquiry.

“We have no doubt that the international community will give its unalloyed support to this inquiry, in view of the trans-national nature of the insurgency and the threat posed by terrorism to global peace and security,'” the party said.

APC added: “On our part, we pledge our total support for this inquiry anytime it is launched, but hopefully very soon. Our party, which is barely one year old, has been at the receiving end of diversionary, carefully choreographed and blatantly irresponsible point-blank accusations as well as insinuations of sponsoring Boko Haram, not minding that the group's activities date as far back as 2002 when there was no APC.

“These accusations and insinuations have become so virulent and have indeed reached a level where one begins to wonder whether those behind the finger-pointing are actually trying to divert attention from their own culpability and whether they have even more sinister motives for their finger-pointing.
“Enough is enough. The daily killing, maiming and abduction of innocent Nigerians, as a clueless federal government looks on, must end. The pervasive insecurity that has crippled Nigeria since this insurgency started must be halted. Those behind it must be unraveled and prosecuted. Let the inquiry begin!”

But in reaction to APC’s statement, the PDP yesterday said that it found it very curious that the statement by the main opposition party calling for international enquiry to unravel the sponsors of terrorism in the country was coming less than one week after an inquest into its links with the insurgency was tabled before the British parliament.

In a statement yesterday by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, the ruling party said APC’s statement betrayed a party that had become “unsettled and highly apprehensive following the increasing demands by British parliamentarians for an enquiry into its links with the insurgency and violence ravaging our dear nation”.

“We ask, is the APC in a desperate move to pre-empt the British parliament for fear of indictment or are they seeking to promote an orchestrated inquest to exonerate themselves?
“We urge Nigerians to see beyond the surface, to continue to be alert and note the actions of the APC and their efforts to frustrate the genuine fight against insurgency and terrorism in our country,” he said.
