Working from home DOESN’T work, says PM Boris Johnson

  • Boris Johnson has in interview slammed out-of-office culture across Whitehall
  • The PM has said full workplaces will be ‘more productive’ and ‘more energetic’
  • It comes as he says 50 ‘illegal entrants’ will be sent to Rwanda in fortnight

Working from home doesn’t work, Boris Johnson declares today as he calls for a return to the office.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, the Prime Minister says full workplaces will lift productivity and revive town and city centres.

Taking a swipe at the out-of-office culture that has taken hold across Whitehall, he adds: ‘My experience of working from home is you spend an awful lot of time making another cup of coffee and then, you know, getting up, walking very slowly to the fridge, hacking off a small piece of cheese, then walking very slowly back to your laptop and then forgetting what it was you’re doing.’

He claims staff are ‘more productive, more energetic, more full of ideas’ when surrounded by colleagues. He says: ‘I believe in the workplace environment.

‘And I think that will help to drive up productivity, it will get our city centres moving in the weekdays and it will be good for mass transit. And a lot of businesses that have been having a tough time will benefit from that.’

In the wide-ranging interview, the Prime Minister also vows to change the law if ‘Leftie lawyers’ obstruct plans to send Channel migrants to Rwanda.

He says that he is ready to ‘dig in for the fight’ against those seeking to block ‘the will of the people’.

Mr Johnson reveals that the first 50 ‘illegal entrants into this country’ have already been served notice that they will be sent to Rwanda within a fortnight.

But Government sources say they are braced for a blizzard of legal claims under human rights laws.

Asked whether he might respond with a review of the European Convention on Human Rights, Mr Johnson replies: ‘We’ll look at everything. Nothing is off the table.’

In other developments:

  • Unions threatened strike action over plans to axe 91,000 civil servants;
  • The PM warned EU leaders he was ‘not bluffing’ over moves to tear up the Northern Ireland Protocol;
  • He predicted Britain could avoid a recession, despite gloomy economic data;
  • A consultation was launched on increasing the number of children who can be cared for by a minder, in a bid to cut costs;
  • Ministers agreed to delay a ban on supermarket promotions of unhealthy food;
  • Mr Johnson warned Vladimir Putin to ‘find a way out’ of the war in Ukraine;
  • He hinted he is considering a drive to persuade over-50s to return to the workplace.

Ministers are locked in a struggle with Civil Service unions over the working from home culture in Whitehall.

Tens of thousands of officials are required to attend the workplace for only two or three days a week, and unions are resisting a full return.

Cabinet Secretary Simon Case is expected to launch a major push on the issue in the coming weeks, amid concerns that failure to return to the office will damage long-term productivity.

Ministers have blamed large-scale working from home for the huge backlogs built up at the Passport Office and DVLA.

The PM says flexible working has a role to play but will damage productivity and creativity if allowed to become the norm.

He says he is ‘not antediluvian about technology…things like Zoom and Teams can increase productivity, rather than just be an excuse for people to stay at home.’

But he adds: ‘We need to get back into the habit of getting into the office. There will be lots of people who disagree with me, but I believe people are more productive, more energetic, more full of ideas, when they are surrounded by other people.’

Members of the FDA union, which represents senior civil servants, this week said work was ‘no longer a place’ and urged ministers to drop ‘indiscriminate demands… for civil servants to return to office-based working’.

Jacob Rees-Mogg yesterday warned the calls from unions could lead to employers ‘offshoring’ their staff.

The Brexit opportunities minister told LBC Radio: ‘It’s a very privileged thing to say – for people in manufacturing, work is a place, for people cleaning work is a place, for security work is a place, for millions of people across this country work is a place.

‘The idea that civil servants should swan off abroad to do their job is slightly giving the game away, that this isn’t about efficiency, this is about lifestyle.

‘Unless of course the FDA means that they’d like us to go for offshoring, but I’d be very surprised if a Left-wing trade union thought the answer to problems was sourcing cheaper labour overseas.’

The PM’s plan to send potentially thousands of Channel migrants to Rwanda is designed to smash the business model of people-smuggling gangs by breaking the link between boarding a dinghy in France and achieving a new life in Britain.

The plan has provoked howls of protest from the Left. Legal claims against the initiative have been lodged at the High Court before removals have even begun.

But the Prime Minister says he is determined to drive the plan forward

EFCC arrests Ahmed Idris, Accountant General for alleged N80b fraud

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been arrested by serving Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Ahmed Idris, in connection with the diversion of funds and money laundering activities to the tune of N80 billion.

He was arrested yesterday in Kano State and was immediately moved to Abuja last night. EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the arrest in a statement. He said the funds were allegedly laundered through real estate investments in Kano and Abuja.

“The Commission’s verified intelligence showed that the AGF raked off the funds through bogus consultancies and other illegal activities using proxies, family members and close associates,” Uwujaren said.

According to sources, after progress was made in the investigation, Idris was summoned repeatedly by EFCC for interrogation, but he failed to honour the invitations.

“We kept inviting him, but he kept dodging us. We were left with no choice but to keep him under watch and arrest him,” the source said.

President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Idris as AGF on June 25, 2015. The position became vacant at the time after the former Accountant General, Jonah Otunla, left office on June 12, 2015.

President Buhari reappointed Idris for a second four-year term in June 2019, amid criticisms from labour groups, who said the accountant-general should retire after turning 60.

A source said the AGF should have retired more than a year ago as a civil servant, “but when he clocked 60, the President’s men caused an extension. Now see the result of an illegal extension. It was the same time the tenure of Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) was extended too by the President against public service rule.”

Idris, a native of Kano, was born on November 25, 1960, and was until his appointment in 2015 the Director of Finance and Accounts, Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.

Muslims who kill Christians in Nigeria over blasphemy won’t smell Paradise – Gumi

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 15 Second
Sheikh Ahmad Gumi

Muslims who kill Christians in Nigeria over blasphemy will not smell Paradise, popular Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has declared.

He was reacting to the killing of a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE) Deborah Samuel over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad last Thursday.

Gumi stated categorically that Nigeria is not an Islamic state, adding that Muslims have an agreement with people of other faiths to live together peacefully.

He said any Muslim who kills Christians with whom they have agreed to live peacefully on religious guise has committed a grievous sin.

The Islamic scholar spoke in one of his preachings at Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna.

He said it is unfortunate some Muslim clerics were quoting verses they don’t understand and telling people to kill whoever insults their religion.

Quoting some Quranic verses and jurisprudence, the cleric said killing a non-Muslim under the guise the person uttered a blasphemous statement against Prophet Muhammad is not an excuse “because Allah has told us in the Qur’an the non-Muslims will insult Allah and His Prophet. In fact, it is now the blasphemy that will start after the killing of that lady in Sokoto, the insult will increase, not reduce.”

Gumi said some Muslims in Nigeria that want to defend Prophet Muhammad should be ashamed of themselves because they are corrupt.

He explained the best way to defend the Prophet is to follow his teachings.

According to Gumi: “We the clerics need to wake up and teach the Muslims their religion. We must leave this state of ignorance, we have turned like animals. We the Muslims are not the only ones in this country.

“It is not only that we are not the only ones in this country, we must know that there was nothing the unbelievers did not do to Prophet Muhammad but he was patient because he was conscious that if he killed them, the unbelievers he was trying to bring to the fold of Islam will tag him a killer.

“There are people who are neither Muslims nor Christians in Nigeria, and everyone is trying to win their souls. Also, there are people who are not Muslims, whom we are preaching Islam so that they can enter the fold of Islam and be salvaged in the hereafter.

“If we now begin to kill people, they will say it is even from the leader of our faith, Prophet Muhammad, that we have learnt it. They will say their religion is a religion of bloodletting. At a time we are trying to draw the attention of people to see the beauty of Islam, we are now scaring them away.

Alleged blasphemy: Atiku distances self from deleted Facebook, and Twitter posts

Read Time:2 Minute, 47 Second

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has distanced himself from a deleted post on his verified Facebook and Twitter pages condemning the killing of Deborah Samuel after coming under a barrage of threats from fanatics of northern origin who asked him to forget his presidential ambition.

The Nation had reported some angry fanatics killed and burnt Deborah over alleged blasphemy at the Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE) Sokoto on Thursday.

She was killed in the premises of the College after being accused of insulting Prophet Muhammad (SAW), during a hot argument with fellow students.

The post of the former vice president was made around 10:20 p.m on Thursday, but checks by The Nation show they were deleted less than an hour later.

Both posts had generated thousands of reactions and backlashes within minutes, according to a screenshot.

Most of the comments were from fundamentalists who warned the politician to stay away from condemning the murder of the Christian student.

View Post

The now-deleted post of Atiku reads: “There cannot be a justification for such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered, and all those behind her death must be brought to justice,”

“My condolences to her family and friends.”

In another post in Hausa posted on the verified Hausa Facebook handle of the People’s Democratic People (PDP) presidential aspirant, Atiku claimed the post wasn’t from him, stating that any post that does not come with AA should be disregarded.

The translated post reads: “This evening I received information that a post was made that doesn’t agree with my orders. I use this to announce that any post without AA is not from me. May God protect – AA.”

Minutes after Atiku deleted the tweets, tweeps took to their handles to vehemently react to the development hereby making the PDP aspirant trend on Twitter.

Popular tweep, Morris Monye said: “Atiku was not really sympathetic. Tried to appease the South, saw the reaction from the North, deleted. He feels it’s better not to offend the North than offend the South because Southerners are slaves and will vote for him anyways.Our politicians are the wickedest people on earth.”

Lecturer Ogbeni Dipo Awojide tweeted: “Such a good tweet from Atiku Abubakar condemning the brutal murder of Deborah Yakubu. It’s really embarrassing it was deleted, especially after his silence about the Pantami saga.”

Shehu Gazali Sadiq said: “Atiku Abubakar deleted his tweet condemning the murder of Deborah in Sokoto because Muslims are threatening not to vote for him. His ambition is more important than human life.”

Comedian, Mr Macaroni said: “Atiku deleting the tweet condemning the gruesome murder of Deborah shows what we have been preaching this whole election season.

“Politicians don’t care for the people. They only play to the gallery when seeking for our votes. The people must see beyond these gimmicks.”

Yasir Kabir said: “Let him be informed that he has already lost our vote, and in shaa Allah he’ll not be president ”

Godzilla tweeted: “Atiku Abubakar basically wanted to play politics with the death of a person killed by the religious mob, when same people come for him, he deleted his condemnation of their acts, people that in the first place will not vote for him. This man should not be president”.

Video: Chelsea Handler, Conan O’Brien Get Naked and Fight in the Shower

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 38 Second

Who knew Conan O’Brien was hiding that buff body under all those suits? On Wednesday, April 3, the TBS late-night personality showed off his surprisingly toned torso when he snuck up on fellow late-night host Chelsea Handler in the shower — part of a sketch for the comedienne’s E! Network show, Chelsea Lately. Handler, 38, was just about to lather up when a naked O’Brien, 49, appeared next to her and began to pick a fight.

“Oh no, not again!” Handler lamented, alluding to her previous shower confrontation with a nude Sandra Bullock. “How do people keep getting in here?”

“This is my studio. You stole it, remember? I still have the key. Plus, this is the best water pressure in Hollywood,” O’Brien replied with a hint of faux anger.

The hosts — both still naked — then proceeded to argue over who was more deserving of the studio and its posh parking space, which is “four inches wider” than O’Brien’s parking space at his new studio. He also accused her of taking and using his beloved back massager.

“I do use that back massager,” Handler fired back, adding lasciviously, “Although I had no idea it was for my back.”

“Just be a man,” O’Brien challenged her. “Admit what you’ve done.”

“I am not a man!” Handler exclaimed. “Everybody knows that I am the first woman in late night.”

“No, that was Joan Rivers,” O’Brien corrected her. To which Handler replied, “Have you taken a good look at her recently?”

The hilarious war of words continued to escalate into an actual physical fight, with Handler slapping O’Brien around and yelling at him to hit her. By the end of the sketch, both stars had (fake) black eyes.

“I feel fantastic!” O’Brien said afterward.

“Good for you, you surprisingly sexy son of a bitch,” Handler quipped. “Now soap me up!”

Chelsea Lately airs weeknights at 11 p.m. EST on the E! Network.
