The wreckage of the Indonesian twin-turboprop aircraft carrying 54 people, which lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday in the remote, forested eastern Papua region, has been found.
According to Yahoo News, "Officials said the wreckage was spotted about 12 kilometers (7 miles) from Oksibil, and Henry Bambang Soelistyo, the chief of the National Search and Rescue Agency, said search and rescue teams were preparing to try to reach the crash site by air and foot."
The leader of the rescue operation team, Soelistyo said "Smoke was still billowing from the wreckage when it was spotted by a plane search."
He also added that "bad weather and rugged terrain were hampering efforts to reach the wreckage located in a mountainous area at an altitude of 2,600 meters (about 8,500 feet)."
The President of Indonesia, Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called "for a moment of silence and pray for the crew and passengers ahead of our independence anniversary."

Ugochukwu, 23, was on Sunday found hanging in his apartment in Festac when his mother and two siblings returned from Church.
The mother, Ngozi, and her children quickly raised an alarm, bringing all the neighbours to the scene. The case, which saw the young man hang himself from the ceiling, was transferred to FESTAC Police Division.
According to a Police source, the deceased did not give any clues as to why he took his own life.
He said:
“Nobody can say why he committed suicide. But two Sundays ago, they caught him mixing cement to drink. The family members had actually gone to church, and he had stayed behind. It was a neighbour who caught him and alerted the family members.
But all efforts made to find out from him, what went wrong reportedly proved abortive, as he refused to tell anyone anything, including his mother.
This morning, the family members went to church again, and Ugochukwu decided to stay back. Nobody suspected anything. It was when the family members came back that they found his corpse.”
Another neighbour who spoke only on the condition of anonymity, said:
“Ugochukwu’s father’s whereabouts are unknown, but the boy has a younger brother and an elder sister.
The corpse has been taken to the mortuary. Since he finished secondary school, he had not been able to secure admission. He took the UTME again this year.
Everyone knows him as someone who did not talk too much. But no one knew exactly why he committed suicide. He was not working. He was usually at home. They were staying in a room and parlour. They are an average family.”
Another neighbour, Oluja, said:
“I am shocked that Ugochukwu has passed on. I just returned from my church, only to learn that Ugochukwu was found hanging in his apartment.
It was the policemen from FESTAC that took his body away. Everyone in the area is still in shock.
I know that he had been worried about his admission to the University."

The crisis in strife-torn Burundi risks spiralling into a "catastrophe' for the country and the wider region, the African Union warned on Sunday, after the killing of a senior military official amid escalating unrest.
Unidentified gunmen killed Colonel Jean Bikomagu, a former chief of staff, outside his home in Bujumbura on Saturday. It was the second high-profile assassination this month as the fallout from the re-election of President Pierre Nkurunziza worsened in the central African nation.
Nkurunziza was declared winner of elections held in July, for a third term that both opponents and Western powers said violated the constitution and provisions of a peace deal which ended a 1993-2005 civil war between the Hutu majority and Tutsi minority.
Neighbouring Rwanda, which shares a similar ethnic population and where a 1994 genocide killed 800,000 people, has also expressed its concern over the unrest.
In a statement, AU Commission chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma condemned Bikomagu's killing.
Zuma "underlines that this ignoble act and many other violent acts in Burundi these last few months illustrate the gravity of the situation and the real risk of further deterioration with catastrophic consequences for the country and the whole region," the statement said.
Bikomagu was army chief during the civil war that started in 1993 when the Tutsi-dominated army was fighting Nkurunziza's CNDD-FDD Hutu rebels.
The election-related violence has been especially frequent in the capital Bujumbura, where the sound of gunfire is regularly heard at night.
The Geneva office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said last week that at least 96 people had been killed since the start of election-related unrest in April and urged leaders to renounce violence and resume their political dialogue.
Zuma "insists once again on the imperative of dialogue and consensus to work for a peaceful and durable solution to the crisis and to preserve the important points in the 2000 Arusha Accord," the statement said.
Burundi's security council, headed by Nkurunziza, said late on Saturday that it has asked for rapid investigations and the arrest and trial of the perpetrators behind the recent killings.

A committee has been set up by the Federal Government saddled with the responsibility of recovering government property from former government officials.
During a chat with some newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the situation.
Shehu said "That is precisely the case, even here at the Villa, there are cars and other property belonging to the government which are yet to be returned."
"Imagine how much Nigeria will save by retrieving and re-using these government properties instead of purchasing new ones for new government officials,’’ he said.
Sources close to the Presidency have revealed that a number of former government officials are still in possession of vehicles, buildings, generator sets and other entitlements that came with their previous positions.
According to the sources, in spite vacating their various offices almost three months ago, many are yet to return these government properties.
To this effect, government has set up a committee made up of civil servants and security agents to recover the unreturned public assets from the political office holders, who had left office.
According to Shehu, the Buhari’s administration will soon begin to demand for the return of these assets.
He stressed that the aim was not to embarrass anyone but to return the properties to government.
"The properties belong to the Nigerian people. We are not trying to humiliate anyone by asking them to return their cars or houses," he added.
When asked whether the state and local governments were facing similar challenges with retrieving government property from their predecessors, Shehu said that he was not in a position to confirm or deny this.
He, however, added that he would not be surprised if that was the case, as this attitude of holding on to government property "even after leaving office must be a natural outcome of the culture of impunity that has prevailed in Nigeria over the past years of PDP rule. But change has come; that is why we have to do things differently now.’’
He reiterated President Buhari's commitment to running an austere government that would save the Nigerian people millions in public funds.
