President Muhammadu Buhari, today, June 29, 2015, reportedly appointed former Military Administrator of Kaduna State, Hamidu Ali as his Chief of Staff.

The news has been received with widespread surprise as it had earlier been rumoured that former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola would be appointed to fill the post.

Despite not being appointed Chief of Staff however, Fashola can still be a tremendous asset to the Buhari administration.

An 80-year-old blind Kenyan man, Samuel Gicheru, caused a stir at a District Court in Narok in the Lake County area of that country when the prosecutor told the judge that he was caught having sex with a chicken.

Gicheru was charged and convicted after he pleaded guilty to a charge of animal cruelty.

The prosecutor said that Gicheru went over to his house to investigate when they heard noises, thinking thieves had broken into the blind man's home. But they were shocked on arrival to see Gicheru having sex with the chicken.

He was arrested and handed over to the police who charged him to court.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has been accused of petty theft and is also alleged not to be a citizen of Nigeria.

The allegations were made on Sunday, June 28, 2015, by controversial online news platform, Sahara Reporters via Facebook and are backed with supposed photo evidence.

“Bukola Saraki: The President of the Nigerian Senate Is not Even A Nigerian Citizen,” the first post on SR’s Facebook page read.

In accusing Saraki of theft, SR said:

“Some police officers found out that Bukola Saraki, who is Nigeria's Senate President, was a petty thief as of 1990, he was actually charged with theft of N510,000 at Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria. The officers warned in a report that Saraki was about to liquidate the bank by looting it, but no one listened until his siblings, cronies and relatives eventually did.”

Since the accusations were made, many have criticized the platform and editor Omoyele Sowore as it’s believed that Saraki is being attacked due to his falling out with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Saraki has been at loggerheads with the party since his emergence as Senate President on June 9.

The situation was further aggravated after he defied the party again in choosing principal leaders of the Senate on June 25.

The President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the latest Boko Haram attacks in Borno and Yobe states, describing the terrorists as “cowards who lack any moral inhibition and any iota of humanity to reason compassionately.

He said they will not be spared in Nigeria.

”They will not find Nigeria a safe haven, because “they would be hunted down without mercy and compromise,” he assured.

This is contained in a statement issued by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu.

The President said he is deeply touched by these mindless incidents of violence on innocent people during the month of Ramadan.

According to the President, the terrorists are enemies of everybody, and enemies of humanity everywhere.

He said, "no sane people who believe in any God would be destroying the lives of innocent people in cold blood, terrorists don’t represent any religion.’’

The President said the pattern of the terrorists' indiscriminate violence against innocent people has shown that they represent nothing else but anarchy and devilry.

"In what appears to be one of his toughest expressions of outrage, President Buhari reminded the terrorists of his uncompromising resolve to tackle them with all the resources at the disposal of his government.

“Make no mistake about it: this government is ever determined to discharge its fundamental duty of protecting the lives of its citizens from physical threats from any groups bent on creating chaos, confusion, and on destroying social and economic life of the people,’’ the statement said

Buhari, who extended his sympathy to the families of the victims, reassured all Nigerians that his government would never succumb to terrorist's blackmail, and that the security forces would confront the Boko Haram bandits to the last man.

He reassured Nigerians that security would be tackled by his administration with vigorous determination.

The President, however, advised Nigerians to show more vigilance and be alert to the presence of suspicious people around them, adding that “the terrorists are enemies of religion and humanity.”

He explained that “no true believers in any God would target worshipers, holy places, or people who are fasting and other innocent Nigerians.”

President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in on May 29, 2015, exactly one month ago.

In this time Buhari has shown that the priorities of his government will be the fights against terror and corruption, but he has also shown that he is in no hurry to bring the change he promised.

This can be seen from the President's lack of a cabinet 30 days after his inauguration.

Staunch supporters of the President are urging Nigerians to be patient with their new leader, who no doubt has a lot of work ahead of him.

However, after witnessing an almost endless period of corruption and ruin in the country and most recently being troubled with fights in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the National Assembly, most Nigerians just wish their President would get on with it and stop wasting precious time.

Below are the highs and lows of the Buhari administration:

HIGHS:

    Inauguration Day: Buhari’s election win proved to Nigerians that citizens of the country could indeed control their fate. On his inauguration day, the atmosphere was thick with hope for a new beginning and he revitalized the nation when in his speech he said “I belong to everybody and to nobody”.

    Relocation of military command centre: While giving his inaugural speech, the President declared that the military command centre against terrorism would be relocated from Abuja to Maiduguri, Borno State in order to intensify operations against terrorist sect, Boko Haram.

    Attendance of G7 summit: Buhari’s attendance of the G7 summit was a sign that the world was ready to take Nigerians seriously.

    Niger and Chad visits: Shortly after being sworn in, Buhari visited Chad and Niger to begin talks on the formation of a concrete joint multinational force against Boko Haram.

    US donation to terror fight: Within the first month of the Buhari administration, the US announced that it would be donating $5 million to the fight against terror in Nigeria.

    Dissolution of NNPC board: Buhari recently ordered the dissolution of the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The NNPC has been plagued with allegations of fraud in the handling of Nigeria’s vast oil wealth.

LOWS:

    Delayed Cabinet: One month after he took office, President Muhammadu Buhari has not appointed any ministers into his cabinet. The appropriateness of this in a country that is already on edge is highly questionable.

    APC fight: The disagreement between members of the APC on National Assembly leadership positions has disappointed many Nigerians who have now come to expect a fragmented reign from the current ruling party.

Buhari still has a term of four years to complete so there’s still time for him to begin working miracles in this country which desperately needs them.

However, the general message that Nigerians seem to be passing to their new President is: “Quickly sir! Quickly!”

Former Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bisi Akande has said that the emergence of Bukola Saraki as Senate President and Yakubu Dogara as Speaker of the House of Representatives was backed by Northern elites and oil barons who feel threatened by President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war.

Akande also described the rebellion as a ‘conspiracy of the North against the Yoruba.’

The APC chieftain made the comment via a statement released on Sunday, June 28, 2015.

It reads:

 “Before the party knew it, the process had been hijacked by polluted interests who saw the inordinate contests as a loop-hole for stifling APC government’s efforts in its desire to fight corruption.”

 “Most Northern elite, the Nigerian oil subsidy barons and other business cartels, who never liked Buhari’s anti-corruption political stance, are quickly backing up the rebellion against APC with strong support. While other position seekers are waiting in the wings until Buhari’s ministers are announced, a large section of the Southwest see the rebellion as a conspiracy of the North against the Yoruba.”

 “Now that the whole conspiracy has blown open, it is doubtful if the present institutions of party leadership can muster the required capacity to arrest the drift. It is my opinion that President Buhari, and the APC governors should now see APC as a wrecking platform that may not be strong enough again to carry them to political victory in 2019 and they should quickly begin a joint damage control effort to reconstruct the party in its claim to bring about the promised change before the party’s shortcomings begin to aggravate the challenges of governance in their hands.”

Saraki and Dogara contested and won the positions despite being excluded by the APC via a straw poll.
