Falling oil prices threaten my agenda — Buhari

Read Time:4 Minute, 13 Second

ABUJA—THE President- elect, General Muhammadu Buhari yesterday painted a gloomy picture in the economic development of his administration as he said that the decline in the revenues due to fall in oil prices poses a great threat to his administration’s development agenda.

Gen. Buhari who visited the newly elected Senators and House of Representatives members who are undergoing induction course in preparation for the 8th National Assembly in Abuja also said that the decline in revenue would affect the reconstruction of devastated areas in the country as a result of insurgency.

He reminded the elected members of the 8th assembly of the challenges the nation had been facing which he also said would continue in the near future.

The challenges according to him include general insecurity and insurgency that has caused extreme human hardship and destruction of lives, livelihoods that would take over a decade to rebuild across most of North Eastern Nigeria and some parts of North western Nigeria.

Another threat to his administration according to him was the devastation and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta area which he said must be attended to.

Others include, “endemic corruption which has crippled human and infrastructure development for decades. Unacceptably poor provision of power supply which has had a crippling effect on development of small businesses and indeed the wider economy.

“Deindustrialization for the past three decades leading to closure of many industries and migration of many to other African countries. Unacceptably high levels of unemployment and especially Youth Unemployment reaching over 40 per cent.”

Besides, Gen. Buhari mentioned high cost of governance that has been crowding out the nation’s capital and human development, erosion of public social services such as infrastructure, health and education as well as lack of development in the agricultural and solid mineral sectors as areas that should be aggressively addressed.

While soliciting the support of the lawmakers, the President-elect said, “The legislature is a critical component and necessary ingredient of democracy and good governance. The legislature by nature is inherently democratic in the sense that all members are equal and are elected representatives of the Nigerian people.

“As President-elect, I recognize this fact and believe that legislators carry this heavy burden of representation with all the seriousness it deserves.

“For a president to be successful in addressing community development and general welfare of the various people of the country, he or she would benefit from working closely and in harmony with the legislative arm of government.

“I therefore commit myself to working with the legislature as development partners motivated by the desire to deliver good governance”.

He commended President Goodluck Jonathan for the role he played in the sustenance of democratic institution by accepting election result, saying that Nigeria was in the threshold of history.

Bemoaning high cost of governance, he said, “First and foremost, appropriate policies need to be put in place and such policies may have to be translated into laws.

“Secondly, the oversight functions of the legislature is critical in ensuring that policies are implemented effectively and transparently. Therefore, my mission to bring integrity into governance would better succeed if complemented with a strong culture of transparent oversight.

“We need to collaborate on the budget process and restructuring of the public sector so as to collectively tackle the menace of high recurrent cost at the expense of capital and human development.”

“There is an urgent need to contain this high state of insecurity. All of you are representing various communities. We need to work together to address the problem from both its roots and manifestations.

“The strongest mitigating forces at this point are to redress the power sector deficits, encourage investments that are job creating and focus on human development and reconstruction. We also need to deploy efforts in conflict resolution and peace building in all our communities.

“I am here today, to invite you to work with the executive as partners in progress, as champions of good governance and development and as warriors for change. Together, we can make this nation great and as a role model in Africa and other emerging economies and democracies.”

President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly, David Mark, who ushered in the President-elect into the International Conference Centre, in company of other leaders of the National Assembly, described the visit as historic.

Noting that it was the first time a President-elect was considering it worthwhile to address a joint session of the National Assembly, Mark agreed it was a historic meeting in the journey of democracy.

For the Speaker, House of Representative and Governor-elect, Sokoto State, Honourable Aminu W. Tambuwal, Buhari has extended a hand of fellowship to the legislature by his personal visit.

Tambuwal however expressed hope that his colleagues would reciprocate Buhari’s gesture by also extending a sincere hand of fellowship to the President-elect when his government fully takes over.

Read Time:1 Minute, 0 Second

The gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba state, Aisha Alhassan, has rejected the outcome of the governorship rerun election announced on Sunday, April 26, 2015.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Darius Dickson Ishaku of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) the Governor-elect in Jalingo on Sunday, after the supplementary election.

Speaking to newsmen in Jalingo on Sunday shortly after the declaration, Alhassan said PDP's ‘victory’ is ‘daylight robbery,’ stating that the APC will contest the outcome at the elections tribunal.

“The combined governorship elections in Taraba were characterised by violence, massive rigging, ballot snatching and abuse of the card readers in substantial parts of the state by the PDP and their allies,” the serving senator said.

She said election results from  Wukari, Donga, Takum, Sardauna, Zing, Yorro, Kurmi and some parts of Ussa, Karim-Lamido, Bali, Ardo-Kola and Lau local government areas are unacceptable, noting they do not reflect the will of the people.

INEC had declared that Ishaku won 10 local government areas in the supplementary election, with accumulated votes of 369,318 to beat Alhassan who got 275,984 votes.

Citizens protest President’s 3rd term candidacy, police kill 2

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 6 Second

The people staged a protest against the third term bid of the country’s president, Pierre Nkurunziza, when two of them were killed by the Burundian police and four injured, the Red Cross said.

Police reportedly dispersed the protesters in Bujumbura with water cannon, tear gas and in some cases live bullets.

The government had banned all protests, pro or anti Nkurunziza's third term rerun.

According to reports, the law of the land stipulates that a President can only serve two terms, which makes a third attempt a violation of the constitution.

African leaders and Western nations have urged Nkurunziza not to run again.

The United States and the European Union have said they could take punitive steps if violence erupts as a result of the president's rerun.

"We counted two protesters killed by police, four others were injured and one is in coma in hospital after being hit by a bullet," Alexis Manirakiza, Burundi Red Cross spokesman said.

Burundi's ruling CNDD-FDD party nominated Nkurunziza as its presidential candidate on Saturday, April 25.

Critics say the move goes against the spirit of a 2000 peace deal. The peace deal has kept Burundi calm for a decade since a civil war between ethnic Hutus and Tutsis ended in 2005.

Ex-Footballer claims Yobo’s mother-in-law cheated on him with a woman

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 12 Second

Retired Wimbledon and England striker, John Fashanu, has claimed his wife, Abigail Onyekwelu, are currently enmeshed in a messy divorce following allegations of extra-marital affairs from both parties.

On his part, the ex-football legend claims Abigail, who is Joseph Yobo's mother-in-law, cheated on him severally with a woman she refers to as her spiritual partner.

In an interview with the UK Mirror, 52-years old Fashanu said, 'The truth is she’s been cheating on me with a woman she calls her spiritual partner. I caught them in the bed many times. That was why I kicked her out of my house.'

However, 48-years old Onyekwelu denied Fashanu's accusations saying, 'She is a good friend to me. She has a husband and children. It is ridiculous. She was living with me for a while to get back on her feet.'

On been kicked out of the house, the grandmother, who recently welcomed a grand son, said, 'He didn’t kick me out of his house. We were living in my house. He couldn’t have kicked me out of my own house – I kicked him out.'

In an interesting twist, the beautiful Onyekwelu revealed that she caught the legendary footballer cheating on her with her maid and an unidentified woman in their bed.

In her words, 'I caught him in bed with two women, the housemaid and one other woman. There were two women, it was awful. They were on the bed. They were undressed. I said to them, ‘Who are you and what’s going on here?

'He told me that he doesn’t know what he’s doing and I should pray for him. He knows how to manipulate people, that’s one thing he is good at,' she revealed.

However, Fashanu denied the allegation saying, 'I certainly don’t have to sleep with my cleaner! This is me, John Fashanu, you’re talking to. It’s absolute nonsense. If she wants to make up that story, at least let her say it’s Beyoncé or someone.

'Don’t say it’s my cleaner, that’s just b******s. It’s not true at all,' he defended.

While Fashanu disclosed that he already filed for a divorce, Onyekwelu dropped that she didn't know he was going to file for divorce because he had been the one begging her not to expose their separation to the world.

Nepal Terrorized by Aftershocks, Hampering Relief Efforts

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 51 Second

KATMANDU, Nepal — A growing sense of despair spread through Katmandu on Sunday as the devastated Nepali capital was convulsed by aftershocks that sent residents screaming into the streets, where they were pelted by heavy rain.

A day after an earthquake killed more than 2,400 people and injured about 5,900, residents grew frantic and the government, entirely overwhelmed by the enormousness of the challenge facing the country, struggled to provide relief, or much hope.

Streets in parts of this city of about 1.2 million were impassable, not so much from quake damage but because tens of thousands of people have taken up residence there. It was a strategy endorsed by the government.

The already difficult situation in much of the capital, where safe shelters are scarce, was made worse Sunday when rains began to pour down on huddled masses.

It is increasingly evident that authorities here were ill-equipped to rescue those trapped and would have trouble maintaining adequate supplies of water, electricity and food.

“In my neighborhood, the police are conspicuous by their absence,” said Sridhar Khatri of the South Asia Center for Policy Studies in Katmandu. “There is not even a show of force to deter vandalism, which some reports say is on the rise.”

VIDEO

{youtube}Ivej0TxPcZ8{/youtube}

On Sunday, the government began setting up 16 relief stations across Katmandu and the rest of the country while rescue operations continued. The relief stations are expected to ease distribution of water, food and medicine, said Laxmi Prasad Dhakal, a spokesman at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Electricity has been intermittent at best in Katmandu, and absent entirely in other parts of Nepal, but that is not wholly unusual in a country where nighttime blackouts are routine.

Many hotels, commercial buildings and wealthy homes in the capital have their own generators. But nearly all of the country’s gas and diesel supplies are brought in from India, and with traffic reduced to a crawl along major highways, those supplies could dwindle quickly. Some gas stations in Katmandu have already run dry; others are rationing their remaining supplies.

Thousands of Katmandu’s residents squatted on streets throughout the city, either because their homes had been destroyed or because continued aftershocks, including one of magnitude 6.7, left them too afraid to go back inside. Other residents were camping out in schools, school playgrounds and government offices.

The government announced that schools would remain closed for at least five days, and it pleaded with government workers to help in local rescue efforts in place of their usual jobs.

Stephen Groves, who lives in Katmandu, said he had been inspecting a building for cracks shortly after noon on Sunday when the biggest of many aftershocks hit, leading to terrified screams from those nearby.

“The whole time I was thinking if the building next to me was going to come down on top of me,” Mr. Groves said in an email. “People here are in a panic, and every aftershock contributes to that. They are not going indoors, they are staying in the roads and in open areas. Many are searching for family members.”

Mr. Groves said he had gone to a hospital in the capital on Saturday, where hordes of people were lying on the ground outside the building, many with intravenous drips hooked up to their arms and shocked looks on their faces.

The city was awash with rumors that the worst aftershocks were yet to come and with fears of greater destruction in the countryside, large swaths of which remained unreachable by phone.

Subhash Ghimire, the editor in chief of the Nepalese newspaper República, said he managed to reach his father in his village, home to about 3,000 people, near the epicenter in the Gorkha district. “He said not a single house is left in our village, including our own house,” Mr. Ghimire said.

On Mount Everest, helicopter rescue operations began Sunday morning to take wounded climbers off the mountain, where at least 18 climbers were killed and 41 others injured, making the earthquake the deadliest event in the mountain’s history. Three Americans were among those killed, according to the State Department.

Aftershocks and small avalanches throughout the day Sunday continued to plague the nearly 800 people staying at the mountain base camp and at higher elevation camps.

After posting on Twitter that he was “fairly safe but stuck” at the base camp, a climber, Jim Davidson, then provided a more alarming update from Camp 1, which is above the base camp.

Nick Talbot, 39, was attempting to be the first person with cystic fibrosis to climb Mount Everest when a 100- to 200-yard wall of ice and snow came barreling toward him.

“I ran away,” he said in an interview. “I thought, ‘There is no chance I can get away.’ I just had my socks on. It knocked me into the rocks. I got up and it knocked me over again.” he said. He was evacuated by helicopter Sunday afternoon. He returned without anything but the clothes he was wearing. All of his belongings were buried by the avalanche.

“I’m sure there will have been many fatalities just because the scale of it,” he said.

Tulasi Prasad Gautam, director general of Nepal’s Tourism Department, said he feared that continued aftershocks had trapped more climbers. In addition to the dead and injured, nearly 25 climbers who had been en route Saturday to Camp 2 from Camp 1 are missing.

“Actually, the tents are still there for some 20 to 25 climbers who were heading towards Camp 2 in the course of climbing practice, but they are not in contact,” Mr. Gautam said.

In a blog post Sunday, Eric Simonson of International Mountain Guides said the news from the Everest base camp “was quite bleak,” and that the company’s encampment “has been turned into a triage center, and our big dining tents are now being used as hospital tents.”

“The tons and tons of falling ice going this vertical distance created a huge aerosol avalanche and accompanying air blast,” he wrote. “It is worth noting that over many expeditions we have never seen an avalanche from this area that was even remotely of this scale.”

Susan Parker-Burns, a spokeswoman from the United States Embassy in Nepal, said Sunday in an email that a rescue and relief team from the United States Agency for International Development was sent by military transport to Nepal, and that it would arrive on Monday.

Also Sunday, the Israeli military said that it was preparing to send two Boeing 747s carrying 260 aid workers and more than 90 tons of cargo to Katmandu. About 600 Israelis are believed to be in Nepal, a popular destination for young backpackers after their compulsory military service. Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency medical response organization, had already sent an advance team of 10 paramedics and two doctors to Nepal.

Nepal will most likely require significant help. The country’s existing political discord is likely to hamper rescue and rebuilding efforts. The government has been barely functional for more than a decade, with politicians of just about every stripe fighting over the scraps of the increasingly desperate economy. A 10-year civil war between Maoist parties and the government ended in 2006, but the resulting Constituent Assembly spent four years trying to write a constitution without success. Paralysis ensued until elections in November 2013 led to the unexpected rout of the previously dominant Maoists.

Nepal’s people had already become exhausted with the political paralysis, but those feelings could turn explosive if relief and rescue efforts fail in the coming weeks, analysts said. The fear of just such an outcome could spur an intense international relief effort, as an odd collection of countries — including China, India and the United States — were already cooperating on pushing Nepal’s politicians toward compromise.

NEPAL EARTQUAKE: Death toll hits over 1, 900, Mount Everest shaken

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 51 Second

Following a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal  at about noon on Saturday, April 26, the death toll continues to rocket.

With the initial deaths count put at 688 – updated report say over 1, 900 people have been confirmed dead so far, and officials say it could still rise.

Reports say world’s tallest mountain, Everest, is threatened as the quake triggered a mass of ice falling rapidly down at the mountain base camp. About 18 climbers have been reported dead, and some British nationals who were among the tourists are missing.

One of those killed at the base camp was a Google engineer and avid climber, Dan Fredinburg, who had sought to take the company’s Street View project to the world’s highest mountains. “Sadly, we lost one of our own,” Google said in a statement.

The quake started from outside Kathmandu, the South Asian country’s capital, and the effect hit neighbouring countries like India, Bangladesh, Tibet and Pakistan, leaving a total of 50 people dead.

AP reports that hospitals in Nepal are overcrowded and health workers overwhelmed – they are out of rooms to store dead bodies and lacking enough emergency supplies to treat hundreds of injured people being brought in at quick intervals.

SEE VIDEO

{youtube}croClMjJf0E{/youtube}

Speaking to AP, the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon said, "the reports of the devastation are still coming in and the numbers of people killed, injured and affected by this earthquake continue to rise. It is clear that very many lives have been lost. There has also been significant damage to Nepal's irreplaceable cultural heritage."

Nepal is best known for tourism, its rich Hindu culture and adventure, especially trekking and Himalayan mountain climbing.

But with its biggest cultural heritage, world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest slightly affected in the quake disaster, it is more than likely that the base camp, or any tourist centre for that matter, will not be open for usual business in months to come, which will put a huge strain its the economy.

The poor country of about 27.8 million people relies heavily on tourism.

APC female guber aspirant loses to PDP candidate

Read Time:50 Second

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress and female governorship aspirant in Taraba State,  Aisha Jummai Alhassan, has lost the race to the People’s Democratic Party’s aspirant, Darius Dickson Ishaku in the rerun election held on Saturday, April 25, 2015.

Alhassan, a serving senator, polled 275,984 votes, losing to Ishaku with a difference of 93,334 votes.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer for Taraba, Prof. Ahmed Kyari, declared Ishaku winner in Jalingo on Sunday, April 26, having won 10 local government areas with accumulated votes of 369,318 at the completion of rerun election.

Alhassan had urged INEC to cancel the entire April 11 election in Taraba State, stating it was marred by electoral fraud – the claim INEC invalidated by fixing April 25 date for a rerun election.

Many Nigerians, in and outside Taraba State, had hugely supported the senator’s candidacy, given that she would have become Nigeria’s first democratically elected governor.
