Pope Francis Declares John XXIII And John Paul II Saints (PHOTOS)

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Two 20th-century popes who changed the course of the Catholic Church became saints Sunday as Pope Francis honored John XXIII and John Paul II in a delicate balancing act aimed at bringing together the conservative and progressive wings of the church.

As if to drive the message of unity home, Francis invited retired Pope Benedict XVI to join him on the altar of St. Peter's Square, the first time a reigning and retired pope have celebrated Mass together in public in the 2,000-year history of the church.

An estimated 800,000 people — many of them from John Paul's native Poland — filled St. Peter's, the streets around it and bridges over the Tiber River, a huge turnout but only half the size of the crowd that came out for John Paul's 2011 beatification.

John reigned from 1958-1963 and is a hero to liberal Catholics for having convened the Second Vatican Council. The meetings brought the church into the modern era by allowing Mass to be celebrated in local languages rather than Latin and encouraged greater dialogue with people of other faiths, particularly Jews.

During his globe-trotting, quarter-century papacy, John Paul II helped topple communism and invigorated a new generation of Catholics, while his defense of core church teaching on abortion, marriage and other hot-button issues heartened conservatives after the turbulent 1960s.

Benedict was one of John Paul's closest confidantes and went on to preside over a deeply tradition-minded eight-year papacy. His successor Francis seems a pope much more inspired by the pastoral, simple style of the "good pope" John.

Yet Francis offered each new saint heartfelt praise in his homily, saying John had allowed himself to be led by God to call the council, and hailing John Paul's focus on the family. It's an issue that Francis has asked the church as a whole to take up for discussion with a two-year debate starting this fall.

"They were priests, bishops and popes of the 20th century," Francis said. "They lived through the tragic events of that century, but they were not overwhelmed by them."

Benedict put John Paul on the fast-track for possible sainthood just weeks after his 2005 death, responding to the chants of "Santo Subito!" or "Sainthood Now!" that erupted during his funeral Mass. John Paul's canonization is now the fastest in modern times.

John's sainthood run, on the other hand, languished after his 2000 beatification. Rather than let John Paul have the limelight with a canonization on his own — emboldening many in the conservative wing of the church — Francis decided to pair him up with John. To do so, Francis tweaked the Vatican's own saint-making rules, deciding that John could be made a saint alongside John Paul without the necessary second miracle usually required.

Francis sounded a note of continuity in his homily, praising John for having called the council and John Paul for helping implement it.

"John XXIII and John Paul II cooperated with the Holy Spirit in renewing and updating the church in keeping with her pristine features, those features which the saints have given her throughout the centuries," Francis said.

During the ceremony, Francis took a deep breath and paused for a moment before reciting the saint-making formula in Latin, as if moved by the history he was about to make in canonizing two popes at once.

As soon as he did so, applause broke out from a crowd in St. Peter's and beyond.

"This is such a historic moment," marveled the Rev. Victor Perez, who brought a group of students from the John Paul High School in Houston, Texas and waited for nearly 12 hours to get near St. Peter's. "John Paul was so impactful on the church. He completed the work of Vatican II. Today honors the last 50 years of what God has done in the church."

In John Paul's native Poland, bells rang out as soon as Francis pronounced the two men saints.

"He changed Poland and he changed us with his teaching and with his visits here," an emotional Maria Jurek said as she watched the proceedings on giant TV screens at a sanctuary dedicated to John Paul in Krakow.

In the Philippines, where John Paul in 1995 drew the largest ever crowd for a papal Mass at 4 million, Filipinos watched the canonization on TV and joined local celebrations, including a suburban Manila parade of children dressed like the pope.

Yet the atmosphere in St. Peter's seemed somber and subdued — perhaps because of the chilly gray skies and cumulative lack of sleep of many of the pilgrims who camped out on streets near the Vatican. It was a far different scene from the rollicking party atmosphere of John Paul's May 2011 beatification, when bands of young people sang, danced and cheered before, during and after the Mass.

Spirits though did pick up after the service when Francis drove through the square and all the way down to the Tiber River in his open-topped car, giving many people their first — and only — close-up glimpse of him.

The Vatican estimated that 800,000 people watched the Mass in Rome, with about 500,000 in the square and nearby streets and the rest watching on TV screens that had been set up in piazzas around town.

Polish pilgrims carrying the red and white flags of John Paul's beloved homeland had been among the first to push into the square well before sunrise, as the human chains of neon-vested civil protection workers trying to maintain order finally gave up and let them in.

And while it was supposed to be a canonization for two men, it was clear that the vast majority of people who turned out were there for John Paul.

"John Paul was our pope," said Therese Andjoua, a 49-year-old nurse who traveled from Libreville, Gabon, with some 300 other pilgrims to attend. She sported a traditional African dress bearing the images of both new saints.

"In 1982, he came to Gabon and when he arrived he kissed the ground and told us to 'Get up, go forward and be not afraid,'" she recalled as she rested against a pallet of water bottles. "When we heard he was going to be canonized, we got up."

Kings, queens, presidents and prime ministers from more than 90 countries attended. About 20 Jewish leaders from the U.S., Israel, Italy, Francis' native Argentina and Poland also took part, in a clear sign of their appreciation for the great strides made in Catholic-Jewish relations under John, John Paul and their successors celebrating their sainthood.

Benedict's presence on the altar with them was as remarkable as the historic canonization itself.

Benedict had promised to remain "hidden from the world" after resigning last year, but Francis has coaxed him out of retirement and urged him to take part in the public life of the church.

During the Mass, Benedict sat off to the side of the altar with other cardinals, though he was clearly in a place of honor. He received the Italian president and a steady stream of cardinals. Francis himself embraced Benedict at the beginning and end of the service.

Benedict had arrived in the square on his own to cheers and applause, wearing the same white vestments and white bishops' miter as other cardinals. The only difference was he had a white skullcap on rather than red.

Dad Caught on Tape Kicking Son Down Skateboard Ramp

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

A man who was caught kicking his son down a skateboard ramp has been banned from a Florida skate park temporarily after a video of the act taken by another skater went viral.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is also looking into footage of the incident, which has elicited angry responses from the Internet and other parents who regularly skate with their children at Kona Skatepark in Jacksonville, Fla.

"It kind of hits right here when you are a parent to see someone do that to a kid," said one father, TJ Smith, who watched the footage later on his phone at the park. "That is somebody who got way too aggressive."

In the video, the child, who is about 6 years old, is seen hesitating with his skateboard near the top of the ramp. The father seemingly becomes impatient with his son and kicks him over the edge.

It was another child, named Stephens, who confronted the father and demanded to know why he did it.

"I asked him why is he doing this, and then he said 'because he needs to learn,'" Stephens said. "I was like, 'Pushing him down is not teaching him how to drop in.'"

Although the boy was reportedly not injured and got back up to skate, according to onlookers, the park's operator, Martin Ramos, said he warned the father not to come back for a while.

"Unfortunately parents get so enthusiastic about their kids and their abilities and sometimes they take it a little too far," Ramos said. "[The father] said he was just caught up in the moment, he seemed very remorseful, he certainly understands the gravity of the situation."

NIGERIA: Obiano, a Registered Voter in Lagos, Ngige Tells Tribunal

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 51 Second
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the November 16, 2013 governorship election in Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige, yesterday mounted the witness box to substantiate his allegation of multiple voter registration levelled against his All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate in the election, Chief Willie Obiano.

He told the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Awka, that Obiano, who won the election, was a registered voter in Lagos.

His testimony came after the Court of Appeal had ordered the tribunal, which had earlier struck out paragraphs relating to Obiano’s alleged multiple registration in Ngige’s petition on the grounds that the claim was a pre-election matter, to restore them.

The Court of Appeal ordered that the claim be heard on its merit and Obiano called to defend himself.
Ngige, during his testimony yesterday, tendered in evidence an extract of the voter register for Lagos State, showing the name of Chief Willie Maduabuchi Obiano as having voted in the 2011 presidential and governorship elections.

Presenting the extract, which was certified by the Lagos office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on April 23, 2014, Ngige told the tribunal that whatever was contained in the register as at the time it was certified remains the same as it was in 2011 till date since Lagos State had not reviewed the register after the last general election.

INEC’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN),  had objected to the tendering of the document  asking Ngige if there was any remark by the electoral commission to confirm that the certified extract was the current one in its possession, but he was overruled.

Obiano had claimed in his deposition that though he registered in Lagos in 2011, he transferred his registration from Lagos to his home town, Aguleri prior to the election.

Obiano’s form EC4B, an INEC’s form seeking information on the particulars of nomination as the candidate of his party as well as Obiano’s CF001, which is a form seeking information on the candidate’s personal data on oath for the election were also tendered before the tribunal.

The certified copy of the INEC register from Lagos as well as forms EC4B  and CF001 were admitted in evidence by the tribunal.
The form CF001 submitted by Obiano, Ngige told the tribunal, contains his voter’s card No 332 which was obtained on September 23, 2013, the same day he allegedly completed the forms which he said was different from his voter card No 11 obtained in Lagos and also different from a third voter’s card obtained, according to Ngige, on August 21, 2013.

Asked by counsel to APGA, Osita Nnadi (SAN), if he did not consider that the review of voter’s register by the INEC was an opportunity to strike out names of the dead, Ngige replied in the affirmative but said it was also an opportunity to remove the names of transferred voters from the register, which was not in the case of Obiano as at April 24, 2014.

He also said he could not report Obiano to the police for prosecution because his party had gone to the Federal High Court, Abuja before the election seeking an order of mandamus for the Inspector General of Police to prosecute him.

NIGERIA: APC Hails Suspension of PDP Rally in Adamawa

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 47 Second
The All Progressives Congress (APC) monday lauded  the reported suspension of a planned rally by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheduled for Adamawa State today, in line with the prevailing mood of the nation, especially the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Borno State.

THISDAY had exclusively reported on Saturday that  President Goodluck Jonathan, who was billed to fly in to Yola today for the rally where the party is expected to receive some defectors into its fold, had shelved the trip.

Prior to the suspension of the trip, the scheduled rally had generated tension in the state following the alleged refusal of the Governor, Alhaji Murtala Nyako, to allow the PDP to use Ribadu Square to host the president.  The governor has however denied the allegation.

The state police command had written the state government, urging it to rescind its decision in the interest of peace.
But  in a statement yesterday in Lagos by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, APC called the suspension the very right decision to take under the circumstances.

It said the suspension of the rally had shown that Jonathan was beginning to hearken to the voices of his compatriots on important national issues.

”As we said in a statement we issued on April 24, it smacks of insensitivity, inhumanity and indecency for our president and other leaders to be engaged in any celebratory venture when we do not yet know the fate of the schoolgirls who were abducted from their school and taken to an unknown destination.

”We also said the president should not repeat the same mistake he made by flying to Kano to dance at a political rally even as the smoke was yet to clear from the scene of the Nyanya bus park bombing. We are delighted that good sense has prevailed this time,” APC said.

According to the party, while the president does not have to shut down the government, he must continue to shun all celebratory public outings until all the schoolgirls have been safely reunited with their families.

NIGERIA: Why INEC is Restructuring

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 59 Second
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday said it had embarked on a restructuring exercise as part of efforts to ensure the success of the 2015 general elections.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in  Ogun State, Mr. Sam Olumekun, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta.

Olumekun, who said  the exercise was not synonymous with retrenchment, pointed out that  it was meant to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the commission in the conduct of the polls. He explained that the development was borne out of a strategic review of previous elections in which some proposals came up and evolved into ‘’election project plan for 2015 polls.”
The re-organisation, according to him, involves the collapse of some departments into directorates and the creation of other divisions.

Olumekun added that it also entailed redeployment of personnel to INEC’s offices across the country as well as welfare  packages to produce a contented workforce that would be committed to the success of the electoral process.

“We have identified seven principal business areas which are very critical to the conduct of any election and we are now in the process of executing the election plan project,” he added.

Olumekun said he had embarked on an assessment tour of INEC’s offices across the state, noting that   the exercise had afforded him an opportunity to interact with various stakeholders.

“It has also helped me to be acquainted with the political terrain of the state which in my view is matured and conducive to the conduct of a free and fair election,” he said.

He  assured residents of the riverside areas in Ogun of timely and adequate supply of election materials to avoid disenfranchisement of the people.

Olumekun also said that the commission was strengthening its voter education programme to produce an enlightened citizenry which  could participate effectively and positively in the electoral process.
He,  however, stressed that voter education was not the exclusive preserve of INEC, but a collective responsibility which would reduce  mistakes as voters  perform their civic responsibility.

The commissioner  called for increased collaboration of various stakeholders in the state to ensure a success of the 2015 polls in the state.

Wike Urges Unity in Rivers PDP for Jonathan’s Re-election

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 26 Second
The supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State to be united to ensure victory for President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 elections.

He also dismissed allegations that the Grassroots Development Initiatives (GDI), his political structure, had hijacked the PDP in the state, stressing that only members of the party would choose a candidate to run for governor in the next election.

Wike spoke when he visited an ex-militant leader, ‘General’ Sobomabo Jackrich (also known as Egberipapa), at his Usokun residence in Degema Local Government Area of the state.

He urged party members who were protesting against the perceived hijacking of the party structures by the GDI to sheathe their swords and work together to ensure that Jonathan is successfully returned for a second term in 2015.

He said: “I urge all of us to unite and work together for the victory of our party in the general election in 2015. Our priority should be how we can collectively ensure the re-election of President Jonathan in 2015.

“I don’t think we should concern ourselves for now on who succeeds Governor Chibuike Amaechiin 2015. We should come together and work for the good of our party rather than allow side talks by our political opponents to set us against one another.”

The minister further stated that as the leader of the party in the state and a loyal party man, he would always abide by the rules and wishes of the party.

He said at the appropriate time, all stakeholders would sit down together as a family to choose who would represent the party in the 2015 gubernatorial election in the state.

The former militant leader, Jackrich, who is the founder of the Kengema Unity Forum (KUF) and the Director General of the Network for the Defence of Democracy and Good Governance, (NDDGG), earlier said the GDI in Asari-Toru Local Government Area was operating as a parallel organisation to the PDP.

“Members of the GDI in our local government area are behaving as if the GDI is superior to the PDP. The PDP is the umbrella body of all other associations to which PDP members belong. Some GDI members are creating division among PDP members which would be inimical to our electoral fortunes in 2015,” he lamented.

He commended Wike’s efforts at ensuring that Jonathan secured a second tenure.

“We acknowledge your loyalty to President Jonathan. We also appreciate the crucial role you played to reposition the PDP in the state. Despite the challenges confronting us, we in the KUF will not relent until the purpose for which the group was formed is realised. We assure you and President Jonathan of our support,” Jackrich said.

NIGERIA: APC Conducts State Congress in Abia, Vows to Become Ruling Party

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 48 Second
The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday concluded the process of installing its leadership structure in Abia State by successfully conducting the state congress during which a 31-member state executive committee emerged.

The ward and local government congresses earlier held by the party had generated controversies but the national leadership of the party was said to have resolved the issues thereby paving the way for the state congress to hold.

About 1,040 delegates participated in the state congress supervised by the state congress committee headed by Chief Sunday Akere with the delegates voting for the candidates, who all stood unopposed.

At the end of the balloting, Mr. Fabian Okonkwo from Umunneochi Local Government emerged as the pioneer chairman of Abia APC with Mr. Smart Ebere from Aba South Local Government took the post of secretary.
The congress, which was conducted at the National War Museum, Umuahia, was held under very tight security which made sure that only elected delegates were allowed into the congress venue.
Speaking with journalists after the congress, Akere insisted that the congress was a success, noting that with no opposing candidates, those that put themselves forward were elected unopposed.

The new chairman of the party, Okonkwo, in his post-election chat with journalists, said with the successful conduct of the state congress the process of making APC a ruling party has commenced.

In his remarks, a chieftain of the party, Chief Ikechi Emenike, said the state congress was free and fair as well as all inclusive, adding that the APC had taken its rightful position and the new state executives should be able to transform the party from opposition to ruling party.
Meanwhile, one of the national leaders of APC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has dissociated himself from supporting any of the factions in the state APC, saying that all members are equal stakeholders.

He made his position known in a statement issued by the South-east zonal spokesman of APC, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, warning that nobody should drop his name in order to gain advantage over others in their quest to control the party’s structure.

PDP Receives APC Defectors, Insists Nigerians Have Rejected Opposition Party

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 21 Second
As the 2015 general election approaches, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said Nigerians have rejected the opposition political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said this yesterday when Hon. Charles Odedo who represents Idemili North/South Federal Constituency, Anambra State, in the National Assembly, announced his defection from the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to the PDP at the party's national secretariat.

Metuh charged the state chapter of the party to deliver 98 percent for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, insisting that the 11 federal constituencies and the three senatorial districts in the state must be won for PDP.

He further said: "From the groundswell of support received by the president on his war against terror and what is happening all over the country, it clearly shows that Nigerians have rejected APC.

"The Christians, Muslims, South, West, East and North have all rejected APC. The message is very loud and clear and it is good Nigerians discovered the stuff APC is made of as early as possible."

While pointing out that there would be no automatic ticket in the PDP primary, Metuh also urged Odedo to join in canvassing support for President Jonathan.
On his return, Metuh informed Odedo that he had the full blessing of the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu, and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to welcome him back to PDP fold.

Earlier, the state PDP Chairman, Chief Ken Emeakayi, extolled the virtues of Odedo whom he said returned to PDP due to the good works that the party is doing and also as a result of the reconciliation efforts in PDP, which restored peace to the party in the state.

Emeakayi explained that Odedo was elected on the platform of PDP and disagreed with the merger that brought about the APC, which was part of his reasons for returning to his party.

He also said the lawmaker would present his letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives yesterday but decided to visit Metuh, as leader of PDP in the state to "take him back as your son.

"He left because of misunderstanding and is now back. He was a lost sheep and we have come to formally present him to you.”

Leader of the state PDP caucus in the House, Hon. Ben Nwankwo, who also spoke, explained that Odedo was a one of the founding members of the party in the state and an asset to the party.
Odedo also said it was the disagreement in PDP that made him decamped to the ACN in 2011 from where he re-contested for the House of Representatives and won.

NIGERIA: Sub-committee on Politics Makes 57 Recommendations

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 2 Second
The sub-committees set up by the National Conference Standing Committees on Politics and Governance yesterday presented 57 recommendations to the main committee.

Co-Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Jerry Gana, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the committee set up six sub-committees.

“The six sub-committees we set up last week are reporting back to the main committee. The main committee will later on have its own overall report to the plenary of the conference.

“The sub-committees have so far made about 57 recommendations but we are structuring them into the various sections of the constitution.

“Later on, we are taking the issue of immunity clause. We have a special paper that has been prepared by very knowledgeable committee.

He said the sub-committee had proposed partial immunity for the president and governors.
“The main recommendation is that we must not allow immunity of criminal cases; anything of criminal nature, nobody should be above the law.

“But on civil matters, we don’t want government to be frustrated because with some small things, people can just frustrate the whole process of governance.

“Therefore, maybe there can be immunity on such matters but on criminal matters, there should be no immunity,” he said.
Gana said that the committee generally deliberated on good governance, good leadership and how the system could breed and ensure that good leaders emerged.

“As you can see, there are so many people that are good but if the system is not democratic and fair and free enough, they may not emerge.

“We are discussing how to ensure that when people are elected, they govern excellently well and that there are also checks and balances in the system to ensure fairness and justice.
The co-chairman said the sub-committees would likely conclude presentations of their reports to the main committee on Tuesday.
According to him, the committee was not contemplating seeking extension of time adding, “we are doing very well and will do our best to meet the deadline”.

The committee work was expected to be completed on Wednesday ahead of the main reports to be submitted to the plenary in session on Monday.
The deliberations on the reports of the 20 standing committees of the conference are expected to commence on Monday, May 5.

NIGERIA: Committee Agrees on Religious Equity Commission

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 23 Second
In view of the crisis associated with the secularism of the Nigerian state, the National Conference Committee on Religion has unanimously adopted the establishment of a Religious Equity Commission to oversee religious activities in the country.

In a rare show of solidarity, the committee sitting at the NICON Luxury Hotel venue of the committee sessions of the National Conference debated religious privileges and also took  a common  stand that government must hands off sponsorship of religious pilgrimages.

According to Professor Layi Erinosho, a committee member and delegate sponsored by the Academy of Social Sciences, a Religious Equity Commission as an organisation will help protect the rights of people so they can practice their religion.

His said:  “We are trying to evolve a Nigerian model of religious co-existence in this meeting. We are now proposing a Religious Equity Commission. Yes there is a consensus. Committee members have agreed on that, and I think that’s a way out for the country.
“This organisation will help us to protect the rights of people so that they can practice their religion; so that they cannot be denied opportunity to establish a place of worship and so on.

“We are mindful of the fact that there is a Human Rights Commission and somebody might raise the issue that there is already a human rights commission.

“But we think that religion is so important that there is need for dedication of an organisation to this cause, so that the organisation will be in a position to take on the huge mandate of enforcing the rights of people-like taking people to court and ensuring that somebody whose rights have been violated can seek proper redress.

“We feel that the commission will be able to do advocacy work because in our society, there are many people who are not aware of their rights.

“And where there is awareness they cannot afford to enforce it because they lack the resources. So if you have this commission like the INEC or Human Rights Commission with powers and the force of law, it will be able to take on any organisation or any state that appears to be violating the rights of people wherever they live in this country.”

In his contribution, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede said: “Equity presupposes the possibility of inequity. The question is when does inequity arise? Inequity will arise when anybody does anything that contradicts or is inconsistent with the principles of equity.

“What is the effect against somebody who suffers mishap on account of that particular act? The natural thing to do is that the Religious Equity Commission would have powers to sanction. It is the power of the commission that actually gives it effect and purpose.”
