Top GOP leaders slam U.S lawmaker’s use of racial slur

Read Time:2 Minute, 54 Second

WASHINGTON — Top Republicans denounced a veteran House GOP member's use of a racial slur to describe migrant farm workers, saying such language is not helpful as the party tries to improve its standing with Hispanics.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn all decried Rep. Don Young, who used the term "wetbacks" in a radio interview earlier this week. The Alaska congressman, in office since 1973, said late Thursday he "meant no disrespect" and explained the term was commonly used when he was growing up on a farm in central California.

Congressman Young's remarks were offensive and beneath the dignity of the office he holds," Boehner, R-Ohio, said in a statement. "I don't care why he said it — there's no excuse and it warrants an immediate apology."

Young's timing could not be worse. A bipartisan group of senators and House members plan to unveil bills in April that would dramatically revamp the nation's immigration laws and include a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in the United States.

Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee is spending $10 million starting this year on outreach efforts to minorities, women and gay voters as the party seeks to become more inclusive and welcoming. The new outreach is the result of the GOP's scathing post-election "autopsy" report, which noted that much work needs to be done to attract Hispanics. In the last election, President Obama won 71% of the Hispanic vote.

Priebus, the national GOP chairman, said Young's words "emphatically do not represent the beliefs of the Republican Party."

"As I have continued to say, everyone in this country deserves to be treated with dignity and respect," he said. "Our party represents freedom and opportunity for every American and a beacon of hope to those seeking liberty throughout the world."

Cornyn, R-Texas, noted that migrant workers come to America looking for ways to improve their lives and those of their families.

"They do not come to this country to hear ethnic slurs and derogatory language from elected officials," Cornyn said. "The comments used by Rep. Young do nothing to elevate our party, political discourse or the millions who come here looking for economic opportunity."

Members of Congress drafting immigration legislation are also considering the number of work visas that are granted to immigrants in several areas of the economy, including high-tech workers, agricultural workers and lower-skilled fields. Many of those visas would end up going to people from Mexico, Central and South America.

Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, D-Texas, chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said an immigration overhaul will only be possible through bipartisanship. He noted that Young, who has served beside many Hispanics in his decades in Congress, "should know terms like 'wetback' have never been acceptable."

"Now, more than ever, we must resolve the many issues of our broken immigration system," Hinojosa said. "But as we move forward, it's important that our Republican colleagues are mindful of how words have consequences. When elected officials use racial slurs, it sets back our nation and sets back legislators who are seriously working toward real, bipartisan solutions."

North Korea puts rockets on standby for US strike

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 23 Second

Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un on Friday ordered missile units to prepare to strike US mainland and military bases, vowing to “settle accounts” after US stealth bombers flew over South Korea.
The order came after US defence secretary Chuck Hagel, with tensions soaring on the Korean peninsula, said Washington would not be cowed by Pyongyang’s bellicose threats and stood ready to respond to “any eventuality”.
Kim directed his rocket units on standby at an overnight emergency meeting with top army commanders, hours after nuclear-capable US B-2 stealth bombers were deployed in ongoing US joint military drills with South Korea.
In the event of any “reckless” US provocation, North Korean forces should “mercilessly strike the US mainland…military bases in the Pacific, including Hawaii and Guam, and those in South Korea”, he was quoted as saying by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
While North Korea has no proven ability to conduct such strikes, Kim said: “The time has come to settle accounts with the US imperialists.”
The youthful leader argued that the stealth bomber flights went beyond a simple demonstration of force and amounted to a US “ultimatum that they will ignite a nuclear war at any cost”.
Both China and Russia asked for all sides to cooperate to prevent the situation worsening on Friday.
China, North Korea’s sole major ally and biggest trading partner, appealed for calm and said “joint efforts” were needed from all parties to prevent the situation deteriorating further.
Russia urged all sides involved in the standoff to refrain from muscle-flexing, with foreign minister Sergei Lavrov warning that the flare-up could spiral.
“We can simply see the situation getting out of control, it would spiral down into a vicious circle,” he told reporters at a news conference.
“We believe it is necessary for all not to build up military muscle and not to use the current situation as an excuse to solve certain geopolitical tasks in the region through military means,” he said, calling on all sides to create conditions for the resumption of talks.
A South Korean military official quoted by Yonhap news agency said a “sharp increase” in personnel and vehicle movement had been detected at the North’s mid- and long-range missile sites.
The defence ministry declined to confirm the report, saying only that all strategic sites in the North were under intense South Korean and US surveillance.
The B-2 flights, which followed training runs by B-52 bombers, were part of annual drills between the US and South Korea, which North Korea each year denounces as rehearsals for war.
Pyongyang has been particularly vocal this time, angered by United Nations sanctions imposed after its long-range rocket launch in December and the third nuclear test it carried out last month.
Kim’s order formalized steps already taken by the Korean People’s Army, which put its strategic rocket units at combat-ready status on Tuesday. The following day it cut the last remaining military hotline with South Korea.
Tens of thousands of North Korean soldiers and civilians held a huge rally and march in Pyongyang on Friday, in support of a possible military strike against the US.
The bulk of the threats emanating from Pyongyang have been dismissed as bluster. North Korea has no confirmed missile capability to reach the US mainland—or indeed Guam or Hawaii in the Pacific.
But Washington has opted to match the threats with its own muscle-flexing.
“We will be prepared—we have to be prepared—to deal with any eventuality,” Hagel told reporters at the Pentagon.
US military intelligence has noted that the North’s warlike rhetoric has not, so far, been matched by any overtly provocative troop buildup.

Analysts warned against reading too much into what is the latest in a long series of incremental rhetorical upgrades

Google and Ogooglebar: Who owns the meaning of words?

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 15 Second

How do you say “something that cannot be found on the web using a search engine” in Swedish?

Until this week, you could have said ogooglebar, a term sanctioned by no less than the Language Council of Sweden, and roughly equivalent to the English speaker’s mouthful “ungooglable.”

Unfortunately for search-challenged Scandinavians, Google didn’t like the idea of its name being part of a general term for online search, and suggested amending the definition to describe only searches performed via Google. The Language Council – which is dedicated to documenting the emergence of new words in Swedish – didn’t think much of this, or fancy a lengthy legal process. So the word was removed from the official list of new Swedish terms.

Whether absence from this list will make much difference to Swedish speaking habits remains to be seen, although it seems unlikely. As the Council put it in an online statement on 26th March – at least so far as I can tell, courtesy of none other than Google’s translation service – “Google has namely forgot one thing: language development do not care about brand protection. No individual can decide about the language.” The grammar may be iffy, but the point is clear. Courtesy of the internet, the furore around ogooglebar is likely only to spread its usage.

There are larger concerns at stake here, however. I’ve spent much of the last year writing a book about language and technology, and the rise of “ungooglable” and its international equivalents marks one of the most characteristic linguistic evolutions of our age: binary vocabulary.

Unfollow, unfriend

To take just a handful of terms, consider what it means to “like” and to “unlike”, or to “favourite” and to “unfavourite”; how you can “follow” and “unfollow”, or “friend” and “unfriend”, other people; and how you constantly “click” or “unclick” onscreen boxes.

In each case, what’s on offer is a near-miraculous promise of agency: the possibility of words and actions that are, unlike those taking place in the real world, entirely reversible. There’s nothing that cannot be undone in an instant, then done again at will (the word “undone” itself has existed in English for around 700 years but, when Shakespeare and his predecessors used it, they usually implied death or destruction: a far cry from pressing “Ctrl-Z” on a keyboard).

Even “ungoogleable” has a reassuring kind of certainty to it. On the one hand lies the ordered, searchable realm within which we conduct our daily digital business. On the other, there’s the stuff we’re best off not worrying about: a messy, unsearachable space spanning everything from cyber-dissidents to criminals, via paywalls and anonymous networks.

Except, of course, the boxes of online experience are never quite as tidy as they seem. “Untag” yourself from an embarrassing public image – or indeed from an image that doesn’t actually show you at all – and both the deed and the undeed will remain recorded forever. Unfollow or unfriend someone you know and they will vanish from view – but they may well never forget or forgive. No matter how many times you click undo, the machine records and remembers.

Reversible words promise a kind of perpetual present, in which everything can always be exactly the way you want it (provided you only feel one of two ways). Yet data itself only accumulates. Whether you consider yourself to be ogooglebar or not, the digital book of your life is steadily being written within somebody’s servers – and few of its words will ever be unwritten.

Mandela making ‘steady progress’ in S Africa hospital

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 16 Second

Nelson Mandela is making "steady progress" after spending a second day in hospital for treatment of a lung infection, the office of South African President Jacob Zuma says.

The 94-year-old is "in good spirits" and enjoyed a full breakfast, it said.

After Mr Mandela was admitted to hospital late on Wednesday, President Zuma said people "must not panic".

The former president first contracted tuberculosis in the 1980s while detained on windswept Robben Island.

His lungs are said to have been damaged while working in a prison quarry. This latest spell in hospital is his fourth in just over two years.

Mr Mandela served as South Africa's first black president from 1994 to 1999 and is regarded by many as the father of the nation for leading the struggle against apartheid.

'Thoughts and prayers'

The statement issued by President Zuma's office on Friday said: "Former President Nelson Mandela is in good spirits and enjoyed a full breakfast this morning. The doctors report that he is making steady progress."

Mr Mandela remains under treatment in hospital.

Last December he was treated for a lung infection and gallstones – his longest period in hospital since leaving prison in 1990. In February, he was treated for a stomach condition.

On Thursday, US President Barack Obama said he was "deeply concerned with Nelson Mandela's health", adding that "we will be keeping him in our thoughts and prayers".

Earlier, when asked whether people should prepare for the inevitable, Mr Zuma said: "In Zulu, when someone passes away who is very old, people say he or she has gone home. I think those are some of the things we should be thinking about."

But he stressed that Mr Mandela had been able to handle the situation "very well" so far.

"Very few outstanding personalities in the world live to his level," he said.

Mr Mandela retired from public life in 2004 and has been rarely seen in public since.

Despite his long imprisonment, Mr Mandela forgave his former enemies and as president urged South Africans of all races to work together and seek reconciliation.

In 1993 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

His main home is in Qunu, a small rural village in Eastern Cape province, where he says he spent the happiest days of his childhood.

However, doctors said in December he should remain at his home in the Johannesburg neighbourhood of Houghton to be close to medical facilities.

Are you in South Africa? What is your reaction to President Zuma's comments? Send us your comments using the form below.

Transgender man known for his pregnancy not allowed to divorce?

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 34 Second

An Arizona judge on Friday refused to grant a divorce for a transgender Arizona man who gave birth to three children after beginning to change his sex from female.

Maricopa County Family Court Judge Douglas Gerlach ruled that Arizona's ban on same-sex marriages prevents Thomas Beatie's nine-year union from being recognized as valid.

Thomas Beatie was born a woman and underwent a double-mastectomy but retained female reproductive organs and gave birth to three children.

Gerlach said he had no jurisdiction to approve a divorce because there's insufficient evidence that Beatie was a man when he married Nancy Beatie in Hawaii.

Beatie is eager to end his marriage, but the couple's divorce plans stalled last summer when Gerlach said he was unable to find legal authority defining a man as someone who can give birth.

"The decision here is not based on the conclusion that this case involves a same-sex marriage merely because one of the parties is a transsexual male, but instead, the decision is compelled by the fact that the parties failed to prove that (Thomas Beatie) was a transsexual male when they were issued their marriage license," he wrote in Friday's ruling.

Gerlach's ruling also said it didn't address whether Arizona law allows a person who was born female to marry another female after undergoing a sex change operation.

The National Center for Lesbian Rights, which isn't involved in the Beatie divorce case, has said courts have declared marriages involving a transgender person invalid in a handful of cases across the country, but that those cases had different factual and legal issues than those in the Beatie case.

Thomas Beatie, known as "The Pregnant Man," was born Tracy Lehuanani Lagondino in Oahu, Hawaii. He began testosterone treatments in 1997 and underwent double mastectomy and chest reconstruction surgery in 2002. He changed his Hawaii driver's license to say he was a man and had a Hawaiian court approve his name change to Thomas.

Gerlach's ruling noted that Thomas Beatie halted the testosterone treatments and that he didn't provide documentation for any additional non-surgical efforts.

Thomas Beatie married his partner Nancy in early 2003 in Honolulu and became pregnant because Nancy was unable to have children. Thomas Beatie conceived with donated sperm and gave birth to children who are now 4, 3 and 2 years old. The couple eventually moved to Arizona.

Beatie has garnered a range of media attention, making the rounds on talk shows such as Larry King and Oprah Winfrey and winning a spot on Barbara Walters' list of "10 Most Fascinating People" in 2008, alongside President Barack Obama, conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh and swimmer Michael Phelps. He also published a book, Labor Of Love: The Story of One Man's Extraordinary Pregnancy, the cover displaying an image of a shirtless Thomas sporting facial hair and holding a hand over his bare pregnant belly.

NIGERIA: Don’t defect to opposition parties, PDP youths beg govs

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 26 Second

NATIONAL co-ordinator of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Youth Vanguard, Ambassador Ibrahim Bala Aboki, yesterday pleaded with governors elected on the platform of the party, especially those rumoured with plans to dump the PDP, to jettison the idea.

In a statement signed yesterday in Abuja, Aboki said there was no need contemplating such moves by the governors, against the backdrop that PDP was the only national party in the country. He added that all the opposition political parties planning to form the All Progressive Congress, APC, had ethnic agenda that lacked no clear objective.

He noted that the only binding force behind  opposition political parties was that of individual ambition for power at all cost, adding that this was not what Nigeria needed at this moment, Aboki said:  “There is no need dissipating energy on crisis or planning to decamp to any party, because the PDP is the only national party in the country. All the opposition political parties planning to form the All Progressive Congress (APC) have ethnic agenda that lacks no clear objective.

“The only binding force behind them is the individual ambition for power at all and this is not what Nigeria needs at this moment.”

Ambassador Bala Aboki also called on governors elected on the platform of the PDP to support the ongoing reconciliation embarked upon by the National Working Committee (NWC) and Board of Trustees (BoT), as it was the necessary tool for the success of the party in the forthcoming 2015 general elections.

Commending the reconciliation moves by the Bamanga Tukur-led NWC and Tony Anenih-led BoT of the party, he said:  “We seek the understanding of the PDP Governors in the ongoing reconciliation in the party. United we stand and divided we fail and that we see the reconciliation as the basic tool that will help the PDP maintain its leadership position in the country.”

According to Aboki, the reconciliatory meetings embarked on so far by the NWC and BoT of the party is preparatory to the expected general election, where the party will present a common ground against opposition political parties.

“We advise the PDP Governors Forum led by Governor Godswill Akpabio to support the reconciliatory meetings of all the organs of the party so as to achieve the designed goal. ‘’We are all aware of the proposed merger of the opposition parties under the aegis of the APC. We should understand that most of these opposition political parties have ethnic, regional and sectional agenda.

“If you take critical look at the parties involved in the merger talks; the CPC, ACN, ANPP and the APGA, they have different agenda in terms of ideological differences and philosophical values. They are blinded by blind agenda for individual ambition and there is no national agenda in their approach for national unity and sustainability for Nigeria as nation.”

Terrorism in Nigeria: Atiku calls for continued prayers

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 8 Second

FORMER Vice President Atiku Abubakar has  called for continued prayers for an end to the problem of  complex insecurity crises and terrorism confronting the country.

Atiku Abubakar has again called for increased effort to combat the spate of terrorist attacks in the country.

The former Vice president in a statement Friday also condoled with the people of Ganye in Adamawa State that  recently came under brutal attacks by unidentified gunmen in the area.

According to the statement, the former Vice President  who is the
Sardauna of Ganye, made the call in a message delivered by a delegation he sent to the community.

Represented by two prominent leaders of Adamawa State, Mr. Maxwell Gidado (SAN) and Siddiki Jauro, the former Vice President personally conveyed his profound sympathy to the Chief of Ganye, Alhaji Umaru Adamu Sanda over the tragic loss of lives and property that accompanied the terrorist attacks.

In his letter of condolence to the people of Ganye, Atiku said he was deeply traumatized by the deadly attack on the people of Ganye by terror gangs.

According to him, the destruction of the lives of innocent people on whatever scale, was indefensible and despicable, just as he  urged the people of Ganye and other Nigerians at large to be more vigilant in the face of these grim challenges of insecurity.

Ex-Army officer, wife murdered by daughter in Delta

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 39 Second

There was apprehension, yesterday, in Oleh, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, following the killing of a retired soldier and his wife by their 32-year-old lunatic daughter.

Sources said the retired Army Warrant Officer, Mr Jonah Elili, and his wife gave up the ghost after they were hit with a pestle by the daughter whose name was given as Elo.

The lifeless bodies of the retired soldier, 75 and his wife, 65, were reportedly discovered in the early hours of yesterday by a neighbour who had gone to purchase some items from the deceased couple’s shop.

A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the neighbour had, after knocking at their door for several minutes without response, peeped into the house and was shocked to find the husband and wife lying in a pool of  blood.

The source said the woman raised alarm which drew the attention of people in the neighbourhood, adding that the last they knew or heard about the family was when the retired Warrant Officer came out to drag his daughter who ran outside naked, back into the house and locked her up.

According to the eye witness, the couple was blessed with seven children (two boys and five girls), including the one that was afflicted with insanity who had been roaming about the community.

Meanwhile, the said Elo had been detained at the Oleh Police Station. She was alleged to have told detectives that she reportedly killed her parents because they hated her.

“My parents hate me. They locked me up in a room where they first hit me before I retaliated with a pestle. I saw blood and that is all I know,” Elo reportedly said.

A senior Police officer in Oleh confirmed the story, saying a signal had been sent to the appropriate authority just as the matter was being transferred to the state police headquarters in Asaba for further investigations.

Warri dazzles Africa as AYAC 2013 begins

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 5 Second

The  stadium was full, the ambiance superb and Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan walked with his shoulders soaring above his height.

Thousands of fans, many of them school children cheered ceaselessly as he stepped into the Warri township stadium for the opening ceremony of Africa Youth Athletics Championship otherwise known as AYAC Warri, 2013.

He went round the stadium and the students cheered him on with so much passion that he occasionally reached out  for a ‘high five’ with some of them  who were cheering and thrusting their hands. Each time he did so, they went wild in celebration.

The students were there to watch young athletes from the continent take to the tracks in a youth event that could make them world beaters. And when the opening ceremony started, 34 African countries were in the stadium. The crowd was unprecedented in track and field in Nigeria. Not even football attracts such crowd.

The facilities were first class and the brief show entertaining. A cultural show had gone on after Africa’s Queen of the tracks Mary Onyali Omagbemi sang the National Anthem. A historic relay followed. 86-year-old Awoturo Eleaya started and the baton went to Tony Urhobo, Victor Omagbemi, Ogho Egwero and the daughter of Onyali, Tia  Alero who together with Elaeya handed the baton to Uduaghan.

It was a symbol of some transition from the past generation of great athletes of Delta origin to the present and the future as represented by Tia who is already running in the United States. They handed over to Uduaghan to keep up his good work in sports development. Uduaghan said he was keeping the baton not only as a souvenir but a reminder of the race he must continue to run for sports in Nigeria.

’’It’s only in the World Championships and Olympics that I have seen such an atmosphere and facilities,’’ Duro Ikhazuaegbe, Sports Editor of Thisday said, adding ‘’Delta has raised the bar tremendously.’’ Dare Esan, a known Track and Field reporter showered encomiums on the facilities and said ‘’this is good, this is beautiful for Africa.’’

’’We can’t believe this is a youth competition. The facilities, the atmosphere and the organisation. This is good for our sport,’’ Haman Said from Djibouti said. He is an official. Their coach Para Navello repeatedly said ‘’great, great, great,’’ blowing a kiss to fully express himself.

Head of Confederation Africa Athletics Marketing Department Aminata Gueye shook her head several times and said ‘’this is amazing, it’s crazy. We don’t get this in senior championships.’’

Moses Bantsi from Botswana who represented President of CAA Ahmed Kalkaba appeared emotional in his speech:  ‘’Africa is at home in DeltaState. The championships will create an venue for kids in Africa to compete with their mates at the world level.

We thank the Governor of the state as well as the people of Warri for creating the atmosphere to stage a competition of this magnitude. We are at home here and it’s been a great feeling. Nigeria is our country, DeltaState is our state and Warri is our city.’’

Sports minister Bolaji Abdullahi commended the state for the facility they put up and said that the competition would afford young talents in Africa to show their skills and develop from there. Dr. Uduaghan welcomed all to Warri, wished them a wonderful stay and declared the championship open amidst cheers. Before then, popular artist Inyanya had thrilled the crowd.

NIGERIA: Obasanjo pledges support for Anioma cause

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

The desire of Anioma people  to produce the next governor of Delta State has received a boost in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Receiving a delegation of Anioma traditional rulers and elders, led by the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Chike Edozien, weekend, who visited him under the auspices of Anioma Congress, Obasanjo, said he was supporting Anioma people to produce the next governor because of his belief in equity and fairness.

He said: “I will be a subtle advocate for the Anioma cause because it is based on justice, fairness and equity.”

He advised the delegates to work hard and build alliances with their ethnic neighbours in order to achieve their objective.

Obasanjo enjoined Anioma people to harmonise their various candidates and present a marketable personality with proven track record of performance, so as to receive acceptance from others.

Earlier, Prof. Edozien thanked Chief Obasanjo for the warm reception accorded the entourage.

He told Obasanjo that the traditional rulers and elders of Delta North Senatorial District inaugurated the Anioma Congress as an umbrella organisation of all Anioma people with the objectives of bringing Anioma people together, actualising the creation of Anioma State and  producing the next governor of Delta State, if no state was created in Nigeria before the 2015 general elections.

On the entourage were the Obi of Owa, Obi of Issele-uku, Obi of Onicha Ugbo, Obi of Atuma and the Ogene of Ibedeni.
