TB JOSHUA PREDICTED MY SUPER EAGLES GOAL – LAZIO’S OGENYI ONAZI

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 6 Second

Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has dedicated his debut goal for Nigeria’s Super Eagles to God and Prophet T.B. Joshua, the man whose club for less privileged young footballers in Nigeria, ‘My People FC’, paved the way for Onazi’s rise to prominence.

Onazi, who currently plays for Italian giants, SS Lazio, scored an injury time goal for Nigeria against their South American opponents Venezuela in an international friendly on Wednesday night, after a tap in from Ideye Brown and a wonder strike from Nosa Igiebor had given the Eagles a two goal advantage. “My goal was made in heaven because my father Prophet T.B. Joshua told me I will score.

He even gave me some tips on how to have a good game,” Onazi told MTNFootball.com after the match. “I therefore dedicate the goal to God Almighty and also to my daddy Prophet T.B. Joshua, who inspired me to score the goal. This goal will boost my confidence in other games as I believe more goals are coming, by God’s grace.”

The match, which ended 3-1 in the Africans favour, gave the Nigerian youngster a chance to prove his worth in lieu of the upcoming African Cup Of Nations Championship in South Africa. Many believe the teen’s impressive debut performance will have ensured him a place in Stephen Keshi’s squad. “I’m happy at the manner the coach has been giving me opportunities and I can assure Nigerians that I will be part of the team that will bring the Nations Cup to the country next year,” Onazi boldly declared.

The 19 year olds rise from a poverty-stricken home in the war-torn city of Jos, Plateau State to a regular in Lazio’s first team this season is nothing short of remarkable. After a promising performance at the U-17 World Cup in 2009, Onazi and his colleague Sani Emmanuel trialled at clubs around the world including European Champions Chelsea, before settling with SS Lazio.

Rising through the ranks of the youth team, Onazi has burst into the first team this season, appearing for the Italians seven times already including four Europa League matches. His gutsy performances have already generated positive responses from players and critic’s alike and even premature comparison with Nigerian legend Sunny Oliseh

Pastor T.B. Joshua is well known for his philanthropic activities, Forbes estimating he has spent up to $20m on humanitarian gestures in the last three years alone. My People FC, in the words of Joshua, is a club he set up to help the less privileged youth of the nation.

“I strongly believe the young shall grow,” he said in an interview with Nigerian newspaper Complete Sport in 2009. ”They may not be there today, but the future of this country belongs to them. That is why those of us in the position to uplift them need to use every proper means to help them reach their future goals… God wants to raise these footballers to help the widows and become a benefactor to those who need their help in future.”

It is also not the first time Joshua has been cited as a positive influence to sporting success. In June this year, Nigerian boxer King Davidson said Joshua had predicted his WBO International light middleweight victory against Ghanaian Joseph Lamptey. There was also widespread media coverage of Joshua’s apparent involvement with the Ghanaian U-20 World Cup victory against Brazil in 2009, Coach Sellas Tetteh revealing that Joshua had given him prophetic insight during the course of the final match.

they lured the man back to their flat

**shared the video via Blackberry Messenger.

A pair of cruel sisters have been jailed after they subjected a man described as a “vulnerable adult” to a degrading sexual assault and sent photos of the abuse to friends on a BlackBerry Messenger.

Twisted Yasmine, 19, and Whitney Notice, 20, lured the man back to their flat after meeting him over social media.

After plying the 22-year-old victim with cider, they threatened him with a fake handgun, forced him to strip and demanded he perform sex acts.

Police were alerted to an image the day after and specialists from the Public Protection Unit were able to track the images to Yasmine’s phone.

Birmingham Crown Court heard how the pair sexually humiliated him purely for their own wicked amusement.

Yasmine was sentenced to seven years and two months behind bars, while Whitney was jailed for five years and four months.

Detective Constable Emma Fennon said: “They targeted the man with the express intention of humiliating him for their own pleasure. They even recorded the abuse and boasted about their actions to friends.

“In the video the man, who is a vulnerable adult, can be seen cowering, fearing for his life, whilst the girls are heard laughing in the background.

“We believe this may not have been the first time they have carried out such abuse as other images discovered on their phones suggest there could be more victims.

“If anyone has suffered such abuse they should report it to police. The matter will be dealt with sensitively by officers specially trained to support victims.”

Both sisters admitted assault, false imprisonment, and causing a person to engage in sexual activity on February 3 this year.

Whitney also pleaded guilty to possessing an imitation firearm. The sisters were ordered to register as sex offenders for life.

Nigeria: Student, 27, Wins Aircraft in MTN Promo

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 39 Second

Until Tuesday , she was just an ordinary student. Not anymore because luck has smiled on Ms. Ebube Essien-Garricks, a 27-year-old student of College of Health Science and Technology, Rivers State, to alter her status in life. Her passport to fame was her ownership of an MTN SIM card, which enabled her to participate in a promo run by the telecoms company.

Tuesday, Essien-Garricks emerged the winner of a Cessna 182T aircraft, the star prize, in the much-talked-about MTN Ultimate Wonder promo. She emerged the winner at an elaborate and transparent draw held at the Golden Plaza, Ikoyi, Lagos head office of MTN.

She was writing an exam in her school in Port Harcourt while her name showed up in Lagos as the winner of the plane. Unknown to her as she was busy in the examination hall, MTN officials were battling to get in touch with her to break the good news. It was initially difficult reaching her as in line with examination rules, her handset was switched off. After many futile attempts, MTN officials devised another way to reach her, in a bid to prove that the process was transparent and not rigged.

They got through to her using the connection of family and friends found in her database and Facebook account.

Essien-Garricks, who was notified of her good fortune via a phone call, immediately opted for the cash value of the plane, which is N64 million. On hearing the news, she broke out in joyous shouts that surprised those around her. On hearing the source of her ecstasy, they joined her in celebrating.

“I am short of words, there is no word to describe what I feel right now; it is almost as if it is a dream but I know that nothing can be more real than what I am feeling right now. This must be the best Christmas gift ever. It is truly wonderful,” she said.

The MTN promotional draw was attended by journalists and officials of the Nigerian Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Addressing journalists, the Chief Marketing Officer, MTN, Mr. Larry Annetts, stated that the journey so far in getting the ultimate winner for the aeroplane, as promised by MTN, had been interesting, credible and transparent.

“When we came out with the promo, many doubted us, but today we have an ultimate winner who will go home with the promised Cessna 182T aeroplane. The take-home for us here is that MTN is committed towards enriching the lives of its consumers. When we say we will do something, you can be sure that we won’t renege on our promises. The can-do spirit is forever guiding our path in offering utmost satisfaction to our consumers and we are glad that today a Nigerian has been enriched and empowered with an aeroplane,” he stated.

Speaking on the process in selecting winners for the promo, the Assistant Director, Lagos zone of the NLRC, Mr. Obi Iriegbu, stated that it had been transparent and credible. “We started this journey together, ensuring that the consumers’ interests are protected and that the brand fulfils its promises. So far so good, it has been a credible and transparent process leading to the emergence of the ultimate winner of the aeroplane promised from the beginning of the promo,” he stated.

The MTN Ultimate Wonder promo started in August with promises of fantastic and fabulous cash prizes and an ultimate winner of an aeroplane.

MTN has so far given 1,200 people the sum of N150, 000 each, while 12 winners got N2 million each during regional cash prize presentations in Lagos, Ibadan, Onitsha, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

The presentation of the N64 million cash value of the aeroplane to the ultimate winner, however, will come up at a later date.

Last year, in commemoration of MTN’s 10 years anniversary in Nigeria, the company gave out N1 billion rewards, where 90 lucky winners went home with cash prizes of N10 million each among other mouth-watering prizes. In another campaign, early this year through the MTN Automania game, a subscription-based initiative, the company gave out 100 xi35 SUVs in a 100-day nationwide promo.

To win the ultimate prize of a Cessna 182T aircraft, subscribers were encouraged to recharge up to N3,000 within the 90 days period of the promo.

Nigeria: We Need More Than Manifestos

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 16 Second

Anyone who listened attentively to former President Olusegun Obasanjo would think that the challenge Nigerian politicians faced was the absence of party manifestos to guide their relations with the electorate.

“In Nigeria, manifestoes are prepared, read and thereafter thrown away after elections. Worse still, in other instances, some political parties do not even have manifestos. How then do we hold political parties accountable?,” Obasanjo asked at a conference the National Assembly organised on “Party Politics and Election in Nigeria,” at the National Institute of Legislative Studies. “We rarely find political parties delivering services to the people to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate.”

At the root of Nigeria’s political and social problems is poverty and low access to economic opportunities. The improvement in the well-being of Nigerians is the ultimate objective of the PDP’s economic policy, to make accessible to every Nigerian the basic needs of life. The focus would be to create a market-based economy driven by small and medium scale businesses and regulated by a reformed public sector.

At the very foundation of the above objective of the party is the pursuit of a strong, virile and diversified economy built to stem rural – urban migration through investment in modern agricultural methods. PDP’s economic policy is centred on people and seeks to realize the Millennium Development Goals while aiming to:

i. Develop a middle class driven by small business owners, professional class with access to credit.

ii. Create easy access to transferable property rights in urban and rural areas.

iii. Protect the weak and poor through initiatives that is designed to integrate them in the economy.

iv. Improve investment in physical and social infrastructure.

The PDP aims, altogether, at establishing the leading economy in Africa and one of the 20 leading and largest economies in the World by 2020; an economy that experiences rapid and sustained growth of not less than 10% per annum.

Obasanjo expressed concerns that in reality, most of the current political parties in the country are fledging and hardly able to stand on their feet, while many others exist mainly on paper, and were floated to attract the financial subventions, which the 1999 constitution hitherto guaranteed them.

According to him, even the big parties, which control various executive and legislative arms of government, are often mired by internal convulsions, lack of cohesion, indiscipline and glaring absence of internal democracy. These problems, Senate President, David Mark said have been the bane of party politics in Nigeria.

He described as unfortunate the term that lobbying has come to acquire a pejorative connotation, despite its many inherent and positive benefits, noting that this is due largely to the abuse to which it is often liable.

Nigeria: Orji Kalu As Unsung Hero

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 39 Second

Orji Uzor Kalu, also known as OUK is the former governor of Abia State from 1999 to 2007. Before his exit, he worked to see his political platform – the Peoples Progressive Alliance (PPA) emerge victorious in Abia and Imo State.

Although the PPA later suffered monumental political setbacks in the South East orchestrated by the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP], the fact that the party that was registered barely one year could achieve such a political milestone of winning two states in the 2007 governorship elections, is a testimony of the political sagacity, acumen and the energetic approach to politics that was brought to bear by the founder (Orji kalu) and his team.

For some inexplicable reasons, OUK who vied to represent his people in the Senate during the 2011 election was manipulated and rigged out by the political machinery of the ruling People’s Democratic Party which was bent on producing all elective positions to score cheap political victory in Abia State.

Unperturbed by this profanity that was carefully couched as hire wire conspiracy, this gentle-man, OUK, has proceeded with his legitimate chain of business activities which he left to contest the governorship position which he won by a landslide in the 1999 election.

But unlike other political aspirants who would either lose at the polls or rigged out and completely go into their cocoon or disappear to do their private business without working to promote peace, democracy and growth of the nation’s economy, Orji Kalu is not one who will turn his back on his country especially during trying moment.

Since losing out to the rigging machine of the ruling party at the center and made to face a Kangaroo anti-graft trial, Orji Kalu has remained a consistent patriot who is unhappy that his country has slide into anarchy, lawlessness, and terror-related violence.

Realizing that the only way for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing, Orji Kalu has severally proffered workable intellectual and pragmatic panaceas to the challenges of insecurity, poverty and corruption which confront Nigeria.

His latest intervention is his acceptance to mediate in the on-going terror-related killings in the North on the delegation of the federal government to dialogue with the dreaded armed Islamic terrorists – Boko Haram. A self acclaimed commander of the dreaded insurgents had two weeks ago listed some terms of possible truce with the government of Nigeria which included the appointment of former Head of State General Muhammadu Buhari as the head of the team from the Islamic rebels to engage in peace talk with the Nigerian government.

In what is seen by many analysts as a wise decision, General Buhari has turned down the offer in the proposed dialogue. He (Buhari) stated that he does not know any member of the group and that he completely dissociates himself from the murderous terrorism of the group which has claimed several thousands of innocent lives in the last few years.

But in a surprise move, the former Abia State governor who grew up in Maiduguri, Borno State, the hot bed of the on-going religious insurgency has offered to be part of the federal government delegation to dialogue with the insurgents should the Nigerian government accept to enter into dialogue. Most Nigerians are opposed to the peace talk proposal.

The Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka for instance believes that there are no bases legally or morally, for the Nigerian government to dialogue with these same persons responsible for the killings of thousands of innocent Nigerians. Soyinka said negotiating with mass murderers would not end the cycle of violence tearing the country apart. He also suspects that some crooked politicians had a role in Boko Haram’s early rise. Soyinka called the prospect of the government engaging in peace talks with the armed Islamic rebels “abysmal appeasement.”

But the former Abia State governor said his decision to offer his services to bring about lasting peace was because the majority of Nigerians who have lost their lives and livelihood are from the South Eastern part of Nigeria.

There is the need for peace to return to the volatile Northern region. I believe that the federal government has failed to carry out the primary constitutional duty of protecting lives and property by abysmally failing to put to an end to the growing armed violent insurgency in Northern Nigeria.

I believe that any peace regime institutionalized without first and foremost delivering justice to the thousands of persons whose bread winners have been killed by the terrorists will not be sustainable and is inherently unfair, unjust and unconstitutional.

But I do also view the offer of mediation by the former governor of Abia State as historic, salutary and heroic. The federal government is hereby advised to weigh this option comprehensively in the best interest of Nigeria. Government must put an end to all forms of support for terrorism.

In his beautiful book, There Was A Country, Professor Chinua Achebe stated rightly that the federal government is guilty of tolerating terrorism. His words: “Nigeria’s federal government has always tolerated terrorism. For over half a century, the federal government has turned a blind eye to waves of ferocious and savage massacres of its citizens – mainly Christian Southerners; mostly Igbos or indigenes of the Middle Belt; and others-with impunity”. The federal government must demonstrate strong political will to deliver social justice to the thousands of people that have lost their bread winners in the on-going terror-related violence in the North. Any peace without justice to the victims is peace of the graveyard.

Nigeria: NCAA Orders Airlines to Install Safety Device in Aircraft

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 17 Second

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has given domestic airlines a six-month deadline to install safe monitoring device in their aircraft, known as Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS) or face sanctions.

The directive came as the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation yesterday summoned the management of four foreign airline operating in Nigeria.

The aviation firms were summoned following allegations that they were barred from landing at the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.

The airlines summoned include, Turkish Airline, Ethiopia Airline, Emirates Airline and Asky Airline.

The Director-General of NCAA, Dr. Harold Demuren, disclosed this yesterday in Lagos, in an interview with journalists shortly after the presentation of his paper at the ongoing Airbus industry workshop for indigenous airline operators in Lagos.

Demuren said he was encouraged by the enthusiasm of the airlines about the device, saying that all the airlines were willing to install the equipment in their aircraft.

He disclosed that it cost NCAA about $30,000 (about N4.8 million) to acquire and install the equipment at its headquarters in Lagos to monitor the movement and operations of each passenger aircraft in the nation’s airspace.

The Director General admitted that installing the equipment would cost the airlines more, about $60,000 (over N9 million) initial payment but suggested that they could defray the cost of installation by paying at installment to the manufacturers of the equipment.

“I think we are giving them six months to install the gadgets in their airplanes. We need to give them some time. It is not a thing you can do in one day. After that, no aeroplane would operate in the public category carrying passengers for hire and reward will be allowed again in the country. I think it is good to promote safety in the industry.”

He also remarked that the cost of installing the device in the aircraft “is a fraction of the money they will use to buy an airplane. It’s nothing. The system entirely for NCAA cost us about $30,000. For the airlines, we are talking of initial payment of $60,000 and then a yearly payment till they finish paying.”

On the workshop, Demuren commended the aircraft manufacturer for conducting the training for Nigerian airline operators, saying this would further boost safety in the nation’s aviation industry.

Also speaking on the issue, the International Safety Programme Director, Airbus, Mr. Marc Ballion, said the AFIRS would automatically be fixed on all its aircraft from 2015.

He said with this installation, speculations arising from probable causes of aircraft accident would be over, stressing that before the airline could come out with the latest technology; it cost it two years of intensive research.

He said before the latest discovery, the airline was improving in its safety record, maintaining that it would further boost safety in the sector.

Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, issued the summon at a meeting with officials of the Federal Ministry of Aviation.

Onyejeocha explained that the invitation became necessary because of the controversy surrounding the alleged discrimination against the airlines.

She said since there were conflicting claims from both parties in the dispute there was need for the airlines to present their position on the issue.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation, Ms Anne Ene-Ita, had at the session debunked the allegations of discrimination and insisted that none of the airlines have been restricted from operating from Kano.

She said there were usually procedures to be followed before airlines could land at airports.

According to her, apart from signing the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the airline’s country of origin the airlines, there were some other procedures which airline ought to follow.

She also said that some airlines withdrew voluntarily from Kano Airport on the grounds that the route was not economically viable.

But Hon. Aliyu Madaki, a lawmaker who brought the allegations before the House equally insisted that the allegations were true.

Madaki also tendered correspondences purportedly between the airlines and the Ministry of Aviation to substantiate his claims.

Ene-Itah however questioned the authenticity of some of the documents.

The House had last week ordered a probe into allegations following a motion sponsored by Hon. Aliyu Madaki, representing Dala Federal Constituency of Kano State.

In the lead debate, Madaki alleged that in spite of the preparedness of the aforementioned airlines to extend their commercial operations to Kano, the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah had vehemently refused to grant them permission to land at the Mallam Aminu International Airport, Kano.

Madaki noted that apart from being the first airport built in Nigeria, the Kano Airport has been an important commercial hub in sub-Saharan Africa with a lot of air travellers.

He said that barring these airlines from landing at Kano does not encourage international businessmen and women who desire to invest in the northern part of the country to invest in the Nigerian economy.

He described the policy of the Federal Ministry of Aviation which bars certain airlines from landing at certain airports as discriminatory, adding that there was an urgent need to review it.

Zimbabwe: Clubs to Observe Minute of Silence for Richard

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 9 Second

ZIFA have directed all Premiership and lower Division clubs to observe a minute of silence before their matches between today and Sunday in honour of Dynamos board of directors chairman Richard Chiminya, who died in the capital on Monday.

Chiminya, who was 79 at the time of his death, is expected to be buried at Warren Hills in Harare tomorrow. As messages of condolence continued to pour in yesterday Zifa president, Cuthbert Dube, joined the Dynamos family in mourning the death of Chiminya, describing the passing on of the Glamour Boys’ founding father as blow to the domestic game.

Dube said Chiminya was a larger than life character who had contributed immensely into turning Dynamos into the big brand that it is today. “The Zimbabwe Football Association is at a loss of words to describe the untimely passing on of Dynamos Football Club chairman for the board of directors Mr Richard Chiminya.

“God parades and takes back His best flowers. When God plucks from our own midst the flowers that have been part of the garden, mortals grieve endlessly.

“It is no easy to accept that the larger than life character Mr Richard Chiminya is no more. We implore the Chiminya family, Dynamos FC and the entire family of football to draw solace from the fact than the late Chiminya’s legacy shall forever spur us to scale greater heights.

“Mr Chiminya will always occupy a special seat in our Hall of Fame as he was one of our administrators who tirelessly fought to keep he Dynamos brand visible.

“We urge Dynamos to continue from where VaChiminya left off.

“The Zimbabwe Football Association urges all leagues affiliated to the association to observe, in memory and honour of the late Dynamos legend, a minute of silence before the commencement of all league games for the Week ending 17 November 2012. May the good Lord let Mr Chiminya’s soul rest in eternal peace,” said Dube.

The Premier Soccer League also weighed in with their message of condolence for the veteran administrator, who had until his death been steering the Dynamos ship at board level.

Dynamos’ surviving founding fathers are the club’s top policy making body that is also responsible for appointing the executive that runs the Harare giants on daily basis.

PSL chief executive, Kenny Ndebele, said the top flight body’s board of governors – which comprises the leaders of all the 16 clubs – had been saddened by Chiminya’s death.

Ndebele said they had learnt with a heavy heart the news of Chiminya’s death, coming as it did just hours after Dynamos had powered their way into their second Mbada Diamonds Cup final appearance following a comprehensive 3-0 defeat of rivals CAPS United at Barbourfields.

“The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Board of Governors executive committee, the secretariat and all the clubs learnt with heavy hearts the passing away of the Dynamos Football Club Chairman of the Board of Trustees and founder member, Mr Richard Chiminya.

“We express our grief and sorrow at the passing away of one of Zimbabwe’s Football Icons. Dynamos Football Club and the whole football family have lost a man who was a custodian of football tradition and culture.

“A man who was a fountain of wisdom, many football clubs have survived because of the vision and wisdom of legends and icons such as Mr Richard Chiminya.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the Chiminya family. Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts.

“We urge the Dynamos Football Club family to remain united and work together to achieve Mr Richard Chiminya’s vision of building a club that will one day conquer not only the African Continent but the whole world. May his Dear Soul Rest in Peace,” Ndebele said.

Apart from observing a minute of silence, Dynamos are expected to wear black armbands when they take on Buffaloes at Rufaro in their penultimate 2012 Premiership assignment this afternoon.

DeMbare will then wind off their league campaign with an away assignment against Hardbody at Ascot on Sunday with victories in both tricky games guaranteeing them of the championship irrespective of the results from other matches.

Should Dynamos win the championship Chiminya will sadly not be there to celebrate with them yet another triumphant moment by the team that was basically his heart and soul.

Chiminya will, however, be also remembered for the tenacious way he teamed up with the likes of Bernard Marriot Lusengo, Freddie Mukwesha the late Morrison Sifelani and Robson Rundaba to fight to regain control of Dynamos after it had been taken over by the Zifa audit committee.

He also fronted the founder fathers’ High Court battle and thwarted a bid by general members to also wrestle control of Dynamos arguing that only those who played for the club between 1963-1968 were eligible for places on the board of directors and could thus vote at the Harare giants’ annual meetings.
