Kadhafi son ‘attacked’ in Libya detention: ICC lawyer

Seif al-Islam, son of slain Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi, has been attacked in detention in Libya, a lawyer from the International Criminal Court said Thursday, accusing authorities of denying him basic rights.

ICC defence official Xavier-Jean Keita said local officials have failed to get Seif needed dental treatment, denied him visits with family and friends and kept him in isolation for 139 days except for contact with authorities and prosecutors.

“Mr. Kadhafi has been physically attacked,” Keita told AFP, without giving details on the attack or saying when it took place.

“He also suffers pain due to the absence of dental treatment. The Libyan authorities have failed to take any steps to remedy this pain,” he added.

The ICC wants to bring Seif to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity for his role in battling the uprising against his father last year, but Libya’s new government wants to try him at home.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Seif, 39, on June 27. He was arrested on November 19 in southern Libya and is being held in Zintan, 180 kilometres (110 miles) south of Tripoli.

Keita, who is from the ICC’s Office of Public Counsel for the Defence (OPCD) and is acting as Seif’s primary counsel, said he has only been allowed one brief visit with his client.

“The right to effective representation cannot be secured in a setting in which the OPCD has no ability to conduct privileged communications with Mr. Kadhafi on an ongoing basis, or to transmit privileged documents to him,” he said.

He added that local officials had interrogated Seif with no lawyer present and lied about their investigation against him, saying he was being probed for failure to obtain a camel licence and irregularities related to fish farms, rather than more serious crimes such as rape and murder.

The statements come a day after ICC judges issued a ruling demanding Libya immediately hand over Seif.

It was the second time judges asked Tripoli to hand him over, after last month rejecting an initial Libyan request for a postponement.

Keita said Libyan authorities have never given a legal justification for their failure to hand over Seif.

“He has been kept in a legal black hole,” he said.

Rights group Amnesty International backed the ICC’s request Thursday.

“An unfair trial before a Libyan court where the accused could face the death penalty is no way to guarantee justice and accountability,” Marek Marczynski, head of Amnesty’s international justice team, said in a statement.

Also Thursday, the global police agency Interpol issued alerts seeking the arrest of two senior officials in Moamer Kadhafi’s ousted regime on suspicion of torture and kidnapping.

A statement from the France-based body said Libya had requested assistance in detaining two officials identified as former interior minister Al-Senussi Alozyre, 63, and his former deputy Naser al-Mabruk, 60, accused of offences including illegal arrests and torture.

Several other Libyan officials are subject to Interpol “Red Notice” arrest requests, including the dictator’s surviving sons and his former intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi, who is being held in Mauritania.

Russian Orthodox Church Apologizes for Photoshop Stunt

Based on the reflection in the table, it is clear a watch on Patriarch Kirill‘s wrist was photoshoppedout of the image.

The Russian Orthodox Church issued an official apology for digitally removing a luxury watch from an image of Patriarch Kirill.

He was pictured in a meeting with Russian Justice Minister Alexander Konovalov.

The original photo, dated July 3, 2009, showed Kirill, 65, wearing the expensive watch, according to the BBC. In the edited version, which appeared this month, the Patriarch is seen without the watch.

The deception might have gone unnoticed if not for one slight oversight: the reflection of the watch in the polished, shiny tabletop.

The attempt didn’t fool bloggers, who latched on, prompting the church to issue an official apology.

The original image of Patriarch Kirill, released in July 2009, showing a watch that was later photoshopped out of the image.

“There will be a thorough investigation to determine why in this instance there was a crude violation of our internal ethical code,” the patriarch’s press team said in a statement. “The guilty ones will be punished severely.”

The watch was a gold Breguet, with an estimated value of more than $30,000, the BBC reported.

The patriarch’s press service responded, saying, “The person simply showed stupid initiative, not justified by anything and not agreed with superiors. It is clear that it is a mistake. We do not want to hide anything, we have nothing to be ashamed of,” according to the Moscow News.

The Moscow News also said that Vsevolod Chaplin, the church’s head spokesman, told the Russian blog Slon.ru, “I do not care what watch he has; moreover, I do not remember what watch I have on my wrist, I would have to look. I am not interested in this side of life.”

India, China, Nigeria, Indonesia, U.S. to lead city growth: U.N.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – India, China, Nigeria, Indonesia and the United States are set to lead the world’s growth in urban populations during the next four decades, sparking challenges in providing jobs, housing, energy and infrastructure, the United Nations said on Thursday.

Ahead of a U.N. sustainability summit in Rio in June, the world body released new forecasts for urban populations in a bid to urge global leaders to come up with concrete plans at the conference in Brazil to produce sustainable cities.

Nigeria’s cities are expected to add 200 million people by 2050, more than doubling the country’s current population; India’s cities are to add 497 million, increasing the current total population by more than 40 percent; and Indonesia’s cities are set to add 92 million people, about a 38 percent increase in its total population, according to the U.N.’s 2011 Revision of the World Urbanization Prospects.

U.S. cities are forecast to add 103 million people, raising the country’s total population by a third, while China is due to boost its total population by a quarter, with an increase of 341 million in its cities.

Currently half the world’s 7 billion people live in cities, the United Nations said.

“Cities are where the pressures of migration, globalization, economic development, social inequality, environmental pollution and climate change are most directly felt,” the United Nations said in a statement.

“Yet, at the same time, they are they engines of the world economy and centers of innovation where many solutions to global problems are being piloted,” the world body said.

Representatives from around the world will gather in Rio de Janeiro in June to try to hammer out sustainable development goals at the Rio+20 conference, named after a ground-breaking meeting in the Brazilian city 20 years ago.

Snake fright for Australian pilot

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

An Australian pilot was given the fright of his life when a snake slithered from the dashboard of the plane he was flying, forcing him to make an emergency landing, according to airline officials.

Braden Blennerhassett was on a freight run for Air Frontier from Darwin to the remote town of Peppimenarti in the Northern Territory on Tuesday when the reptile appeared in the cockpit.

He made a mayday call and landed safely back in Darwin.

“My blood pressure and heart rate was a bit elevated — it was an interesting experience,” Blennerhassett told Nine News.

“As the plane was landing the snake was crawling down my leg, which was frightening.”

Air Frontier director Geoffrey Hunt said Blennerhassett handled the situation well, given Australia is home to some of the most venomous snakes in the world.

“He said, we’ve got a snake on board,” Hunt told reporters, adding that the pilot had trouble communicating with the control tower.

“The snake popped its head out near the transmit button that he needed to press to talk to the tower.”

Blennerhassett managed to get his small plane back to base where a snake handler was organised to meet him.

“We have got another chap here who is an aircraft engineer and a snake handler and he had a look and he couldn’t find it,” Hunt said, adding that they now planned to use a live mouse in a cage as bait.

Until the snake is found, the aircraft will be grounded
