World Cup-bound Green Eagles were May 20th given a presidential send off party at the Villa with a wish from the president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
It was the president’s first official engagement with the country’s national football team and the coach, Lars Lagerback and Dr Jonathan did not spare any moment in ensuring he made the best out of the occasion.
After all the drinks and chattering, the President settled for business. In his ever joyous mien and countenance, President Jonathan told the party that the 2010 World Cup was a very serious engagement for the country. He urged the team and the technical officials to do well at the Mundial because a good outing in South Africa would not only boost the country’s image internationally but will also justify the huge investment government had put into the project.
“I wish you well. I wish you goodluck in South Africa. Be good ambassadors of our great country Nigeria and show the world that we are truly the giants of Africa,” President Goodluck Jonathan said.
The number one citizen said the South Africa 2010 World Cup, the first to be held on the African continent was not just like any in the past. “I want us to make a good impression because this is the first World Cup on the African continent. We must prove our relevance and tell the world that we are no longer the dark continent in world football.”

A Kaduna-based civil society organisation, the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, has enumerated 90 reasons why it thinks President Goodluck Jonathan must not run in the 2011 generals elections.
The group, in a statement signed by its president, Shehu Sanni, asked Mr Jonathan to respect and maintain the zoning system of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) because his political career has benefited from zoning.
“Jonathan emerged as acting president and president as a product of zoning,†stated the group. The organisation also stated that key political offices in the country, such as the senate president, speaker of the House of Representative, secretary to the government of the Federation and vice president are not occupied “by merit but by zoning.â€
It also noted that professional bodies in the nation, such as the Nigerian Bar Association, Trade Union Congress, Nigerian Medical Association, Academic Staff Union of Universities, amongst many others, “share positions†and “observe zoning.â€
Zoning for fair play
When asked if one of reasons on the list, which states that a “Northerner will not accept a Southern Nigerian cancelling zoning†is not inciting, Mr Sanni declared: “The biggest incitement is the cancellation of the zoning arrangement. If a northern president cancels the zoning system, will the people of the south agree?,†adding that his clamour for the respect of zoning, which is a party affair, does not make him partisan.
“Zoning is a party arrangement, but the president the party is producing is going to be the president of Nigeria, and nota president of PDP,†he said, “Those speaking out against zoning today lost their voices when Obasanjo muzzled out Odili in favour of Umaru.â€
On the constitutionality of the zoning system, the activist questioned why the new occupant of the office of the vice-president was zoned, and not picked at random or merit.
“The constitution did not approve of zoning the vice-presidency, but why are we zoning the vice presidency and agree to unconstitutionally zone the office?,†he said. “There is nothing like merit in our electoral politics, because corrupt people can also contest and win elections. All the ex-governors and even serving senators undergoing trial in the courts for corruption have contested and won elections.â€
The group had warned that without zoning, only the Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo can produce a president because of their numerical strength. Also included in the list to the president are series of warnings on why the zoning structure might sustain the unity of the country.
“Zoning came as a result of the quest for ‘power shift,’ zoning is the answer to sectional domination, zoning ends ethnic hegemony, zoning enables all sections to produce a president, zoning ends the tyranny of the majority,†stated the group.
The group urged Mr Jonathan to conduct “a free, fair and credible election and hand over power to a Nigerian of northern extraction whose tenure will end by 2015. And become an international statesman.â€

THE IRISH-BORN Catholic Archbishop of Benin City in Nigeria has resigned. In a statement yesterday Archbishop Richard Burke (61), who grew up in Fethard, Co Tipperary, said his resignation, which has been accepted by Pope Benedict, was because he had been unfaithful to his vow of celibacy.
Early last year Archbishop Burke, a member of St Patrick’s Missionary Society, based at Kiltegan, Co Wicklow, stepped aside as Archbishop of Benin City when he was accused of child sex abuse. He has always denied the allegation.
The woman making the allegation, Dolores Attwood (41), now lives in Canada with her husband and three children. In a detailed statement last October she accused the archbishop of having abused her in 1983 when she was 14 and a patient in hospital. She also alleged he had abused other young Nigerian girls.
In a statement announcing his resignation yesterday, and released through the Irish Catholic newspaper, Archbishop Burke said that “on January 6th, 2009, I was officially informed by the society leader of St Patrick’s Missionary Society that an allegation had been made to him by Mrs Dolores Atwood that I had sexually abused her when she was a child. I responded immediately that I have never, ever, in my life – in any way – sexually abused a child. This is still my position. It is the truth. I agreed to follow the society procedures for dealing with an accusation of child abuse against a member.
“I returned to Nigeria to put in place the necessary mechanisms for the smooth running of the archdiocese without a resident bishop. I then withdrew from ministry and followed the laid-down guidelines.â€
He said he had recently been officially informed by the society leader of St Patrick’s Missionary Society that “following their investigations in Nigeria, no corroborating evidence was found to support the allegations of child sexual abuse made against meâ€.
He said yesterday that he and Mrs Atwood “had a caring relationship that began in the latter part of 1989, when she was 21 and I was 40. I was posted back to Ireland in March 1990 and returned to Nigeria in April 1996. In the last 20 years, Mrs Atwood and I met on seven occasions. On three of those occasions our relationship was again expressed sexually. This was entirely inappropriate behaviour and it is something for which I am truly sorry.â€
He was “deeply ashamed of my behaviour. I have caused great pain, hurt and bewilderment to those around me.†He apologised sincerely “for the pain and hurt I have caused Mrs Dolores Atwood and her family†and also apologised “to my family, to my relatives, to my friends and to my fellow members of St Patrick’s Missionary Societyâ€.
He asked for the forgiveness of the people, religious and clergy of the Diocese of Warri and the Archdiocese of Benin City. Archbishop Burke was ordained a priest in 1975.
He became Bishop of Warri, Nigeria, in March 1997 and was installed as Archbishop of Benin City in March 2008.

World Cup: NIGERIA named six players with World Cup experience yesterday in their final 23-man squad for the tournament in South Africa.
Nwankwo Kanu will captain the side at his third World Cup.
Coach Lars Lagerback, who made his choice after just two games in charge, also included Rabiu Afolabi, Vincent Enyeama, Austin Ejide, John Utaka and Joseph Yobo from the squad that took part in the 2002 finals.
The Swede cut Everton’s Victor Anichebe and winger Ike Uche, who was Nigeria’s top performer in the qualifiers, from his preliminary squad.
Both had recently returned from long-term injury and although they played in the warm-up games, officials said Lagerback had decided against taking any chances on their fitness.
Eto’o joins up with Cameroon
SAMUEL ETO’O has joined up with his Cameroon team-mates in Portugal after missing the first part of his squad’s preparations.
The Cameroon captain had been given a week off after his Champions League success with Inter Milan in Madrid on May 22nd, missing two internationals in Austria, where Cameroon drew with Georgia and Slovakia.
Eto’o has spent his free time embroiled in a war of words with former international Roger Milla and threatened to pull out of the World Cup after Milla said he felt the striker had not done enough in his career for the Cameroon side.
Santa Cruz in Paraguay squad
ENGLAND-based duo Roque Santa Cruz and Paulo Da Silva have been included in Paraguay’s 23-man World Cup squad. Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino announced yesterday that Manchester City striker Santa Cruz and Sunderland defender Da Silva are part of the squad after reducing the 30-man initial party to the official 23 which will travel to South Africa.
Kewell winning race to be fit
AUSTRALIA forward Harry Kewell is winning his race to be fit for their opening World Cup game against Germany on June 13th, coach Pim Verbeek said yesterday.
The Galatasaray forward did not train with the squad in their morning session yesterday but looks set to be included in Verbeeks final squad of 23 which will be announced after a warm-up game against Denmark today.
Gullit considers Australia job
FORMER Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit has said he would consider taking up the role as Australia coach when Pim Verbeek leaves the post after the World Cup finals in South Africa.
While a host of coaches have been linked to the job, including the likes of Frank Rijkaard, no one has put their hand up as yet with several positions expected to be available after the finals.
Gullit, who made 66 appearances for the Netherlands, including at the 1990 World Cup, has indicated he would be happy to speak to the Football Federation Australia about taking control of the Socceroos in the lead-up to the 2011 Asian Cup.
