The moribund (as most government-owned concerns are in Nigeria today) Nigerian Telecommunications Limited or NITEL, is the principal telecommunications company in Nigeria, and was owned by the government of Nigeria, as part of its civil service, until it was sold to Transcorp by the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) under the Obasanjo administration in 2006, after the company had been left virtually paralysed for years.
