Oxford Professor Mark Graham spells out the opportunities and challenges for African workers in the new digital world
DAKAR, Senegal, March 25, 2017/ — Professor Graham, addressing the 4th UNI Africa Conference in Dakar, Senegal (http://ForwardForANewAfrica.org), warned of the danger of ‘parasitic capitalism’ where digital companies give little back to the places where they are embedded and platform workers are left to fend for themselves.
UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings' said research into the Future World of Work followed by action was crucial, “We have to face the reality – the research that has been undertaken by Oxford University, the World Economic Forum, the OECD and others all points to a bleak future of employment which cuts across many sectors. This poses policy questions at all levels and there needs to be more urgency in the policy response.”
Professor Graham, the Oxford-based digital expert, drew on his recently launched paper “Digital Labour and Development” and the corresponding report “The Risks and Rewards of Online Gig Work At the Global Margins.”
Professor Graham said, “There is an alternative to the ‘Upwork.com ’ and ‘Mechanical Turk’ model which is unfortunately successfully pushing the platform economy in its image. Unions must work together to produce an alternative which safeguards the rights of workers. There is no time for excuses because the new structures are being put into place now.”
Professor Graham proposed concrete solutions centered around creating bargaining power for digital platform workers including:
“We could imagine organisations committed to transparency and identifying best practices doing a lot to ensure that workers are paid living wages, have appropriate social and economic protections, and aren’t saddled with an undue amount of risk. So, a Fair Work foundation instead of a Fairtrade foundation – verifying and certifying these sorts of things.
“We can also use what we know about the socially disembedded nature of this work, to push for more of it to be sourced through firms, social enterprises, non-profits, and of course cooperatives – of the non-platform – variety – that adhere to local labour laws.”
“The geographically dispersed nature of digital work platforms has made it extremely hard to regulate. There are many who thrive in that environment. But the role of labour regulation should be to help the most vulnerable. One solution may be that employment status should be established in the place that a service is actually provided. Why should an employer based in Germany or the US be able to avoid adhering to labour laws and minimum standards just because they used a digital platform to connect with a worker?”
Professor Graham advocated creating a transnational digital workers’ union: “If we lack the physical proximity that unions traditionally needed, we at least need some sort of shared occupational identity…One explicit role for a digital workers’ union could be building class consciousness amongst the varied workers, part-time, temporary, full-time, entrepreneurs etc. Highlighting the precariousness of this work. Highlighting that workers are receiving many of the risks of entrepreneurship, but few of the rewards.”
Professor Graham concluded that he was not pessimistic about the Future World of Work but that we should not shy away from the challenges. He pointed out that some African countries were taking the initiative such as Nigeria’s government which has developed a programme called ‘Microwork for Jobs creation.’ Kenya’s government is planning something similar.
Instead of imagining digital work as being undertaken in digital spaces, beyond the realm of regulation and worker-led governance, let’s remember it all happens somewhere. Digital work always has a geography. And we can use what we know about the economic geographies of digital work to envision and strive towards alternate and fairer future for working people in Africa and around the world.

Islamic fanatic Muhammadu Buhari; the Court has proven that I have no case and have not committed any crime known to the law. Two competent Court of jurisdiction had ordered my release which Muhammadu Buhari flouted.
But just when I faced a compromised Court- his puppet, there is a conspiracy to try me in secret. I have fought vigorously; consistently argued under the constitution why a secret trial is evil and criminal. Surprisingly; I was on the adjourned date of 20 March declared by the trial Judge that my trial is no longer based on common law or Nigeria constitution but based on Islamic law (Sharia law). This is the greatest evil and neither will I allow this religious terrorism; I am not a Muslim, I forbid Islam and the law of Islam will not kill an infidel they called me. The world has done little to protect those that believe in God of Elijah (Be them Christians or Jews) but God gave you unto mankind for such a perilous time like this when Christians or Jews are persecuted for their belief. By virtue of my unlawful incarceration; I consider it an act of terrorism that must not be overlooked, terrorism is conversant with Sharia law they have embraced to further terrorize me
It has been proven that I committed no crime known to the constitution of Nigeria or the acceptable law in Nigerian federation (Common law). Muhammadu Buhari has also through her imposed Judge disclosed that I am being tried on the principles of Sharia law. This is forcing a religion upon me; Islamization of my case or person is highly not acceptable by me though the world would keep quiet but God has chosen you not to only lead America and make it great but bring praise unto his Holy Name. Sharia law is a path to my execution because I am an infidel and seen as one opposing Islamization of the people of Biafra that stands as the only clean race in Africa. My trial has migrated from civil to religious issue and there is Islamic terrorism being targeted at me.
Finally; I humbly bring to your notice the need to intervene in my case which is now a case of terrorism. The bombings going on across the world is a result of the barbaric intention to impose Islam on the world. My trial that is now illegally based on Sharia principle is an execution of the purpose of terrorism. While the world is bombed to be brought under Sharia law; I am incarcerated to be brought under Sharia law. The people of Biafra have eschewed any form of violence even while I am incarcerated; I have propagated for peace hoping that common sense will prevail but the Islamic fanatics cannot reason beyond religious bigotry. USA as a Christian country; a God owned nation has a part to play anywhere systematic terrorism surfaces.

Medical institutions at the forefront of innovation already using SOPHiA in Africa include:
PharmaProcess in Casablanca, Morocco;
ImmCell in Rabat, Morocco;
The Al Azhar Oncology Center in Rabat, Morocco;
The Riad Biology Center in Rabat, Morocco;
The Oudayas, Medical Analysis Laboratory, Morocco;
The Center for Proteomic & Genomic Research (CPGR) in Cape Town, South Africa;
The Bonassama District Hospital in Douala, Cameroon.
African hospitals are adopting SOPHiA to – no matter their experience in genomic testing – get up to speed and analyze genomic data to identify disease-causing mutations in patients’ genomic profiles, and decide on the most effective care. As new users of SOPHiA, they become part of a larger network of 260 hospitals in 46 countries that share clinical insights across patient cases and patient populations, which feeds a knowledgebase of biomedical findings to accelerate diagnostics and care.
Speaking about the adoption of SOPHiA in Africa, Jurgi Camblong, Sophia Genetics’ CEO and co-founder, declared: “Since inception, our vision has been to develop innovative technological solutions that analyze patients’ genomic profiles to offer better diagnosis and care to the greatest number of patients, wherever they live. Today, I am very proud that SOPHiA is triggering a technological leapfrog movement in healthcare across Africa.”
Jurgi Camblong added: “By joining our community, African hospitals are breaking down the technological barriers that prevented African patients from benefiting from the same level of genomic testing than patients from the best medical centers worldwide. This is a story about accessibility, democratization, empowerment, and hope.”
Among other diseases, SOPHiA will be a key partner for African hospitals in oncology. Breast cancer, for instance, has been described as a “serial killer” on the continent as lack of relevant diagnostics and personalized care means that 60% of women with breast cancer in Africa die versus 20% in the US and EU. According to a 2012 global report from the International Prevention Research Institute, an earlier diagnostic of breast cancer could increase life expectancy by 30%. Globally, on the continent, the number of new cases of cancer every year should jump to 1.6 million by 2030. As oncology expertise might be based in different places across the globe, SOPHiA, ensures that the knowledge of a specialist in Paris will for instance be accessible to save patients in Nairobi.
Speaking about the benefits of using SOPHiA for African patients, Dr. Reinhard Hiller from the South African Centre for Proteomic and Genomic Research (CPGR) commented: “In creating a first-of-its-kind Genomic Medicine offering in Africa, using SOPHiA has been beneficial because its analysis are used by a global community of genomic medicine practitioners, allowing us to offer a best-in-class service.”
Prof. Hicham Mansour, Geneticist at the University Mohamed 1st Genetic Department – Al Azhar Oncology Center in Morocco, added: “Using SOPHiA allows us to analyze genomic data quickly and with great confidence, to better diagnose and follow up with our patients”.
Jurgi Camblong concluded: “After Europe, Canada, Australia, Russia, and Latin America, the adoption of SOPHiA in Africa is perhaps the strongest evidence that the democratization of Data-Driven Medicine is changing scale to help the highest number of patients, wherever they live across the globe.”

Ambassador of Ecuador, HE Leopoldo Rovayo, met on March 22 with the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Sir Peter Idabor.
The Ambassador commenced by saying, ‘I’m thrilled to be here and I equally convey warm greeting from Ecuadorian people’.
Looking at the objective of the visit about Oil spillage he said the Director was doing an extraordinary jobfor preparedness, detection, and response to oil spillage in Nigeria that his country will continue to maintain their relationship with Nigeria people owing to the fact that Nigeria was there for Ecuador 1985 when their pipeline had problem.
As Oil producing countries of OPEC, Ecuador and Nigeria both face the challenge of Oil spillage and as such there is need to brain storm, work together and find practical solution to the problem, for sure we will share the knowledge that we had developed detecting the effects of hydrocarbons pollution using satellite images; our scientist Paul Arellano from Yachay University is working on it, Ambassador said.
Responding to Ambassador’s address, Sir Peter Idabor said he also extol Ecuador for its active engagement with the peoples of Nigeria and commended him for the inauguration of Press Centre at the Embassy and the strong interest to collaborate with the government in the detection of Oil spillage in the Niger-Delta region.

Kenya – “Africa Can And Will Change The World. We Are In The Unprecedented Position To Be An Inspiration Of What Can Be Done Right” – Toyin Ojora Saraki At Africa Health Agenda International Conference, Nairobi, Kenya.
This week, in marking International Women's Day (IWD), the Founder-President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), Mrs. Toyin Saraki, joined the First Ladies of Malawi and Kenya, Mrs Mutharika and Mrs Kenyatta, respectively, as Amref's Special Guest Of Honour at the Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC) in Nairobi, Kenya. The Conference, which was opened by the First Ladies of Malawi and Kenya, was attended by multi-sector high-level delegates from over 29 African nations, and was closed by Nigeria's Toyin Saraki, Wife of the President of the Senate, and Founder-President of The Wellbeing Foundation Africa, brought together researchers, policymakers, the private sector, and practitioners and advocates from the health, civil society, and development sectors, to reflect on home-grown solutions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the continent.
As a panelist at AHAIC 2017, Mrs. Saraki was asked how Africa is accelerating the implementation of the SDGs. In her usual optimistic yet realistic self, she asserted:
"Africa has enjoyed a somewhat greater focus and interest, for quick and sustained progress on the SDGs, as progress on this continent means progress for the world. Also, Africa is riding on the robust presence of the private sector on the continent, and this has helped spur projects and improved outcomes in health, education, agriculture and social entrepreneurship. Specifically, regarding health, the continent has benefitted from country-supported interventions, especially around the supply side of healthcare and health systems."
"Through Agenda 2063, a fifty-year development action plan adopted by all members of the African Union, continent-wide priorities have already been defined. This should make the process of integrating and achieving SDGs into countries' development plans much easier. There is a high degree of convergence between the SDGs and Agenda 2063, in part due to the Common African Position (CAP), the coordinated Africa-wide negotiating position that preceded formulation of the Global Goals. "
"Absolute poverty has declined on the continent, taking Africa one step closer to the fulfillment of the SDGs. However, the gap between rich and poor countries has grown. This is disheartening; yet, it provides a vast opportunity for developing countries, as it demonstrates that the medicine, technology, and knowledge needed for development already exist. If these things can be transferred to developing nations, we can accelerate the attainment of the SDGs. Through cooperation between domestic and international agencies, greater access to the basic commodities of the developed world can be made available to the benefit of Africa and the world. The knowledge is already there; we now need to take that knowledge and turn it into tangible results on the African continent.”
Mrs Saraki, who serves as Global Goodwill Ambassador of the International Confederation Of Midwives (ICM), also spoke about women and adolescent health and education. She stated that: "We must provide education to girls and young women about sexual and reproductive health. This is clearly outlined in SDG 3. We must also ensure there is universal access to family planning information and education. Across Africa, we must make this a priority by integrating this into national strategies and programmes. Misinformation on sexual health and family planning combined with traditional attitudes towards childbirth and fertility lead to a range of complications, including during pregnancy and childbirth. Many of these could be prevented with the provision of basic education on sexual and reproductive health. In the absence of a formal education, local customs inform maternal health practices, often with fatal consequences. Even a basic understanding of hygiene, nutrition and child spacing could save hundreds of thousands of lives each year, and therefore should be made a priority in healthcare, and in the fulfillment of the SDGs as a whole."
"Secondly, we need to increase coverage of midwives in Africa; it is known that a 25% increase in the number of midwives could reduce maternal mortality by 50%. We know from the evidence from our frontline programmes at WBFA, that increasing the number of midwives has overwhelmingly positive outcomes for pregnant women. My organization has been working to educate midwives and community healthcare workers across Nigeria, teaching them to save mothers’ and children's lives, and also how to detect domestic violence and female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C)."
"We must address FGM/C urgently: Victims of FGM/C are at a hugely elevated risk of suffering a vaginal fistula, as well as being at higher risk of domestic and gender violence. Additionally, a woman who is subjected to FGM/C is more likely to be married off as a child bride. Not only is child marriage a violation of a girl's rights, but girls who give birth before the age of 15 years are five times more likely to die during childbirth than women in their 30s. "
To end the panel discussion, Mrs. Saraki spoke about her hopes for change: "My dream is that every citizen is counted at birth. My dream is that every citizen is registered at birth. My dream is that every citizen is protected from vulnerability and has access to Primary Health!"
The Wellbeing Foundation Africa's #MaternalMonday Media Campaign was formally accepted into the Africa Health Accountability Project and Africa Health Media Accountability Network, both launched at the conference, while Mrs. Saraki, who was selected by AHAICYouth, to feature in the Youth Town Hall brainstorming session, along with Edwin Macharia, Kenya CEO of prestigious Dalberg Consultants, ended the conference with a stirring closing keynote address, stating that “Africa Can And Will Change The World, We Are In The Unprecedented Position To Be An Inspiration Of What Can Be Done Right”.
Mrs Saraki also received the youth communique, the female genital mutilation call to action from Amref's Alternative Rite Of Passage Masai Girl Advocates, to support the rights of girls and women to be bold for change. She also received a special award of recognition from the organisers of the Conference, alongside Kenya's Minister For Health, Nairobi's Secretary For Health, and the Global Board Chair of Amref, in a colourful ceremony anchored by media personality, Caroline Mutoko.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Rivers State Chapter has observed with shock as the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike repeatedly boasted on national television Sunday that his faction of the PDP would surely get positive judgement at the Supreme Court exactly the same way he got Supreme Court to declare him as duly elected governor of Rivers State even after the apex court had earlier declared Rivers State as a theatre of war.
While reacting to the report of his PDP faction losing at the Appeal Court, Port Harcourt Division last Friday, Gov Wike stated that he would get favourable judgment at the Supreme Court, citing how he lost his governorship election matter at both the Tribunal and Appeal Court only to win at the Supreme Court.
The certainty and finality in his tone and language confirm our position that he bought the governorship judgement and this time around he is ready to buy a favourable judgement for his faction of the PDP at the Supreme Court.
Indeed, what has become clear is that our consistent position that he paid for the Supreme Court ruling that declared him governor is an incontrovertible truth given facts that emerged after the ruling and his utterances during his victory church service and his most recent boasts on national television.
The APC is however pleased that the Federal Government is doing the needful by cleansing the judiciary of the rot that allowed the likes of Gov. Nyesom Wike to bribe judges and weaken an all-important state institution such as the judiciary. We believe that Gov Wike targets three major institutions of state which he weakens with bribe money in order to obtain and retain political power. Those institutions are the judiciary, electoral umpire (INEC) and security agencies. For now, whereas he is unable to effectively pocket security agencies as in the past, his hold on the electoral umpire (INEC) and judiciary is still conspicuous as can be gleaned from the Inspector-General of Police Panel Report and the widely circulated audio clip in addition to his verbal incontinence about the Supreme Court.
The APC wishes to thank Gov Nyesom Wike for helping to personally unravel what happened and still happening at the Supreme Court as this is of interests to Rivers people, Nigerians and our collective history.
