A report released Friday in Abuja by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) shows that West Africa was now the new hub for cocaine trafficking from South America en route to Western and Central European markets.

The presentation of the 2013 World Drug Report also show that cannabis has maintained its position as the leading drug of choice in Africa; while 211,000 people were confirmed dead in 2011 from drug related incidents.

Mrs. Mariam Sissoko, UNODC representative in Nigeria, who presented the report further explained that prescription drug abuse and new psychoactive substances rose by 50 per cent from 166 at the end of 2009 to 251 by mid-2012, adding that this was the first time the number of NPS would exceed the total number of substances under international control which is 234.
