No fewer than 24 persons lost their lives on Monday in Edo and Oyo states following road crashes.

The Edo accident, which occurred at Okada, killed 18 persons, while six persons died on Kilometre 114, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Among the dead in Edo were two children and a truck attendant.

One of our correspondents gathered that the accident involved a Mark truck laden with gravel and a commercial Toyota bus belonging to Peace Mass Transit Company Limited. The bus was headed for Lagos.

The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Kenneth Nwaegbe, confirmed the casualty figure on the telephone.

He, however, noted that two of the survivors of the accident were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Nwaegbe said, “What happened was that the truck carrying gravel was coming from Ore to Benin when it lost one of its tyres and lost control. The Toyota bus was coming from Benin to Lagos when the two collided.”

Meanwhile, the accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway involved a 14-seater commercial Mazda bus marked OYO XE 675 LUY and a Mack truck with number plate LAGOS XX 455 GGE.

Eyewitnesses said the crash happened when the bus veered off the road and hit a stationary truck.

The six victims (four males and two females), were said to have died on the spot.

The Assistant Corps Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission, Oluyole Unit 1, Sanya Adeoye, said, “The unit in conjunction with the rescue team of the state ambulance service and team of Operation Burst were around to rescue the victims”.
