NIGERIA: Murder suspect jailed for stealing bus spare part

A 22-year-old murder suspect, Ikechukwu Nwakoro, has been jailed for two years by the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for stealing the brain box of a Toyota Coaster bus belonging to the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

The suspect, who was arraigned on two counts of stealing, is also standing trial for murder charges at the High Court.

The police said he was apprehended at Alaka Estate area of Lagos on July 18, after stealing the brain box estimated at N200,000.

The charge sheet read in part, “That you, Ikechukwu Nwakoro,m, and others at large on the 18th day of July, 2013 at about 0330hrs at Redeemed Christian Church of God, Alaka Estate, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did conspire together to commit felony, to wit; stealing.”

The police said the offence was contrary to Section 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State Nigeria, 2011.

After the charges were read to him, he pleaded guilty and said he was pushed to do it.

The Magistrate, Miss S.O Solabo, who held brief for the trial magistrate, Mrs. Demi Ajayi, convicted him of the charges.

She said, “The defendant ad is hereby sentenced to one year on each charge to make two years. The terms should run consecutively.”
