This came as the state government said it would soon inform Achebe’s people of Ogidi formally of the demise of their kinsman as Igbo tradition demands.
The first set of government officials to sign the condolence register in Awka included the deputy governor, Mr. Emeka Sibeudu, Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, Head of Service, Chief Chidi Ezeoke, as well as commissioners, special advisers and local government chairmen.
Deputy Governor, Sibeudu, said at Government House that he gave the directive for the opening of the condolence register to offer opportunities to Nigerians to pay tribute to a man regarded as one of the finest minds the world had known.
According to him, Achebe contributed greatly towards the development of the state and nation.
He also said the state governor, Mr. Peter Obi, was in constant touch with Achebe family.
He added that the state government would give details of the burial arrangements with the involvement of the people of Ogidi.
Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, in his message said: “We are all deeply saddened by this tremendous loss of a humble patriot, who though genteel, was widely acknowledged as a legend in his lifetime.
“Personally, my wife, Ofunne, and I were privileged to be considered his friend. He was a role model to us and many others across nationalities and across continents.”
