A supremacy battle between senators serving on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, played out on Wednesday at the upper chamber of the National Assembly before the lawmakers eventually confirmed Obanikoro as minister.
It was observed that notwithstanding the various points of order raised by Senators Bukola Saraki, Gbenga Ashafa, Babajide Omoware against the confirmation of Obanikoro, the Senate went ahead to conduct the screening of the former minister of state for Defence after which he was confirmed.
Trouble started when the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Gorge Akume, omitted Obanikoro’s name from the ministerial list he read to his colleagues at plenary.
There was an absolute quietude for about a minute after Akume recognized the three other nominees in his speech without calling out the name of the embattled nominee. Immediately after the silence, screening commenced for the first three nominees mentioned even though Obanikoro eventually became the last of the nominees to be screened and confirmed.
