Now more on the Nigerian latest News. A car exploded outside the Justice Ministry in the Nigerian capital on Friday as the nation was marking 50 years of independence, the authorities said.

There was reportedly twelve casualties in the explosion in Abuja, said Yeni Ajayi, a deputy national police spokesman.

Festivities marking the nation’s independence continued in the capital.

Earlier Friday, a rebel group had warned crowds to evacuate the venues of the event. It said it had planted “explosive devices” and warned attendees to stay away from vehicles.

It was not clear whether the incidents were related.

According a statement issued by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, they said that ,“There is nothing worth celebrating after 50 years of failure.

MEND, the key militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta, is an umbrella organization of several rebel groups. It has been battling the government for years over fairer distribution of the country’s oil wealth.
