Fat PeopleWASHINGTON (CAP) – A new study published in the American Journal Of Public Health showed that providing people with calorie guidelines did not lead them to make better food choices, but it did make them feel guilty about it.

"I know I shouldn't be eating this," said Karl Moorehouse, 39, of Arcadia Lakes, S.C., looking down at his McDonald's "Big Breakfast with Hotcakes," clearly labeled on the posted guidelines as containing 1,090 calories.

Twelve minutes later, after consuming his fresh-baked buttermilk biscuit, savory sausage hot off the griddle, fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy hash browns and golden brown hotcakes, he held his head and his hands and muttered "Why, why, why?" Then he walked up to the counter and ordered another one.

"I feel just terrible about this," he said, sucking on a ketchup packet while he waited.

"Unfortunately, the fact that people know how many calories they're consuming doesn't seem to affect their decision-making process," said study author Julie Dowd, a research professor of eating and guilt at Carnegie Mellon University. "Instead it's creating an entire generation wracked with guilt over every bite of fat-laden but cheap and convenient fast food.

"I say, just get rid of the calorie numbers and let these people actually enjoy their 620-calorie Premium McWrap Chicken & Bacon (Crispy), before they croak," she added.

She also noted that if people are going to ignore the calorie guidelines, they might want to consider throwing up the meals afterwards. "They'll still feel guilty, but they'll be less likely to be the subject of an obesity photographer," she noted.

"All I know is, the guilt can sometimes be overwhelming," said Moorehouse, eating his third 500-calorie McRib sandwich of the week. "Luckily I've been able to distract myself by masturbating and feeling guilty about that."
