The Delta State Government has assured that it is irrevocably committed to ensuring the effective implementation of the Subsidy Reinvestment Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) so as to guarantee a more meaningful life for the people in the state.
The Commissioner, Directorate for Local Government, Mr. Newworld Safugha made this known while fielding questions from journalists at the ongoing Mid-term Reports press briefing by members of the State Executive Council.
Stressing that the purpose of SURE-P funds was to cushion the effect of the partial removal of the oil subsidy on people, Mr. Safugha said that 10 local governments in the state had flagged off the programme in their areas.
According to the commissioner, over 400 deserving persons including those with disabilities have so far been employed by the SURE programme in various local government areas in the state, adding that some councils had also awarded scholarships to indigent students in the tertiary institutions.
The Commissioner disclosed that as part of efforts to key into Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s transformation policy, the Bomadi Local Government Area had procured several buses and two engine boats, adding that Ethiope East Local Government had also bought 30 tricycles as well as complete working tools for farmers and two 16-seater buses.
Mr. Safugha said that in furtherance of the SURE-P, the Ndokwa East Local Government Area had embarked on full scale employment scheme for welders and the physically challenged among other beneficiaries, even as he maintained that Patani Local Government Area also implemented the SURE-P funds as part of its human capital development programme.
Besides, he said the Isoko South Local Government had constructed people oriented projects at the Uzere Cassava Factory saying that it was unfortunate that the projects could not be sustained as a result of lack of funds.
In another development, the commissioner restated the determination of the State Government in resolving the crisis between the Ijaw and the Itsekiri in Warri North Local Government Area.
Mr. Safugha explained that in a bid to resolve and bring to an end, the Igbodo traditional Ruler’s crisis, the Deputy Governor, Prof. Amos Agbe Utuama (SAN) on behalf of the government had set up a committee in which he is a member, adding that the State Government had reached 100 percent resolution of the issue.
