The sleepy town of Igarra in Akoko–Edo Local Government Area of Edo State was thrown into mourning, Thursday morning, following the gruesome murder of Mrs. Onyonishoyi Ukana, (Nee Akarutu), allegedly by her husband, a retired Warrant officer, (WO 2), of the Nigerian Army, Shakede Ukana, over his insistence to marry a second wife.

Ukana, was alleged to have used a machete to kill his wife at about 1am and dismembered her body.

It was gathered, from sources close to the family, that an 18-year-old son of Shakede’s, whose name could not be ascertained as at press time, also sustained several machete cuts in an attempt to rescue his mother, during the mother’s ordeal.

As soon as the incident happened, the assailant’s son reportedly raised an alarm, which attracted neighbours to the scene.

It was further learnt that the couple had been having a running battle over her husband’s plans to formally marry his age-long mistress, which according to a source; the late wife had strongly objected to, fuelled recurring fights in the family.

A source close to the family disclosed that several attempts by family members and friends to resolve the crisis were unsuccessful.

The remains of the late Mrs. Ukana is said to have been deposited at a private mortuary in Igarra, while the accused, Mr. Shakede Ukana is said to have been arrested by police.
When contacted, Edo State Police Public Relation Officer, Mr. Moses Eguavoen, an ASP, said the Command was yet to be briefed on the incident.
